Theyve been putting down the salt and sand and once the roads get slushy, they then put down those plow blades. But the issue has been this constant precipitation. It impacts how the crews can treat the roads. If theyre not scraping, theyre more than likely applying the salt. What we have to do is let the salt do its job. It doesnt start melting until the salt actually dissolves into the solution on the ground. Once that happens, after a particular time frame we come plows and push it off. Youll hear a similar response across the state as crews will be putting the blades out. Although some people were transported to area hospitals their injuries dont appear life threatening. Throughout the day, roads were barren as most people obeyed advice from officials to stay homement we caught up with one guy who took advantage of this wintery mess. Take a listen. Despite the messy roads, despite the cold temperatures, youre still getting your work out in, huh . Tell me about it. Just, you know, got to work out, cant stop cant let the weather stop me. Im preparing for the army. Now, although the freezing rain stopped, temperatures have dropped. Were seeing more salt trucks come through to treat the roads. Just another reminder from department of transportation, once theyre out trying to clear the roads, put the salt and is and down, theyre asking all drivers to please give them some room thats the latest, nate rogers, wncn news now. Now your wncn weather forecast. All right nate, thank you very much. Its friday night in central north carolina. One of our busiest interstates is a ghost town. Temperatures at 31 degrees. And while weve had a lull, some of us in the precipitation, you can see behind me its filling back in with rain south of the triangle. Freezing rain, sleet, and snow from the triangle on north. Yet another batch is getting ready to move through over the next couple hours. And i tell you what, i know its been a long day of kind of but weve got another night and day of this before we can start to even think about driving somewhere without ending up in the ditch. Now, it hasnt been the biggest snow storm weve ever had. It hasnt been the biggest ice storm either. But its been a little bit of both. And its been gnarly on the roads. Look at some of the totals, sleet and snow. Over 3 inches in pierson county. Thats in bethel hill and roxboro. In warren county, you got three inches. Orange county, evelyn, two inches there. Carrie, an inch and a half. Not huge snow totals. Theres been sleet mixing in. Pile up. Sleet is not. Its very compact. Thats why some totals have been lower. Because we have more sleet. Cold. Triangle. 31 in raleigh. Above freezing south of the triangle. Which is why it was rain showing up. But one of my concerns tonight, not only as the frozen and your tree, your power line in your backyard might have a little bit of ice on it. And it might be able to hold. But as these winds continue to go to work on that tree or power line, and even pick up, thats when they could come down. And plus, if you have to walk outside for anything, look at our windchills, 11 degrees in roxboro and sylar city. Its not going to warm up much in the next several hours. Temperatures will hold. Including those and windchills. The frozen precipitation will stay frozen. But then as we get passed midnight, a lull again in the precipitation. But winds turn back out of the north, temperatures drop. And then more precipitation as we get into saturday morning and that would be snow. Not a lot. But there is more to come. Both frozen and snow precipitation. So heres what the weather map looks like right now as we go forward, you see rain mainly east and south. By that wintery mix of freezing rain and sleet continues for a early in the morning, as the low speeds by up the coast, a little bit of a lull. But then on the backside as colder air moves in. 20s. Look what else drops back in. More snow. Its not expected to be heavy. It could be 1 to 3 inches by lunch time that snow retreats a little to the north and stays by the virginia border. Even through the afternoon. But as we get into the evening tomorrow, this snow and clouds move out. And weve got sunshine on sunday. We do not have that tomorrow. Itll be a cloudy and a cold day. Winds will continue. More Power Outages will be possible. As a wintery mix continues over night and snow tomorrow morning and early afternoon. We start to see improvements on sunday. But i dont think itll be until the afternoon until roads will improve. 48 monday and were in the 50s on tuesday. With a cold front tuesday and wednesday. That will bring us rain. And nothing more. But itll be chilly by the end of course the entire wncn weather team has been here all day keeping an eye on this storm, including bill ray. Hes now outside to talk more about whats going on with the trees and maybe some of that ice thats under your feet. Bill . Thats right, wes, as a matter of fact, i have my temperature out here. Were at 31. 5 degrees right outside the studio. Winds peeked at 14. 5. So the windchills a factor. And also whats happened today. Let me grab this. This tree branch looks pretty impressive. Look at the ice on there. Look at that. Thats about 1 4 of an inch almost. 1 8 of an inch. Whats going to happen, if we get more of that over night like is forecasted, this will get heavier and heavier. It could snap and fall. You see the tree behind me, i dont think that tree is going to fall but trees could fall. Power lines could fall. We have to be careful with that. The other thing is, even though its below freezing here, its slushy on the ground. But this is ice on top. When we get cold tonight, this when the snow falls, you wont see this, i think one of the most Dangerous Things to do guys is just when youre stepping outside, your front stoop, or your front porch, thats an accident waiting to happen. Please be careful. Things arent going to get better any time soon. Sean . Thank you for that. Exciting snow vide welcome back. Snow starting falling in roanoke virginia around 3 00 this morning. This is time lapse video showing a portion of the accumulation. The areas specking 18 to 24 inches of snow there. Meanwhile, as most people werehuddled up inside today, we found someone who used a creative way to brave the elements. Wncns emma wright shot this video of a moped in raleigh. As you can see, they were not phased by the cold temperatures. I would be heres a final look at the radar that continues to have rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow, and while some of you may have had a lull there for a bit. We expect it to pick back up for another couple hours tonight. Another break over night. But then some snow on top of all of this ice tomorrow morning and early afternoon. Itll be another cold and windy day. Sunshine and 40 thank goodness on sunday. Guys . All right. Thank you.
