violated the law. state police decline to do so. two police unions already voted no confidence in the police chief, saying he turned a blind eye. the governor told wjz he is not getting involved. there is an ongoing investigation, a spokesperson said, and we prefer to let that run its course. >> reporter: and for his part, leopold main tapes he has -- maintains he has done nothing wrong. he and the chief have no plans to step down. next, they asked options going forward. and they plan to resubpoena the chief, monday night. reporting live, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> the aclu is calling the police chief's refusal to testify inexcusable. chaos at long reach high school in howard county. punches are thrown between an adult and a teenager on school property. wjz is live. weijia jiang explains what sparks the violence, and how it's affecting students there. weijia? >> reporter: students and parents say what they find most appalling is that the adult is an outsider. he walked right on the campus with no problem, with a dangerous mission in mind. >> reporter: cell phone video captures the terrifying moment an intruder, wearing a black ski mask, arrives at long beach high school in columbia. police say the man you see in blue only identified as an adult from baltimore, threw a punch at a 16-year-old junior, a member of the football team. when the student strikes back, the adult drops to the ground, unconscious. >> he just knocked him out. >> reporter: the video posted on the website, world star hip- hop.com, has gone viral. many viewers are stunned. >> it is a frightening situation for the students. and it's obviously not something that we face every day. but the staff appeared to handle it very quickly and to the best of their ability. >> reporter: you can see staff members getting involved when a 15-year-old freshman girl at the school has a violent reaction to the fight. police say she is at its center because she and the football player had argued repeat lead. and the man who showed up at school was acting on her behalf. >> he was actually a friend of the family of a student there at the school. he had gone there to fight another student. >> kind of maybes you -- makes you nervous. you know, that anyone could walk on school grounds and approach a student like that. >> reporter: though parents like eric bell are alarmed. similar situations -- adult involvement in similar situations is becoming more frequent. last may, a mom encouraged her son to fight a bully. and here issue a harford county father jumps into a brawl, cheering his daughter on. in all three cases, video of the beating quickly spread online. >> reporter: and police have charged that 15-year-old girl in the video as a juvenile with assault. they will also charge the adult with assault. as for that student who knocked him out, they say he won't be disciplined because he was acting in self-defense. reporting live, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, weijia, thank you. the school sent parents a letter to notify them of the incident. counselors are on hand to help students who may be upset by it all. tense moments today at a gas station in northwest baltimore. a woman's car goes up in flames at belvedere and reisterstown road. luckily, the woman was inside the gas station when it happened. no one was hurt. the president of maryland's largest public university, hands in her resignation. >> susan aldridge says it is time to step down as president of umuc. the school still hasn't explained the reason for her mysterious absence. in a statement today, aldridge says she thinks this is a good time to resign. she will remain on administrative leave and will work with the university on special projects at that time. >> umuc serves 90,000 students worldwide, through its classrooms and online courses. new details on the violent fight that terrified an owings mills neighborhood. tonight, police say they think they know exactly what happened. mike schuh has the announcement from detectives. mike? >> well, kai, it was a chaotic scene, speeding cars, a passenger nearly bleeding to death. someone taking shots at that car are as it roared off to the hospital. today, detectives announced arrest. >> take a look at ronald williams agency neck. see the stitches? that wound nearly killed him. police say he is one of nearly five men this tuesday. into the into a fight. and was stabbed. police have recovered a weapon. but it's not a nice. they say it's one-half of a pair of kitchen shears like these. >> the suspect who was ultimately stabbed in the incident and one of the victims are old childhood friends. they have known each other a very long time. there was disagreement leading up to the stabbing. >> reporter: he's bleeding so badly, he almost dies. his friends pile into this white crown vic. when police arrive, everyone is detained. and it is this group, all 18 to 21 years old, who is detained for questioning. in addition to williams, ryan johnson, christopher ramgi, meresferguson and jackson are, as of today, charged with attempted murder and assault. off camera today, scared neighbors are glad to hear this. >> there was a dispute between these two individuals in particular. and that is why this occurred. this is not a random attack. >> reporter: a shooting two blocks away, right after that stabbing is connected to this case. the crown vic has a bullet hole in one of its panels. two people in the house had minor stab wounds. no one inside the house has been charged in connection with this incident. police say they have been told, money might have been what started the trouble. >> reporter: all five are currently in the county detention center, awaiting arraignment. one of the men, jeffrey jackson, he is also charged with marijuana possession. reporting live in towson, mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news. back to you on tv hill. >> police are still investigating the shooting. and no arrests have been made in that part of the case. updating the breaking news in the controversial death of a florida teenager. the sanford police chief is temporarily stepping down, amid outcry over the fatal shooting of trayvon martin. danielle nottingham reports for wjz, with the growing demand for justice in this case. >> reporter: evelyn freeman drove three hours to attend a rally for trayvon martin. >> i was just compelled that i had to be here, as a parent, to just represent and get justice for this young man. >> reporter: demonstrators, including the reverend al sharpton, are expected to fill this park. it's near the community where neighborhood watch captain george zimmerman, shot martin dead. the unarmed 17-year-old was walking near his father's house last month when zimmerman saw him and called police. >> are you following us? -- him? >> yeah. >> okay. we don't need you to do that. >> reporter: zimmerman, who has not been charged, said he fired in self-defense when martin takenned him. the case sparked outrage nationwide. martin's parents met with federal officials who launched a civil rights investigation. >> our son is your son! >> reporter: demonstrators want zimmerman to be charged. and the local authorities who handled the case are under intense scrutiny. >> reporter: the sanford city council passed a no-confidence motion against the police chief over the shooting. >> it is apparent that my involvement in this is overshadowing the process. therefore, i have come to the decision that i must temporarily remove myself from the position as police chief for the city of sanford. >> reporter: zimmerman could still be charged. florida prosecutors will convene a grand jury next month. danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> florida's stand your ground law has been in effect since 2025. 20 other states have laws. moisture in the air may slow the visibility in the commute. and conditions were gloomy during morning workouts. right now, the skies have cleared up. sun is shining. temperatures are soaring. >> temperatures really did jump from the 60s to the 70s. some spots even got into the 80s. i'll show you that in a minute. first of all, very interesting shot. during the morning and early afternoon, all of that caused clearing on the eastern shore. and out to the west, where it got quite warm. take a look at the day. you can see how things got cleared up. and right now, a few leftover clouds. and temperatures have really jumped. 80 degrees now in cumberland. 77 in easton. 76 in washington and hagerstown. we're now at 71. still a bit of a breeze off the ocean. it's not going to get that warm. but tomorrow, that 80-degree stuff should be all over the place. could probably break a record or two. take a look at this graphic. everybody in the eastern half of the united states. with the exception of northern extreme new england. should be near unseasonably warm record temperatures. then we get rain headed our way for the weekend. mary? meresbacher was convicted of child rape back in 1995. alex demetrick reports, his appeal to get out has been strengthened by the high court's decision yesterday. >> reporter: john meresbacher last went free, repeatedly raping his student at this catholic school. >> i'm grateful he's off the street. >> 17 years later, murphy is worried that about to change. >> what we're on the verge of now is just a grave moral and legal injustice. >> reporter: it centers to an appeal by meresbacher, that his lawyer didn't tell him of a potential plea deal if he pled guilty. >> he has already been in prison over 10 years. that means he could be released from prison. >> reporter: it could happen. now, the court has ruled that defendants must be made aware of any plea deals. but then he would have to change his plea to guilty. >> i didn't do any of these things. and all i want is a fair trial to clear my name. >> i would like to hear john meresbacher say that he raped, brutally raped, and continually raped, 10, 11, and 12-year- olds. >> reporter: the petition to keep him in prison has over 10,000 names am including cardinal ryan, who said the abuse had an enormous impact on these people, first as children, then as adults. i fear that granting his request to be freed from custody, will cause further harm to those who have already greatly suffered. >> i am tired of being tortured by him. and i do not want to see this happen to another child. >> reporter: john meresbacher is now 70 years old. his appeal for release will be heard in federal appeals court next month. searchers bring more bodies to the wreckage in the costa concordia. vic is in the newsroom with the efforts to find it two months after the italian cruise ship crashed. >> reporter: the number of bodies discovered is brought to 30 with two still missing. the ship hit the water. divers have been combing the half-submerged ship since then. salvage teams are removing it from the ship. >> the people in southern france is now dead, after a fierce gun battle at his house. tina kraus reports for wjz. >> reporter: french commandos stood down after a deadly 32- hour standoff in toulouse. the siege ended with gunfire and explosions at the apartment of suspected killer, mohammed merra. the 23-year-old was hiding in the bathroom when police stormed his home. prosecutors say merra had several guns and opened fire on police. officers shot back, hitting him in head, as he threw himself out the window. police negotiators say in hours before his death, merra admitted to killing a teacher and three students at a jewish school this week, and murdering three french soldiers earlier this month. detectives say merra filmed the killings and was proud of them. merra, as seen in this amateur video, claimed to have links to al qaeda. he called the attacks payback for the killing of palestinian children and the french military's involvement in afghanistan. president nicolas sarkozy says an investigation is under way to see if merra had any accomplices. merra said he had traveled to afghanistan and pakistan for terrorist training. officers wanted to take him alive, but the extremists promised he would die fighting. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> and u.s. officials say merra was added to the u.s. no-fly list in 2010 after troops picked him up in afghanistan. he was briefly detained and then returned to france. breaking news about the deaths of whitney -- death of whitney houston. a coroner rules the singer and actress died from drowning and heart disease. and signs of cocaine use were found had her system. we'll bring you more information as it becomes available. a frightening helicopter crash is caught on tape in afghanistan. the american apache helicopter appears to land too quickly and slams into the snow on the ground. the helicopter flips and its props are flinging across. miraculously, no one on the ground was hurt. the u.s. army is investigating the cause. a u.s. marine faces punishment for his critical remarks of president obama. on facebook. camp pendleton marine stein started a paged called armed forces tea party. on it, he called the reporter: it's like finding 70% of the human remains. so that helped a whole lot of the families actually get closure. >> reporter: 9/11 was red's first search. today, she's one of the last 9/11 search and rescue dogs still alive. she retired last summer, due to severe arthritis. >> it would be nice if her arthritis, if she felt better that she listen -- okay. i'm crying. >> reporter: heather did some research and found that there's an animal hospital in northern virginia that does breakthrough stem cell therapy for dogs. >> reporter: the burke animal clinic is just one of a few animals across the country that use stem cell therapy. the vets harvest one to two, activates the stem cells and reinjects them back into the troubled areas. >> i've got about 28 dogs. and of those dogs, we've had about 75 to 80% of them had gone very well. >> reporter: the vet's own dog has had stem cell treatment and is doing well. >> hopefully within about two or three months, she'll be more has been struck. apparently a child was hit by a car, outside of a chinese restaurant and strip mall. apparently there is some injury to the child's leg. you see paramedics here working on him, getting on the back board. they're going to take him to an ambulance and then to the hospital. it's not clear how serious has injuries are. he appears to be conscious at this time. but you see they're working pretty strenuously to get him out of the road. there is a large crowd here. police do have fayette street closed in both directions. it's going to be just east of north highland street. so expect delays in the area. back to you on tv hill. >> all right. captain mike. thank you. the fbi confirms that a woman found in north dakota, the remains found, are those of a missing montana teacher. 43-year-old sherry arnold, disappeared while jogging in january. her body was found about 50 miles from where she worked. the fbi did not reveal what led them to the location. 23-year-old michael spell, and 48-year-old lester van waters have pled not guilty to aggravated kidnapping in the case and are awaiting trial. an incredible revelation about a soccer player who collapsed during a game in england. doctors are now saying, fabris muama was essentially dead for about 78 minutes before his heart started beating again. paramedics used a defibrillator to shock him 15 times after he went into cardiac arrest during a match last saturday. he's still in intensive care, in serious condition. but he is responding to questions. preparations are under way for pope benedict's visit to mexico. as monica villa miczar reports, many hope his arrival tomorrow will raise the spirits of a nation in turmoil. >> reporter: workers are cutting the grass, sweeping the streets and putting up barricades. last-minute touches to welcome the pope. truckloads of army and police are also trickling in, to protect pope benedict xvi. the country is in the middle of a drug crisis. the violence has killed nearly 50,000 people in the past six years. the pope says he is traveling to mexico to support its people. >> it's going to bring us -- help us bring peace of mind. and we need that, especially with all of the violence that has been going on in mexico. >> reporter: the entire historic district around the cathedral will be closed off to traffic during the pope's visit. 3 million followers from around the world are coming here to see him. one of the pontiff's goals is to bring catholics back. mexico has one of the largest catholic populations in the world. but it's losing members to less structured christian groups, including evangelicals. peter mary says there is a disconnect between the catholic church and the problems catholics face. >> do you think they're worried? >> i think. they seem to be reacting to the change. but you can't -- you can't hold people down. you can't. and it's with traditions. or you can't hold people down with doing what you tell them to do. >> obviously is the orioles' most accomplished player. he's been with the team the longest. but his stardom has faded because of concussion symptoms that have caused him to miss most of the past season. persistent headaches, dizziness. and aversion to bright lights. among the ailments that keep him from going full speed. but this week, he has been taking part in team drills. and i spoke to his teammates who sympathize with him. he believes he is going to play this year. but when he speaks of his condition, the tough part is not knowing when he'll be at full strength. >> with this, there is no time line as you said. and that's hard mentally, as much as anything. that you know, they can't tell you in six weeks you're going to be ready to go. >> to observe that. how does that strike you? >> it's hard. it's been great. because he's been able to be on the team and having him around, he's got a great personality. so hopefully he gets better out there. and we can have him hitting leadoff for us. >> it's scary. it's something you don't want to miss around. it's something you have to be cautious with. and we're all hoping for the best for him. >> reporter: now, at this point, it's considered progress that roberts isn't even able to watch the games from the dugout. there is no set plan for him at this time to play in the spring training game. birds were big winners over the
