if you're heading down to pennsylvania avenue in the northwest for the capital pride festival. at least a 30% chance of thunderstorms. first half of the festival probably going to be dry. anything after 3:00, you're starting to live on borrowed time a little bit. just sort of keep that in mind. have your rain plan ready to go just in case. after we get through today with the steaminess and feels better after you've been rained on. >> new from overnight, crews have recovered a woman's body from the water on the southwest water there is front. she disappeared late last night after supposedly swimming with friends. this happened near the capital yacht club on water street southwest. news 4's derrick ward is live there for us with the latest. derrick, what do we know? >> reporter: good morning. as you can see, a very calm, even peaceful, picturesque scene here at the channel near the yacht club. that's very different from what was going on here earlier today. in the intense nighttime search was carried out in the washington channel late yesterday t started at about 10:00 p.m. by half past midnight it had turned into a recovery effort. by 2:30 in the morning, they had found the body of a woman. authorities say she was among a group of for people on board a craft anchored in the channel just off the capital yacht club. >> there was a group associated with a sailboat here. apparently, they went in swimming. i believe four went swimming, only three returned. witnesses say they believe that they actually witnessed the adult female go under the water. >> reporter: now, that search involved helicopters, boats, and canines on the shoreline. authorities say the spot where the woman was found was not far from the spot where she was believed to have gone in. the investigation still goes on, and the identity of the victim has not yet been released. we're live on the southwest waterfront. now back to you. >> all right. derrick s d.c. native antionetta mckoy told her family she was moving to north carolina to marry a man of god. >> kimberly, i think we're having a little trouble with your mike. i'll do this. d.c. native antionetta mckoy told her family she was moving to north carolina to marry a man of god, but they never saw her again. now seven members of a polygamous sect are behind bars for her murder. news 4's darcy spencer reports. >> i had no idea, but i will be burying one of my children. >> reporter: yvonne mckoy is the mother of 27-year-old antionetta mckoy, whose remains were found buried behind a home in durham, north carolina, this week. >> it's a tragedy to me that someone would be so brutal and mean and cruel. in my heart, i say they could have sent her home than to do what they did to her. >> reporter: seven people have been charged in connection with mckoy's murder, including peter moses, the alleged ring leader of a religious cult that practiced polygamy. police say they're also responsible for the murder of a 5-year-old boy, whose remains were found nearby. >> she tried to get out. she wanted to get away. these monsters chased her, beat her down, beat her unconscious, and shot her twice in the head. >> reporter: mckoy met moses while they were attending dunbar high school in northwest d.c. her mom said she hadn't seen moses in ten years. then her daughter suddenly announced she was marrying him and moving to north carolina. that was in december. she hadn't seen or heard from her since. >> she felt that, you know, him knowing the bible, that he was a christian, god-fearing type of man. and actually, he was the devil in disguise, a monster. >> reporter: police say mckoy had been living with moses and several other women near where the remains were found. the bodies were discovered by a plumber called to the house because of what was believed to be a sewage backup. >> we see something buried in a plastic bag, and it has a horrible smell. we don't assume -- we don't think it's an animal or nothing. it seems like it could possibly be another human. >> reporter: mckoy's relatives say she was a writer who loved poetry and would have done anything to help people. darcy spencer, news 4. >> mckoy's family is planning a memorial service at greater pentecostal church in northwest d.c. on june 25th. that would have been her 28th birthday. two d.c. police officers recovering this morning blo surprise attack in when this happened about 5:00 last night along sixth street northwest. police say they received complaints about a homeless man blocking the sidewalk. when the two officers arrived, the man started throwing punches and then hit the officers in the head several times with a large pipe. that man was arrested. the officers were taken to the hospital, their names and conditions have not been released. prince george's county police investigating a deadly hit and run early saturday morning. it happened at the intersection of riverdale road and 63rd place in riverdale. police say delivan beam was heading west on motorcycle when a lincoln navigator tried to make a left turn and hit beam, killing him. police are asking anyone with information to call crime solvers. commotion over camp david this weekend after a plane flew into restricted air space tlchlt the small private plane had no radio communication and was intercepted about 11 miles from the presidential retreat by two f-15 fighter jets. they escorted the plane to hagerstown where the secret service had a conversation with the pilot down on the ground. president obama and the first family are at camp david for the weekend. the secret service says it looks like the plane entered the air space by mistake. a new development in the anthony weiner twitter scandal as the congressman announced he will take a leave of absence. the new york democrat told reporters he's seeking treatment to, quote, focus on becoming a better husband and healthier person. right now he has no plans to resign. this comes as many lawmakers, including former house speaker nancy pelosi, and dnc chairman, debbie wasserman schultz, demand that he leave office. weiner has not indicated how long this leave of absence will last. it's 9:07 right now. in just a couple of hours from now, d.c. will be rocking as part of the annual capital pride festival. this celebration of the lgbt community has taken place over the last 40 years, growing with each passing year. the festival gets under way at 11:00 and goes until 6:00. parts of pennsylvania avenue as well as surrounding streets will be closed around the national mall. there will be more than 100 vendors, groups, and organizations setting up shop around the festival, as well as musical acts all day on the main stage. in the meantime, thousands of people lined the streets yesterday for the annual capital pride parade. the celebration in dupont circle has grown to become the third largest gay pride event in the country. more than 70 organizations participated in the parade, including members of the d.c. council, aarp, and the george mason university police department. 9:07 right now. a group that helps feed the less fortunate on >> at some point today. we're going to get a little mess in the middle, but on the edges it will be good. >> that's right. beautiful to start, and it will be really nice by later this evening as well. between now and then, we may m nature. we'll talk about your forecast and whatever those two are talking now#6k a hollywood power couple known for their giving ways is now offering help to an area hit by one of those deadly tornadoes. brad dest angelina jolie donating $500,000 to help the tornado-ravaged town of joplin, missouri. the tornado there killed more than 150 and destroyed more than 8,000 homes. pitt and jolie's money will be used to rebuild some of those homes. brad pitt grew up in springfield, missouri, about 75 miles from joplin. >> so interesting to see how that couple is rooted to the south. they have a place in new orleans. helping to bourbon street. >> they've given a lot of money and spent a lot of and spent a lot of there trying to help out. >> and they're bringing a lot of good attention, and they're helping to responsor the rebuilding of so many neighborhoods devastated down there, and they're helping to build hurricane safe houses. you can't really hurricane proof something, but hurricane safer, building them up above the flood plains and things like that, having people have like drive under garages and get the living floors up. that's how you help hurricane proof a little bit. >> give the wind a place to go. >> more importantly, the water. because so much of the new orleans basin is below sea level. that's always been the problem they face down there. anything you can do to get above that critical level is very, very important. so for us, meanwhile, as we talk about all that's going on in missouri and new orleans, people are wondering, what's going to go on here? an american humorist james. this hurber first coined the phrase in the new yorker magazine in 1914. it's referred to as an advantageous position such as a batter with three ball and no strikes. >> so you didn't make it up. >> i didn't make it up. >> and hasn't been used since until chuck bell brought thank you up. >> it's been lying dormant since 1942, and now we know why. some storms could be severe, damaging wind and hail are primary threats. 75 degrees at national airport. 75 manassas. 75 fairfax right now. temperatures will be close to or slightly above the 90 degree mark waive the day is through. we should be about 90 degrees by 2:00 this afternoon. thunderstorms will be a big part of the afternoon and early evening time frame. make plans accordingly. if you're heading to the pride festival, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at least a 60% chance you'll get rained on. if you're headed out on chesapeake bay to do a little sailing or boating. enjoy the sunshine but put your block on for sure, at least 30. that's what i always use. boy, are we sitting great for the rest of the week. that cold front that comes through today sparking the thunderstorms means low humidity for the next three days after this. >> wow. >> thank you, chuck. >> you're welcome. congressman anthony weiner has announced he will take a leave of absence and seek treatment. despite calls for his resignation, he says he has no plans to leave office. nbc's brian mooar has the latest on this story. >> reporter: faced with a twitter scandal that won't go away, congressman anthony weiner of new york on saturday announced he was requesting a leave of absence from his job. his office said he was seeking professional treatment to focus on becoming a better husband and a healthier person. that announcement came a short time after he told reporters he wanted to keep on working. >> i've made some serious mistakes here, and i have to redeem myself. and i'm going to try to get back to work. these were personal failings, so i'm trying to not let them get in the way of my professional work. >> reporter: reporters caught up with the embattled congressman as he was picking up his laundry, but his dirty laundry had become so much of a distraction, top democrats were calling on him to step down. more voices joined the chorus of critics. among them, former house speaker nancy pelosi, congressman steve israel, head of the democratic campaign committee, and his successor, congressman chris van holland. >> another top democrat calling for weiner's resignation this morning. the new chairwoman of the dnc. congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz told reportered she's disappointed in weiner's decision not to resign. >> the behavior is indefensible, and weiner's continued service in congress is untenable. this sordid affair has become a distraction for representative weiner, his family, his constituents, and the house. for the good of all, he should step aside and address those things that should be most important, his and his family's well-being. >> former house speaker and democrat nancy pelosi has called for an ethics investigation into weiner's actions. defenders of the new york law maker point out that, while his actions are embarrassing, he has not broken any laws. anyone looking for dirt or bombshells on sarah palin won't find them in the treasure trove of e-mails recently released. more than 24,000 pages of e-mails were handed out to reporters by the state of alaska on friday, and they basically paint a picture of a drirch, image conscious governor, closely involved with the day to day duties of running the state. they also show that palin angled for a vice presidential nomination months before john mccain picked her and that she actually once praised president obama for supporting a natural gas pipeline in alaska. the international monetary fund is scrambling this morning after an apparent cyber attack. a spokesman for the imf says the organization is fully functional and declined to detail the scope or nature of the attack or whether any sensitive information was taken. "the new york times," though, cites an unnamed imf official as saying the attack is serious and sophisticated. the attack comes just weeks after former imf chief dominique strauss-kahn was arrested on accusations of sexually assaulting a maid at a new york hotel. another top al qaeda operative is dead this morning. fazul mohammed was killed in a shootout with forces in somalia. government sources there and senior u.s. officials have confirmed his death. mohammed was on the fbi's most wanted list. he was the brains behind the bombings of the u.s. embassies in kenya and tanzania in august of 1998. the explosions there killed 224 people, including 12 americans. the casey anthony trial is set to resume again on monday, presumably with more expert testimony. yesterday a forensic entomologist told the jury he found insects in casey's car trunk that are commonly found in cases of human decomposition. this supports the theory that casey's daughter caylee was in the trunk for days before being dumped in the woods. casey's defense team continues to assert caylee drowned in her grandparents' swimming pool. firefighters are struggling to contain a massive blaze that is decimating parts of eastern arizona. as of this morning, the fire spans 672 square miles and is only 5% contained. there are now concerns about the air quality. health fishes aofficials are wa people as far east as central new mexico about soot particles that can get caught in the respiratory system and cause major problems. so far 10,000 people have been evacuated and at least 30 homes destroyed. this morning we're seeing amazing pictures, the first of congresswoman gabrielle giffords since the attempt on her life in january. take a look of the these were posted on giffords' official facebook page just about two hours ago. they were taken on may 17th at tier nan memorial hospital in houston of the that's the day before she watched her husband mark kelly pilot the space shuttle "endeavour." she could be released as early as the end of the month. >> see that signature smile there. she looks good. do you need to buy a present for a little boy or girl? [ bob ] squak. if you like hot and steamy. this day is for you. >> this whole day has been filled for people. >> send us a note. hot and steamy. do people like that? >> some people do. there are a lot -- and i mean a lot of snow haters that watch this station. i say that with great love and respect. >> there are people who are like, oh, gosh, it's so hot, and i can't breathe, and it's sweating, and i'm miserable. i love it. >> there are people who have moved here from the great state of florida who would just as soon have florida weather all year round. and people who move from upstate new york and say i shoveled snow my entire life, and now 90 degrees is good for me. for me, i like a little mix. i like snow in the winter and my hot weather in the summertime, for about three days. that's as much as i like the heat. we've had our heat for three days in a row. more than that. 102 was the record on thursday that broke the old record from 1874. we don't need to be that hot, that's for sure. today we will not be 102. we'll be well up into the upper 80s and low 90s. 79 the current temperature. dewpoint at 69 degrees. that's the real problem that we're facing is a lot of moisture in the atmosphere, and a cold front coming our way, a legitimate cold front, which is going to take the heat and humidity out of here for tomorrow, monday and tuesday. but between now and then, we will have a line of thunderstorms to deal with. temperatures in the upper 70s, pushing 80 degrees already. that little ribbon is the cold front now moving into south western pennsylvania, far northwestern maryland. as it comes on through here as early as noon in the high spots here west of hagerstown, could see a couple of thunderstorms. around 3:00, 4:00, thunderstorms are going to be quite likely. by 6:00, 7:00 this evening, thunderstorms rolling on through. starting to leave the area. you folks out towards hagerstown should be done with any rain chances by about 7:00 this evening. high pressure building on in. it's going to be a gorgeous start to the work and short school week. slight chance of severe weather. don't turn your back on mother nature. the timing of these thunderstorms here, any time after lunchtime and before 7:00 or 8:00 is your best chance for seeing the storminess. hot and humid today. thunderstorms likely. one or two at least will be severe. so, again, keep a weather eye to the sky as you get outside to enjoy all of the sunshine and the summer activities that everyone loves to do. then for tomorrow, sunshine, cooler, refreshing. lower humidity. all the words you love to hear in the month of june. if this is your week at the beach, yes, indeed, great weather. little storminess down at the coast lip today as the front clears the coast as well. it's going to be gorgeous around here all week long. last year we didn't get below 60 even one time during the summer months. ♪ [ woman ] sam begged and pleaded... so i sent him to camp. we'd earned lots of points with our new citi thankyou card... and i put them to good use. he told me about his bunkmates, and how he signs up for every activity. ♪ he even hangs out with the camp director. just like that.
