His sister, who was 19, wanted to take custody of her brother, but the city wouldnt allow it because she wasnt 21. I didnt want to be placed in a group home. I didnt want to be given up for adoption. I didnt want to go to an rtc so i went awol. That consisted of anybody that offered a couch, a floor, anywhere, i would stay at. Reporter now 22, ivan has been out of the system for a few months. Hes a youth advocate at you got to believe nobody ages out youth collaborative. Today he was among 15 foster care children who shadowed city council members. The idea behind this, to raise awareness about how many challenges teen foster youth face. We have this platform where we can voice our stories and basically use our stories to bring up all these problems that members. One thing we need to do much better here in new york city is the permanency rate for youth aging out, making sure were connecting them with programs and with families that want to be those support services. How police say they tracked down what they call a rolling drug steve a new jersey parking lot looking like something out of breaking bad last night. Dari Lidia Curanaj is live in wayne, new jersey, where police discovered a mobile meth lab. Do tell. Reporter the Police Officers were simply doing their job. They were patrolling the parking lot, when they saw a guy sitting in his car with the dome light on. When Police Officers approached the vehicle, thats when they saw him mixing chemicals in the front seat to make meth. From all appearances, this red car looks like any other. Police say it could have easily turned into a bomb and killed numerous people. Wayne Police Captain lawrence martin. We had to get the Hazardous Materials team from the fire department, the first aid squad, a bomb squad because of the volatility, the dea come out with a lab squad. Reporter wayne Police Officers discovered a mobile meth lab inside a car parked at the ramada inn. The suspect was mixing caustic chemicals right there in the front seat of his car with the looking inside, they saw an individual pouring liquid from one bottle to another. That was unusual. Then they saw some white fumes come up from it. Reporter just some of the chemicals found, ammonia nitrate, lighter fluid, lye, lithium, and sued the potential for disaster was very, very high. Fortunately, it didnt happen. And the officers in their proactive approach to police work were able to jump on this, take him out and get it all settled. Nobody got hurt. On top of that, three people were busted for allegedly taking part in a multiMillion Dollar Prescription Drug scheme. Police say that a pharmacist, along with his wife and another person, illegally sold oxycontin out of a pair of pharmacies. Approximately 500,000 oxycontin pills were distributed over a fiveyear period with a street value of more than 15 million. The couple used some of the proceeds to buy a 2 million home in connecticut. Reporter the program is for young adults with intellectual disabilities. 80 percent of participants are on the autism spectrum, says the managing director tracey rand. Every young adult should have the opportunity to reach for their dream. And why should somebody be limited because of a disability . Reporter often options are limited for students like these. Having a program such as this is a lifesaver, both to the students as well as their family members. If you follow these back into reporter when we visited, they were learning about solar power with the help of mentors from the colleges science, technology, engineering and math program or stem. Better at math, social skills. We learned about job applications, taxes and budgets and all that stuff. Reporter turning point began in 2012 and is one of two dozen College Programs for students with intellectual disabilities funded by the u. S. Department of education. So far, about 65 students have completed the program, which costs 6,000 a year. And most have gone on to jobs which they wouldnt otherwise be prepared. This 22yearold will graduate this spring.
