yet been determined. she did have some facial fractures. a bone fracture. >> reporter: neighbors say richards did not have a job before this happened. police don't believe he had an accomplice. and they say the only motive is robbery. >> that's devastating. that's awful to think someone would go so far as to take another person's life that lives next door. >> i was there on the scene. i was one of the first members of the families to arrive. she died of a very tragic death. and she did not deserve it. >> reporter: the family shared a snapshot of her life with mourners. robinson was a mom, a grandmother, a widow, who worked at several hospitals before retiring a few years back. >> we both came from north carolina. and we called each other homegirls. >> she was a good friend. very nice, beautiful person. >> reporter: flowers now sit next to the windows of her boarded home. now this tight-knit neighborhood is trying to heal from this vicious crime. >> reporter: and police wouldn't reveal what led them to richards. they arrested him last night. he had no prior criminal record. mary? >> such a sad story, mike. thank you. robinson was just 61 years old. a mystery in howard county tonight after construction workers find a body. crews found the body of michael thomas cobb in the woods yesterday. police used his fingerprints to identify him. cobb's family told investigators he was last seen august 12th. police do not suspect foul play, but an investigation into the death continues. a 10-year-old boy is the latest victim in violence in baltimore city. he was hit by a bullet, while inside his east baltimore home. and tonight, police say they are still searching for the gunman. wjz is live at city police headquarters. gigi barnett has details of this investigation and an update on the child's condition for us. gigi? >> reporter: well, mary, so far, that child's condition is good. he was released from the hospital today. police are convassing -- canvassing his neighborhood. looking for the victim and the suspect who shot him. >> betty is reminded of the violence she saw and heard inside her home. it happened when her family was having dinner. >> we just heard these gunshots. pow, pow, pow, pow, pow. >> reporter: coleman said someone opened her front door on north lakewood avenue around 10:00 p.m. and opened fire. one of the bullets struck her grandson. 10-year-old tevian. >> next thing i know, tevian comes up. he said, mama, i've been shot. i've been shot. i said, no, you haven't. >> reporter: until he showed her his hand. >> that's when he held his arms up. and there's a big hole in his arm, and blood just running. by this time, i done lost it. i done lost it. >> we're trying to figure out if these acts of violence are related. >> reporter: police say it's the latest in a string of violence. now, the government is promising a crackdown. it begins with commanders hitting the streets. using plain clothed officers to catch up with suspects. >> it is frustrating, right? time after time, we're sitting before the podium, or behind microphones, with another life taken by gun violence. it does get tiring to have to do that. but we're getting better. >> reporter: see -- so far in baltimore, detectives have tracked 267 shootings this year. and the total number of shootings, facial and -- fatal and nonfatal is more than 200. for tevian, those numbers have struck home. >> feel like the [ inaudible ] >> reporter: and police officers say they are trying to reassure tevian that they are searching for the suspect in his particular case. meanwhile, in the city, there have been at least 400 shootings so far, whether they were fatal or nonfatal this year. the number of shootings, compared to the same time last year, is actually down. back to you on tv hill. >> and we have one more statistic for our viewers. there were 14 homicides in the city just last month. killed while trying to run to safety. a glen burnie 7-eleven clerk gunned down during a robbery, and tonight, police hope someone will recognize the men responsible. suzanne collins is in the newsroom with the just-released surveillance photos. >> reporter: anyone with information in this case could be eligible for a reward of up to $15,000. these are surveillance photos from inside the store. three suspects enter the store on august 9th and demanded cash. the store's clerk, yuceph atia, was shot and killed, while trying to run away. one of the suspects was carrying a black, nike backpack. after the shooting, they were all seen headed north on marley boulevard. >> thank you, suzanne. if you have information about this case, you are asked to call police. again, you could be eligible for a reward of up to $15,000. the first cases of the west nile virus have been diagnosed in maryland. the state health department says a baltimore county adult and a montgomery county senior are infected. >> the west nile virus is carried and transmitted to people by infected mosquitoes. maryland has now confirmed its first cases in the season. one in baltimore county, the other in montgomery county. >> west nile virus is a problem because it's a disease that can be relatively mild, or it can lead to death. it can be very serious. fortunately, here in maryland, we have few cases. these are the first two cases this year. >> reporter: symptoms usually appear three to 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. symptoms include fever, headache, rash and swollen lymph glands. >> health experts say it has become a problem. and while the risk is low, they encourage people to use precautions. >> reporter: get rid of standing water around your home. cover your legs and arms at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes areute the most. and using bug repellent. so far, 1200 have been tested for the virus in maryland this year. but only one in anne arundel county has tested positive. >> the risk for west nile virus will continue throughout the mosquito season. this is primarily until the first frost when the mosquitoes die off. you need to be vigilant. watch out for mosquitoes, protect yourself, keep your environment free of mosquitoes, certainly until the first frost. don't let your guard down. >> west nile virus surfaced in maryland a decade ago. and several people have died from a severe form of it. >> we have breaking news right now, on the westbound side of the bay bridge. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene of the accident, involving a tractor-trailer. captain mike perry has more for us. mike? >> reporter: yeah, this is a real bad accident, denise. this is the westbound span of the chesapeake bay bridge on the anne arundel county side. near the toll plaza. there's about a four-mile backup from the eastern shore to the western shore. apparently the tractor-trailer rear-ended, then drove the car into the side rail of the bray bridge, causing the driver to be significantly and heavily trapped inside the vehicle. now, we do have a maryland state police medivac helicopter en route to sandy state park. they will be landing there and awaiting the rescue of the person inside the motorcycle which is trapped. we don't know about any injuries to anyone else here, the driver of the tractor- trailer, et cetera. we'll continue to monitor this situation and keep you updated. but we can tell you for certain that the westbound span of the chesapeake bay bridge, from the eastern shore to over at the toll plaza -- the -- on the western side, closed in its entirety as this rescue continues. maryland transportation authority police are en route. and you can see, anne arundel and queen anne's fire are on the way. >> thank you. new insight into what caused the freight train derailment. the accident happened on august 5th. a csx transportation spokesman says there is no doubt that a broken rail caused 13 cars to jump the tracks. no one was hurt. the track will now be replaced around labor day. in 2001, a more serious derailment led to a chemical fire that disrupted downtown baltimore for a week. maryland health officials report seven more heat-related deaths this summer. the total so far this year is now 26. all but one of the victims had underlying health problems that contributed to their death. well, let's take a live look outside on this friday evening. another day with temperatures back in the low 90s. but there's no rain. and it's not that humid, i guess. we'll find out. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. meteorologist bernadette woods and meteorologist tim williams are updating your forecast. >> denise, you're right. the humidity is down a little bit. yes, it's warm out there. it's 90 degrees. but the thing is, you can get some relief if you head into the shade. you can't even get that relief. that's one of those really high dew points and humidity. here's how it looks. when we open everything up, you can see something going -- nothing going on. the next storm system is out to the west. and that's where there are a lot of thunderstorms and how all of this is going to play into our forecast. here's tim in the outback. tim? [ laughter ] >> no, i'll miss my children. but time to go back to school. still ahead on wjz's eyewitness news at 5:00. busted, a modern day bonnie and clyde. how agents tracked them down. worried about contaminated eggs. now, millions more recalled. i'm alex demetrick. coming up, a small force with a big job. that story as eyewitness news continues. and a serious accident on the bay bridge. right now, sky eye chopper 13 remains on the scene in anne arundel county. we'll have an update on this breaking news in a few moments. ,,,, narrator: a local entrepreneur had an idea for a new neighborhood business. and with help from small business loans sponsored by governor martin o'malley, arrow bicycle shop opened its doors in 2008. this governor gets it. it's our job to give maryland businesses the tools they need to grow and create jobs. narrator: now, arrow bicycle shop is making main street stronger... selling bikes and creating new jobs. o'malley understands what a business like mine needed to get started. narrator: martin o'malley. moving maryland forward. we continue to follow that breaking news on the bay bridge. wjz has complete coverage with sharon gibala and captain mike perry. let's start with captain mike perry over the scene of the accident. mike? >> reporter: this is a very, very serious collision. this is actually on the westbound span of the bay bridge. it occurred about 15 minutes ago. this is going to be on the sandy point side, westbound span, a tractor-trailer has collided with a car, causing a heavy rescue to the operator of the vehicle -- of the car. as you can see, firefighters, a number of them, are standing around the outside of this car, which was crushed on the front and back. apparently after being struck by the truck, it was pushed into one of the guardrails on the westbound span, causing the driver to be trapped inside that vehicle. maryland state police medivac helicopter trooper 1, out of mark state airport has just landed on the westbound span. there are a number on anne arundel county and queen anne's county. fire units on the scene for this heavy rescue. most importantly, what it has done is explos closed -- is closed the eastbound span of the bay bridge. there is about three miles of traffic just sitting on the bridge. and there is also a delay on the eastbound span of the bay bridge. as can you see, they normally would run two-way operations. would run three lanes eastbound. but now, only two lanes are going eastbound. and there is at least a mile or two backup on the westbound side. [ inaudible ] keep you updated as we continue to gather information. >> all right. we're having a little difficult with the signal there. but captain mike perry is going to stay over the scene and keep updating us. right now, let's go to sharon gibala. she is watching the situation on the bay. >> reporter: good afternoon, everyone. it is causing quite a backup. and the unfortunate situation of that is that there isn't good backup. we can show you another perspective. there is a look at 50 at the bridge. you can see traffic coming by. if we can get the signal back, we'll show you the live picture again. again, it's 50 westbound. blocking the lanes. accident involving a tractor- trailer. a backup at this point to roman coke road. and that delay is only going to ton to grow as the bridge stays closed. medivac just arrived on the scene. hopefully when they actually take off, they'll be able to get a lane open. meantime, plenty of other problems to talk about as well, including an accident on the top side of the beltway still. that is on the outer loop at york road. it is still causing some delays there. you're also looking at another accident on the beltway. this one on the inner loop at bel air road, blocking the right lane, causing a backup there. watch for an accident, west friendship at northbound 32. another in the city. callaway. as far as delays go, 95 northbound slow. 32 to 175. five minutes there. with an average speed of 25 miles an hour. there's a look at your drive times and your speeds on the beltway. extremely slow. especially on the top side. all because of the two earlier accidents we had on york road. there again is a live picture at 50 at the bay bridge. that is the big problem. shut down at the bay bridge. expect big delays. also expect the next storm system out there. it's still pretty high out there. this is going to head out. so high pressure again tomorrow. sunny to partly cloudy skies. temperatures not all that bad. close to 90 a car collide on the westbound span of the chesapeake bay bridge. on the anne arundel county side. tractor-trailer collides with the car. drives from the rear. driving it into one of the side rails. causing the driver to be trapped inside of the passenger vehicle. now, the man was rescued by workers. hoo is now being loaded into a maryland state medivac helicopter what was landed. he will be transported to shock trauma. westbound expands now. at least 4 or 5 mile it is extending back over the canton arrows. all of these cars stranded on the bridge as the rescue attempts continue. we are told the accident will be cleared as soon as possible. but at this moment, with all of the fire apparatus here, it looks like it will be quite sometime before traffic is restored to normal. this is also affecting eastbound traffic. now they're only getting two. so the backup is well back into annapolis. back to you. >> as far as we know, only that one person is injured. is that right? >> that appears to be correct, denise. looks like the driver of the tractor-trailer is there. >> thank you, captain mike perry in sky eye chopper 13. a 12-year-old child dies riding his bike into traffic. now, his mother is using this tragedy to warn other young people to be extremely careful. suzanne collins explains, joshua blackwell was a promising young 8th grader. >> reporter: brenda white grieves, looking at photos of her 12-year-old adopted son joshua blackwell, who died on his bike yesterday. the 8th grader raced down the hill, not stopping at a stop sign. and police say he slid under a car, crossing windsor mill road. >> when i got there, they were pumping his chest. and i just fell to my knees. >> reporter: brenda white and her family adopted three boys. joshua was just 4 then. she said he had been in many foster homes and would try to get out at night. she would guard the porch and stop him. >> i would put him in my arms. and he would scream and kick and cry. and take him back in. >> but when brenda's sister and mother passed away, she has become more deeply involved with raising the boys, with a firm and loving hand. joshua's death leaves her heart broken. but she wants to speak out to other children. >> i just hope his death is not in vain and that all kids will listen to their parents, do what they say. and that when you ride your bike, to do it safely. >> reporter: joshua suffered a massive head injury. late today, police decided they will not charge the driver of the honda element, believing she was not to blame. >> reporter: when a child dies, it might get easy to get angry or want to blame someone. but brenda white says she is not doing that. she says she only felt sympathy and compassion for the driver, who witnesses say was hysterical at the time. >> my heart goes out to her. i know it was not intentional. it was something that couldn't be helped. it was an accident. >> and joshua's mother says it is a good time for kids and parents to review bike safety rules. you can find a link at wjz.com. a man suspected in the link of a homicide is arrested by baltimore county police. seanshawn patrick was taken into custody late last night. in connection with the death of donald russell. russrussell was found last night. police believe mryncza is believed to be homeless. >> they call themselves a modern-day bonnie and clyde. but after nearly a month on the run, they are finally in custody. as kendis gibson reports, the couple is being investigated for a murder that happened while they were on the run. >> america's most wanted fugitives are behind bars. >> it is finally over. >> escaped prisoner john mcclusky was at a campsite. along with his fiance and cousin. when s.w.a.t. moved in, welch grew -- drew a gun but then swapped it. >> he made a statement. i had gotten back to the tent. there was a gun there. and that he would have killed the officers involved. >> reporter: mcclusky who was in an arizona prison for attempted second-degree murder escaped last month with two are the inmates. officials say welch helped from the outside by throwing a pair of cutters to the man over the security fence. convicted murderers were eventually caught. but mcclusky and welch eluded police for three weeks. the couple is suspected in several crimes, including a double murder in new mexico. the bodies of an elderly couple were found inside a burnt-out camper. authorities say mcclusky admitted to the killings during thursday's arrest. >> he said the murder weapon is over in the tent. >> a park ranger spotted the couple's stolen car at the campsite. mcclusky even talked to the ranger. a decision he told police he regretted. >> he also stated that he should have killed the forest ranger when he had an opportunity to. >> reporter: the couple considered themselves a modern- day bonnie and clyde. investigators are now searching the campsite where they were caught, looking for evidence that connects them to any of the crimes. kendis gibson, cbs news. >> it's not clear where the fugitives traveled while on the run. authority says they looked into seven -- 700 tips from every state during the man hunt. a funeral today for the deadly plane crash in alaska. a service for lobbist bill philips was held today. stevens and three others also died in that crash last week. the group was on a fishing trip. phillips 13-year-old son willy survived. in south carolina, hundreds of mourners said their farewells to two toddlers who authorities say were killed by their mother. if the two were laid to rest in orangeburg this afternoon. they say their mother, shakwan duly, suffocated them, put them in her car and roll today over. she is now charged with two counts of murder and was not allowed out of jail today for the service. former astronaut, lisa nowak, who pleaded guilty to attacking her romantic rival, now faces an uncertain future with the navy. a panel recommended that she should be discharged from the service. the secretary of the navy will make the final decision. the rockville resident famously drove across country in disguise to confront a romantic rival at an airport. she received probation for her guilty plea. from rap stars to presidents, lingering questions tonight about whether wyclef jean can run for president of haiti. he planned to run for president of his native count row this month -- country this month. now he has to await to see if he has been approved as an eligible candidate. the final list of candidates should be released sometime today. well, tonight marks four months since at this time worst oil spill in u.s. history. now there is concern about where all of that oil is. while the government says most of the oil is already cleaned up or dispersed, scientists from the university of georgia say a large amount of oil is deep under water. but the particles are show small -- so small, they can't be seen by the naked eye. the oil is taking longer to break down because of cold water temperatures. that means the plume will linger for quite sometime. a hijacking grounds an american airlines jet for hours. tonight, authorities are looking for the person who call today in. the american airlines flight sat on the tarmac in san francisco for hours yesterday after someone called in that threat. two passengers were taken into police custody to be questioned. authorities say the two were picked at random and then later released. the fbi then determined that the phone threat was not credible. it's another sign of the tough economic times. the number of americans making hardship withdrawals from their retirement accounts has reached a 10-year high. according to fidelity investments, 62,000 borrowed from their 401k accounts. nearly half also took a hardship withdrawal last year. a need must be shown in order to qualify for the withdrawal. in healthwatch, the nationwide egg recall is expanding. manuel gallegus reports, a second farm in iowa is now recalling eggs that could be contaminated with eggs with salmonella. >> reporter: the latest egg recall comes from hillendale farms in iowa. millions of eggs are believed to be distributed since early april. they were sold under the brand names, hillandale farms and sunny meadow. there are laboratory-confirmed cases of salmonella from those eggs. >> people have to be getting sick or there has to be excessive proof of contamination before many companies will voluntarily, quote/unquote, recall their food. >> reporter: and there is another producer. wright county egg. 380 million eggs were distributed under more than a dozen different brand names. wright county has a history of environmental and worker safety violations. he now faces several lawsuits from victims of this outbreak. the eggs are being blamed for making hundreds of people sick. nebraska is the latest state to report being sick. and there may be many cases out there. >> some people think they caught a 24-hour bug and don't necessarily equate it with a food-born illness. >> salmonella can be fatal for the elderly and children. but no deaths have been blamed on this so far. just misery for victims like carol lobrato who spent months in the hospital. >> just sick of the sick -- sick. sick, sick, sick. manuel gallegus, cbs news, new york. the most common symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, than 250 officers to patrol maryland's water and public land. just here in anne arundel county alone. >> 30,000 boats out over the weekend. >> reporter: 30,000 boats just this weekend. and the number safely evacuated before the collapse. at least 2,000 people have been killed by flooding in china so far. >> a bear killed a man in ohio. and a former exotic animal trainer could face charges. police say the 24-year-old was working at sam mizolla's animal sanctuary when he was attacked. the man was rushed to a nearby hospital when he later died. police say the trainer was stripped of his license. soon found he was wanted as an assistant in baltimore. it was a rough tenure for zonin in washington. last was the worst for the redskins in decades. he is heading into his return tomorrow night. >> i suspect i'll have some -- you know, some good feelings about what those fans, how they -- what these fans do, how they support the redskins. and then, you know, some of the players. you know, i'm very fond of. >> it's going be to be very-- going to be very meaningful for him. he's a great coach. he's brought a lot to us as the ravens. and i know he gave his heart and soul for the redskins for two years. and that is kind of what is t is all -- what it is all about. he's meant so much for our quarterback and our team. >> now, zorin was replaced by mike shanahan. and that continues. the redskins revolving door of coaches. they have had seven coaches in 10 years. rank -- ravens play at washington tomorrow night. and it is just a preseason game. they will keep score. though it doesn't really matter. there are things to look for. namely, who is going to be the team's kicker this year. shane graham was signed. neither has really separated themselves in the fight to become the ravens kicker. also look at the linebackers for some competition there. jameel mcclain. those guys. jameel mcclain, javaris. and all fighting to get that inside linebackers job. there is plenty of competition. there
