Manny alvarez. This is a significant study. I think this is going to be a landmark study. This is over 145,000 pregnant women, very specifically study looking at autism and the effects that maybe the antidepressants have in regards to increasing the risk. What they found after they control the variables is there was a doubling of the rates of autism in women that took in the second and third trimester antidepressants. Suspects we use today. They took into control a lot of factors. We still think that autism has an arm in genetics and lifestyle. We know depression could increase or increase the risk of autism. With this, were looking at specifically at medicines. The ssris are serotonin uptakes. It works in the chemistry of the infant while in utero. In the second and third trimester, this is an important time because the brain is growing, so you might what could potentially happen is, according to the study, you have an arrest of the neurons making the connection. When the children are born, they dont have that full connection and they begin to demonstrate the signs of autism. Heres the skinny on this. 10 of all pregnant women are taking antidepressants. Its a huge population. The first message is if you need talk to your obgyn, your psychiatrist, about whether or not you can wean off the medication. I think thats a first conversation. Moving forward for women that are trying to get pregnant and are taking antidepressants, you should, before you get pregnant, have a conversation about the study and also whether or not you need to be on antidepressants before you get pregnant.
