We continue to follow breaking news out of center city we go back to the federal courthouse where the fbi is talking about Seth Williamss guilty plea. At this time, i would like to invite assistant special agent in charterance mcmahon to the microphone to make a few comments. Good afternoon im tara mcmahon acting special agent in charge for the philadelphia field office. While in office Seth Williams sought to portray himself as a man of the people. A print principled public server and performer devoted to public service. Mr. Williams talked a good game but talk is all it was, he felt entitled to a certain lifestyle he traded on his title of District Attorney in return for financial favors large and small. We are grat if i had that mr. Williams eelected to change his plea and i would like to take a moment to recognize the Prosecution Team and the Investigative Team on this case. Special agents humphreys and halligan and pohar. Thank you for outstanding work in this case. Im going introduce acting special agent greg floyd of the irs. Good afternoon im greg floyd acting special agent in charge of irs special investigation. The gifts that mr. Williams received represents a degree to which he cheated the public. No public official gets a free pass. Irs ci will continue to assure that the elected officialed abide by their oath and fulfill their duties they were elected to fulfill. I want to take a quick moment to thank acting special agent in charge, floyd. The Irs Criminal Investigation Division does a tremendous job and played a crucial role in the investigation of mr. Williams. With that we are happy to take a few questions. That is a decision that reserved for the court. Judge diamond heard the evidence and evaluated the facts and applied it to the law and made his decision. Is that anything you have seen before . There is not much we havent seen. The city and those living in the city, another one of our elected officials having to go to prison what does it mean for viewers living at home paycheck to paycheck. What it mean is that they can rest assured with the federal government and the irs and hsi and United States Attorneys Office are always vigilant on the lookout for corrupt conduct and fairly and appropriately prosecute anybody that crosses the line. And the judge he described this as Seth Williams selling his office. How would you describe his office . I think the judge capture tropical disturbance perfectly. There is no question that Seth Williams sold his office for a corrupt stream of business and today mr. Williams was held accountable. What about the [ inaudible ]. Im not going to comment on anything outside of the record itself [ inaudible ]. We are not in the position of giving advice to the city of philadelphia but what we can say is we are here and watching. How did this whole trial [ inaudible ]. Well, obviously a tremendous amount of work goes foo a case like this. The agents and prosecutors worked on this case for a number of years and then of course aggressively and vigorously the last few months, the indictment was returned only in march thark is a tribute to the agents of the irs and fbi and Homeland Security. And all the support from the u. S. Attorneys office in new jersey and philadelphia to bring this together in such a short period of time. [ inaudible ]. Well, ill limit it to what was said in court. There were obviously many time theres are different leads that come together and one particular lead was described in court which is that Homeland Security was doing an investigation regarding mr. Ali possibly for Money Laundering and questions regarding his transactions that led overseas. It was during that investigation that the Homeland Security official saw cant with Seth Williams on mr. Alis cell phone and then that person brought in the fbi and eventually the irs and one thing led to another [ inaudible ]. Mr. Sullivan testified that he contacted the assistant special agent in charge and no further testimony reporting anything that happened in terms of the investigation with the fbi after that. Like i said leads tend to come together. What would you have asked him of course i would have cross examined Seth Williams if he testified and addressed his testimony. What is the first thing you would have asked him . I couldnt tell you that. Crossexamination is in response to the testimony and i would have to hear it he wanted to get up there were many allegations, mr. Fitzpatrick talked eloquently about the different charged and the fraud charged involving the nursing home if he testified i would have covered all of that. A message from 1 00 a. M. What was your reaction to that . I said in court there were discussions with the defendant starting weeks ago, it was this morning at 1 00 a. M. That mr. Burke reached me and said they wanted to accept the deal we had discussed which was this plea to one count that you heard with an admission of all the other Christmas Nat conduct in the indictment. I said i would address it with my superiors and i did and we prepared the plea agreement that was brought in. In termed of my reaction that is not really important. [ inaudible ]. No, we did not address that in the plea agreement that. Was up to the judge. [ inaudible ]. The evidence i think as mr. Fitzpatrick said was extremely strong. It was very clear that mr. Williams was accepting benefits in exchange for his official conduct and clear he defrauded the nursing home and many of you heard that evidence in court. We are in the middle of presenting the evidence regarding his Political Action committee and would have talked about the vehicles and you heard mr. Williams admitted every single bit of that conduct. That answers your question as to how powerful the evidence was. [ inaudible ]. I cant comment on that, i was not asked my opinion by the judge. He made his opinion. [ inaudible ]. Personally many, and collectively we have done many more. Unfortunately. [ inaudible ]. I have been involved in a number of Corruption Cases, and city hall Corruption Case involving corey kemp. And and i have handle many other Corruption Cases in that regard. Ill say what mr. Fitzpatrick said its unfortunately we have to gather like this and add corruption in the city and state of pennsylvania. Fortunately at the same time there are thousands of honest Public Servants in this commonwealth and city. And if they question if they should remain honest should see the vigilance of the District Attorney and we are gather if we need to. There have been prosecutions historically with officials, i cannot think of one offhand with the District Attorney of the city. [ inaudible ]. I have not researched that. [ inaudible ]. I am very privileged to serve the government in whatever capacity they allow me to serve. [ inaudible ]. Thank you all very much. Thank you for coming.
