Further to the north and west with some question marks that well talk about. The temperatures are generally above freezing. Weve got 34 at henderson and lewisburg. 37 at the station in raleigh and also in durham. 36 about republican. As we move to the south were looking at generally upper 30s. 36 for clinton. About 37 at fayetteville. Of course if we get some precipitation over those areas thats coming down hard enough for a little while. It mayrive those down a couple degrees here and there. Heres the wider look. You can see clouds extending back into Western North carolina. But most of the precipitation will be over the eastern third of the state or so as low pressure passes back to our south and east. A small chance of a wintry mix. Mainly rain and perhaps some snow mixed in as well. By lunchtime were about 39. Still could have that wintry mix in the area. The chances increase as you go raleigh. And then as we head into the afternoon, a lot of it starts to costal plain. Cloudy skies for our highs. So it will be windy as well. We may have some gusts around 35 or 40 miles an hour. Ill pass it over to brian. Thankfully at this point it looks like wet roads is the biggest problem. We look at that road weather index, this matches up with what mike just showed us on the radar. It looks like were seeing a bunch of snow on the i95 corridor and off to the east. That is not necessarily verifying. Maybe a little bit of a mix at times as that precipitation falls. Exactly Brian Shrader back here as well. Well get to him in just a little bit on that. Well take a look at radar. There are plenty of echos showing up. Basically over the eastern or southeastern half or so of our viewing area right now. I95 corridor down across the southern and costal plain. Right now in the triangle area and points northwest its dry and probably from around durham up toward roxboro and out toward say, hillsborough and all, theres a chance you dont get any precipitation today. There is that chance in the raleigh area even, but we also have the chance at the western edge of that precipitation to kind of bulge back to the north and west a little bit before it starts to pull away as we head toward the mid morning and late afternoon. Right now temperatures are above freezing. 37 for cary and durham. About 39 in erwin, Roanoke Rapids has 36 degrees. 35 for goldsboro. You do want to get out for a walk or run early today, theres that chance of rain or pockets of snow, especially south and east of the triangle. Our temperatures in the 30s for the next couple of hours and as we get in the afternoon and the precipitation starts to pull away a little bit to the east. We may get a little bit warmer to the mid and maybe some upper 40s up toward rochboro. It looks like well have a gusty the we may have some gusts at 20 to 30 miles an hour. Now, a look over to brian. And were watching all that precipitation to the south and east this morning, mike. Nothing falling right now in the triangle, thankfully. Its all dry. Shouldnt run into any problems. And katherine you had a chance soldier who has been a panthers fan all his life. Reporter hi, brian and layla. Yeah, there is a big game going on here this weekend. Weve heard a little bit about it. So many great, Great Stories here and we had a chance to meet, as you mentioned, Michael David yesterday. He has been a longlong panthers fan. We first heard about him midseason back in september when he got surprise midfield during a panthers game for tickets during the super bowl. This was happening well the panthers came or not. Well they did. His dream has come true. Decades ago. To say Sergeant First Class Michael Davids is a super fan is to put it mildly. Say 30 jerseys. He grew up watching the panthers with his dad, a marine, then moved to michigan, detroit lyons territory but his alegion remained with the panthers. I was a little kid. Owner Jerry Richardson saw one of those letters, wrote him down. Just to have the owner of a team for a little kid in michigan to give it was amazing to me. The experience turned him into a diehard fan. During each of davids three deployments hes received care packages from the team. To get something from the boss, the owner who can do a million things on that day but he took the time to write a handwritten note it changed i mean it truly changed me. Mid season with the panthers undefeated the organization teemed up with the u. S. O and bank of america to surprise davids nfl soldier with tickets to the super bowl. Now, hes here with his wife an degree contract, experiencing the moment like never before. Inches away from the lombardi trophy and watching the team he loves try to bring it home. I think the moment they come out on the field im going to be in like a surreal, like, little fiveyearold moments. My wife is going to be laughing he was so cute. He really is having the time of his life out here. They have a fiveyearold son who is also a huge panthers fan. It was really interesting him watch his son view the panthers going 140, then, of course they had that loss. Siz son was so upset. But he was able to turn this into a lesson of reskill yen sy that his son could really relate to. A lot of life cess sons as well. What a great story. The power of a random act of kindness. Thank you so much, katherine. And in this south side is that right sports bar, meanwhile, known for its wings. There have been some broncos sighting. Again, as the panthers keep pounding their way to the title. Have a great sunday. And the queen city, lets get to that story we were talking about. It is buzzing, of course, with the excitement ahead of tonights super bowl with the perfusion of panthers around. Whats it like bucking the trend and being a bronco in charlotte . Well we dropped by the charlotte bar known as the broncos fan hangout. The owner of dd peckers is actually a panthers fan but welcomes all fans, including the broncos faithful. Some of the denver fans say its tough to pull for their team here and you can imagine, thats because its hard to find broncos gear with almost everything being sold in the area is for the panthers. Yeah,nd theyre certainly having nicer weather over there. Exactly. Looking for a lot of sun. Probably temperatures in the 70 to kick off the game. And falling ten degrees. Around here its a good bit cooler. Were not below freezing. We do have some precipitation going on out there. We were talking about possibly going into the region yesterday. On over the last hour on radar, you can see its color coded to indicate in blues the areas where there may be some snow reaching the ground. The greens indicating where its rain. Theres a little purple colors there that indicate a mix. And sometimes, depending on how the information is coming in and what the temperature structure of the lower atmosphere happens to be you can have some areas that look pretty blue and, in fact, a lot of that is rain with a little snow mixed in. We take you in a little bit to the northern part of this area of precipitation. You can see how its kind of covering the eastern section of nash county and Edgecombe County around rocky mount, very lightly up around infield, town toward wilson, along the i95 corridor, generally as we move toward the south, theres kind of mix between areas that may be bouncing between rain and some rain mixed with snow and on down toward fayetteville. Weve got some precipitation going on for smithfield. Fayetteville and areas south and east of fayetteville toward elizabeth town, clinton some of of heavier echo showing up and that has reflected itself in the precipitation totals. Ill show you that in just a second. Right now a look at some town by temperatures. 37 in durham and wake forest. Same thing at the station in raleigh. 39 in holly springs. For the most part in wake county, weve got little or no precipitation going on right now. And some question marks about whether any ever manages to kind of bulge its way up into our part of the viewing area. So we look down toward the south, 37 for fayetteville. 36 in goldsboro. Probably a little bit cooler up toward the virginia line with low and mid30s there. Now, we take a look at rainfall and of course from the triangle area and northward and off to the west, we havent had any at this point out of this system. Erwin has about 100th of an inch. Goldsboro 410ths offen inch. So the rainfall is building up there pretty quickly. Only 900ths of an inch in fayetteville so far. Of course its a delicate balance today in between where we may have some changeover to perhaps accumulate in 1 or 2 spots. And places where the precipitation is light enough or the temperatures remain just barrel warm enough that it mainly falls as rain and there is no accumulation. Its a good chance a lot of us end up that way. You can see on satellite and radar, the General Organization of the system here. A little bit of a counterclockwise swirl. Thats all associated with the surface low pressure area that has formed off the coast. Weve been watching the last day or two this upper trough coming from the southwest and swinging across the southeast. Right now its moving into georgia and just out ahead of that weve got the surface low pressure area formed off of eastern florida yesterday. Its been moving toward the north, northeast. It looks like it will move kind of slowly today as this upper trough intersects with it a little bit and then after that, the low will pull off to the east. Taking this band of precipitation away. The question becomes as they interact a little bit, does this precipitation band get drawn a little bit father west for a while today into some of the slightly colder air. Upper level trough a little bit later on today. Fairly far to the south as we go through tonight and tomorrow, that lifts away pretty quickly. So we think most of the precipitation will be out of here later this afternoon and evening. Well see a clearing trend tonight. Theres another trough behind that, though, that comes along late today and tomorrow morning that could kick off some shower activity. After that were mostly dry as we go through tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. But theres a lot of cold air pouring into the eastern United States and so our temperatures are going to run below normal, it looks like, for most of the week ahead. So it looks like over a good part of our viewing area, weve got this purple im showing on this map indicating we could be rain or snow or bounce back and forth. And inside the pink area is where we have the best chance of maybe a little bit of accumulation, a trace to perhaps, less than an inch. About 39 at lunchtime. 44 by 4 00 this afternoon. And then falling back to about 40 by 8 00 p. M. We may see a couple of breaks of sun as we get into the later afternoon in the triangle westward. 53 degrees. So thats going to be warm enough not to worry about snow. Those may mix with a little snow tomorrow night. On tuesday 49 with a mix of sun and clouds. Weapon, thursday, friday look mostly sunny but our temperatures really trend down. Highs that day in spite of the sun only get into about 36 degrees. Now, brian is here to catch us up on the roads. Still watching this road weather index. We did get a report from twitter from one of our viewers in Johnston County. I show you what he said. They are reporting a little bit of sleet falling right now. So as mike is saying, we could see this wintry mix in areas south and east of the triangle this morning at this point were not anticipating any big problems on the roads. I do want to let you know about something that will affect your morning commute in morrisville its going to be a big problem for a long time for the next six months, morrisville park way is going to be closed between Bristol Creek drive and crabtree crossing parkway. This is out toward park west right there is a Railroad Crossing and the dot is separating that crossing. Its going to be closed for the next six months there are going to be posted detours. Expect unusually heavy traffic tomorrow. Back to you. Brian, shrader my traffic mentor, thank you much. We have already been through one bout of ice this winter. Remember a couple weeks ago . Plenty of people slipped and fell. Ths honcheof ohats alont me m, ooubet. Renge nd est i aane thteio . Afic bweigmae. Ra rarmed t acbein a ant wa e wou h 0. Right now on wral news, new overnight a 17yearold has died after he was hit while walking in lumberton. Troopers released details on the vehicle that left the scene. Plus meteorologist mike moss is in, telling us who could see snowflakes. Youre taking a live look at those road conditions, well certainly have live drive five out as well keeping an eye around town. And were live in the bay area, california, well have a live report from levi stadium where the panthers meet the broncos. Katherine tells us how charities are benefitting from the big game. Sunday is the day weve been waiting for. I am layla santiago and we have a lot going on. Were certainly keep pounding is a motto of the day. But were also keeping an eye out and about. We have julia sims in drive five. Mike moss. We have the whole gang. Because were keeping an eye exactly its one of those dicey closecall days out there where we have a sharp western edge of the precipitation its a little uncertain about how far west it goes. We also have borderline temperatures that can tilt one way and give us ju rain or the other and give us snow and sleet. You can see how its generally more or less along the i95 corridor and points east ward and weve had some fairly substantial precipitation especially toward the southern costal plain. You can see weve got the color coding indicating that parts of this may be pockets of wet snow trying to get to the ground. Even in those areas there may be places melting before it reaches the surface in this mainly rain. So well be watching this closely over the next under the influence hours it could kind of end up pulling away slowly or it may bulge back a little father north and west. Heres a look at our current temperatures. 34 in henderson and louisburg, 38 in chapel hill. About 37 here at the station. Toward the south, 39 in erwin. 36 for clinton and about 36 for fayetteville. Theres a look at the broader area of satellite and radar. You can see this whole system developing as we went through the night time hours. 39 at lunchtime. Wintry mix at that time from the triangle area south and east about 44 later this afternoon with some strong wind gusts from the north and east. And maybe by that time well start to get some breaks in the clouds. The precipitation probably tapering off over the costal plain by then. Ill move along to brian and let him update here. Just reiterating what youre saying this morning, mike, no problems in the triangle right now. Its dry. But south and east of the triangle we see a little bit of a wintry mix although i dont think its going to cause a lot of problems on the roads. Along the i95 corridor and just to the south, thats the area were most concerned about this morning. Did have a all right from one of our viewers in Johnston County in the i guess that would be the western side of johnston roads with a little bit of sleet falling. And julia sims has been out all morning in life drive five mostly in Cumberland County. And julia where are you right now . Reporter we are on 95 northbound in Johnston County. Right around four oaks, smithfield area. And we have just started feeling or hearing, rather, a little sleet. Weep show you what it looks like on i95. Its been mostly raining all morning long. But every now and then youll hear the sleet pelt that windshield. So, you know, if youre going to get out, its wet, its cold. Its messy. But thats about as bad as it gets. At least as bad as weve seen so far this morning. So so far so good, brian. Very good, news. Julia sims in life drive five this morning. Well get another update from julia coming up in just a little while. Again, in the triangle not seeing any big problems at this point. And any chance at the moment at least of seeing wintry precipitation will be along the i95 corridor and just to the keep our eyes on it, have another update in about fin minutes. Well new overnight a teen has died after he was hit by a vehicle in lumberton. Troopers tell us 17yearold Austin Collins was hit from behind while walking along wire grass road just south of lumberton, off highway 74. This was around 7 15 last night. The question is will it kind of bulge back to the west and northwest and give us a period of precipitation Early Morning well talk about that more in just a little bit. Bragg soldier who has been a panthers fan all his life. Rorr ri and layla, good morning to you. A bit of action to tell you about. The lights came on here at levi stadium about 40 minutes ago, so the warm up in full swing for kick off. As for that soldier, well we first met Sergeant First Class davids back in december when he was midfield during a panthers game for tickets. At that point we did not know whether the panthers would be coming or not. But his story really begins three decades ago. To say Sergeant First Class Michael Davids is a super fan is to put it mildly. So i have probably, i would say 30 jerseys. He grew up watching the panthers with his dad, a marine, then moved to michigan, detroit i was a little kid, i was writing letters. Owner Jerry Richardson saw one of those laters, wrote young daved back and invited him down. Just to have the owner of a team for a little kid in michigan to get the opportunity to come and meet the franchise it was amazing to me. Reporter the experience turned him into a diehard fan. During each of davids three deployments hes received care packages from the team. To get something from the boss, the owner who can do a million things on that day but he took the time to write a handwritten note it changed i mean it truly changed me. You have quite the impressive risumi. Youve cooked for oprah, michael jackson. So now hes cooking for us. Wral and the viewers. Get to, you know, we think of these parties and we think, chicken wings, bacon, stuff thats not just that great. Deep fried. This is a healthier version. So lets go ahead and start off with what you have. First thing, North Carolina youve got to use sweet poe at a owes. So french fries very popular, but this is a nice healthy version. This is a baked sweet potato wedge. A little spicy. What i did, again, just a little extra verge inolive oil. Made with greek yogurt. I love that by the by the way. Theres a little cucumber in there. It looks delicious and smells delicious. Very easy. You just pick it up. This is something you just grab, what, 5, 6, 7, ingredients from the store. Really simple. And youre done. Okay. Well move on to the chicken. So this is everyone loves chicken wings, right . Yes. I love them, obviously. But this is a healthier, version what i did is marinate it for a couple hours, some honey, some garlic, orange juice, a little bit of ginger, i grilled it. Grilling is not a summer sport. So i whipped out the grill and then i have it served with a nice little kale. So youre telling me that we dont have to fry everything . No. Thats thats what youre saying. No, grilling is a great way to get flavor, its very healthy as well. It looks good. What a display. Sometimes mine dont end up just as nice so the last one you brought in, and one thing im noticing about all of this, so much color. Yes. So much color. And this is toast. Yeah, this is very much on trend right now and very heal as well. Ive taken some nice whole grain bred, just topped with avocado and then you could do whatever you want with it. Some low fat head arrest cheese. This one has salmon, baby radishes and cranberry as well. This one is all vegetarian. I have low fat feta cheese. These are things you wouldnt think are fingers foods. Very easy to make. They look very colorful and great way to introduce new ingreed yens. A healthierersion. You dont have to fry everything. Im going to be digging into this in just a bit. In the meantime well go ahead and send it over to brian. Thanks so much, chef. Im going to dig into some of that as well. Looks so colorful. And i agree with the chef, i dont care what time of year it is, i can fire up the grill. It can be a foot of snow on the ground. Nothing wrong with that. Yeah. Grilling up. Zmroo slut lie. Smells good and you know, good to eat as well. Keeps you warm when its cold outside. Its a cold morning. Its even better than those hot steamy days. Certainly not hot and steamy out there today. We are mostly above freezing situation weve got going here. Well take a look at the radar lapsing over the last hour for you where we have do have precipitation that has moved into a good portion of eastern North Carolina. We talked about yesterday how it was a little bit tricky figuring out where the western edge of where this would be and it might be a pretty sharp suddenen cut off asn no andeethwoayttle corridor, but the chances increasing to the southeast. Thats more or less what were seeing this morning. Theres a little bit of a bulge back into eastern wake county. You can see going on here. Recently well zoom in and take a little tour here up to the north where right along the i95 corridor a little bit to the east toward infield. Well look at some mixed precipitation indicated by radar and some of this may be actually getting to the ground as rain. But some reports of sleet mixed in as well. Some wet snowflakes down toward wilson. Some decent steady precipitation. Fairly light going on. Just kind of of the on the bonder line there. Seeing a little precipitation and heading on down toward the south. The fayetteville area has been getting some precipitation its fairly lit right over fayetteville. A little heavier over Cumberland County father well take a lk at some of the numbers weve gotten so far here in just a little bit. First we take a lk at our current town by town temperatures, 37 in durham and moncure. Same thing for cary and the station here in raleigh. So were about 37. Buckhorn at 38. Same thing in erwin, were a little cooler up toward the north. 34 for roxboro. 33 for south hill. Fayetteville is at 36. As is goldsboro. So were aew degrees above freezing thats helping out greatly with the roads. Pockets that might form could cause so far from the raleigh area north and west no precipitation noted. It could be that we get through the day without seeing precipitation in these areas or anything measurable but well still watch for several more of that bulge is a little father west before it pulls out. Only almost half an inch for goldsboro. Almost an inch in clinton. So especially the central and southern costal plain. Precipitation rates have been a little higher. You can see all of this developing during the last 24 hours on satellite and radar. The wide view, a lot of high clouds over Western North carolina, the low clouds and precipitation over the east. We had low pressure that formed yesterday off the northern coast of florida thats been moving toward the north and its set up off the southeastern with an upper level low moving in a place over george yorj this morning. That will continue down just off the coast later on today and depending on its exact tilt and how it interacts with the surface low, well control how far westward some of that precipitation gets and whether some of it interacts enough with cold air to get some snow to the ground. Now, as we go on between today and tomorrow that upper low and the surface low both lift away to the northeast pretty quickly, most of us are done with precipitation, other than one more upper level trough thats coming toward us late tomorrow and on into tuesday and late tomorrow and tomorrow night, well have a chance of some showers with that. After that, kind of a broad trough with most of the moisture to our east but cold temperatures coming into the eastern United States and were going to have a cold period as we head on through wednesday, thursday, and probably into friday. We do start to recover a little bit and warm up a little bit toward friday into early next week. Generally, mixed precipitation, a lot of it rain but maybe a pocket or two of snow and sleet. Most of the isolated pocket or streak, where we get a trace to less than an inch. 39 at noon. Still with some of that around, about 44 at lunchtime and probably drying out from the west. Weall back to about 40 by 8 00 p. M. Later tonight a low of 31. Tomorrows high about 53. And well start tomorrow with mostly sunny skies early in the day and a little chance of precipitation. But as we head through the afternoon it looks like cloud cover will pick up and by the well have a about a 50 of showers. On tuesday, mainly dry about 45. It looks like well be colder though. Wednesday, thursday, friday, lots of sun those days. But we only get into the upper 30s, maybe some mid30s on thursday. Now, brian is here for another update on the roads. Thankfully not hearing any problems on the roads, just wet conditions. Even though we are getting some reports of sleet in Johnston County. This is in fayetteville at cliff daily at the all american expressway. You can see it is mighty wet. And of course this is all south and east of the triangle this morning. Remember through the day as you head out as you run into any wet conditions you have the windshield wipers your headlights need ton on as part of the law. So along that i95 corridor along the south and east thats where were seeing problems with the rain this morning. Some of it mixed in with a little bit of sleet or snow. Mostly sleet according to the reports were getting, especially right around the four oaks area and also mcgees cross roads. Also, you want to keep this in mind for tomorrows mornings commute in cary and morrisville. Theyre going to be closing morrisville park way tomorrow morning, between Bristol Creek drive and crabtree crossing parkway. Theres a Railroad Crossing right in there and d. O. T. Is going to turn that into a bridge so its going to be separated from the road and its going to be closed for six months. And of course morrisville parkway is very busy. They have a detour set up. Those are already very busy roads and that additional traffic from morrisville parkway will make them even busier so plan on some extra delays as people get used to those detours tomorrow morning. Back to you, brian. I learned all i need to know from brian. Another look at this mornings top stories after a braeng. Become part of your family. Wantfenect ed, ed, ired. So imp thihawer. Ocalvano brtersams nuer one s fo, we anrmaton scrinlife were bsteralways here for wherever here may be. 0. Well, good morning, carolina in the country. They will end it on a losing streak. That starts tonight at 6 00 right here on wral. Plus the special post game edition of wral news. Right after the game. As the panthers keep pounding. Thats a look at sports. Exciting. Yeah, just hours away. So how are things looking. Exactly, the aerial precipitation has stayed almost well be watching it as we go through the day as it might back up in the triangle a little bit or stays where it is. So far mostly rain with a little sleet and white snow mixed in in spots. But no accumulation. Thats likely to be the case as it continues in the area in the early afternoon. Well get to 39 by noon. By 4 00 most of it getting away to our east and well climb into the low and mid40s then. Mike, thank you. And our pet of the day comes from the Franklin County humane society. Yeah, tell us about precious here. Good morning, this is precious. Shes about six and a half years old. Shes an australian cattle dog mixed with some kind of terrier. And she gets along great with other dogs, cats, children. She loves to go out in the yard and run and play. Shes a high energy dog and needs to be exercised on a regular basis. Weve got thank you bringing her
