>> i don't think that these are random events. there appears to be an effort to disrupt the ability of journalists to cover today's events. >> reporter: allaire abi says its journalists were hospitalized. >> they were beaten seriverely, one almost lost his life. >> reporter: a retired american nurse living in cairo is now trapped in her apartment. >> i still have my knife, and the rest of my armory that i will use. >> reporter: lester holt described his failed attempt to reach her. >> we're going to move on. but this is the difficulty. we're a minute's walk from where she is, but we can't risk it. >> reporter: the state department has now tried to reach out to thornberry, but so far has only evacuated those who can get to cairo's airport. meantime, at this white house, the president is monitoring the situation. and this morning, at the national prayer breakfast, looked to a higher power. >> we pray that the violence in egypt will end. and that the rights ands aspirations of the egyptian people will be realized. >> reporter: now, the state department says it expects those clashes to get even more violent on friday. so far, they have evacuated about 2,000 americans from cairo, but as of now, they say they have no more flights scheduled for friday. on capitol hill, kristen dahlgren, news4. more now on the arrests of the "washington post" journalist. cairo bureau chief fadel and photographer linda davidson were among those arrested. secretary of state clinton said just moments ago that the u.s. condemns the attacks on reporters and the strongest possible terms. she said it was unacceptable, and called on the egyptian government tonight to protect reporters, diplomats and peaceful demonstrators. back here at home, prince george's county police officer is in the hospital this afternoon after hitting some black ice and crashing. take a look at the cruiser. police say the officer lost control after hitting a patch of ice, and slammed into a utility pole in clinton last night. the officer is expected to be okay. icy roads may also have caused this two-vehicle crash. one car even landed in a creek. this happened on bell view road in mclean, virginia. this morning police say a four-runner and a lexus collided, sending the lexus into the water. the driver suffered minor injuries. could be another icy morning tomorrow. >> meteorologist veronica johnson has your freezing forecast. veronica? >> yeah. yesterday and for the early morning, our problem was we had so much melting take place, because our temperatures yesterday were above freezing. all that melting just froze on a lot of the area roads. here's a look at the morning temperatures. 25 in sterling. spots like fairfax, too, down to 25 degrees this morning. 29 right in the district. but for the most part, we're well below freezing. throughout the entire area. got a lot of sunshine today, but the temperatures today, oh, they've been right around the low 30s. so again, not as much melting. you can see how we've had that sunshine. a few clouds to the north. hagerstown, frederick and baltimore. we now sit at 33 degrees currently in fairfax. 35 in the district, takoma park and driven trinidad and tinnily town. you folks in prince george's county are currently at 32. here we go, as we look at the radar, quiet. but to the south, you can see moisture moving through. areas around southern tennessee and around southern north carolina. so there is another system that is going to be brewing down south and moving up the coast. we're going to talk about that later. as for the overnight period we're going to drop to 29 degrees and by 11:00 p.m., down to 27 degrees. there will be just a few clouds around tonight. high pressure will be moving in, so expect even lower temperatures overnight. more icy roads for us. above freezing again tomorrow. that means, again, more melting. not only could it be icy roads for saturday morning, but we could be looking at, again, another event and bringing us freezing rain. more details coming up. thanks, veronica. that massive winter storm that dumped more than 2 feet of snow pushed through, but left behind bitterly cold conditions that for some buildings have been too much to bear. jay gray has that story. >> reporter: this brutal winter storm stretches for more than 2,000 miles. battering much of the nation with snow, ice and freezing temperatures, including wind chills of nearly 30 below across the midwest. while in massachusetts, snowblowers have been moved from sidewalks to rooftops. hoping to avoid scenes like this. structures collapsing you said the weight of the drifts, several buildings have already buckled across the northeast. they are dangerous, and in some places, even deadly conditions. at least three people died when their pickup slid off an icy interstate in northeast oklahoma, and plunged into the spring river below. in chicago, o'hare airport is open, but more than 1,000 flights have been can he willed. the weight and frustration growing for hundreds of stranded passengers there. >> bitter. >> okay. >> we just wanted to go home. >> reporter: there are, though, some signs of progress. this lakeshore drive on wednesday. and this is the same road today. open again after hundreds of cars were stuck tuesday night and into wednesday morning during the height of the storm. >> less than 24 hours after the storm ended, we're heading back towards normal conditions. >> reporter: nothing is normal in dallas, where the super bowl party has been put in the deep freeze, just days before the big game. and more snow is in the forecast. adding to the issues, a day of rolling power outages across the state wednesday, to ease the strain on the grid. and make sure everything goes as planned on the gridiron. jay gray, nbc news, arlington. air passengers are still having a tough time trying to get out of the d.c. area. more than 50 flights have been cancelled today at reagan national, dulles and bwy airports. across the country, there were a lot fewer flights cancelled today, about 1,500, compared to more than 6,000 yesterday. virginia transportation leaders have now scrapped plans to build high-occupancy toll lanes along a six-mile stretch of i-395 in arlington and alexandria after a contentious lawsuit filed by arlington county. transportation officials say they can no longer tolerate anymore delays. their new plan is to create nearly 30 miles of hot lanes from i-95 at garrisonville road in stafford county to edsel road of i-395 in fairfax county. v-dot will also build a new ramp from the hov lanes to seminary road to handle traffic when thousands of military employees relocate to the mark center in springfield. there's some rough going on the beltway at this hour. >> sure is. let's get the latest now, and your first word from ashley lindner in the traffic center. ash, how are we rolling? >> this afternoon is shaping up to be a pretty nasty one. we had relatively quiet afternoons, at least in the early afternoon hours, but not today. we have had big delays. this is the capital beltway, inner loop, misleadingly nice looking. if you look toward the top of your screen, you see they are coming out of delays that begin pretty much solid from the dulles toll road. outer loop headed away from us there, also slow. let's continue around the beltway as you make your approach toward river road, both sides very congested, headed away from us, continuing up towards 270 where you've got more substantial delays. almost shockingly, no action accidents, just delays. as we continue toward silver spring, you're also going to be riding the brakes there, out of virginia, along 95. no big complaints. we had an earlier accident by the prince william parkway. that's been cleared, but we have patchy delays towards quantico. pat and jim, back to you. >> thanks, aash. president obama spoke at the national prayer breakfast this morning. his remarks were followed by remarks from astronaut mark kelly, husband of congresswoman gabrielle giffords. he said giffords is improving every day, and doctors have told him that's a very good sign. kelly noted that president abraham lincoln believed in fate. and he said there was a larger plan. kelly said he told his wife recently that perhaps the deadly shootings in tucson were part of the same plan. >> that this event, horrible and tragic, was not merely random. that maybe something good can come from all this. maybe it's our responsibility, maybe it's your responsibility, to see that something does. the national prayer breakfast takes place on the first thursday of february every year. the first breakfast took place back in 1953. football owner dan snyder is suing a local paper over a column it published. >> snyder says the november article in the "washington city" paper defamed him and had anti semetic messages. it was called the cranky redskins guide to dan snyder and had an altered photo of the owner with horns and a beard likening him to the devil. it references snyder getting caught forging names as a telemarketer and cutting trees on federal land to improve his home's river view. the lawsuit charges the paper used lies, half-truths innuendo and anti semetic imagery, to smear, malign and slander snyder, and seeks $2 million plus punitive damages. >> we're getting a whole lot of comments to the lawsuit on our facebook page today. maria says, quote, snyder ought to be sued for messing up, and i'm paraphrasing here, messing up the redskins' organization. >> tracy says, quote, some have said this is his way of getting publicity during super bowl week, since his team isn't in the big game. and never will be, as long as he is owner, end quote. >> that's just my opinion, dan. please don't sue me. you can add your thoughts by going to facebookn facebooknbcwashingtondc. the police officers had no problems after maryland lost to duke last night. the bonfire which had been planned before the game went off very peacefully. there were no riots there like there were last year after the terps pulled off the upset, and there were no arrests this year. off the court they did us proud. >> they did us proud. they didn't win, but they were cool. >> we are just getting started on news4 at 4:00. a whole lot more to come. a new sesame street museum is coming to our area. also ahead, we're going to give you a sneak peek at some of the commercials in sunday's super bowl. washington area won't have to travel too far if they want to go to sesame street. elmo made an i am prompt tu appearance at a press conference in northwestern washington today. he and his sesame street pals will be featured in a brand new exhibit coming to the national children's museum at the national harbor in maryland. the new $180 million museum is set to open in 2013, and will include a factory. meanwhile, let's talk more about this weather, and the weekend. >> yeah, the next punch. >> well, and it's going to be a very small punch, because there's i think only a couple hours saturday morning where we could see icing or freezing rain around the area. let's first, though, get through the overnight, and tomorrow. let's talk about it. outside right now, we've got some high clouds with us, just a few. the temperature at 35 degrees. we've been in the low to mid 30s, running colder than average. the average, 45 degrees. and with the northwest wind at 10 miles per hour, we do have a wind chill now. the reading, 27 degrees. so let's talk about what's taking place across the area. i'll go ahead and click through these. those were some of our neighborhood station locations. but as we look to the west, folks, there's a lot of cold air that's been coming in. 2 degrees in omaha. 17 degrees in dallas. minus 4, the low temperature this morning in wichita. and there are even some locations yesterday that set records that they have held for the last 50 years. a lost cold air. look at this, well below freezing, the cold plummeting sound south, 22 in dallas, texas. 31 in memphis. you can see it there. chicago, down towards brownsville, texas. and as far as the overnight, they're back down into the teens, and low 20s once again. a lot of cold air, and we're seeing the system develop. this time, it's down around the gulf of mexico. you can see the moisture streaming to the north and east, and with it, there is some frozen precipitation already in the form of snow and even freezing around. around the areas of huntsville, alabama and down through areas of jackson, mississippi, a little bit of freezing rain and snow mix. and this system will be moving east-northeastward by the time we get to saturday morning. it will be just off the coast of north carolina. so here's a look at the future cast the next 48 hours, our area of high pressure over us. it allows the winds to continue to drop in the next 12 to 24 hours. that will be moving off the coast. you can see the moisture here by early friday morning, it makes its way up. it's just rain, i think, into south carolina. the icy stuff stays back to the west. but then as we get into late friday night, i think we'll see some freezing rain make its way into our area. i think after midnight. and for a period of a couple hours, probably going into the early morning hours on saturday, 5:00, 7:00 a.m., areas north and west of suburbs could get a little icy with a little bit of freezing rain mixing in and maybe even some snow. so here's a look at your forecast for this evening. continued breezy, 30 to 34 degrees. your morning temperature, 17 to 25. watch out for more ice tomorrow morning. 44, though, will be much of higher. the temperatures across the area, with very light wind. and again, saturday morning is the one to watch. this will not affect any of our travels, at least on sunday. >> all right. 500 gained three points to close the day at 1307. egyptian president hosni mubar mubarak tells abc news today he wants leave office now but can't, he says he's afraid the country will sink deeper in cha chaos. jim ma saida reports. >> reporter: on this day ten of the protests that have paralyzed downtown cairo, the momentum seems to have shifted, however slightly, back to the pro democracy camp. and for the first time we have seen egyptian soldiers getting involved. a tank was seen earlier today, pushing back defenders of president hosni mubarak's regime, and then put themselves between both camps, trying to assert some kind of control. this is a far cry from yesterday, when they basically looked the other way. pro and anti mubarak supporters turning tahrir square into battle zone. his son, ganal, according to egypt's state tv will not now be running for president to replace his father who has already said he won't be running for another term. but the pro democracy camp has remained adamant. they say there will be no negotiations with the government, and no end to their protest until mubarak, one of america's key allies in the middle east, steps down. >> reporter: and tonight, more ominous signs of violence with reports of heavy gunfire on and around the square. no more looting and increasing crackdown on international journalists trying to cover this story, including arrests, confiscation of gear, and beatings. i'm jim maceda, reporting from london. a northern virginia family pleads with their son to leave egypt. that story coming up right here at 5:00 tonight. ford is recalling about 280,000 f-150 pickup trucks. the problem? faulty door handles that could open during a crash. the recall is for the 2009 and 2010 model years. they were built between january 18th of 2008 and november 30th 2009. the national highway traffic safety administration says that the truck is hit from the side, a sprainiing in the interior do handle could break, causing the door to open. the recall is expected to begin february 14th. federal reserve chairman ben bernanke says the economy is recovering, and will continue to recover in 2011. >> but he says the economy is not rebounding as quickly as anyone would like, mainly due to slow hiring and uncertainty about the government's response. brian mooar reports from capitol hi hill. >> reporter: despite those miserable winter storms, last month's retail sales were hotter than expected. the service sector, 90% of america's work force grew at its fastest clip in five years. unemployment claims are down, factory orders are on the rise. and fed chief ben bernanke, says the economy is moving in the right direction. >> although to date growth has not been fast enough to bring about significant improvement in the labor market. >> reporter: employers are still hesitant to hire. uncertain about the recovery, and washington's efforts to keep it going. the fed chair agrees, congress needs to slash spending now. >> there's only so far we can kick the can do you knwn the ro >> reporter: he's also urging congress to raise the debt ceiling and stop the bickering. democrats say they get it. >> we're not burying our heads in the sand. we recognize we have to do some things. >> reporter: while washington works to get spending under control, many americans are struggling to keep their own houses and mortgages in order. >> we have 14 million homeowners under water. 4 million are under water by more than 50%. >> reporter: more signs of a recovery that can't happen quickly enough. if congress does not raise the and then that cold air made its way in. by 11:00 tonight, we're down to 27. do expect to see a few clouds around the area. 26 to 25, 5:00 and 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, there's your sunrise tomorrow at 7:12. spots dipping into the teens like frederick, maryland and winchester, too. so plenty cold all through the area. and high temperature tomorrow around 40 degrees. so lots of sunshine of the it will be a pretty day tomorrow, as high clouds start to make their way in during the afternoon. now, we are talking about that next storm system. it's down in the gulf of mexico right now. by saturday morning, it's off the coast of north carolina. the white is expecting some snow through areas of kentucky, west virginia and north of us. so if you're traveling north up into pennsylvania or new york, upstate new york this weekend. could be a little snowy there. icy conditions just to the north and west of our area. so here's how it plays out. take a look at the time line. the wet weather starts about 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. in the morning on saturday, as the colder air comes back with us. chance of freezing rain until become 6:00 or 7:00 a.m. could have a light coating of ice by the time we get to saturday morning around 7:00 a.m. and then some isolated pockets of freezing rain continue north and west until noontime with rain ending about 6:00 or 7:00 p.m. on saturday. that's the way it's looking right now. so by the time we get to sunday, we're just fine. the high, 42. friday, 39. for saturday, 45. for sunday, look for some rain showers on monday and the possibility of flurries tuesday. and, yes, folks, you are seeing right for thursday. that is snow falling. we could have a system with not only snow, but a whole lot of wind on thursday, and that means a possible -- maybe a possible nor'easter. >> wow. >> okay. >> all right. you've got our attention. >> you're sticking to this tuesday/wednesday midweek pattern. thanks, veronica. lindsay lohan may be in trouble again with the law. we told you yesterday that she has been accused of stealing a necklace. but so far, there have been no charges filed. here's nbc's kristen welker. >> reporter: lindsay lohan just got out of rehab a month ago. and by all accounts, she has been working hard to get her life back on track. so these new allegations could be a major setback. >> soon after the necklace was allegedly stolen, we see a picture that appears to be the necklace hanging around lindsay lohan's neck. and that is evidence that the police are taking very seriously? >> a written statement, the lapd said they obtained a search warrant tuesday to look for the missing necklace in lohan's apartment. but prior to service of the warrant, the necklace was returned. hollywood insiders say a lohan aide gave the necklace back. >> there are reports that lindsay is denying that she knew it was taken that a stylist took it. >> reporter: representatives from the jewelry shop tell nbc news they gave police surveillance video which shows lohan in their store the day the necklace disappeared. now it will be up to the los angeles district attorney to determine whether charges will be filed. >> the d.a. will make a decision, can they prove she was shoplifting?
