This is the official ball for the world cup. And, props, youre not getting it back. Lets look at the stadium where everything is going to start. We have a lot of news to get to, beginning with the growing war in iraq. Mounting threats to our homeland. The government there asking for the u. S. Military to come back. They want american against al qaeda militants, marching towards baghdad right now. Terry moran is in Northern Iraq with all of the latest. Good morning, terry. Reporter iraq right now is gripped by desperation and fear. And the iraqi government, which three years ago, told u. S. Forces to get out of this country, is now asking for american help again. They want air power, bombing of the radical islamists who are now taking town after town across iraq. Like a fierce desert wind, the jihadists advance. The iraqi army is in full retreat. Simply melting away. The victorious fighters are the al qaedafounded group, the i. S. I. S. And they are fueled with ruthlessness and religious zeal. They call this the blessed invasion. The lightning speed of their conquest has shocked the government here and in washington. Theyve now taken mosul, iraqs secondlargest city. Tikrit, saddam husseins hometown. Baiji, an iraqi oil refinery town. And today, they are taking direct aim at baghdad. They are wellequipped and disciplined. And they have weapons abandoned by the iraqi army. And 500 million in cash seized from local banks. Chaos reigns here. Wounded children. Families with nowhere to go. And fear they will bomb their home. They will kill all of the people here. Reporter people here say it took just an hour for the iraqi army to desert the city of mosul, dropping their weapons, stripping off their uniforms and fleeing. American taxpayers paid 14 billion to train and equip that army. George . Terry, u. S. Officials believe this al qaeda army has become the singlegreatest terrorist threat to the United States. I was struck by the quote of one u. S. Official to the wall street journal. It says, when you look at this intelligence, it makes you want to kill yourself. Reporter it is a frightening prospect. Not just for the people in iraq and this region, but for the world and american interests. They are ruthless. They are wellfunded. Wellorganized. And they have a gigantic patch of territory across two countries to launch further attacks. Thank you, terry. The fears that iraq will become the same breeding ground for attacks against the United States, that afghanistan was before the war there. The fallout from eric cantors stunning election upset. The House Majority leader announcing he will step down from that role. Shaking up the republican leadership. And abcs jon karl has the latest for us. Reporter after an emotional closed door meeting with House Republicans wednesday, eric k d cantor made it official. Effective jewel 31st, i will be stepping down as leader. Eric cantor, a good friend of mine. And been a very good leader for our party. Reporter with cantor on, republicans will elect a new leader today. Cantor, perhaps the most conservative republican leader. But he was defeated by a College Professor and tea partier, dave brat, who accused him of being too willing to compromise. On the conservative score card, hes doing everything wrong. Hes pushing amnesty. Reporter in his farewell speech, cantor made a plea for unity. There is Common Ground if we allow ourselves to work together. Reporter brat spent barely 100,000 on his campaign. The cantor campaign spent more than that at steakhouses. The reason we won this campaign, theres just one reason. And thats because dollars do not vote. You do. Reporter cantors loss seemed to doom whatever slim chance the president had of getting Immigration Reform through congress. But the president telling supporters, quote, i fundamentally reject that. And i will tell the speaker of the house to reject that, too. Will the speaker listen . Jon karl, thanks very much. Were going to turn to details on the deadly shooting rampage in las vegas. But the good news for the United States is they are getting so much better. And even in this group of death, this is a terribly tough group theyre in. Group g ghana, portugal, another great player, Cristiano Ronaldo. And germany, with a successful world cup. Theres a possibility they can get out of this group. But it will be tough for them. When your group is called the group of death, that doesnt bode well. A lot of talk, as you know, julie, about brazil. How they are prepared for this. How they really have wanted this for so many years. Whats the word on the street from brazilians . Well, you know, its interesting because wherever you talk about brazil and football in the same sentence, they talk about it as this religion. Its in their soul. Its a spirit amongst them. It brings such happiness. And you walk around, you hear anger. You hear sadness. And thats about the 12 billion theyve been spending. And the people here, and ive never seen this before. Its being called the next evolution in Live Television. Heres a sneak peek of what you all expect. What makes raising star a gamechanger. This. The face of the voters appear on the giant wall. And maybe your face is one of them. Tvs first live interactive music competition, where you can make or break dreams in an instant. Intaunt results. Instant fame. Were not the judges. You are. Its so good to have josh groban here with us this morning. Talking about rising star. Youre not only the judge. Youre the host. Im the host of the show. Oh, god. That just dawned on me as you said that. Im the host of this show. And its great. Its so much fun for me because i spend so much time kind of in front of my own mic and singing my own songs. And to have a chance to mentor young singers and work with them and to guide them through this hairraising process. And to be on Live Television and carry a show like this is a new challenge and something im looking forward to. Explain how this is going to work. This is based on a revolutionary technology for Live Television. And based on an app that anybody can download. As they watch the show and watch the singers on the tv show, theyre not having to wait until a results show. Theyre watching with an app in their hand. And they can swipe for yes. They with swipe for no. And they can vote live with the performance. And theyre the judges, as to whether or not this wall will go up and the performer will go through. And my goodness. And my job is to make sure nobody gets crushed by the wall on Live Television. And hopefully, to give them good advice, and other experts. The panel of experts, brad paisley. And ludacris. Very eclectic. How much does the panel of experts count . They will get a vote, as well. So, they will be voting with the rest of america. But their vote, you know, they cant their vote alone wont do it. Its like 7 . About 7 . Its important that the experts like who is up there. And their critiques will be invaluable to the performers as they make it or dont make it. But truly, this is going to rely entirely on families getting together in front of the tv and saying we want this person to win. Or we dont think this person has it. You talked about the app. You want to show us in social square . Lets walk into our social square. I know. Hes the host of Good Morning America now, too. Allow me to take you to the social square here. People on the west coast are going to be saying, how does it work . Fly to the east coast. But the west coast will have a vote . Yes, they will. It will be absolutely live to the majority of the country. And on the west coast, theyre going to film in live for the west coast. The west coast vote is going to matter. If somebody didnt get by with an east coast vote alone, the west coast vote could bump it over the edge. Wow. There is a way to do it. Theres an app for that. And this gentleman is not going to be on your screen when you download the app. Im sure you would love it if that were the case. Its daunting. Your soul belongs to me now. As you get to it, it will say swipe ready to vote. And then, swipe blue for yes and red for no. Its that simple. Blue there. And as the same screen every time. And then, yep. Same screen. Same screen. Ready to vote. You get to the be host, you have to get used to this. Now would be the time when i go into my samba. Entertain america with yeah. Basically i think weve been hacked by this gentleman. Ready to vote. Oh, my god. Basically, the reason it looks so simple is because it is basically simple. There arent many things for you to do on the app. Very userfriendly. Very easy to use. And youll see it. Its blue and red. You swipe yes or no. And that technology will go immediately to the wall on the stage. And theyll be able to see the votes. Also, you can put the picture in the app. When you vote, you get to see your picture. Is it a free app . Its free. A slight 14. 95 groban shipping and handling. Three easy payments. 100 free. 100 free. Youre going to be a natural. These hankies are not cheap. All of the best to you. I hope people tune in and have fun with this. Im sure we will. Rising star premieres june 22nd, 9 00 p. M. Eastern, and pacific, on abc. And theyre holding a Live Audience test monday night, in the half hour, so viewers can learn how to download the app better than we did right there. And you can raise the wall. Lets get adam joseph from our philadelphia station, wpvi. We have one loud crowd out here in times square. Im having fun in new york city. But im feeling brotherly love here, as well. Absolutely. A little drizzle, not going to worry your hair. Dont worry. Theres severe storms were watching in the deep south today. Especially in eastern texas and dallas east, of little rock and memphis. Large hail and strong winds. Across the country, a little cooler in los angeles. 68 degrees. Showers moving into the pacific northwest. And in the northeast, showers could be drenching and local. Reporter thank you Adam Joseph David Murphy on the terrace. Weve got a little mist and some fog around the region. A bigger issue comes this afternoon where a flash flood is in effect because of spotty thunderstorms. All that weather is brought to you by d. Q. Im going to steal this hat. A lot of philly love. Look at number two on that list. My dad is annoying. Annoying. No. I they thats a good thing that its it means the dads are doing their job, right . You would say that. Only defense i have. I have seen you with your girls. And you call them each and every morning. And it is annoying. But its lovely to watch. Coming up here, viola davis here talking about her new passion viola davis has two Oscar Nominations and critical acclaim. But this morning, shes here with another of her passions, the fight to eradicate childhood hunger. I dont like to go to school hungry. I dont think anybody should go to School Without eating. Everybody should be able to eat. Im viola davis. I was one of those children. I was one of the nearly 17 million kids in the United States who worried where theyre next meal will come from. And viola is here with us live this morning. This is something, first of all, good morning. Good morning to you, too. Its always great to have you here. Back at you tenfold. This is something dear to you. And something you went through as a child. I partnered with Entertainment Industry foundation and Safeway Foundation because they wanted to eliminate childhood hunger in america. And i love the word eliminate. Not just help. But to eradicate it. And i do have a personal story because i was a kid who grew up hungry. I grew up in abject poverty. I grew up in buildings that had no plumbing and no phone. And infested with rats and no food. And what it caused me to do, it caused me to steal food. It caused me to jump in dumpsters looking for food, as a kid. And it caused me to have a lot of shame because i used that to identify who i was. And then, i partnered with safeway and Entertainment Industry foundation. And you find out that one in five kids suffer from some form of childhood hunger, going to school hungry. Insecure homes. 17 million children that you begin to understand, its not just your problem. Its a problem on a wider scale in the richest country of the world. And it was my way of reconciling the past. And reconciling my childhood. In the short time, its hard to raise 4. 5 million. But its so powerful to have that campaign. And for also, for young people who are going through what they are going through, to look at you and say, okay. I can get through this. And when we see you, on the big screen, and going back to television. Working with shonda rhimes. Absolutely. Tell us about that show. How to get away with murder . Its outside of my comfort zone because i play someone who is sexy and mysterious. Usually im not mysterious. You know who i am. Im always warm and fuzzy and im never messy. And im not touching any hunky guys that have no shirts on. This is a chance for me to be outside of my comfort zone. And i think thats a great metaphor for life. You know . At this stage in my life. I want to be uncomfortable. That means im taking risks. And youre in great hands with shonda. She owns thursday nights. Im in great hands with shonda. But i dont know what to expect. You let the hunky guys take their shirts off. Ill just put my hands on them. I dont want to take my shirt off. I think its all going to work out just fine for you. And youre also, the james brown bio. Get on up. Thats the name of it. And you are being reunited with some good friends. Yeah. Ike taylor and octavia spencer. And all my friends from the help. But Chadwick Bozeman is the star of the show. Playing such an iconic character, james brown. I think its going to make you get up on your feet. It will. And i told you when i saw you, youre not a very likable character in this one. Hey, look, listen, once again, ive always been likable. You always know who i am. Im always warm and fuzzy. You know . I want you not to like me. Come on. Thats impossible. But it shows the range at what youre doing, onscreen, off screen, big screen, little screen. I want to emphasize, too, that you can go to hungeris. Org to see what you can do to kind of help me and the Entertainment Industry foundation, safeway, on this fight, to donate money. To educate. To inform yourself on whats happening here in this country. And to get involved. Live a life bigger than yourself. Bigger than hash tags. They do the hash tag and think thats great. But come on. Get involved. Youre helping our children. Thank you. Viola, great to see you. You can go to our website, too, to learn more about the campaign. Well be right back. You know we love you. We can never be mad at you. Always fun. We want to welcome one of the newest members of our gma family, aaron miles bernstein. Mom and baby both doing great. Congratulations to her, her husband, jason. And a new big brother in the family. Youre right. We love when the family is expanding like that.
