>> when the rains began at like 1:30 or 2:00 a.m., it was the hardest rain i'd ever seen. and we had campers right on the banks of the river. and i knew that they were probably in danger, so i made them aware that they needed to relocate. and they got out -- or one of them didn't make it out with the vehicle, but the river was rising at a rate of three feet in 15 minutes. and the rain didn't stop for four hours. >> as far as what you saw and what you witnessed, what did you see? aside from the floodwaters rising, what was going on around you as far as the other vacationers and campers there? >> there was a mass evacuation on the park. i actually live in a park on the cado river, not at the albert pike location on the little missouri. and the river situation was very similar there. it rose to 22 feet in just a matter of four hours. >> your wife, i know she has some health problem, so she was a primary concern. but you also recognized that there were some kids that were in some serious peril. how did you know what to do first, whether to take care of your wife, get the kids to safer ground? you acted very quickly. >> well, i knew that my wife was fine. she was fast asleep. the rain didn't wake her up. and i knew that there were children in the camper and he was having problems getting connected with the rain and everything. so so i saw that the water was rising very, very fast, so i helped get the children from the camper and get them to higher ground. >> when you look around and you see not only the death toll, but the devastation, can you believe what has happened to this area that you called your home? >> it's still unbelievable. i was fortunate, of all the people in the park, my rv was the only one that wasn't under water. it came within 1 1/2 inches of the floor of my rv. and stopped miraculously. >> well, the people are lucky to have you there. >> my wife was -- she's a person of deep spiritual beliefs, and she said, well, what can we do. and i told her, i said, well, there's only one thing you can do and that's probably to pray. and she prayed for some times and asked god to protect our op home. and this was in a lot of seeing buses and campers going down the river. and we set up on the roadway above the park and watched the waters come up and start up on our rv. and it stopped an inch and a half from the floor level. >> you're lucky then. and we thank you for taking the time and sharing your story with us. you stay safe and best to your wife. >> thank you. there is breaking news this morning. just a short time ago, a rescue ship reached 16-year-old sailor abby sunderland. bill whitaker is live this morning in thousand oaks, california with the latest for us. talk about some good news to start the day. >> reporter: good morning. yes, the sunderland family's prayers have been answered. just a short while ago, the family came out and told us that, indeed, 16 qu-year-old ab has been picked up by a french fishing vessel. they said they spoke to her briefly. she's in good spirits, in good health and on her way home. when 16-year-old abby sunderland was found adrift in the frigid indian ocean alive, it was some of the best news her family could hear until today when they heard she'd been rescued. a french fishing boat became her lifeboat. >> she got out of the vessel with the clothes on her back and we're just really ecstatic and excited that abby is in safe hands. >> reporter: the family has been on an emotional roller coaster. the low, thursday when all contact was lost. the high when an australian search plane spotted her in the water and made radio contact. her mast had broken in heavy sea, but abby was unharmed. >> she'll always be a sailor. she's passionate about the ocean. she's fallen on hard luck. >> reporter: before setting sale, abby said she knew becoming the youngest person to sail solo around the world would be difficult. >> the things that are most worth doing take a little effort. >> reporter: despite criticism, her parents don't regge regret g her go. the area where she was rescued is one of the most remote in the world. so it still could be two weeks before abby is finally reunited with her family. erica? >> but still good news this morning. bill whitaker, thanks. and we will speak live with abby sunderland's parents as well as her brother in our next half hour. we want to turn now to the disaster in the gulf. we have for you that live feed of the oil gushing from the blownout well. new government estimates are actually putting the amount of the oil spill so far at double what was previously thought. president obama is how planning his fourth trip to the gulf for monday. he'll meet with bp executives. meantime that oil continuing to come ashore. don teague is in grand isle, louisiana for us this morning. don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, erica. we've been watching as more of that thick, sticky oil pours through the passes here around grand isle. we've also been out on the water watching the massive effort to try to stop it. high tide brought a pitched battle near grand isle. more than a dozen boats booming and skimming, trying to keep thick ribbons of oil out of an important bay. they got some of it. but too much got through. the response to this still growing oil spill is now the largest in history. >> about 25,000 are on the ground down there. 21,000 contractors and 700 volunteers. >> reporter: still the environmental and economic damage in louisiana is worsening. the last fresh oysters harvested from these waters cleared out of this warehouse on thursday. in new orleans, oyster supply business is closed after 124 years in business. >> i was hoping this day would never come. and it's come. >> reporter: senators from four states toured the embattled coastline seeing the oil and its impact up close. the mayor of grand isle told the delegation he wants federal agencies to waive regulations that are halting his efforts to block critical bays with barges. >> i'm not going to wait on another agency and say we have to study this. we're going to get out there and do our job. >> reporter: this oil really isn't like motor oil. it's hard to describe how sticky this stuff is. this is just from dipping this gloved hand into the water a few times. and this oil just doesn't come off until you take seasoap to i. and this is what is coating the marshes. >> don, thanks. we know we're getting a picture from the ground what the oil is doing to the gulf. what about its effect on the president's political capital? joining me this morning, john dickerson. always good to have you with us. we talked about those revised estimates now coming out. the president headed back down on monday. but appearance really is everything. especially when you're dealing with something like political capital. is the president and the administration, are they doing enough or at least giving the appearance that they're doing enough? >> they're doing about as much as they can. the problem for the president and the administration is there's not a lot they can do. everybody's looking at the oil that's out there gushing from the ground and the president is still waiting on bp to shut down that spill. and while the administration looks so limited, americans don't look their presidents to look impotent, and that's in part what's happening. while that's the case, all of these uncertain things still keep popping out, the amount of oil coming out, whether the boom is working, whether there's enough tankers to deal with the oil being sucked up. so there's all these uncertainties that keep popping up every day which aeds to the sense of weak ms. >> you mentioned there isn't a lot more that the president orredor theed a member strags can administration did k. do, but there seems to be a feeling that people think they should. what could this effect be headed it down the road with some of the other law make makers who a charge? >> in a long term sense, this is just one more long glaring example of people don't trust the government. the political impact in addition to that is that this just kind of takes up all of the room on the newscasts in other ways so that to the extent that lawmakers want to try to make the case that they have been useful ons these other issue rngs particularly the economy, it's hard for them to get their message through. >> it's also spilling into international politics. we know the president is supposed to speak by phone with david cameron later today, so that's another angle he has to work on. what else can the administration do to improve their image? >> the president will be going down there. there will have to continue to be more of that. the problem is that they need to have one smrl person. and when you have democratic senator nelson from florida saying that they still don't know who is in charge that's a problem. he's not from the opposite party. >> plenty to talk about on this one for a little while. john dickerson, always good to have you with us. rebecca jarvis is standing by at the news desk with the rest of the morning's hoeadline. good morning. happy saturday. the lone suspect in the disappearance of an alabama teenager five years ago is being held in peruvian prison on murder charges and robbery charges. jor van van der sloot, a dutch national, has reportedly confessed to killing a peruvian woman in lima, the capital, last month. police say van der sloot has also told them he knows where holloway's body is buried. the family of 7-year-old oregon boy missing for more than a week made an emotional plea friday. kyron horman disappeared less than 200 feet from his portland elementary school on the morning of june 4th. the national guard has joined police and hundreds of residents looking for the boy. kyron's family released a statement pleading for his safe return. and it's safe to say each of the 32 teams faced road blocks before qualifying to play in the world cup. for the u.s. soccer team, the road to the tournament in south africa was blocked by an elephant. twice. on friday. it's not clear if the same elephant caused both delays. no doubt the team will never forget the encounter. it's about 15 past the hour. and wherever are you today, make it a great looking today. whether sunny or rainy, you guys never complain about a thing. just noncomplainers. >> is there something you need, lon?
