An suv crashed through the front of a barber shop. Checkey beckford joins us from the scene with reaction. Reporter rolling over shattered glass and mangled metal, the suv was pulled from the prestige barber shop. The business not much wider than the vehicle that barrelled into it some four hours earlier. I was like, oh, my gosh, everyone inside. Reporter thats all he could think as he saw the suv go towards the business with no signs of stopping. Said everyone move. I cant stop the car. Reporter the car appeared to be out of control. The barber himself told me the car wasnt going quickly. There was nothing of the sort. It just, it seemed like the car wouldnt stop. Reporter this man who works down the way stepped outside to make a makeshift triage in the parking lot. I see the barbers, you know, one of them seemed to get a little bit hurt. Reporter despite the scene, police say only three people suffered very minor injuries including this man returning to the barbershop in a neck brace to collect his belongings. You could see the front has been bordered up and covered up with blue tarp. Nearly all of it was destroyed when the car went through it. Police say the driver is not expected to face any charges in relation to this accident and it is under investigation right now at this point. If the vehicle did, in fact, malfunction. Today in new york. Police searching for a suspect in an overnight slashing police say the driver had asked the suspect for money for the fare. Thats when the suspect tried to rob the driver. When the driver refused to give up the cash, he was slashed in the neck and back. He was taken to the hospital to be treated. Police need your help this morning to find the man behind eight Bank Robberies back to november last year. In each case the suspect handed the teller a threatening note and took off with cash. Look at these videos. If you recognize this person, police are asking you to call them. And in a separate case, weve got new surveillance video. Police shows that police gave us. And it shows a different suspect breaking into a bank near 5th avenue. You see him pry open the glass to break in. Another shows him jumping over the counter there. He made off with an undetermined foot. In decision 2016 with new yorks primary just days away, democratic candidate Bernie Sanders returns from the vatican where he confirmed he did, in fact, meet with the pope. At least 1500 people are recovering from injuries sustained when two earthquakes shook japan. After fires and buildings collapsed. One quake hit saturday in the city of kumamoto which is the same place where another quake hit. Officials say at least 25 people and the largest volcano in japan has erupted in the wake of the earthquakes. Theres no word if there is a link, but dramatic images coming to us there. Reporter in the south bronx in the 40th precinct theres with unsolved killings like this and two shootings where Police Officers themselves were the target. Overall, yes, shootings are down, but residents are seeing a big jump in other major crimes. Assaults, robberies all right, boys and girls. Were up again this thursday. Reporter inspector carl valdez is now in charge. In recent months, he tried to reverse these trends. Were up 23 in robberies, 400 in burglaries. Reporter now he and his team are about to get called to Police Headquarters for compstat to respond. I think a lot of why were doing this is because of the increases this year and last year. Somebody just got shot. I heard four shots. Reporter an afternoon murder we have video of not the actually homicide but people fleeing. We think maybe the shooting victim from last year was the intended target . Reporter every major crime, every trend, this team reviews cases. But this week theyre calling for answers. 53 total robbery arrests last year. But we also have an increase in arrests for crimes. Thats something we have to get out. This is my book. It reporter after the meeting, the inspector shows us his case book. A hundred cases to stay on top of this month alone. Analyzing the data, pinpointing the problem. Reporter the precinct commander in the end responsible for it all. Patrol, housing, detectives, narcotics, warrants. And in the end he will answer to those gathering here at Police Headquarters. And this week are analyzing crime trends in the bronx. Problems they see. They want solutions. The chief of department himself picking through some individual cases including shootings. The security of homeless shelters in the city is now under scrutiny this morning after a handicap man was found dead in his bed at the bellevue mens shelter. It was a story we brought you first on 4. Michael george reports. Reporter residents at this shelter are all wondering what happened. A 56yearold homeless man murdered and police still looking for the killer. I think they got no security. I dont know what the problem was with that though. They got lots of security. Reporter this man knows the man that was murdered. He says he doesnt feel safe at the shelter. I sleep with one eye open. Reporter police say workers found the 56yearold resident dead in his bed with a cut to his neck. Residents told us the victim was handicapped. Detectives think he may have someone inside his room. The room appeared to be in disarray as if a struggle ensued. Ems responded and pronounced the male deceased on scene. Reporter this is the third felony at this city shelter this year alone. In response to several violent instances, the Administration Commissioner says theyre upgrading security here and other shelters. And the Police Department departments conducting with you of the security and safety needs of the shelter system.
