We are feeling it here on the outer banks with the strong wind gusts and sustained winds up to 75 Miles Per Hour. And we are bracing for the eye to pass through here any minute. Hurricane arthur lashing North Carolinas coastline. Making landfall overnight near cape lookout, as a category 2, with more than 100mileperhour winds. The storm, breaking flooding, widespread Power Outages and reports of tornadoes. First thing when i got my kids in the living room. Then, we took them to the bathroom. And we were headed into the bathroom, the ceiling was just collapsing behind us. Reporter arthur then moving north up the coast. Nearly 400 miles wide, taking aim on the outer banks. On hatteras island, evacuations were mandatory. And elsewhere, many vacationers visiting for the july 4th weekend, chose to head out before the revere weather moved in. I think it messes up the holiday for everyone. Just a bad situation. Theres nothing else you can really do. Were packing up to head to safer grounds. And hope they call us back. Reporter no heading back to the beach just yet, as arthur continues pummeling the shoreline. And theyre not just keeping an eye on the extreme winds and rain, with a possible storm surge here up to five feet, there is a serious concern about flooding. Reena and tahman . I believe that, marci. Have you seen people that decided not to evacuate . Reporter absolutely. For most of the outer banks, there was not mandatory evacuations. A lot of people decided to ride out the storm. Theyre hoping this will clear up later today and they might be able to enjoy the rest of the july 4th weekend. Im wondering if many of the people who stayed behind are having a dry night. In our hotel, the ceilings are leaking. Probably some similar problems for others along the outer banks. All right. But the winds are causing mounds of seafoam on the atlantic ocean. He filed this report earlier when the hurricane came ashore. Reporter its kicking up winds over 100 Miles Per Hour. Those gusts are very powerful. Caught a lot of folks unaware. Evacuation order sometimes take days. A lot of folks staying here. People in trailers are coming to hotels to stay out of the wind. Much more fierce and much more direct than people expected. I dont know if you can see the power lines up here, but across the street, they are flickering. Transformers have been exploding everywhere. That apartment block is dark. Ours went out a lot earlier. Tens of thousands of people are without power. That number is going to rise also. Rain is coming down, stinging. We expect at least four inches of rain here tonight. Heavy flooding could be here by tomorrow morning. Clearly, this wind is pretty bad. Im going to get out of this. Wow. Incredibly remarkable. Long before North Carolina started feeling the impact of arthur, officials were taking every precaution necessary. Earlier, we spoke with dorothy killingsworth, with the officer of emergency management. The Early Morning hours are going to be the most difficult. The storm is here. The conditions are going to worsen. And Everyone Needs to be advised, until this storm has passed us tomorrow morning at daybreak, the best thing to do is to stay indoors. Plans are in place. D. O. T. Has staged equipment. Well have assessment teams out as soon as its possible for them to get out. So, everythings in place to do what we need to do once the storm passes. The system came in near cape lookout. 101 Miles Per Hour. A combination of arthur and a front in the northeast, making for a miserable fourth of july. Take a closer view of the system. There it is, moving up across the south. Center circulation crossing the outer banks. Just to the south of kill devil hills. Around avon, winds sustained at 73 Miles Per Hour. And we had some gusts up to about 90 Miles Per Hour right near cape hatteras. Its really blowing here. The center will move offshore by 5 00 a. M. Well have wind gusts through 7 00 a. M. Here on the outer banks. After that, things should start to subside rapidly as the system cruises out to sea. Its moving right along now, picking up speed about 22 Miles Per Hour. Your hurricane warnings. Tropical storm warnings in southeast virginia. And wet and windy around virginia beach. And our system will move rapidly offshore. The rain will wind down. Some places have seen close to six inches of rain. Flooding, a concern. And the sounds of the water building up, too. Youre going to have water throughout the morning hours, a storm surge.
