Is cbs3 Eyewitness News. Right now at 10 oclock, family and friends mourn the loss of a student athlete whose life was cut short in a tragic car crash. Good evening, im chris may. Im jessica dean. Tonight more than 1,000 people attended a candlelight vigil in linwood atlantic county. Eyewitness News Reporter diana rocco was at Mainland Regional High School for tonights emotional remembrance. Reporter members of the Girls Soccer Team wrapped their arms around ashland cooks number. She would have been a starting freshman for us but its her soul were celebrating and her life and the expression of her heart. Reporter more than 1,000 students and friends packed the schools football stadium. They gathered for a moment of silence then lit candles on the field all to remember the 14yearold who died one day before her first day of high school of. Cook succumbed to injuries she sniffed a crash on saturday. She was in a car with four teammates in mays landing on the way to a tournament. Cook was critically injured when a truck going in the opposite direction on route 40 crossed the yellow line. She was a team player. She was one of my best members. Scoring that goal in the final seconds to win the championship for us. She was the nicest girl there ever is. She never said anything mean about anybody ever. Reporter good teammate. Really good. She was a great soccer player, too. She was just the sweetest girl. I cant believe this happened. Reporter mainland is no stranger to heartbreak. Just three years ago four members of the High School Football team were killed in a car crash on their way to a team meal. School begins here at mainland regional in the morning where a moment of silence will be held for ash lynn. Her soccer team takes the field next week for the first game without her but her number four jersey will be retired until the year they should have graduated. In linwood atlantic county, diana rocco for Eyewitness News on the cw philly. One of the three Council Rock South High School Students killed in a crash over the weekend was laid to rest today. 16yearold Cullen Keffer was buried at a private service. He along with ryan lesher and Shamus Digney died in a crash in the poconos saturday. Today classmates started their new school year with a moment of silence in memory of those boys. The 15yearold girl who was driving the suv without a license now faces charges. There is breaking news tonight from ferguson, missouri. The Justice Department is launching a civil investigation into the Police Department in that city after an officer shot and killed 18yearold Michael Brown last month. Brown was unarmed when he was shot and his death sparked nights of rioting in the streets of ferguson. One source says the focus of the investigation will be the Police Departments practices and training procedures. Also breaking right now a body is found inside of a burning car in the olney section of philadelphia. Officers made that discovery just before 8 oclock tonight in the 6100 block of North Lawrence street. Police believe this may be connected to a shooting that happened earlier in the day on roseland street. So far no arrests have been made in either incident. Well, a recent run of high profile hackings has many worried about their personal and financial information. The home depot alerted customers of a possible breach of credit and debit cards. Tonight the retailer has hired Computer Security firms to help determine if customer information was stolen. The home depot also posted this warning for customers, were looking into some unusual activity that might indicate a possible payment data breach and were working with our badging partners and Law Enforcement to investigate. Eyewitness News Reporter knoll noel mclaren. Reporter first target with 40 million shoppers info stolen electronically. Now a potentially bigger breach at the home depot. The company just alerted customers of a possible payment data hack. Theres nothing we can do. Reporter home depot reps took to twitter apologizing to their customers. They said if they do find a breach of security, they will be held responsible as well as banks but that did little to calm customers. We found many philadelphia shoppers are going back to payment basics to protect themselves. Because of stuff like this is why i do all cash. Yeah. I dont even like using my debit card here. Reporter but drexel Cyber Security expert says there are options that dont involve disconnecting. He suggests getting credit cards with lower limit values. Theres limited damage that can be done. Reporter prepaid plastic is also safer. Limiting any access to personal identifiable information. Reporter and on all on High Pressure accounts including cloud storage, he says typical user name and password com bows are no longer enough. Reliable cloud and banking providers will often use a second layer of security like a series of questions. You want another layer of authentication, that second factor. You want that in a service provider. Reporter hackers will keep evolving but experts say you can stay out of their cross hairs by evolving with them to protect yourself. In university city, noel mclaren, cbs3 Eyewitness News. Meanwhile apple is scrambling to reassure customers its icloud is secure. Hackers were able to steal hundreds of risque celebrity photos from that remote storage system. Apple has made clear that cyber thieves did not breach its system but rather hacked individual accounts. Security experts say its up to us as consumers to create stronger pass words and be selective with what is stored online. More help is on the way tonight for laid off casino workers in Atlantic City. Egg harbor township hosted an information session for residents who have been affected by casino closings. Earlier today hundreds attended a similar session at the Atlantic City convention center. Representatives from several agencies helped former workers there apply for both Unemployment Benefits and other benefits. Knowing that were closing these doors and putting people out of work was just devastating for all of us. But its a time to come together. This is a time to rally. A rally of a different sort filled Kennedy Plaza this afternoon as the city tried to focus on its future. The contestants in the miss America Pageant introduced themselves to the public. The pageant will be held sunday september 14th. Officials say they want to be sure they are part of Atlantic Citys renewal. Well, there is a push on tonight for more police on the streets in northeast philadelphia. This comes from the same area in which a nineyearold boy was grazed by a bullet yesterday. That boy was leaving with his mother from a library in tacony when the shots were fired. Now, this happened not far from where a Philadelphia Police officer was grazed by a bullet just a few short weeks ago. Both shootings happened in the 15th police district. I think there should be more cops in the neighborhood most definitely. Theyre the ones that protect us. Councilman bobby heenan has been pushing to split that 15th district in two to increase the number of Police Officers in the many neighborhoods that make up that area. The man who escaped from jail in Montgomery County earlier this week is back behind bars. Raehib hankerson is being held on a 250,000 bail after his escape this week. Police say hankerson broke out of the Montgomery County correctional facility in eagleville monday. He was arrested after being on the run for a couple of hours. Well, it is september and its about to get sizzling again. Perfect night to be out and about in collingswood, camden county. But more hot muggy weather is on the way. Lets go to the Weather Center now. Kathy orr is standing by with the first forecast. Kathy. Right now, chris, were looking at some mild temperatures across the region. In some spots, that is. Philadelphia were at 78 degrees but look at millville, only 69 and the poconos at 58. So, a sharp contrast from north to south with millville our usual cool spot with light winds and some clear skies. We are talking about clearing skies across the region and with al light northwesterly wind, we could see some areas of fog especially in the poconos, so please be aware of that. And as we continue to progress through the week, its going to be heat but also humidity that makes a comeback and heres a look at how it will feel. Now, during the day tomorrow a little bit on the humid side but by the time friday and saturday roll around, it will be feeling oppressive and that means that sent sizzle will be getting under way. So, this is what we have to talk about in the seven day. The heat will be peaking this week. Republican state representative mike vrab hostd that forum. He announced his support for a bill that would allow medical marijuana in the state. Tonights panel included two mothers who say their sons would benefit if the measure would be passed. Medical marijuana is already legal in both new jersey and delaware. Rick sakrab isolated himself when he first noticed symptoms. He was not working in an ebola clinic. The top priority on College Campuses is to protect students but how do you do that when so many thousands of students actually live off campus. That was the challenge presented to the Security Team at Temple University and as our erika von tiehl shows us the solution is one that benefits both the students and neighbors. Reporter as students settle into the fall semester at Temple University, its patrols are stepping up efforts to keep them safe. I think its exciting. I think the students are happy, the neighbors are happy. I think its going to build a good communities for us. Reporter temple is expanding their patrol borders to control crime off campus. We want to create another layer of protection for everyone. When we get to the middle of the campus all all the way out o the extended borders we have a very safe zone weve created. Reporter heres the new patrol area, the western boundary extendsing from 16th street to 18th street. The eastern boundary will be ninth street, the northern susquehanna avenue. And the southern boundary will be jefferson street. Its easy for students to feel safe here on campus in the middle of the day but now this extended patrol area is helping them also feel safe late at night walking home. I was walking home about two nights ago around 1 00 a. M. And two cop cars passed me so i felt real safe there. Reporter Temple Police and private security personnel will be patrolling this New Territory protecting off campus students and neighbors alike. I feel saver especially when i have to leave for work earlier. It makes me feel safer just in case an incident were to happen i know im safe cause i know i got people. A five Year Old Girl is expected to be okay after she got stuck inside of a running washing machine. This happened in pasadena, texas, which is not far from houston. Girl got inside but eyewitnesses say that she spun around several times while that machine was on the high speed rinse cycle. The little girl was set free as soon as someone realized she was inside. Its unclear where her parents were at the time. In weather tonight, we are talking about Cool Conditions and some mild conditions. It all depends on where you are. Down the shore pretty comfortable tonight. In Atlantic City with light winds and moonlit skies on a very pleasant wednesday night. Now, we are looking at conditions that are going to change. Our live Neighborhood Network shows us the temperatures 76 in philadelphia, trenton at the Mercer County airport 73, bensalem the same but Dover International speed way only 71 degrees and falling. On storm storm scan3 we had some showers to the south that are trying to creep northward through the midatlantic but High Pressure to the north is keeping all this to the south and pushing some clouds back south as well. So, we are in for a clear night and plenty of sunshine tomorrow. 58 in the poconos, 78 in philadelphia, 20degree differential and in millville with light winds and clear skies already down to 69. Atlantic city at 72. High pressure is the big story with sinking air and plenty of sunshine to go around, temperatures will soar well into the 80s with an increase in humidity. You will feel the difference but it really will feel oppressive by friday. More like summer with temperatures in the 90s. A spotty shower or thunderstorm possible in the afternoon but a better chance saturday with this front. Gets a little bit closer, sets off some showers and storms afternoonevening time frame with heat and humidity and behind this a much drier and cooler air mass to settle in by sunday. So, the relief comes in sunday. All that cool air thats been trapped through the great lakes and the Northern Plains will finally push south. Thats saturday night. And sunday perhaps a few morning showers giving way to drier conditions that cooler canadian air settling in with High Temperature in the upper 70s. It still will feel warm but just not oppressive. So, well go from summer to fall just like that. Overnight mainly clear, comfortable, the low 66. During the day thursday mostly sunny, more humid, the high near 90 and if youre heading down the shore to really two really nice days in store. Thursday 84 and during the day friday 85. The u. V. Index still at nine even though were in september. And on the exclusive eyewitness weather sevenday forecast, friday, saturday in the 90s. Sunday 79. The same monday. Next week looks really nice.
