Condition. Shock university of Maryland College park, as a student kills two of his roommates, then turns the gun on himself. Wjz has been on this story since it broke this morning. Reporter police say the shooter was well armed, had strong ties to the baltimore area, and his victims, they say, had little warning. Reporter police say 23year old devon maurice greene, an accomplished engineering student at the university of maryland, was suffering from mental illness, when he shot two of his roommates, killing one of them, before shooting and killing himself with a 9 millimeter handgun, purchased in baltimore county. It happened at their home in college park. I heard these gunfire shots. So there were about 6 to 7 shots going pop, pop, pop. They also discovered a bag of weapons, to include a baseball bat, a machete, a fullyloaded semi automatic handgun and ammunition. Reporter green was an undergraduate at Morgan State University in baltimore, before continuing his education in college park. He was by many accounts, a student with a brilliant mind. Authorities say he lit several fires at the home, waking his roommates, just before 1 00 a. M. Then he pulled a gun from his waistband. It was a chaotic scene as the bullets were seen flying even blowing out the window of this suv. Reporter one of the bullets went straight through a neighbors window. I know. She said god was on her side. If she had been right there. She had the gun. The surviving victim was able to run from the home and call for help. Detectives had been able to speak to him at one point. And theyll continue to do so once hes in condition to do that. Reporter they couldnt say whether the student received a warn being green. But he said the school ramped up services for those who need help. It is an incredible tragedy. And our heart goes out to his family, his parents, and his loved ones. Reporter police say they had responded twice to the home before, but for nothing like this. The victim who died is 22year old steven raine. Hes from silver spring. Reporter people have been coming and going from the family home here all day long, trying to make sense of this violence. Reporter disbelief on golden ring court in rosedale. Neighbors shocked to hear he shot his college park roommates. Im very sad for them. Theyre a very nice family. Reporter wjz has learned devon green was one of nasas top interns. An internet biography states he was interested in robotic sciences. Green recently graduated in 2012. He was now pursuing his masters at college park. [ dwoking on the knocking on the door ] greens family declined to comment for wjz but provided critical information. Discts learned that the detectives learned that the shooter had been suffering from mental illness. Detectives let our they let our detectives know that he had this condition for the past year and in the past had been prescribed medication for this mental illness. Like many, they want to know where he got the guns. Somebody at school, getting shot up. And now its your neighbor involved in it . Yeah. Its really a shock to me. Really is. Reporter and we did get some information from state police. As to the source of that gun, we have learned that the handgun found on his possession was actually registered to him legally. Reporter a gun battle is under way near big bear, california, where Police Believe they have found Christopher Dorner, the subject of a massive manhunt. He is said to be holed up in a cabin, surrounded by law enforcement. Reporter these are pictures of the area where Police Believe they have located a heavilyarmed Christopher Dorner. The former lapd officer has been on the run since last week, when he allegedly shot and killed three people, including a police officer. Authorities have been searching the big bear area, since his burnedout truck was located there. Big bear is about 100 miles east of l. A. In the mountains. A massive gunfight has been under way. There are reports that two officers have been shot and wounded. Kcbskcal reporter carl evans was nearly caught in the crossfire and recorded this on his cell phone. [ gunshots ] reporter the Associated Press is reporting dorner broke into a cabin and tied up a couple. One of them was able to get away and call police. Dorner threatened warfare against the lapd. Law enforcement officials surrounding that cabin root now. This is after a very intense gun battle, where two officers were shot. No word yet on their condition. Reporter these charging documents out of harford county, give explicit detail between the sexual relationship between Amanda Miller and a 15 yearold High School Student. This student had been there and recognized her. It have involved a number of nude pictures and Text Messages being exchanged between miller and the victim. They took her in and sub subsequently charged her with third and fourth degree sex offenses, as well as abuse of a minor. Reporter parents here are disgusted. Im very upset about it. Because its trying to teach my kids what is right and wrong. And they got teachers doing this kind of stuff. Reporter students who knew miller say nothing about her seemed to draw concern. And later in the day, or at night, theyll go back to the northwest. That will allow colder air to come in from the north. And any precip that were having, expect to see rain in the afternoon. The victim was assaulted at the main intens entrance of gwens falls elementary school. The victim did not know her attacker. And no other students and staff were at the school at the time. Parents have been notified. Call it instinctive, call it aggression. Either way, the outcome is still shock and sadness for a pasadena family, whose pet goats were mauled to death. Police say the husky broke out of its yard and dug into another yard with another large dog. It was locate the and hit. We have located a deceased dog. That dog has no prior history with animal control. And we are looking for another dog. Reporter the breeder says huskies take effort. You must work it or it am get destructive, will want to dig out of your yard and run. Reporter the fact that the one dog ran away, doesnt buy much peace of mind for Sharon Manning and her neighbors. You have men and women that are looking at monitors that are providing control signals, through the network, to antennas on the unmanned vehicle. Reporter this is the Patuxent River unmanned vehicle. Wjz gained access to this secure facility, where cutting edge drones are put to the test. The massive plane you see is controlled remotely, only by train operators on the ground. Again, no pilot is inside, through a series of sensors and satellites. Turn left, turn right. Climb, descend, turn on a camera, turn off a camera. Reporter they also track storms, like hurricane sandy, flying at high altitudes for very long times, measuring things like wind speed and direction. Youre seeing things in higher detail. Reporter but theyre not stopping there. Police departments could use drones to check cars, catch speeders or catch criminals in baltimore and beyond.
