Millions of dollars in lawsuits filed by patients after their gynecologist is accused of secretly videotaping one of them. Meghan mccorkell speaks to one of the patients who is suing. Reporter good morning, the first two lawsuits were filed against Johns Hopkins on friday and many more are expected to come. I cannot believe it. Thats a violation. This is shocking. Reporter patient after patient of the doctor in shock. The obgyn who worked at john hopkins for 25 years is under investigation. He took his life on monday. I was so comfortable, i referred my mother to him. Reporter bell has filed one of the first law suits against the state and the hospital. I had no idea that this man was capable of doing such acts. Reporter 685 patients have signed on for another Class Action Lawsuit against Johns Hopkins. The hospital did not do enough to protect its patients. What did he do with his images . Did he put them on a site . Did he sell them . Reporter investigators believe that dr. Levy may have used a camera hidden inside of his pen to tape his patients. That invasion has some paranoid about feature doctor visits. Im going to say, can i see your person. Reporter Johns Hopkins released a statement. Dr. Levy saw a thousand patients during his time at Johns Hopkins. Multivehicle crash is under investigation this morning in anne arundel county. Police are saying that three vehicles crashed yesterday. A ford pickup hit a mini van, that caused it to push into the path of a gm c pickup. The driver of the ford truck sustained lifethreatening injuries. The driver of the mini van sustain serious injuries. The other driver had minor injuries. It is not clear the alcohol or speed played a role in the crash. Another shakeup in the Baltimore Police department. After a Training Instructor shot a trainee in the head. The Academy Director announced he is leaving the force. At the same time there is good news in the case. Mary bubala reports on the improving conditions on the wounded trainee. Reporter ten days ago a university of Maryland Police trainee was rushed to a state Police Helicopter suffering a gun shot wound to the head. He is stable, with any thoughts or predictions about longterm neurologic outcome at this point. Reporter the recruit was shot by his Training Officer who mistook his Service Weapon for a training weapon inside of the old rose wood center. Now, two weeks later sources tell wjz Eyewitness News that the trainee is talking a little and able to recognize people. Police visioner has visited his bedside . There doctor have said to me, she progressing better than what they expected. However this is a log road. When you have those type of injuries. You can not be too sure. Reporter the commissioner shutdown the Police Academy for a week. Six officers in the chain of command have been suspended. A wjz Eyewitness News found a lack of staffing and supervision, that leadership didnt know the old hospital site was being used for training. The Maryland State Police is conducting an investigation into what went wrong. Mary bubala, wjz Eyewitness News. Well, two of the six officers suspended after the shooting have been reinstated four of them are off the job this morning. The Justice Department is joining a lawsuit against the cyclist Lance Armstrong. The suit lengths that he concealed his use of performance enhancing drug and defrauded his major sponsor, the u. S. Postal service and armstrong and the Postal Service riding team violated their agreement using the drugs. More coming up in the next half hour. A new bge rate increase takes effect today. So Pay Attention to the bill. The Maryland Public Service commission has granted 65 of the utilitys requested increase for electric and gas rates for average electricity customers the bills will go up 3 a month and gas customers under 3 every month. Bge is saying the expenses will be used to updated the utilitys aging infrastructure . There fact is that baltimore is no different than any other city in the mid atlantic or the next. We have a lot of infrastructure that is aging. We can see it with bridges and tunnels and water and sewer systems. Were no different. We need to continue to invest and reinvest in the system. Massive automatic spending cuts will take effect in less than a week. Democrats are saying if the cuts go through on the 1st of march, everyone, from food inspectors to fbi agents will lose their jobs. But republicans are accusing the white house of using scare tactics the raise taxes. Among the many areas impacted if those cuts take effect marylands airports. The rain that we have had is falling down in a mid misty fashion on the cold areas. In the suburbs not the warmer conditions early on. Four deaths are now being blamed on the winter storm that has moved from the midwest to the great lakes. Many folks in the nations heartland will spend the day shoveling inches of snow, but some are saying it is not necessarily a bad thing. From oklahoma to michigan, the snow totals range from half of a foot to a foot and a half. Slick roads caused this collision in iowa. Kansas city reported 120 accidents in the state. 300 in minnesota. Heavy snow caved in roofs and Airline Schedules were marred in houma, chicago and st. Louis. Ice caused this jet to skid off of the runway in cleveland, nobody was hurt, but some westerns welcomed the snow. When you looked up this morning and saw the snow, what did you think . Any moisture is great. Reporter george richardsons family has farmed this land in illinois since 1840. The persistent. A medical helicopter crashes in Oklahoma City just 100 feet from a nursing home. Medics are saying two of the three people onboard were killed. The three perm was pulled from the wreckage by nursing home workers. He is listed in Critical Conditions this morning. The flight team was traveling to pickup a patient. No one on the ground was seriously injured. The search continues this morning for the gunman who pulled the trigger in a wild, deadly shootout on the las vegas strip. The gunfire led to this fiery accident involving a car and a taxicab. Police quired the driver of the car as a rapper named kenny cheery. Someone in the suv opened fire on his vehicle following an argument in the valet area of a casino. The federal agencies in neighboring states are on the look out for the range rover. The driver and the passenger in the taxicab died in the accident. Researchers are saying there is a growing concern in lake tahoe it is because of a growing population of goldfish. The fish, we usually see in homes are living and thriving in lakes and streams. Experts are saying it is because people are emptying their aquariums into open waters. Ben carson speaks to wjz Eyewitness News. We have the story. Reporter are you surprised about the attention that this has gotten, dr. Carson. I am. Reporter in his first interview with a wjz Eyewitness News tv station. Dr. Ben carson talked about his recent attack on president Barack Obamas policies. Our deficit is a big problem. With the person is born, give them a birth certificate and an electric medical record and a Health Savings account. Reporter the speech has been viewed 3 million times on youtube and praised by many conservatives. President barack obama, the doctor is in the house. People are not used to hearing things that make sense which out of washington. So, somebody gets up and says something that makes sense, it is like people start hyperventilater. Reporter dr. Carson is one of the worlds top neurosurgeons now he is concerned about political gridlock in washington. The best thing they can possibly do is stop trying to interfere with everybodys life. Were seeing milder air moving in on top of a frozen layer that came in yesterday evening and in the overnight hours. Now were dealing with a bit of cooling. That mild air is sitting there and cooling and creating clouds out there at ground level. We have fog this morning. So, visibility is challenging if youre moving around early on. The sun will come up and clear things out. Right now, 34 degrees at bwi. Then, temperatures in the freezing range in oakland. We have a Winter Weather advisory in effect until the sun comes up. Thanks, tim. First, heres what people are talking about today. Hundreds of patients are suing Johns Hopkins hospital after their gynecologist is accused of secretly recording exams. Attorneys are saying that the hospital did not do enough to protect patients from dr. Levy who committed suicide after being fired from the hospital. Nearly 700 patients have signed on for a Class Action Lawsuit against Johns Hopkins, seeking 70 million in damage. Another patient filed a lawsuit against levys estate and the hospital itself. I had no idea this man was capable of doing such acts. John hopkins released a statement, saying in part Baltimore City hallicide detectives are looking for answers after the bodies of two people are found in a burned out car. Police taped off a block area where the burning car was found in an alley. The 2000 block of north monroe street in west baltimore. Police found the bodies of two people inside of the car. It is not clear if they died from the fire or before the flames erupted. We now know the ideas of identities of a man and two children killed in prince georges county. Firefighters are saying prices were killed in thursdays fire. Ag11yearold who was reviewing revived after being pulled from the home without a pulse is in grave condition this morning. An adult female and an 8year old twin sister remain in the hospital because of smoke inhalation and minor injuries. The cause of the blaze was electrical in nature and an accident. A Baltimore County woman is in the hospital this morning after being attacked by her own dog. Baltimore police are saying she was attacked by were of her two pill bulls. She has serious injuries this morning. The dogs ran away after the attack, but they were found a short time later. Investigators are saying one of the dogs became aggressive and was shot and killed by one of the officers, but the second dog or the second pit bull was located and in care of Baltimore County animal control. The Justice Department and the Postal Service go after Lance Armstrong in a federal law suit against the cyclist. The government is saying he and his teammates owe 30 million in sponsorship money. We have the latest. Reporter the u. S. Postal service paid Lance Armstrong millions to wear the logo. Now, they want to money back. There is a lawsuit that accuses the cyclist of defrauding the Postal Service. The cyclist denied drug accusations, but last month he admitted to oprah he doped his way to 7 titles. I view this situation as one big lie. I repeated a lot of times. Reporter the cyclists was in settlement negotiations with lawyers, but talks broke down because two sides were tens of millions of dollars a part. In a statement, Justice Department is saying Lance Armstrong and his cycling team took 30 million from the u. S. Postal Service Based on their promise to pay play fair and abide by the whiles including the rules against doping, but armstrongs attorneys is saying their clients drug use did not damage the Postal Agency and may have benefited it by 100 million. On wednesday armstrong said he will not talk to the u. S. Antidoping officials, that means his ban will remain in place. This morning former olympian Oscar Pistorius is free on bail in south africa. Prosecutors there insisted that the runner was a flight risk, but the judge disagrees. We have more with the latest on the case. South africa judge released the athlete on bail until his trial for the throttle shooting on his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. A camera crew followed his car to his uncles home. The court ruled the runner could not return to his own house, the scene of the crime. Prosecutors charged the former olympian, known as blade runner with premeditated murder say that he intended to kill the model when he shot four times through a bathroom door after a heated argument, but the double amputee claims that he accidentally shot her. New information this morning nothing volving a maryland dna law being challenged in the Supreme Court. Maryland has required people convicted of serious crimes to provide a sample of their dna for years. But the state changed that law back in 2009. Now people arrested for certain Violent Crimes have to provide dna. However, according to newly released state data, 29 of 43 convictions made over the last four years could have happen without the law ever being changed. The change is set to be, be argued in the Supreme Court on tuesday. Final preparations are underway for hollywoods biggest and most glamorous night, the academy awards. Then it was today be in place until the overnight hours. When these are issues it is just until the sun comes up, the temperatures have high enough to meltdown the frozen precipitation. So, well have basically a meltdown as soon as the sun comes up. The temperatures are starting to reflect that. We have rain on the eastern shower and cutting the corner son southern maryland. The light rain that hit yesterday evening, the temperatures were just cold enough to cause a bit of a frozen layer. Thats what is in place right now. It is going to take a while. A united flight from Fort Lauderdale hit a patch of ice landing in ohio and skidded off the runway. More than 100 passengers were onboard along with five crew members. Witnesses saw the plane go one way, and then another. Then ended up in the grass. It managed to keep going. The next thing you know, there was a larger bump and then we were down. So, visibility around the area will be a bit of a problem this morning. There is a Winter Weather advisory in place until 10 00 this morning. Until the temperatures area wide get above freezing and meltdown the layer of ice on the ground. So, be careful this morning. It is the type of morning to go out and slip. Sliding with cars. So, be careful. 34 degrees around the beltway. So, the hot air is not far away. We do have a chance of showers through the day. The temperatures up until the mid 40s. Major legal action against the prestigious Johns Hopkins hospital. Millions of dollars of lawsuit filed by patients after their gynecologies is accused of secretly videotaping one of them. Meghan mccorkell spoke to one of the patients. Reporter good morning, the first two lawsuits were filed against Johns Hopkins on friday and many more. I cannot believe it. Thats a violation. This is just shocking. Reporter patient after patient of dr. Levy in shock. The obgyn who worked at john hopkins for 25 years under investigation for secretly photographing and videotaping his patient. He took his life on monday. I felt so comfortable that i referred my mother to him. Reporter bell a patient for six years has filed one of the first law suits against levys estate and the hospital. I had no idea that this man was capable of doing such acts. Reporter 685 patients have signed on for another Class Action Lawsuit against john hopkins. Attorneys are saying the hospital did not do enough to protect its patients. What did he do with theseilityages . Did he put them on any sites . Did he sell them . Reporter investigators believe dr. Levy may have used a camera hidden inside of his pen to tape his patients. That invasion has some paranoid about future doctor visits. Im going to ask can we see your person. Reporter john hopkins released a statemented saying any invasion of patients privacy is installable. Is intolerable. Reporter police are now sorting through what they call an extensive amount of evidence discovered inside of dr. Levys home. Meghan mccorkell, wjz Eyewitness News. Thank you, meghan. Dr. Levy saw a thousand patients during this time at john hopkins. A multivehicle crash is under investigation this morning in anne arundel county. Three values crashed yesterday. It all happened when a ford pickup hit a mini van and it pushed it into the path of a gm c pickup. The driver of the ford truck has lifethreatening injuries. The driver of the mini van has serious injuries. It is not known if alcohol or speed played a role in the crash. Another shakeup this morning in the Baltimore Police department. Just after a Training Instructor shot a trainee in the head. Now the police Academy Director appointed weeks ago says that he is leaving the force. That a time, there is good news in the case. Mary bubala reports on the improving condition of the wounded trainee. Reporter ten days ago a university of Maryland Police trainee was rushed to a state Police Helicopter suffering a gun shot wound to the head. He immediately want into surgery. He is stable, but any, um thoughts or predictions about longterm neurologic outcome at this point are way, way, way too early. The recruit was shot by his Training Officer, who mistook his Service Woman for weapon for a training weapon. Now, less than two weeks later sources tell wjz Eyewitness News, that trainee is talking a little bit and even able to recognize people. Police commissioner bats has visited his bedside. The doctors said that he is progressing better than expected. However this is a long road and when you have the injuries that he sustained you cannot be out of the woods. The commissioner shutdown the Police Academy for a week. Six officers in the chain of command has been suspended. A wjz Eyewitness News investigation showed a lack of staffing and supervise, that leadership didnt know that the old hospital site was used for training. The Maryland State Police is conducting an investigation into what went wrong. Mary bubala, wjz Eyewitness News. Two of the six officers suspended after the shoot having now been reinstated. Four are still off of the job this morning. The Justice Department is joining a lawsuit against disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong. The suit alleges the champion conseized his use of performance enhancing drug and defrauded his sponsor, the u. S. Postal service and armstrong and his teammates violated their agreement using the drug. More coming up in the next half hour. In the next few weeks make sure that you closely look at your bge bill, because rates take an increased to. The Maryland Public Service commission granted 65 of the utilitys request 175 million increase for electric and gas rates. For average electricity customers that means their bills will go up a little bit more than 3 every month. An average gas customer will see an increase under 3 every month. Bge is saying it will be used to update the utilitys aging infrastructure. The fact is that, baltimore is no different than any other city in the mid atlantic or the northeast. We have a lot of infrastructure that is aging. We see it with bridges and, and tunnels. We see it with water and sewer systems. Were no different. We need to continue to invest and reinvest in the systems to the sure that we keep up with the system and modernize the system. That takes investment. Bge is saying with the new increase customers bills will be lower than back in 2009 because the cost of energy dropped. Massive automatic spending countries will take affect in less than a week. Democrats are saying if the cuts go through on the first of march, everyone from food inspectors to fbi agents will lose their jobs. But republicans are accusing of the white house of using scare tactics to raise taxes. Among the many areas impacted if the cuts take effect are marylands airports cdc see widespread delays at bwi and smaller airports could shutdown. Kai jackson has more on the looming travel crisis. Reporter a budget battle in washington, d. C. Could have a Ripple Effect on air travel across the country. The Obama Administration is warning that it could be devastating. Flights to major cities like new jersey, chicago and San Francisco and others could experience delays up to 90 minutes. During peak hours. Reporter it is a high stakes debate, with 85 million in cuts on the line. I think for the most part it is posturing on both sides. Reporter transportation officials are saying it could force furloughs of airtraffic controllers. As a result control towers in cities across the country would close. In maryland, the towers after five regional and local airplanes could close if the spending cuts take effect. All right. They provide an important function in busy airspace. Reporter it is also possible that tsa screeners could be furloughs at the nations busiest airports. If that happens travelers are expected to expect lengthy delays. Passengers here at bwi marshall is saying any delays grater than what they experience would be a big headache. Someone who travels president business it is a concern. The frozen precipitationation that came down yesterday evening fell on roadways that were warm enough to melt it down. As the temperatures dropped overnight and into the early hours of the morning much of that froze. If youre out and about this morning there is a thin layer of ice in place. There is a Winter Weather advisory in place until 10 00. Until we see the temperatures above freezing long enough to melt it down. So, you can see around the immediate metro area and points to the south and east the temperatures are above freezing, but you get out towards westminster, you get the idea, thats where the Winter Weather advisory is in place. And the temperatures are still hovering around freezing. The winds are coming in currently from the north at 5 miles per hour. A bit of an easterly component as well, adding to the moisture in the atmosphere. That is a result of the storm system that is moving along the coastline and expected to develop and move to the northeast. The big, massive system that moved across the midwest hit drier air and broke up as it moved into the mid atlantic. The top portion of it took the snow up to the great lakes. The lower portion keep the rain streaming across georgia and the North Carolina and South Carolina and virginia, that is moving off to the coastline now. Going to develop into a low that will kick wind back and the rain back early on today and then move to the north and northeast. It is going to move away. High pressure is going to build in. The result of that for us is clearing tonight. Then tomorrow well see sun, but the winds will also pick up as one system moves out and the next one will move in. First, heres what people are talking about today. Four deaths are now blamed on the winter storm that moved from the midwest to the great lakes. Many people in the nations heartland will spend the day shoveling several inches of snow. As we report, some are saying that is not necessarily a bad thing. Reporter from oklahoma to minnesota, snow totals range from half of a foot to a foot and a half. Slick roads caused this collision in iowa. Kansas reported 120 accidents in the state. 300 in minnesota. Heavy snow caved in roofs and Airline Schedules were snarled from chicago and st. Louis. Ice caused this jet to skid off of a runway in cleveland. Nobody was hurt, but some westerns welcome the storm. When you woke up this morning and looked out here and saw the snow, what did you think . Any a little bit of moisture is always great. Reporter george richardsons family has farmed this land in illinois since 1840. The persistent drought that has parched half of the country cost him 50 of his corn crop last year. I think we would need many feet of snow and then a nice slow they show that moisture would sink about the ground. Forecasters predict above normal springlike conditions from the Mississippi Valley eastward into the great lakes region. Moderate precipitation through next month. A medical helicopter crashes in Oklahoma City, 100 feet from a nursing home. Medics are saying two of the people on board of the aircraft were killed. Nursing home workers pulled a third person from the wreckage. He is in Critical Condition this morning. The flight team was traveling to pickup a patient and no one was injured on the ground. Researchers are saying there is a growing problem growing, literally, in lake huso, it is because of a lowing population of goldfish. The fish that we see in homes are living and thriving in lakes and streams. Experts are saying cause people are emptying their acquirements to open water. They are afraid it will upset the ecology and food chain of the lake. Like snake heads did here. Are they call coy if they are large and goldfish in a small tank . Yeah. Okay. First, heres what people are talking about today. Hundreds of patients are suing Johns Hopkins hospital after their gynecologist is accused of secretly recording exams. Attorneys are saying that the hospital did not do enough to protect patients from dr. Levy, who committed suicide after being fired from the hospital. 700 patients have signed on for a Class Action Lawsuit against hopkins seeking 70 million in damage. Another patient filed a lawsuit against levys estate and the hospital as well. I had no idea that that, this man was capable of doing such acts. Johns hopkins released a statement. The legal problems for former Tour De France winner, Lance Armstrong are mounting this morning. Now the Justice Department is going after the disgraced cyclist. In a federal law suit, the government is saying he and his team owe millions of dollars in sponsorship money. We have more. Reporter the u. S. Postal service paid Lance Armstrong millions to way its logo, now the government wants that money back. The Justice Department is joining a lawsuit that accuses the cyclist of defrauding the Postal Service. The cyclist denied drug accusations when he rode for the team, but last month he admitted to oprah he doped his way to seven titles. I view this situation as one big lie. Reporter the cyclist was in settlement negotiations with government lawyers but talks choke down because the two sides were tens of millions of dollars a part. In a statement the Justice Department says armstrongs attorneys argue their clients drug use did not damage the Postal Agency and may have benefited it by 100 million. That was denise reporting. On wednesday armstrong is saying he will not talk to the u. S. Antidoping officials that means his ban stays in place. Baltimore county homicide detectives are looking for answers after the bodies of two people are found in a burned out car. The car was found in an alley in the 2000 block of north monroe street in west baltimore. Police discovered the becausies putting the fire out. It is not clear if they died by the fire or before the flames erupted. If you have information give police a call. A Baltimore County woman is in the hospital this morning after being attacked by her own dogs. Baltimore police are saying that she was attacked by one of two of her pit bulls. She has serious injuries this morning. Police are saying the pit bulls ran away after the attack and found a short time later. One of the dogs were aggressive. The officer had to shoot and kill the pit bull. The second dog is in the care of Baltimore County animal workers. From news now to music. That created basic problems that we have in place even now. So, the temperatures area wide get above freezing. Right now we have frozen precipitation in the northern counties. Hagerstown as well and out towards the west. The light frozen precipitation, the light layer of ice right now is going to be something that you have to deal with early on. Just be very careful, until the sun comes up and the temperatures across the region ran high enough and long enough to melt it down. 34 degrees around the immediate metro area. A northerly wind right now. A northeast wind around the Eastern Shore. Most of that on the Eastern Shore is in the form of rain. It is going to be really rain across the area for much of the day. The massive system that moved across the midwest broke up into two parts. It hit dry area cross the mid atlantic. The frozen precipitation moved to the great lakes. The rage around the North Carolina and South Carolina and georgia. But we have a bit of the frozen mix that is moving across the region. It is going to setup shop just across the Eastern Shore and move up to the northeast. What it is going to do for us is kick back that marine layer, that east winds. It is moving up. We and keep the moisture sitting over us for now. High pressure builds in. We are going to see clearing late tonight. Sunshine and a few patches of sun breaking through out towards the western counties and then see a better day tomorrow with temperatures up in the 40s, breezy conditionses as one system moves out and High Pressure moves in. First there is a problem on a runway at a cleveland airport. The united flight from Fort Lauderdale hit a patch of ice landing in ohio and skidded off of the runway. 100 passengers were onboard along with five crew members. Witnesses are say immigrant plane went one way and then another and ended up in the grass. One bump led to another. Then it just kind of kept going. You know, there was a much larger bump and then we were down . There plane shouldnt stop that quickly here. An investigators say no one was injured in the incident. Floodwaters overtake athen, greece. The sudden and heavy rains continued for most of the day causing rivers to over flow. The rising water trapped people in their homes and carried parked vehicles downstream. One woman suffered a heart attack and died trying to escape the flood. They received more than 1,000 emergency calls so far. Brewers fans in milwaukee are braving the cold this morning. They are hunkering down in tents for an architect tailgate to get first dibs on individual tickets for the upcoming brewers season. It will not get warm for a couple of hours.
