Where are the guns coming from . New york city and chicago have the toughest Gun Legislation laws in the country. These guns are coming from a place referred to as the iron pipeline. The iron pipeline comes through places like virginia, North Carolina and florida. We need federal legislation to effectively zap this problem. Its a matter of time. The problem is the nra is a strong proponent for Gun Legislation that protects these firearms from coming in. Ernie tony, let me ask you. The gun buyback programs, do they work . I dont think they really work. I think what happens is these individuals get the money and go buy a better gun quite frankly. Weve known that to be the case. Its great expertise with regards to that policing aspect of it. From the street level, what were finding is that these guns are getting in the hands of individuals because there are people that look like them bringing them into the community. Ernie we have a lot of rallies, guns, and people are concerned about it. We had it in east harlem, far rockaway and other communities. Does it do any good . What else do we need . The gun buyback programs bring an awareness to the community. It needs to be collaborative from local and federal Law Enforcement in the communities. Those three components need to come together for a solution. If your next door neighbor has a firearm, call the police. Let them know. Once again, as i mentioned in the earlier part, its the federal legislation we need to eradicate the illegal gun use in the city. The rallies do help. They help a lot. We need eyes and ears of individuals in the community. They have brought fruit to bear. They are picking up the phones and calling the hotlines. We need more to do that. We do the rallies to bring about the awareness, to ignite people to take ownership of whats going on. Ernie you talked about how important the voter is. Absolutely. Absolutely. If youre elected officials are not executing on this, vote them out. Lets get someone in that can assist in eradicating the gun problems. Ernie is there a solution . Its been going on a long time. The problem is it goes back to the whole elected official thing. We have a break body of legislators. If we dont put real people in there, well go down that slippery slope. Absolutely. One of the down sides, the mayor constantly states when we have these travesties, crime is down. However, what hes doing is minimizing the problems that are occurring in our community.
