david gray helping us to kick off your weekend. fine way to do it. first we want to get to you breaking fews out of arizona. a dangerous escaped convict and his fiancee are behind bars after a three-week manhunt. john mccluskey and casslyn welch, also his cousin, were arrested last night at a national forest campsite in apache, arizona. we're outside the county jail this morning in st. john's, arizona, with the latest for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, erica. as we learned more details about this arrest, it is very clear it could have easily gone the other way. both fugitives had guns on them or close by. from their own words, they had every plan to use them. >> the nightmare that started on july 30th is finally over. >> reporter: after 2 1 days on the run, america's most wanted fugitives are finally behind bars. escaped inmate john mccluskey and his fiancee, who was also his cousin, casslyn welch, were captured around 7:30 local time wednesday. a s.w.a.t. team was there. although there were no shots fired, u.s. marshal david gonzalez said mccluskey had different plans. >> if he had gotten back to the tent, there was a gun there and that he would have killed the officers involved. >> reporter: the two were captured after an alert park ranger noticed their stolen vehicle parked up against some trees at their campsite and had a conversation with mccluskey where he said the fugitive was very nervous. >> he should have killed the park -- skies me, the forest ranger when he had an opportunity to. >> reporter: a nationwide manhunt had been under way for mccluskey and fellow fugitive tracy province since they escaped from an arizona prison on july 30th with the help of welch who threw a pair of wire cutters over the fence. the two were linked to the august 6th deaths of an elderly oklahoma couple whose bodies were found badly burned in santa rosa, new mexico. province was captured three days later. the couple who referred to themselves as bonnie and clyde, had been on the run ever since with their last sighting almost two weeks ago in northern montana and over 700 leads from all over the country, authorities feared the worst. >> the trail had gone absolutely cold. >> reporter: this morning, exactly three weeks after the initial escape, the two are behind bars. well, both mccluskey and welch are suspects in those murders in new mexico, as we mentioned, but they have not been indicted in those crimes. that process could take a while, along with the extradition. their freedom no longer their own. their movements closely watched by prison guards. erica? >> pat mcreynolds in st. john's, arizona, thanks. richard guinn was at the scene when mccluskey and welch were captured, along with apache county sheriff joseph dedman. sergeant, do you have any idea -- from what i understand they were fairly familiar with some of these areas. folks knew perhaps they could be in campgrounds. any idea how long they were at this location? >> at this time we haven't determined how long they were in our area. we are still obviously investigating their appearance here. >> your officers, your teams there, reacted pretty quickly. they run this license plate, comes up as a car stolen from santa rosa, new mexico, where the bodies of this elderly, from santa rosa as well, were burned. how quickly did it take from running that plate to actually knowing that you had your man and woman? >> we received the initial notification at about 4:30. approximately ten minute after 7:00 with we had them in custody is when we made the official identification. >> everything happened pretty quickly. as we heard from pat, there were firearms at the campsite. was there ever a point with when your officers, your team there, were concerned for their own safety, for their lives? >> when our team went in, mr. mccluskey had attempted to turn and run. he was knocked to the ground immediately and taken into custody. welch was attempting to draw a handgun on our officers. she ultimately followed their instruction and placed the weapon on the hood of the car where she was taken to the ground and secured. >> sheriff, there was also, as i understand it, a third party with this couple. what do we know about that person? >> well, he was an innocent bystander, just camping by next to this couple that were there at the campsite. so, he was detained briefly and released. >> and so, it doesn't seem he may have helped them in any way? >> not at this time, no. >> sergeant, when they were taken into custody, is there anything they said that you can share with us? were they upset at all? what was their demeanor? >> their demeanor was pretty much one of almost resignation, i would say. mccluskey did, when he was questioned as to who he was, did make a spontaneous statement to the effect of, you know who i am. i'm the one you've been looking for. >> sergeant richard guinn and joseph dedman, appreciate you being with us this morning. >> thank you. now here's harry. now, a look at the road ahead in afghanistan where u.s. forces are building up just as the combat mission in iraq is coming to an end. at least 18 u.s. troops have died in afghanistan this month, including one who died yesterday in an explosion. "cbs evening news" anchor katie couric is reporting this week from afghanistan where she sat down with u.s. commander general david petraeus. katie is with us now from kabul this morning. katie, good morning. >> reporter: harry, good morning to you. with nearly the full complement of 100,000 troops here in afghanistan along with 40,000 coalition troops, the top u.s. commander here, general david petraeus, who, of course, led the american effort in iraq, is hoping to convince an increasingly skeptical american public that progress is, in fact, being made. while he acknowledges that public support has declined and eroding, americans are very frustrated, he also warns about what would happen if a military vacuum were created here. >> if the coalition forces went away precipitously, which i think is very, very unlikely, given our interest here and given the determination of all involved here to help afghanistan, achieve our common objectives, but obviously there are different forces here that would be unleashed. those forces would collide. there could be -- certainly would be regional involvement and so forth. not a particularly pretty picture, i don't think. >> and, harry, you know, general petraeus and i talked a lot about something that may be anathama to the american people. expert are saying an ultimate solution to this war will undoubtedly involve negotiating with the taliban along with al qaeda. the enemy troops that u.s. troops have been trying to crush. now, many are worried that this will really have a chilling effect on the strides women and girls have made here in afghanistan since the invasion and the fall of the taliban pip asked general petraeus about that. >> reporter: hillary clinton recently said, any deal with the taliban that traded peace for women is a red line. will women's rights be gambled away to get the taliban in the tent? >> well, given what you just quoted, obviously, that's not the case. again, she's been very clear about that. the united states has been very clear. and the afghan government has been very clear. >> reporter: tonight we'll have more on the prospect of negotiating with the taliban, what that would entail with general petraeus, as well as more on the plight of girls and women here and their fears about the future. harry? >> katie, during the evening news last night we saw you going with general petraeus to coasts in the eastern part of afghanistan. what was that like? >> reporter: well, harry, it was rce, the eastern term of eastern afghanistan is a particularly difficult hot spot for u.s. and coalition forces. that's because of its treacherous terrain. it's unpredictable weather and most of all, it's proximity to pakistan. we were just about 20 miles from the pakistani border, north waziristan over the border where a terrorist network -- and pakistan has tried to rein them in, according to general petraeus, but they continue to cross the border, plant ieds, train local fighters and travel south for even bigger battles. it is a very tough area. general petraeus and some commanders say they are making progress there, but it was interesting to see it firsthand. >> katie, stay safe and we'll look forward to your reports tonight on the "cbs evening news." afghanistan, the road ahead, on the evening fuse here tonight on cbs. erica? >> thanks. this morning government health officials say a salmonella outbreak is likely to keep breaking. a single company, wright county egg in iowa, has recalled now 380 million eggs that have been linked to salmonella cases in four states. minnesota, colorado, california and now alaska. investigations are also going on in 12 other states. so, we want to get the latest information about the egg recall. our dr. jennifer ashton is here this morning. that sound like a huge number of eggs. >> right. >> how many people are going to be affected by this if. >> let's put it in context few marekly. when you talk about salmonella cases in this country every year, there are 40,000 cases reported each year. there are estimated to be well over 1 million cases of salmonella cases every year that go underdiagnosed, undiagnosed and not reported. we have to put this into context. to break down the information again, this recall deals with eggs out of wright county farms in iowa. as you said, 380 million eggs recalled. about 2,000 cases diagnosed to date. again, it's important to remember about 700 of those may be the baseline existing cases of salmonella we already see. they have raded two plant numbers in the recall. it's plant numbers 1026, 1413, 1946, 1720 and 1942. erica, you can see those right at the end of an egg carton. this is not a carton that's recalled but it starts with "p," and then i four-digit number -- >> that's underneath the date you would find on your carton. >> exactly. that's how you know whether or not your eggs have been feked. how do you reduce your risk, though. >> this feeds repeating. first thing when talking about eggs you want to avoid consuming raw or undercooked eggs. that's key. don't cook with eggs sitting out for more than two hours. always wash your hands. if in doubt, throw it out. if you don't know where your carton came from, get rid of it. >> jen, thanks. want to get you a closer look at some other headlines on this friday morning. jeff glor is at the news desk. >> good morning to you. there is breaking news this morning about the middle east peace talks broken off nearly two years ago. cbs news chief white house correspondent chip reid is traveling with president obama this morning in martha's vineyard. chip, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jeff. there are reports this morning the obama administration has convinced israel and the palestinians to return to the bargaining table for direct negotiations. according to "the new york times," secretary of state hillary rodham clinton will announce later today the talks will begin later next month in washington. netanyahu and mahmoud abbas are expected to attend. no comment from the white house this morning but president obama, vacationing here in martha's vineyard, is expected to attend those talks. >> chief white house correspondent, chip reid, thank you. clemens was charged with lying to congress on thursday. in 2008 the former pitcher and seven-time cy young award winner testified he never used steroids and human growth hormone. his lawyer was repeating that yesterday. >> roger did not use steroids, did not use hgh or didn't like to congress about it. >> clemens faces charges of obstruction of congress, making false statements and perjury. he faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. american airlines may be hit with with a record fine for faulty maintenance. today's wall street journal says the proposed $25 million fine is the largest faa penalty ever against a u.s. airline. it's for improper electrical wiring around landing gear that could have led to fires and fuel tank explosions. american airlines was forced to ground 300 planes in april 008 while that problem was fixed. a security scare kept an american airlines flight on the ground in san francisco yesterday. the new york-bound jet was moved to an isolated area on the tarmac after a telephoned hijacking threat. two passengers were taken away in handcuffs but later released. the fbi and tsa decided the threat was not credible. in texas a police chase turned into a runway excursion. te crashed through a locked gate at the airport in dallas, started driving across runways. flights had to be halts while the chase went on. a patrol car eventually got him. he may be link to a string of crimes. he's been arrested now. 15 minutes past the hour. dave price is off this morning so lonnie quinn is here make it a great day wherever you are. harry, erica, over to you. >> thanks. still ahead this morning -- is it an accident or a crime when a girl falls 100 feet and nearly dies? >> such an interesting story. because you think you are in the absolute privacy of this group of, what, several dozen friends, right? >> yeah. it was about 50 friends and family members, yeah. >> and if you viewed the things that you said in context -- >> right. >> -- they're far less incendiary, from my perspective. >> thank you. i appreciate that. >> for instance, you're talking about the kids being germ bags. you've gotten sick how many times that school year? >> i was sick most of the school year. i even ended the school year with pneumonia. >> you had been on repeated med kags and everything else, so in this particular case you're referring to the students as -- >> germ bags, but, you know, it was a joke. >> right. my gosh. so, and then you go on to say, now i remember why i stopped teaching. because they are, it's lie kennel cough, everybody is sick at one time or another. other comments you made were about the parents. that was something about a conflict going on in the school, right? >> right. actually, the school district has been going through a lot of turmoil and there's been a lot of conflict between the teachers union and the administration and school committee and the community in general. >> right. and so then that ends up being -- had you any idea that any of the things you were saying could have been viewed by anyone else other than the people that you thought were your friends on facebook? >> no. i had my privacy settings set. and i know that that is the case because of a conversation that my students had about, gee, dr. siple has a facebook page and another student said, no, you can't, it's blocked out. facebook made changes to their privacy setting. it aurnz out, when they made that, they default things to being open. you are to opt out of that. >> yeah. so every time it changes, even though -- and how would you know on a day-to-day basis unless you're really paying attention? >> you had to really be paying attention. i was working 12, 14 hours a day, very, very busy. you know, even if an e-mail or go like that did come across, i didn't see it. if it had been on facebook -- i actually don't use facebook that much. >> probably be using it a lot less in the future. >> probably. >> just very quickly. your message to other people is using facebook, i think, you are certainly caught in a very sort of innocent communication with friends, cost you your livelihood. what's your message?
