Theres new information this morning about a halloween crash that killed three people, including a 10yearold girl. Turns out one of the men who also died in that tragic accident is this morning being credited with saving his granddaughters life. Checke Checkey Beckford joins us live from the bronx. Reporter what a heartbreaking tragedy to lose not only a daughter but a grandfather in all of this. This morning we spoke to the mother of that 10yearold girl killed. She says she could have lost another child had it not been for the grandfather who pushed that other granddaughter out of the way to safety. But sadly, lewis perez, seen here, and 10yearold niyana were both killed. Another picture shows her with her mother, wearing the costume she had on last night. Grandfather and two sisters, were trickortreating on morris park avenue around 5 00 p. M. When police say a car jumped the curb and slammed into them. Another pedestrian, 24yearold christian laka, was also killed. Perez says her dad, a vietnam vet, awarded the purple heart for his service, lived for his granddaughters, taking them to and from school, making sure they were well cared for. A school aid at ps83 sobbed as she described the loving family. What a beautiful little girl. And the grandfather, what a devoted grandfather. He was he watched those girls while the mom went to work. He i cant even describe what a nice man he always, thank you for taking care of my granddaughters. Reporter just about an hour ago, this is video, by the way, of car being removed just about an hour ago. It remained lodged on top of a brick fence overnight. Police believe it struck another car before jumping the curb and going airborne into that crowd. Back out here live, the girls mother says her 3yearold has a nonlife threatening neck injury while the other girl, thanks to her grandfather, was not hurt in all of this. Police say theyre still investigating this tragic accident. Thank you. Beautiful family in mourning up there tonight. New this morning, were following two halloween night shootings. The first was on 144th avenue in the rosedale area of queens. A 19yearold and another man were shot. The 19yearold died. In williamsburg, a fight led to a shooting on south 3rd street. Two men shot there. In stable condition. At this point, no arrests have been made in either of these also new this morning, a far rockaway couple facing charges, accused of beating up a clerk while trickortreating with children. Investigators say they started stealing cookies from a deli in inwood after they got into the argument with a clerk over what the clerk was giving out as a halloween treat. When the clerk tried to make them leave, they started punching him. They were eventually arrested and charged with robbery and child endangerment. A rutgers student is now behind bars this morning. Hes accused of stabbing two people in a dorm. Police say 18yearold Daniel Landry got into a fight and attacked the victims friday night. They were rushed to the hospital and are expected to survive. He is now facing several charges, including attempted murder. Right now were waiting for details about a deadly shootout at Winston Salem State University in north carolina. Two students were shot on campus early this morning. One student is dead and the other is in the hospital. The campus was put on lockdown while police searched for the gunman. The gunman has still not been found. Investigators in colorado still piecing together the mote i have behind a shooting spree on the streets of a quiet neighborhood there. A man shot and killed three people in Colorado Springs before he was shot to death in a gun battle with police. Several other people were wounded, but no word on their conditions yet this morning. The gunmans name hasnt been released. This morning, russian investigators are expected to join the investigation into the crash of a Russian Airliner in egypt. It crashed 23 minutes after taking off from a tourist resort yesterday. Russias transport minister is disputing claims an islamist Extremist Group shot down the plane. 224 people were killed, including 25 children. In somalia, Security Forces say a militant group that held hostages inside a hotel, members of that group have been killed. Whether rubio gets momentum now in the polls, i think, is a bit premature. But what the debate may have clarified is his ability to attract some of the big donors that jeb bush is trying to attract. Theyre both competing for the same group of supporters on that front. Thats what i think were watching in the next couple weeks. This is why the jeb bush and what is the Bush Campaign saying to supporters as we look toward the primaries . Well, look, youll see in the sitdown i have with him, hes trying to send the message of, a, he gets it, he knows his campaign hasnt gone as well as hed hoped. Hes doing a big reset tomorrow, gus. Hes essentially reannouncing. He talks a lot about a speech he wants to give tomorrow. Theyve got a new slogan called jeb can fix it. Its about trying to position him as the Problem Solver of the field. Obviously that slogan is being used by a lot of reporters to ask if the it is about the country or his own campaign. In the interview i had with him, to clean up the sort of operations of the house and pull back on some big issues for a while.
