A texas nurse is diagnosed with ebola and tonight Health Officials are not sure how it happened. Now the increasing effort to stop the spread of this potentially deadly disease. She was caring for that man Thomas Duncan the first ebola patient to die in the u. S. Good evening, im chris may. Im jessica dean. The 26yearold north nurse is the first to become infected on u. S. Soil. The new case calls for a new line of thinking. Hazmat teams dee contaminated the dallas apartment of nina fam the newest face of ebola in the u. S. The nurse contracted the disease while treating Thomas Eric Duncan at Texas Health Presbyterian hospital. Duncan was the first person diagnosed with ebola in the u. S. And last week became the countrys first fatality. Pham treated him. We have to rethink the way we address ebola Infection Control. Reporter the cdc says there was a breach in protocol and pham might have been exposed while removing protective gear. The hospital has start add buddy system in which workers supervise each other while suiting up and removing gear but thats a very recent change. We need to consider the possibility that there could be additional cases particularly among the healthcare workers who cared for the index patient when he was so ill. Reporter president obama spent much of the day focusing on the u. S. Response to ebola both here at home and in west africa where more than 4,000 people have died. The president huddled with National Security and public Health Officials for a Conference Call with other world leaders. The cdc says the key to stopping ebola spread around the world is to contain the virus in west africa. At the white house, Craig Boswell for Eyewitness News on the cw philly. Local hospitals say theyre ready to handle potential ebola patients but the local nurses union disagrees. A statement from hospital and Health System association of pennsylvania reads in part hospitals in the region and state have been reviewing and adhering to guidance from the centers for Disease Control and prevention, Pennsylvania Department of health, and local Public Health authorities regarding the recommended best methods for safely screening, isolating and caring for patients who may have been exposed to ebola. Hospitals will continue to stay abreast of the latest cdc and other Public Health guidance and to follow these recommendations. Still, the president of the pennsylvania nurses union says workers are behind the eight ball. I think theyre trying to keep up with the cdc but the regulations coming out of the cdc have not been, you know, as forthright and specific as they should be and i dont think every individual hospital should have to try to figure out these particulars. I think it should be centralized. The nurses union also wants education in effective isolation procedures and Infection Control for all hospital employees. The Philadelphia Health department told Eyewitness News last week its working with local hospitals to ensure all precautions are taken. Now new at 10 oclock firsthand account from a man who was knocked cold on a philadelphia street. We first brought you video of this friday night. Tonight he spoke exclusively with Eyewitness News reporter diana rocco. I have a fractured jaw. Reporter 24 year old shane kerry has difficulty talking and cant eat. Thursday a vicious attack left his jaw wired shut. Were just taking it a day at a time. Reporter cell phone video shows shane unconscious in the street after a group of teens on bikes threw water in his face and hit him from behind. It happened last thursday on the corner of 19th and fairmount. Saw a bunch of kids on bikes and they were beating in side view mirrors on parked cars. Reporter shane confronted the group and told them to stop when they began to follow him and call him names. They started threatening me, all the kids on the street corner, pointing at me. Reporter and within seconds he was hit without ever seeing his attacker. The teens scattered but a couple living nearby ran to help. Thats the next thing shane remembers. My head was being cradled by this woman and i couldnt really understand what was going on but she was putting gauze to my head so i wandered to thank her for doing that for me. It was it was a parents Worst Nightmare but i just want to thank her because it sounds like it could have been a lot worse. Reporter a witness was able to identify the boys, a 16yearold and two 12 year olds were arrested. Also wanted for harassing another couple in their car a half hour earlier on 18th and lombard street. I just think that people shouldnt be scared to live in their own neighborhood. Reporter shane has decided to take a break from his philly life while he recovers at his parents nome williamsport. The three juveniles arrested were charged with criminal conspiracy and aggravated assault but it is possible more arrests may follow as Police Continue to investigate. In williamsport, im diana rocco for Eyewitness News on the cw philly police in palmyra investigating burglaries and vandalism in that community. Between friday and sunday there were two burglaries and one attempted burglary. The crimes happened near Veterans Drive arch street and west third street. No one was at home at the time. Also late saturday or early sunday in less than a mile away cars and properties were vandalized with graffiti along garfield avenue. Because the cars were wet with dew the paint was able to be wiped off. If you have any information youre asked to contact palmyra police. Its been one month and one day since an ambush left one Pennsylvania State trooper dead and another seriously injured. Police were able to determine that eric frein traveled a certain direction through evidence collected at a campsite. They have spotted him as well but so far hes not been captured. Falling leaves, however, they say will mean less protection and fewer hiding spots for frein but Officials Say it does work both ways. Police will see and be seen by the suspected killer. Tonight a fire that ripped through a local dance studio appears to be the work of and arsonist. The blaze broke out around 4 30 this morning at the bucks county dance studio in bensalem. Investigators tell us that they have found evidence that suggests it was intentionally set. The owners of the studio have a lot of unanswered questions. It makes me angry. Its it makes me wonder why anyone would want to do that. I cant imagine that there would be anyone that would have any malicious intent against the studio. Well, fire crews remained on the scene for several hours throughout the day putting out hot spots. The lone bit of good news here is no one was injured. Take a look now outside in center city. The fog pushing through the area tonight. You can see it clearly on top of Philadelphia City hall just right now. Meteorologist kathy orr joining us from the Weather Center with a check on the first forecast. Kathy. Foggy conditions spreading and especially intense as you head towards the north and east and west of philadelphia. Well take a look at that. But first were looking at dry conditions as far as the rain is concerned but we do have mist and fog out there, temperatures basically in the 60s along the i95 corridor south and east alittle bit cooler through the Lehigh Valley and the poconos. We are watching as the visibilities continue to go down in this warmer and also moist air mass. You can see in allentown down to a mile, in the poconos a half mile, the same in lancaster but i do think this area through our northern and western suburbs, through the Lehigh Valley and the poconos will be the ones that really have issues come tomorrow morning. So were talking about areas of dense fog, basically between 4 00 a. M. And 7 00 a. M. Tomorrow morning being at their worst. Our northern and western suburbs being hit as well as points farther to the north like the Lehigh Valley and the poconos and then visibility going down to a half mile at times in this region. It has to go down to about a quarter mile to have a dense fog advisory issued by the weather service. Then turning stormy as we watch our next front move toward the region with showers and thunderstorms. Thats coming up a little bit later this week. The leg was returned early this morning but the person who stole it from sonny forest while outside last nights eagles game is still out there. He was performing music outside the stadium when the theft happened. The leg was found on a subway station at the fern rock station. He has a suggestion for how the thief should be punished. Forest says his leg was stolen by a woman while he was performing songs outside the linc. A tentative deal has been reached between september tan its rail engineers. The two sides came to an agreement today. Septa officials tell Eyewitness News the deal will result in a 11. 5 percent raise for workers. Now to a Daring Rescue with a mans life in the balance a tractortrailer crashed and ended up dangling over the side of an overpass with that driver still inside. 60 firefighters worked to free that driver. He sat there hanging in midair in rochester new york for almost two hours. The trucks fuel tank burst which complicated efforts for rescue crews. Eventually they were able to rescue that driver. He was taken to the hospital and suffered only minor injuries. Another Daring Rescue this one in colorado. Watch as this man in Colorado Springs pulls a neighbor from burning pickup. The man had suffered a seizure and ended up flooring the gas pedal in the process. A few minutes later the truck began to fill with smoke and that neighbor saved the day just in the nick of time. On storm scan3 were looking at fairly dry conditions but this is a sprawling area of low pressure and associated cold front and when you see this comma shape, you know that it is an intense system. Severe weather associated with it from tennessee all the way down through the deep south and all this is moving toward the east and as it does, well be seeing some warmer air moving our way before the storms move in from the west. Right now temperatures fairly mild. Philadelphia 66, the same in millville, Atlantic City and wildwood. 50s through the Lehigh Valley and the poconos. And you can see temperatures fairly uniform from north to south because of that light southeasterly flow. We will watch as this warm front lifts through the region. Temperatures will be warming up with these strong southerly winds for your tuesday and the fog will give way to mild temperatures. The same goes for wednesday where temperatures will make it to 80 degrees in some spots. Well watch this cold front approach from the west. The best chance of rain will be the west of philadelphia for wednesday. Then this front moves through thursday. We see some drying conditions and then were back to more seasonable temperatures for the end of the week but future weather shows the rain as far the end of the week but future wednesday mainly through the Lehigh Valley, Lancaster County and staying to the west of philadelphia through 7 00 p. M. This progress eastward through thursday with some showers and some thunderstorms. Feeling more like springtime storms around the region. More like spring than october. Overnight look for some areas of dense fog especially to our northern and western suburbs and through the Lehigh Valley. The low temperature around 60 degrees so it will be mild.
