>> it's a rainy wednesday morning. >> it is. welcome to the 9 o'clock show on good morning maryland. let's speak with wood wood and brad paisley. >> a pretty big deal. talking about the c-ma's? >> yes she and brad will be hosting the c-ma's right here and i have to say, i had to tell her i'm not a stalker even though i have seen herself have been times with keith urban so she thinks i'm stalking him instead. >> that's probably true. how many times have you seen him? >> a lot. what else is coming up? >> it is veterans day, we're obviously so grateful for all of the veterans in the country past and present so we'll talk about that and talk about programs about readjusting to life after war which is what so many go through. it's amazing. >> also miracle ties. >> every year johns hopkins come out with ties made by the children. they create the designs. >> they're incredible. it's an amazing program, a great way to help hopkins children's ' center. we have some artists that then model their ties and they were kind enough to give us some of these so we'll tell you about it. >> right now, in for justin. how are you doing? >> i'm doing great over here and i love the ties, too. plenty of length. that's hard to fine sometimes. the weather it's definitely a damp wet deery scenario and it doesn't look like it will improve much so for the parades and activities it will be damp. dress for that if you have the day off. expect a rainy scenario through the day. temperatures won't change much. we may warm up maybe 2 or 3 degrees towards midday and that will be about it. other than that whoever around 50 really the next few days and also the winds picking up in a big way today and this evening. this coastal storm system really beginning to get its act together. we'll break it down for you and tell you how it affects the weather the rest of the weekend, even into the weekend. all that coming up in a few minutes. >> east baltimore, there's been apian police-involved shooting. >> we have been following this what can you tell us this morning? >> it happened before 6:30. police got a call for a domestic dispute in the 2400 block of jeff son street. it was apparently between a mother and her 23 years old son. when officers arrived police say the son approach the cop with two knife-like objects. the subject was told to drop the weapons multiple times and he did not. that's when the officer fired one shot hitting the subject in the chest. he was taken to hopkins and last check he was in critical condition. police say they responded earlier in the night. at 1:00 o'clock this morning they got a call for a family disturbance. the suspect was apparently drunk. again police say a 23 years old man was shot by an officer after he apparently lunged at cops with what appears to be a knife. we'll follow the story and bring you developments at 5 and 6 and as always you can check online at abc 2 news. live in southeast baltimore, abc 2 news. >> we'll continue to follow the story and update it at 5 and also you can follow the story at abc 2 news .com. >> well it's the day to honor veterans who put their lives on the line to protect and serve anbeing and the front lines is very tough. at times you see on the battlefield the things you see stay with you a long time. some veterans say it's a bigger battle when they get home. when you're in the military going home to your family is a big deal. it's something robert lake always looked forward to but it didn't take long for this army captain and his family to notice, something wasn't right. >> we were on egg shells, afraid to say things. >> one moment he would be really happy and then the next he wasn't. >> reporter: she said adjusting was tough on everyone. at first they didn't know what was wrong. turns out he had post traumatic stress disorder or ptsd. lake served in desert storm and operation iraqi freedom. when overseas he said he saw things that really took a toll on his mental health and when he was home he had a hard time letting his guard down with strangers, going outside, to the movies, riding a bus, it caused a lot of anxiety. >> captain lake has been getting treatment at the va and says it's helped tremendously. he wants to share his story to help others going through the same thing. he said half of the battle is realizing you need help. >> if you don't get that support you can't really blame anybody. >> sherry swan was also being treated. >> i went to search him and when i went to search him i put him on the front of the vehicle so i could search him and he turned around and he punched me in the side of the head. >> reporter: from that point on she said she lived in fear. >> someone would walk up behind me and it would scare me and i'd scream so bad. >> reporter: she started to abuse drugs and alcohol. she had to walk away from her marriage and daughter. >> i became homeless. i was -- there's three ways to go when you're involved in any type of addiction. ininstitutions (inaudible) i started drinking and driving and i was arrested. >> after several years she win to the va for help. >> in fact i had a mental illness which is really something i never wanted to believe i had. nobody wants to believe they have a mental illness but it will take your life if you let it. >> reporter: both are trying to get their life back. it's been tough but a battle worth fighting. >> thanks so much for joining us. what do you see when they come back? >> we have about 8000 veterans we have in the health care system and a number of them, probably about a third we see what they are having, some struggles with reintegrating back into january life. >> what do you mean by that, the struggles. >> they're having difficult leaving some of the things that happened to them in combat behind. they have not quite processed that completely so it's still with them on a daily basis. some of them are very jumpy, some are having flashbacks, some are having you know terrifying nightmares about their experiences. >> and are they troubled because they can't shake this. >> yes they want to move past. this. they're looking to places like the va and the vet centers for help in recovery and the reintegration back into the family and back into the january lives. >> we're talking about, they came back you know your grandfathers and fathers won talk. was that their way of handling that stress. >> for a lot of veterans particularly the world war ii generation, not talking about it was a way of dealing with it. not an appropriate way of dealing with it i would add so that's one of the things we're trying to encourage the veterans of today to get out and start talking about their experience. >> like a vet from afghanistan, i have no problem, i'm going with it. you're saying get somebody to look at you. >> i'm just saying when you come back look at your gear and the vehicles and make sure everything is operating properly just like you do that i'm asking the soldiers and veterans and themselves and make sure they're working properly and ask the friends and family around them if they have noticed changes and if they have to come in and get looked at for those things. >> one thing out there you should be looking for, one thing that triggers this? >> i think we're looking that we have noticed something in the veterans that they're not the same as they were when they win off to war and they're not as happy as they once were. >> when you get there, there's also a hot line you want to talk about. >> for any of the veterans out there who might be feeling like they want to harm themselves, that they're having suicidal thoughts we want them to call. there's a 24-7 hot line, 800- 273-talk. and they can talk to a live person about wh's going on with them and get the help they need. >> keep that up there for a moment because we also have the web sight up and this is, we have to pay for this. right? who picks up the bill to get some help? >> well, for the va of course the budget comes out of congress every year so you know we have the budget to take care of our veterans. one of the things that the legislation that's been passed is that the veterans coming back from combat for the first five years will have to, won't have to pay for care related to the combat service so we don't want cost to be a reason why a veteran would not seek care for any issue. >> thanks so much for the service. and what you're doing right now. again let's put it back up. also the web sight maryland va.gov thanks very much. >> thanks. >> we all know the johns hopkins children's center helps hundreds of children a year but how the children are helping the hospital. if you have not heard about it the miracle tie program happens every year, incredible fundraiser to benefit the johns hopkins fundraiser. thanks for coming in. >> thank you. >> tell us about these quickly. >> they're fabulous, aren't they? i right now have on x-mas trees, the christmas trees by savannah. we have kids involved in creating from delete s delete s best of their imagination that helps represent them and best represents the hospital so we have a lot of great designs which will have some of the models show us today. >> let's have the first one out. >> there she is. what's on that tie (inaudible). >> where did you come up with that city. >> when i went crabbing with my grandfather. >> special memory. >> yes. >> is it neat to see your creation on a tie that will be sold to help the hospital. >> i'd also like to dedicate this tie to robbie who is my friend who is having a hard time right now in the hospital. >> that is really sweet. is he watching right now. >> probably. >> all right. that's a gorgeous tie. thanks for sharing with us. will you stay here? >> yes. >> who is coming out next. >> hey, you look very handsome. i have got for come over here and talk to you. tomorrow as, tell me a little bit about your tie. let's see it >> why santa? >> because it was winter and -- (inaudible). >> it is gorgeous. what do you think when you see your creation on the tie. >> that santa is coming. >> will he bring you something. >> yes. >> cayla. come on over. we're having a little bit of a party. tell me about this tie. >> it's tulips on it. >> why that? >> because i like tulips and see them in the spring. >> are you proud when you see this, something you thought of. what do you think about that. >> i feel very proud. >> you feel really proud. >> yes. >> they look wonderful. tell me about how this benefits the hospital. >> in lots of great ways. the kids put a lot of effort into putting the designs out their and then they're doing a great job of making the kids ' drawings into the beautiful ties that people can wear around the holidays or every day we think there are lots of safari designs and all kinds of things and if you go to the joseph a banks store, local or the web sight you can buy these that benefit johns hopkins septemberer. >> i think one thing that's so cool about all three ties and you for example, this has a special meeting to you with your grandpa that everybody here loves the crab. >> yes. >> that's such a neat idea. same with the flowers and the santa. you guys did such a wonderful job. let's get all of the information on the screen and let people know how to get involved quickly. we popped it up for a second. that's where you get the ties and there's the web sight and is there any specific way if somebody wanted to help out the center, beyond the ties how can they do that? >> yes, you can actually just call our johns hopkins children's center and get in touch with the development or public affairs office and we could probably find out other ways. >> what did your mom say about the tie? >> she said she loved it. >> what about you, what did your parents say. >> they like it. >> they like it? >> yes. >> who is that, does he have a name? >> (inaudible). >> what about your parents, what did your grandpa say when you showed him that tie. >> he was very excited. >> is he watching right now. >> yes. >> listen if you missed the segment and want more information we'll put it on the web sight abc 2 news .com. thanks for coming in. >> it's wednesday so it's time to learn the abc tunes of weather. >> these kids we'll check with them and get education in the weather department. before we go to break if you have a business or charity and would like a brief shout out on the air we'd love to give you attention. send to: hi. hey, i need a new cell phone. well, right now you can get verizon wireless plus fios tv, internet and phone. wow. that really is beautiful, isn't it?
