Derailment here in philadelphia. Nora we learned the name of the engineer at the controls at the time of the crash didnt we . Reporter we did indeed. He is Thomas Gallagher and we are told he is in Critical Condition in the hospital right now. The big question is how could this happen. How does a train fail to stop and slam into a train station. The ntsb is on the case now and as the investigation begins, people that were here this morning when it happened describe an ugly scene. It looked really bad and people were bleeding everywhere and stunned and looking around and a lot of people on the ground. Witnesses say it was chaos after transit train 1614 blasted in the hoboken train station leaving twisted metal and broken bodies. I was sitting on the train and we were not slowing and approaching the stake and i was confusioned and by the time you register you were going to hit you already hit. One woman was killed at station and 100 others were injured. It started off as a typical commute. I believe the people in the front were badly injured. They started yelling once they saw the blood. But it was super packed and shorter train and its standard now where there are shorter trains and more people in the cars. Governor christie in new york and Governor Cuomo says that the engineer survived and is in the hospital and cooperating with authorities. We know what happened but not why it happens. The train came in at too high a rate of speed and did not stop and went through the barriers. The train did not have positive train control the system that could automatically slow it down. A technician from bear, delaware ran to the scene and described what he saw. I ran out real quick and looked to the right and bodies trying to get up and blood and cracks in the head but crazy looking but i didnt see the train and looked up and saw the hole and im still thinking bomb, and i looked up further and saw the train in the wall. I thought whoa i couldnt believe it. Reporter there are now structural concerns about the train station that must be addressed and as the investigation continues, rush hour here in this area is an absolute mess, there are police all over here trying to move people around because the trains are not running through the station here and it is one big mess. Live in hoboken, im nora muchanic, channel 6 action news. Thank you. Septa says they are taking every precaution possible to make sure that a crash like that doesnt happen in pennsylvania. They installed positive train control, and a safety measure and is expected to be fully implemented by the end of the year congressman dated that they be in place by the end of last year and then extended to 2018. Todays crash is an eerie reminder of this scene in philadelphia just 16 months ago. On may 12th, 2015 eight people died and 200 injured when an amtrak train derailed. Action News Reporter, Wendy Saltzman is live at 30th street station with more on that story. Reporter well, this accident this morning is a reminder to many of these passengers when they get on the train in the morning or coming home in the afternoon they are putting their life in the hands of another person and after the tragedy in philadelphia, it has commuters in philadelphia wondering why more hasnt been done to avoid another derailment. The wreckage in 2015, eight lives lost when an engineer believed to be distracted hit a curve going more than twice the speed limit. That is what happened in philadelphia and this morning in hoboken, some of the details are eerily similar. Its quite a concern because i ride the train every day. Southwest philly resident sam hill drives more. I would rather be safe than sorry. And train travel is on the mines of area commuters. There say risk and you feel the risk. Passengers are looking back to the 2015 crash and praying for todays victims. That this would happen again is unthinkable. Attorneys tom klein ron, defended people in the amtrak crash, says that the derailment should be a wakeup call that more automatic safety controls are needed. Speed kills and positive train control saves lives. In the aftermath of the amtrak 188 crash, they were suppose to be installing positive train controls and speed mechanisms but for the engineers here and in new jersey today the change comes too late. I think they need to check out themselves more regularly to make sure the trains are safe. Just a normal day for then all of a sudden you are not here now. Although there has been an extension for the time on the railroads to install the positive train controls there is no doubt in light of this accident, the train and railroads will be pressured inputting the safe guards in safer before more lives are lost.
