control, with more on the delays being caused by this accident. sharon? >> reporter: hi there, kai. good afternoon, everyone. as you can imagine, there are pretty big delays. good news is, not only is the left shoulder open. we saw on the traffic camera, that the left lane is open now. right now, they have also opened the left tube of the fort mchenry tunnel. they have both because they were detouring traffic because of this. at this point, the left tube is open. the right tube remains closed. and you're also looking at a left lane and right shoulder opening. traffic is starting to move, south of the beltway, a little better than it was. at this point, you are still going to slow down there. and you are going to stay extremely slow, once you get to o'donnell street. but the good news is that some traffic is getting by. there was a 31-minute delay on 895 with bailout traffic there, from 295 to the harbor tunnel. we'll give you another update in about 10 minutes. back to you. >> sharon gibala, reporting live. wjz will continue to update this accident as more details become available. new fallout from the firing of a baltimore police officer, at the center of a scandal, caught on tape. they fired him after his confrontation with a skateboarder became an internet sensation. that has the police union fired up. wjz is live at the fraternal order of police. mike hellgren has their harsh words for the commissioner and the skateboarder's mom tonight. >> the f.o.p. says pollicks are involved. -- politics are involved. they believe the commissioner abused his position of power. also, the skateboarder's mom believes the firing was the right thing for the commissioner to do. and that officer needs some anger management training. >> sit down. sit down, i'm not a dude! >> support is building for salvatore rivieri, the baltimore police officer seen in this infamous confrontation with a skateboarder at the inner harbor. the commissioner fired him for the rant, in a rare move, going against a disciplinary panel's recommendation to suspend him. it has outraged many in greektown, where officer rivery has been on patrol. >> he is the security blanket for a lot of the residents here. and a lot of calls we get, they want answers. why is he gone? and frankly, we don't have answers for him. >> everyones him on a first- name basis. i think we are cheated. >> reporter: that disciplinary board only found the officer guilty of not filling out the proper paperwork, and cleared him of using excessive force. the police union says they will appeal the commissioner's decision. >> we feel very strongly that the decision of the police commissioner is an abuse of his discretion. >> in my 30 years of dealing with the police department, this is the first officer that i'm aware of, who has been terminated for not writing a police report. >> it appears it may be a signal of the commissioner, caving in to political and community pressure. >> the mother of the skateboarder believes the punishment is just. >> he needs to go back and see how eric and i felt three years ago when he did what he did to eric bush. he should be fired. this guy has an anger management problem and should not be on the police force. >> you disrespected me, this badge and my department. you understand me? when i'm talking to you, you shut your mouth. >> reporter: officer rivieri was just shy of retiring and will lose his pension, if the commissioner's decision is not overturned. >> and the fraternal order of police said that took a few minutes. they wouldn't reveal what reason, commissioner bealefeld gave for firing officer rivieri. and the commissioner, as we have told you, is not talking about this tonight, saying it is a personnel matter and he wishes to over the comments by the police union. a community in shock. an armed suspect on the run right now. an extensive search for the man police say forced his way inside a baltimore county home and stole several weapons. wjz is live in towson. weijia jiang has more on the search and reaction from the neighborhood. weijia? >> reporter: police say wherever the suspect is tonight, there could be a threat. because one of those weapons is a live hand grenade. >> reporter: authorities say 32- year-old lavar rich is on the run, armed with a wild range of stolen weapons. >> approximately six handguns, an sks assault rifle, and a hand grenade. >> reporter: investigators say on august 19th, rich, who goes by maurice, blasted into a home on the 6800 block of west ridge road in pikesville. demanding guns and cash from the man who lived there. report says rich tied him up and beat him with a gun, threatening, quote, if you call police, we will come back and kill you. >> know the people. just was in shock. >> reporter: though rich got away, police arrested clifford johnson, who they say invaded the home. they believe the mom supplied transportation. >> police say one of the women they arrested is a prostitute known as "delicious." charging documents reveal delicious asked him to run her aback. but then she got hold of the male suspects to tell them exactly when to strike. >> there are other people who knew he had firearms in his home. >> reporter: the burning question for neighbors, what were they even doing in a home in a community filled with kids? police are still investigating. >> a gun that is locked up that you have a key to protect yourself. i think that's fine. but as far as having all of those rifles, like you're going to war, oh, no. huh-uh. >> reporter: police say rich has it all now, and they're pleading with the public for tips to find him. >> rich is about 6'2," 170 pounds. and say he could have a goatee or beard. they say any problems should be south monroe street. sky eye chopper 13 was over the scene moments ago. that's when an mtsa -- mta bus hit it. the driver of the minivan was given a traffic citation. attack in broad daylight. vic has details. the suspect in this case made off with a treasured memento, the victim's engagement ring. city police say the couple was walking in roland park. that's when the man approached them, saying, quote, give it up, where is the money? the couple handed over cash, a purse with a diamond ring inside of it, and a pair of ear rings. police say they do have leads that will catch the person responsible. >> the couple is not hurt in the robbery. an attack in new york city is gaining national attention tonight. police are calling it a hate crime, after a young man attacked a muslim cab driver. alison harmelin reports for wjz, that the attack comes during protests over a planned islamic community center blocks from ground zero. >> reporter: cab driver ahmed shariff got a strong show of support from new york city mayor, michael bloomberg. just two days ago, shariff was slashed in the face, arms and throat, apparently because he is a muslim. he had just picked up 21-year- old michael enwright in his cab. >> and he asked me. then he told me [ speaking in foreign whrng ] >> after that traditional islamic greeting, he says enwright lunged. >> like this. >> enwright is charged with a hate crime. police say he was drunk. he was taken for a psychiatric evaluation. >> right now, he's terrified. we're going to try to gather as much information as possible and go from there. >> reporter: there was no sign of hate in his background. enwright helped out in afghanistan and belonged to a group that promotes interfaith understanding. >> there has been strong backlash. >> more than 70% of americans say they oppose it. emotions run high, but the protests have been peaceful. the outburst of violence stunned new york's muslim community. >> you cannot hate me because i'm muslim. i didn't do anything to you. >> reporter: mayor bloomberg says the attack goes against everything new yorkers believe in. alison harmelin, cbs news, new york. >> the accused slasher is being held without bail. if convicted, he could face up to 25 year in prison. a little encouraging news about the economy tonight. a new request for unemployment benefits fell for the first time in four weeks. the labor department says claims dropped by 31,000 to 473,000. the claims remain much higher than they would be in a healthier economy. employers are more reluctant to hire. the jobless claims report helps them stock up more in trading. but the dow eventually slipped below 10,000. s&p down 8. nasdaq down 23. sunshine and clear skies are back. a live look outside now. we hope the weather will stick around. wjz is live. meteorologist tim williams, updating our forecast. and has a look at the two systems churning in the atlantic. >> definitely, all of the weather activity weatherwise is far away from us. that's the good thing. danielle is the first storm we started monitoring. that is a category 2 hurricane. as of the 5:00 update, from the national hurricane center, with sustained winds of 110 miles per hour. this is still to the northwest. expected to intensify to a category 3 storm. but expected also to make a sweeping right turn up to the north atlantic, where it should weaken. it could present a few issues for us. we'll talk about that here in just a few seconds. as for earl, which is a tropical storm. earl has the same winds of 46 miles per hour, moving to the west/northwest. taking a little bit of a southerly route. and could impact areas down around the bahamas. but it's still way too far out to tell. and it's going to be right around monday or tuesday, before we start to have a better idea, as to whether or not that one will intensify to category 1 or 2 status, as far as hurricane strength is concerned. as far as saturday and sunday, into the beaches. while danielle stays far enough out to sea, that it does not impact the mainland drght directly, swells could reach the coast. anyone heading down to ocean city t. heading to the delaware beaches or the jersey shore. there could be a situation in the jersey shore. has nothing to do with the reality show. we'll talk about that coming up, as far as our local weather. we have nothing but severe clear, as kai mentioned. we'll talk about that in just a few moments. kai? a family is worried tonight. their horse barn burns to the ground, just weeks after they were threatened. the fire department is trying to determine a cause. >> the hay is still smoldering in monkton. the husband and wife who own camelot farms were awakeeped at 4:00 a.m. >> i noticed the door was closed. and i tried to open it. and with that, it was so hot, it singed my hair. and i knew that if they were in there, they wouldn't be alive. >> but three hours after the fire began, the two horses were discovered wandering. >> could they have gotten out themselves? >> no. absolutely not. >> the barn doors were closed. and they were out of the barp with -- barn with no injuries, no marks on them, from soot or anything. >> the fire department says it is trying to determine if the cause of the fire is arson. because the family says they've recently been threatened. nancy's husband phil says a man drove up a private road on a private motorcycle, 4:15 in the morning. revving his engine and shouting expletives. >> i approached him right here, outside of the house. and he stopped. and he looked forwards me. didn't take his helmet off. and he made his statement toward us. >> what did he say exactly? >> he said, you rich [ bleep ] are going to pay. >> the family says they don't recognize the person who was wearing a helmet. they filed a police report. >> the same family filed this report. and someone had defaced the sign and stolen a horse trailer here. >> the trailer was found dumped near a river. >> and yes, we are fearful. and yes, we've armed ourselves. >> reporter: and police and fire investigators have no idea if these incidents are related in any way. kai, back major problem on i-70 right now. sharon? >> it's a messy commute this afternoon. but we have good news, as you mentioned. all lanes open after that accident. the accident involving a tractor-trailer and a pedestrian is a fatal accident. we have all lanes shut down for several hours at this point. all lanes are getting by and they are open. traffic starting to ease as well. now, only a 6-minute delay. 895, the bailout traffic. that's starting to ease as well. 895 northbound. about a 23-minute delay. and 295. between the harbor tunnel. thou, we do have a significant problem on 70. and that is 70 eastbound. an accident there, approaching the beltway. and that is, with the hazmat situation. and has all lanes blocked. traffic backed up to 29. and because of that, they are diverting. traffic, if you approach 29, you will actually be diverted off on to 29. and we have another messy situation. we still have an accident there on the shoulder now. but you can see that is causing a backup beyond warren road. and one accident in annapolis. and that is going to be at 665. we also have typical delays, but a little worse today on the beltway 13 miles per hour. 34 on the west side. and 24 on the top side inner loop. with a 26 minute drive time. traffic is there. hurry into subway for breakfast. and try our new breakfast sandwich. like the egg white muffin melt. and a double double bacon. subway, eat fresh. >> no, hot bubbly cheese. but with all that, you'd think we have five inches of snow on the road. >> no. we didn't have this many problems during the blizzard. >> maybe a sun eventually, we'll filter into the region. it will start to gradually go up. today, we're in the mid-80s. tomorrow, we'll take a bit of a hit. and then we'll start for the weekend. we'll be in the low accident, this one on i-70. >> well, it has been a bad commute. but the good news is, all lanes opened involving that accident. and they've opened the lanes where the fort mchenry tunnel was. about a 5-minute delay now no you. you're still looking at a 20- minute delay on bailout traffic. between 295 and the harbor tunnel on 70 eastbound, there's an accident with a hazmat spill there. that has all laned blocked with a backup to 29. and that is forcing traffic to be detoured on 29 there. a big mess there as well. baltimore pike would be your best bet there. he arrived at the hospital without a pulse. allen weller was essentially dead. but they gave it one last shot and brought weller back to life. >> there were no signs of life in allen william ler. doctors saw a horrible rupture in his aorta. but before they could fix that, they had to bring him back to life. allen had no heartbeat, no pulse. it was a desperate situation. >> we pushed it up into your aorta, above where it had ruptured. and once it was in position. we blew it up, using liquid, as you see here. >> dr. raga, chief of vascular surgery, performed a stop-gap measure. that worked. >> we put this balloon in, above the rupture that slowed down the bleeding. and he developed the blood pressure. and that's when i said, well, he's got a blood pressure. we have to at least try. >> surgery was a success. allen's aorta was repaired. he knows just how lucky he is to be alive. two out of three people in his situation die, even before they get to the hospital. >> this guy right there. grabbed me out. gave me new life. thank you, man. >> it was nice taking care of you. >> now, both patient and doctor are on a mission to educate men over 55 who have smoked. about routine screening for aortic aneurysm. >> we much rather done it before his aneurysm ruptured. >> if they can get it,id would get it done. once you have had an aneurysm, most of the time, it's over with. >> but not for allen. he is going home today. >> and allen spent time recovering. doctors say he will be able to return to normal activity in about a month. suspected in 18 attacks tonight an accused stabber is facing charges. jessic has details. authorities say five of the attacks were accused of, were deadly. the 13-year-old arrived in michigan today. and is being held without bond. investigators have linked him to 14 attacks in the flynn area. he was captured in atlanta in august. moments before boarding a flight to israel. he is also the suspect in four stabbings in ohio and virginia. abuulizam is only charged for an attempted murder in flint. other charges are expected. >> he grew up in israel. he was the suspect in a screwdriver stabbing there, earlier this year. former illinois governor rod blagojevich's trial will not include his brother as a codefendant. charges were dismissed against robert blagojevich. federal prosecutors say he played a less central role in the scheme to sell barack obama's old senate seat. a jury deadlocked on the counts against the brothers. the retrial was scheduled to begin the week of january 24th. the angeles name is known for ownership of the baltimore orioles. now, peter angelos will see his parents' name on the law center. political reporter pat warip has more on what this means for the city. >> something maryland educators, lawmakers and baseball team owner have in common. the construction of a new university of baltimore law center. this is the site at mount royal in charles near the jfx. you can see penn station way in the back. it's considered a bright spot in a low to work with people who are of the city, for the city. and that's what these graduates are all about. >> the construction cost is $107 million, primarily state funded with $15 million in private later details. a new look tonight at how many americans are struggling to keep their homes out of foreclosure? one in 10 homeowners with mortgages are in danger of foreclosure. that happened this summer. more than 2 million people have lost their homes since the recession began. and analysts say higher unemployment has meant more people are struggling to make mortgage payments. another major recall tonight for toyota. over 1 million corolla and matrix models. the engines can reportedly stall without warning at any speed and fail to restart. three accidents have been linked to this problem over the past year, toyota has recalled more than 10 million vehicles for a variety of issues. after one city school closed its doors, another has opened. and today, brand new green street academy had a makeover. in this wjz school watch report, andrea fujii explains the unique goals they have for their students. a fresh coat of paint for an old building. but new schools. in jub, west baltimore middle school closed because of low enrollment. monday, green street academy will open at the same site for nearly 2006th and 7th graders, with a clear objective. >> we needed to have a school that was focused on pathways for students. >> nearly 60 volunteers from school stackulty and the home the home depot, are refurbishing the facility. >> aesthetically, coming into someplace that is appealing, makes it a lot better for the kids to come in. a little more positive attitude. >> a principal says they'll provide project-based learning that teaches students about the environment. for example, some students came early and built this koi pond from scratch. now, they can continually study this sustainable habitat. >> we wanted students to be actually using their hands to apply the skills that they've learned. we think that learning by doing is the best way kids learn. >> cory nivens has high hopes for his eldest sons who will be a student here. >> he loves science. he helped plans to grow one grade level each year. so by 2015, they'll educate 6th through 12th graders. in tonight's wjz healthwatch report, researchers think they know why type 2 diabetes can increase the risk of alzheimer's disease. according to scientists, alzheimer's is caused by a buildup of plaque in the brain. a new study found diabetics with insulin resistance, are more likely to develop those plaques. they will see if there is a link between the lack of insulin. and there are new health worries about bpa, the chemical commonly used in plastic food and drink containers. a new study finds european men with a higher expez poure -- exposure had slightly higher levels of testosterone. the chemical can have an effect on hormone levels. certain countries have moved to ban bpa in products, including baby bottles. time now for a look at the baltimore sun. more and more companies are steering away from using animals to test the safety of drugs and struct products. a look ahead at this weekend's comic con. at the convention center. and a look at the new movies. remember to look for the updated forecast from wjz's first warning weather team. the monocacy battle in frederick is an important touchstone in the civil war. but the roots of that war are being unearth the. archaeologists are finding evidence of a slave plantation, very rchtd different from the kind usually found in maryland. a french family built this house in 1798. unlike most plantations, the family kept its flames in front of the house. a lot of slaves. >> by 1800, they had 90 enslaved laborers in their possession. which made them the second largest in frederick county at that time and the largest in the state of maryland. >> and the national park service found and is currently excavating on the monocacy battlefield. what is being found are fragments of simple items. >> oyster shells, brick, mortar, iron hardware, nails, tobacco pipe fragments, buttons. just about anything you can imagine that would be the as a result of as many as 90 people living in one place for 30 years. >> reporter: it wasn't just a large number of slaves the french family owned that set them apart. it was the way they treated them. >> apparently the treatment of people was something very extreme for people in this area. >> reporter: they remarked on stocks. and a torture device. and a whipping post. and there are records of criminal charges against the family. >> the charges range from different kinds of cruel and unmerciful beatings. also one charge are not providing proper food and clothing for their enslaved people. >> it might have brought the cruelty of caribbean slavery with them. their bondage inferred in the pieces of a hard life, even by the standards of a slave state. alexalex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> no human remains have been found in the dig. and none is expected. in frederick county, a number of slave cemeteries were established away from these. a man was killed when he was hit by a tractor-trailer on the northbound side of i-95. wjz is live just off 95. mike schuh has the latest for us. traffic is getting by live on northbound 95. the entire roadway was closed. for some reason, there was a pedestrian up on this stretch of roadway. he was run over by a semi, from the national trucking firm schneider. investigators were on the scene. they won't say if the man left a disabled car that was seen nearby. down i-95. reports indicate that the man was pinned underneath the truck and was dead on the scene. police did say the decease said was not a construction worker. the accident investigators have spent the afternoon, trying to determine what has happened. right now, i-95 is open and looks to be flowing pretty well past the scene of the accident. reporting live, to stay out of the water. they said that recent tests of the water, ocean front from 8th street to 22nd street, show a level of bacteria, since that is higher than the state's standards allows. it puts you at increased risk for stomach, skin, eye, and respiratory infection. paul hogan, known as crocodile dundee, has been barred from leaving his native country, because of a disputed $35 million tax bill. hogan, who resides in los angeles, was served with the order, while attending his mom's funeral in australia. they claim he used offshore accounts to shield his income. put that on the
