Its wjz, marylands news station. It is the top of the hour, and what started out as steamy has turned into stormy in a lot of this area. Kristys got traffic after martys first warning weather. Its turned into a real storm in the past 5 minutes. Before we put the radar in motion and zoom in on something, heres the current active Severe Weather alerts. For eastern Baltimore County, Harford County Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 6 45. For central Harford County until 6 30 we have a Tornado Warning in effect. Now what i want to do is focus in on one particular area here. This would be central Harford County just southeast of bel air. And that is going to be one heavy duty cell of rain, and i think this may be, you know, just a little west of crazy well. Little west of crazy what were talking about here with concern about rotation. This is where thunderstorms started meandering across the area here just as we were coming on the air. Theyve also dropped enough rain that we also have for portions of Baltimore County, the Northwest Side of the beltway a Flash Flood Warning in effect until 8 45. Some of the tributaries that run through Mount Washington and for Harford County until about 8 45. What we really want to talk about right now is the Severe Thunderstorm Warning which would be exiting Baltimore County now, the Severe Thunderstorm Warning for all of Harford County and again for central Harford County theres a Tornado Warning in effect until about 6 30. As far as the rest of the region goes, 95 southbound you will see bright lights there as you make your approach to the beltway on the northeast corner. Theres a look at your overall speeds around the beltway and 70 moving well this morning, no problems to report so far. Lets take a live look, we have more activity there, 95 just south of 543 in the Harford County area. Now for more of the stories people are talking about heres don. A murder for hire trial in Baltimore County is in the hands of a jury. Mike schuh has the story. Good morning don, good morning everyone. In just a few hours, the jury will begin its first full day of deliberations. At first karla porter blamed the 2010 murder of her husband on an armed robber, not the hitman she now admits she hired to kill him. Have you ever seen him before . No. Porter repeated lies to police after the murder but eventually confessed during this taped interrogation. The Baltimore County woman admitted she enlisted the help of several people including family members to hire the triggerman Walter Bishop who fired the fatal shots inside the hess gas station the couple owned together. Tion the couple what happened karla . He was just being really mean over the past few days. During trial porter told jurors she endured years of verbal, physical and psychological abuse. During closing arguments her attorney told jurors she planned his murder in self defense saying the abuse escalated to the point where karla porter in her own mind felt the fear of danger or serious bodily harm was imminent. Prosecutors paint a different tale saying porter is lying about the abuse and has had three and a half years to come up with the most offensive stories she could have come up with about her husband. John cox says porter, even if everything she said is true it doesnt excuse what she has done. Porter is the last of five coconspirators to go on trial. The hitman is already in jail. Thank you very much mike. The jury will begin its first full day of deliberations today. If porters convicted prosecutors will seek a sentence of life without the possibility of patrol. The traveling hospital technician charged with infecting patients with hepatitis c in several states including maryland has reached a plea deal with prosecutors. David key cow ski is said to plead guilty. He has hepatitis c and injected himself with painkiller syringes and replaced the drug with saline solution talk abouted with his blood. Thats how he infected four dozen patients patients with the deadly liver disease. The red cross is stepping in to help vacationers who lost their belongings when a resort near disney world fell into a sinkhole. 1 3 of a 3story building crumbled into the 50foot wide hole. More than 100 guests got out of the building safely. One woman who had just checked in with her 3yearold son felt the building begin to shake. The building twisted initially, and then started crumbling. Windows were exploding. Sink holes are common in florida. Theyre created when a layer of limestone beneath the soil is washed away by water. The developer says testing done before this resort was built 15 years ago showed the ground was stable. Baltimore police Say Community intel led them to suspects in this crime, and they say if citizens stay involved, it could stop other crimes from occurring. The citizens on patrol walks was scheduled to start tuesday august 20th. The Baltimore City Police Department is expected to assist residents and Business Owners. Also in this city, the controversial Harbor Point Development deal is one step closer to being approved this morning. This after the City Council Gave preliminary approval to the 107 million in Public Financing for the project, which will be built along the waterfront of fells point and harbor east. Theyve been trying to stop the city from giving public money to the developer. The mayor argues it will bring 20 million a year in taxes to the city. Heres first warning doppler weather radar, want to put it in motion. About 4 30 some strong thunderstorms started moving across the region. We have a Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for Harford County until 6 45, but the bigger issue right now is a Tornado Warning in effect for central and this is about the best we can narrow it down, for central Harford County slightly north of aberdeen just to the west of halve degran grace and to the east of churchill. This is a cell were watching closely for some potential rotation. Its a very warm, humid and unstable morning, and at a minimum, youre looking at really heavy rain right now in central Harford County. Again, you start looking at pigger picture and you can see Bigger Picture and you can see this part of a bigger thunderstorm rumbling right up the i95 corridor. Now, for Baltimore County and for Harford County when it comes to rain having fallen, we have a Flash Flood Warning in effect through 8 45. And as i widen the radar out even more, you can see a bigger slug of moisture sitting out to the west. Thats going to be a couple of inches of rain thats going to fall between now and 3 00 this afternoon. But having said that, our biggest concern right now is central Harford County. I want to go over here just southwest near charlestown maryland and that is some pretty darn heavy rain falling. So central Harford County, lets triangulate this between churchill, aberdeen, darlington and Havre De Grace. Stay alert for the next 15 minutes. Don take it away. Its a humid, warm and unstable morning and we are looking at some really heavy duty weather right now in Harford County, thunderstorms started meandering across the area at about 4 30 this morning the now were exceptionally concerned about an area in central Harford County that has a Tornado Warning in effect for about another 12 minutes. Theres a Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect through 6 45 and its this one particular area between pore deposit, churchville aberdeen and Havre De Grace that has our attention. This is some of the heavier rain that our Doppler Radar is going to be able to track, and this is kind of moving sprightly in a northeast direction. Whether theres circulation or not that remains to be seen. Its certainly going to be port deposit, and Havre De Grace and south. Lets widen this out and show you the extent of Severe Weather through Harford County. This will be moving into cecil county before too long. Im pretty sure were going to be adding cecil county into this discussion. For Harford County and Baltimore County through about 8 45 we have a Flood Warning in effect for rain thats already fallen, and theres a flood watch area wide in effect for rain that is going to fall between now and about 3 00. Look at that slug of moisture to the west. I want to go into Carroll County right now. That is going to be a thunderstorm. We have no severe notety notifications for Carroll County at this time. Approaching westminster, silver run and manchester that has got to be a rather zesty thunderstorm itself. Lets go right into central Harford County and take a look at a pretty heavy thunderstorm thats now slowly moving up the 95 corridor and before not too long, if not already, approaching parts of cecil county. Forecast today after we look at a high of 75 degrees, 90 humidity. This afternoon the this action frankly just popped up on us about an hour hour and a half ago. We didnt think theyd blossom like this. 85 is going to be the high. We get clearing through the Late Afternoon and evening. Beautiful tomorrow, 78. And through the fiveday. The beltway, on the west side outer loop delays stretching from 70 to Baltimore National pike. On the outer loop from 83 to 95, 55 Miles Per Hour average and 10 minutes to get through. Lets now take a live look as you can see we have some cars out there, but everything is moving right along there on the beltway at harford road. I know its kind of hard to see, but right there just north of Havre De Grace, ill zoom in on it, you can see it over perry point just to the west of perryville just to the immediate east of Havre De Grace, that is some real intensity inside of what is a rather intense cell, inside of what is a severe thunderstorm to say the least. And again, we have a Tornado Warning in effect for about another 9 minutes for Harford County. This could be extended into cecil county. Well get notification on that within about 9 minutes. Right now if theres an area were concerned about its going to be from north, just slightly north, northwest of perryville to south southeast of perryville is all those neighborhoods inbound. Havre de grace youre getting hit right now too. That is real intense. I dont want to initiate diminish the fact its not quite as purple in Havre De Grace. Even where you just see the heavy duty reds that is a severe thunderstorm enough to cause problems right now. I just want to throw a glance over here to Carroll County because i think you folks may get an upgrade in this thunderstorm thats rumbling across your area. Its going to be quite active for about the next half hour area wide and until 8 45 we have a Flash Flood Warning in effect for baltimore and harford counties. Harford counties. Now just basically northeast of perryville, and approaching cecil county, and cecil county you are now under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 7 30 this morning. Theres a severe thunderstorm moving up the 95 corridor with the potential for rotation in central Harford County right now. Thats what it looks like in the harbor right now, but it is pouring up in Harford County into cecil county. Kristy will have traffic right after martys first warning weather. I want to start out with a wide viewing area, how active its gotten weather wise over the past 45 minutes. What we want to look at right now is harford and cecil counties where a severe thunderstorm is rolling up the 95 corridor. Okay. The Tornado Warning in effect for Harford County has just been dropped, but having said that, for you folks in cecil county, this rather heavy cell within a larger pocket of heavy rain is indeed moving your way. Its the purples youre looking at within the red returns of the severe thunderstorm itself. Its moving right up the 95 corridor. This is what prompted the alert action for a potential tornado in central Harford County. Again, that has been dropped. Cecil county you have a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 7 30. 6 45 for Harford County, you still have a Severe Thunderstorm Warning but as this action moves up the corridor. You folks in cecil county from northeast and northeast of the city and southwest the direction, youre getting hit pretty hard right now in areas just to the north and east of northeast, especially elkton, if you want to extrapolate this out moving up towards the wilmington area, you can. Indeed if this stays intact that is coming your way. Look at that, you can see the radar scan go through there and sweep across the northeast. Look how that consolidated itself. That is one big heavy cell of rain. Cecil county under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 7 30. Harford county its only a matter of procedure that youre under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 6 45. That issue is on the wane. Having said Baltimore County and Harford County through about 8 45 are under a Flash Flood Warning. Area wide we are under a flood watch through 3, for more rain out to the west thats going to fall. Moving out to Carroll County, even though theres no alerts out thats a really heavy duty rainstorm that has now pressed through westminster, is moving towards hampstead, now starting to hit manchester and frankly will be approaching central Baltimore County before not too long. No alerts or advisories out for that yet, just a common sense look at the area, real quick, one more time. Lets look up the 95 corridor, northeast elkton, newark, glasgow being on the alert for heavy rain moving your way. Whats happening area wide on the way to work, heres Kristy Breslin wjz Traffic Control. Hi don, not quite as dramatic but still a couple complications, northbound 295 an accident reported at 198. Were dealing with the car fire in the aberdeen area, custis between mier and gunnison. As far as the beltway goes on the west side outer loop stop and go from 70 over to Baltimore National pike. Then youre back to the normal speed. As far as your overall travel times go on the outer loop from 8395, 55 Miles Per Hour average and 10 minutes to get through. Lets take a live look, a shot of the tidings Memorial Bridge bridge from Harford County into cecil county. For more of the top stories people are talking about heres don. Theres a new warning about the weather. Lets go back to first warning doppler weather radar now. Cecil county is as we were somewhat discussing moments ago that Severe Thunderstorm Warning that impacts you until 7 30 has now given us a Tornado Warning until 7 45. And i am positive were looking at this cell that now just out to the west of elkton over areas around northeast right now, and lets just move it even closer. Wow, that is some really heavy duty rain. Its only three steps below the largest rainfall that our Doppler Radar can see for us. And as we press out a little bit further, i just want to give you the idea of the extent of heavy rain. Southern border would be chesapeake city, Havre De Grace if you will through frankly york, pennsylvania, york county which also now theres a Flash Flood Warning in effect until 10 30. Of immediate concern right now is what has become now a really large consolidated cell of heavy and Severe Weather moving out through northeast taking aim at elkton and eventually newark here over the next few minutes. Id like to tell you is this moving real fast. It has somewhat slowed up to be quite honest about the deal. Were going to have to watch this very closely. Again, cecil county you have a Tornado Warning in effect through 7 15 and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect through 7 30. I just want to throw this in motion real quick. You will see all these returns disappear because im taking it back for a enough that you can see the history of the storm. And i want you to keep your eye frankly around perryville and Havre De Grace. Thats where you see this purple return get its act together and consolidate as it moves towards the northeast. Thats going to be the big problem right there. Again, its areas around northeast itself, elkton youre in the line of fire as are any communities, villages between northeast and newark here over at least the next 45 minutes. Again, a Tornado Warning in effect for cecil county through 7 15 and Severe Thunderstorm Warning through 7 30. And while were talking about heavy weather, i think wed be remiss if we didnt point out theres heavy weather, heavy rain sitting out to the west of the beltway itself and the entire 83 corridor, no warnings in effect for Carroll County right now but clearly hampstead and manchester are getting heavy rains which are just pushing through westminster. In line of fire for that will be the entire 83 north corridor. Again, the immediate concern and don well throw it back in a second, is going to be central cecil county. Well watch this very closely. He has infected at least four dozen patients in several states including maryland. Major changes in the Upcoming School year for Harford County and parents are outraged adds they have learned they will be asked to pay to have their children participate in Extracurricular Activities and newscast thats not all. Rochelle ritchie has the story. Harford county schools have decide today cut several bus routes leaving parents scrambling to find a way for their kids to get to school, all of this to make up for a 20 million deficit. With two and a half weeks before the first day of school, Harford County parents are hit with a double whammy. Theyll not only have to pay for their kids to participate in clubs and sports but getting to school could be a challenge for students with several bus routes cut. Its going to be a daily chore to get rides because my mom works late. The school board has decided its the only way to combat a 20 million deficit digging into the pockets of parents. The idea that this is in the best interests of the student, i dont agree. Neither do county officials. They have more than 13 million in a Budget Surplus for the school system. The Budget Committee says no they dont. They blame the deficit on a 6 million cut in state funding and a 15 million increase in expenditures. Changes of any kind are always difficult for everyone involved and we are committed to working with parents and the community to make this transition as easy as possible. Teachers worry the pay to play policy may leave some kids out. Not all students have the same financial ability and not all parents do, and so thats going to be hard on them. Parents will have to dish out 50 bucks for their kids to play sports. Im on two sports teams right now and im trying out for a third and thats 150 right there. Weve been following Severe Weather thats marched through Baltimore County, Harford County and now cecil county. Now in cecil county the nty. Situations gone from bad to worse a. Bigger view showing how much rain is actually falling in the immediate area now of harford and cecil county. Once we start to go back to this particular cell weve been watching thats just out to the northwest of elkton and actually northeast of northeast, weve now gone to the third highest rainfall rate that first warning doppler weather radar which is pretty darn powerful can pick up. This is Severe Weather within Severe Weather. Theres a Tornado Warning in effect 2348 7 15 for cecil county. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 7 30 for cecil county. Harford county you have a Flash Flood Warning through 8 45 with the extent of the Baltimore County Flash Flood Warning until 8 45. But for right now this is some really intense weather that is marching towards greater elton if you will, on it its way towards newark and any small towns, farms, villages, elkton, heights youre in line of fire for this heavy Severe Weather within Severe Weather itself. Theres no way to tell right now, were not in contact with spotters. Is that a tornado, but common sense says if you are anywhere northeast of not only this the purplish returns if you will, but if that black, those two black returns, you really need to stay alert. This is not a good scene coming down right now in Harford County, and again, ive got to widen this out. Id be remiss if i didnt point out the heavy rain thats right now getting ready to hit the 83 corridor thats already moved through a good portion of Carroll County, Carroll County northern Baltimore County youre not under any alerts right now. The fact of the matter is were looking at if not a strong rain, a rather heavy duty line of rain including some thunderstorms moving straight east, getting ready to move over hampstead, hair ford, id say the southern extent would be hunt valley. The biggest concern right now is around central cecil county trying between northeast and elkton that is bad news. Were going to go ahead, well take a break, well come right back. Well update first warning doppler weather radar and give you the outlook for the day. This is ,,,,,,,,,, Harford County your thunderstorm warning has expired. The focus is cecil county. Up the 95 corridor, that really intense rain that is pummeling central cecil county. I want to go back to first warning doppler weather radar. We were discussing in the break and don mentioned theres only been in the morning two or three times when weve seen a return outlined in black according to our scale. That is about as intense as youd ever want to see it. We have basically a three layer really intense cell of heavy weather within a severe thunderstorm. Theres going to be problemsen, and we do have a Tornado Warning in effect for 7 15 for cecil county. Its going to be in this area that is just now north of elkton heightings, south of single tear. Im not trying to diminish whats fag falling around cherry hill. This action is on its way in a northeasterly direction. If youre in newark, the reds alone are enough to get your attention and cause immediate ponding on roads and flash flooding increase in streams t. Is a bad situation all the way around. Again, though, ive got to widen this out and show this heavy rain that has moved across Carroll County, is now getting ready to hit the i85 north, the harrisburg expressway corridor.
