[ applause ] our win comes thanks to each and every one of you who voted for me. with all of the hard work, all of the long hours we put in during baltimore's hottest summer on record. all of that was the easy part. the tough part making baltimore safe, starts now. i ran to make a difference. and that difference begins by working together with my criminal justice partners to make good cases against bad people. to make what already works, work better and to find new solutions to things that aren't working. to challenge the status quo in which our criminal justice system is gained. and to do these things with tranparency and accountability. to the citizens of baltimore, each and every one of you whom it is our duty to protect. this is going to be tough. and it's not going to happen overnight. you have been listening to the acceptance of victory speech by greg bernstein baltimore new state's attorney. after jessamy conceded defeat. we ask you to stay tuned. and of course, mr. bernstein is the democratic nominee for baltimore state's attorney. and in fair condition. as more emerges about the suicide that locked the hospital down yesterday. mike hellgren has more. gigi barnett looks alt this. >> wjz is learning new information about this gunman. his brother says he felt somewhat to blame for his mother's health problems. but at this point, we have no reason to believe there was any warning sign that he may have snapped. >> reporter: police do not believe paul partis, the man who terrorized johns hopkins hospital, planned ahead of time to shoot his elderly mother and her doctor. >> no one has warned me of premeditation. i don't know -- we don't know yet if it was in his daily routine, coming and visiting with his mother that he always had that gun. >> reporter: investigators say he was distraught over her prognosis and used a semi automatic. before killing his mom and himself. very, very small weapon. the who will thing could be concealed in the palm of your whole hand. >> he had a permit to conceal weapons. >> partis lived with his mother in this home in arlington, virginia his brother said he would make the drive to johns hopkins almost daily, where she was receiving treatment for cancer. >> and i guess he thought that she was suffering a lot. and that she wasn't going to be able to walk again. the fbi is helping to investigate warning signs. i think it all happened very quickly. i think based on what we've seen in the crime scene. based on how the evacuation of the doctor played out. >> he just wanted to stay with her and be with her. >> employees were rattled but ready to get back to work after the lockdown. >> i didn't want it to end like it did. you never want to see anybody get killed. now, the commissioner said his own mother was getting treatment after suffering a stroke ask she was here at the hospital. meaning no one should be concerned about the treatment. gigi barnett has more on the security of the hospital that is charged with keeping thousands of people safe each day. doctors, nurses and staff received a minute to minute update. as to exactly what was going on and police progress. they say it's one reason they feel safe today. as they swarmed the 8th floor of the johns hopkins building yesterday, visitors and workers watched and worried. >> it's like totally unexpected. you come to the hospital to get seen, get help or whatever. and find out somebody is putting it this way. >> after partis shot his mother's doctor, and shot her and then committed suicide. how well can officers respond? with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. vic is off today. here's what people are talking about. controversial cancer drugs. in today's healthwatch report, many people say avistan saved their lives. while others say it hasn't done them any good. sandra hughes reports for wjz, the fda may end up pulling it off the market. >> reporter: christy turnage may have end stage breast cancer. but the mother of four isn't at the end of her life, saying she finished the cancer treatment avastin. >> this has truly given me my life back. >> avastin has been used successfully in colon and lung cancer patients. and in 2008, the fda gave temporary approval. it works by cutting off a tumor's blood supply. but recent studies showed it wasn't effective in most women who participated. and there were potential life- threatening side effects, like internal bleeding. >> in totality, it seemed that it did not improve the overall survival of women with breast cancer. >> reporter: in july, they recommended the approval be revoked. the fda is expected to make the final decision today. >> while research shows avastin doesn't work well in many breast cancer patients, there are doctors who say the drug drug is vital to some. >> in reality, i have patients who are being kept alive for years on the drug. >> christy believes it helped her stay alive the and that's why she's trying to get thousands to sign the petition, asking to keep the drug available to patients like her. >> i want to see my grandchildren. i want to see my daughter get married. >> if the fda decides to revoke approval, it's believed insurance companies will stop paying for the drug. sandra hughes, los angeles. >> and breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women between 15 and 54. two iowa egg farms at the center of a national outbreak of salmonella, could soon be facing a class action lawsuit. >> the lawsuit has been filed in federal court on behalf of six people who were sickened by tainted eggs. more than 1500 people got sick from eating two eggs from two iowa farms. now, more than half a billion eggs were recalled. they found two possible forms -- causes, including rodent droppings and bird infestation. >> thank you, kai. a congressional committee has scheduled a hearing on the recall next week. well, it was all a lie. the washington woman who made national headlines when she said a stranger threw acid in her face, comes clean to police. as manuel gallegus reports, some say her story didn't add up. >> reporter: bethany storro got national attention and sympathy when she first spoke from the hospital three weeks ago. >> why did this happen to me? and that i'm okay. i'm sorry. >> reporter: she claimed a black woman threw acid in her face. now, police say it was all a lie. >> from the very beginning, her story had a lot of holes and red flags. and as we developed more and more information, it was very clear that this was probably a self-inflicted act. >> reporter: investigators got a search warrant thursday, and when they confronted storro with their suspicions, she crumbled. >> during the interview, miss storro admitted that her injuries were self-inflicted. >> she could be charged with false report and fraud if she spent any of the money people donated. >> one can only wonder what her state of mind is. >> her hoax may have a real victim. a woman in arizona was burned by acid in what may have been a copycat accident. >> my initial reaction was just, it couldn't be possible. i thought, no, there's got to be some rumor out there. but i can't imagine someone doing this to themselves. >> reporter: police don't believe velarde was targeted as random. but they still don't have a suspect. manuel gallegus, cbs news, new york. >> detectives said that they were working on a way to return any money donated to storro. the mother of missing bam teen nat -- alabama teen natalee holloway, finds herself behind bars, after confronting a man who is the prime suspect in her daughter's disappearance. as kelly cobiella reports, the woman wanted answers. >> jor an van der sloot has been locked up now. charged with a brutal murder of a 21-year-old peruvian mother, stephany flores. according to the agents, beth holloway came face to face with him. apparently she snuck into the prison without being identified, and carrying a hidden camera. aided by a dutch tv reporter doing a special on natalie. holloway allegedly began the meeting by telling him, quote, she had no hate in her soul for him. van der sloot is said to have responded by handing his attorney's business card and saying he couldn't speak without his lawyer present. the website went further, claiming holloway asked direct questions about natalie's disappearance. but that van der sloot refused to answer. she said, she's a mother without a daughter. she's a mother who wants to bring her daughter home. >> van der sloot is charged with killing a woman in peru. the crime happened five years after holloway disappeared while on a high school trip in aruba. police need your help finding an elderly man. this was 90-year-old homer davis. he was last seen near bel air avenue, running an errand. he did not return to his home in phoenix. he was driving a white silverado chevy truck. with tags, 54v806. if you see davis or his vehicle, you're asked to call baltimore county police. just a short time ago, crews began pumping cement to permanently seal the gulf wells in gulf of mexico. there is no reason to use this along with the cement. pressure along with these wells is no longer an issue. it all started, of course, back in april when an explosion on the deep water horizon platform killed 11 workers. started the worst oil spill in u.s. history. the government estimates some of the 206 gallons of oil leaks, still in the gulf of mexico somewhere. denise, back to you. the government is investigating the cause of the explosion and the spill. scary night for many people in new york, after a severe storm rolls into the area. witnesses say a powerful storm seemed to come out of nowhere last night. weather agencies had actually issued tornado warnings for staten island and brooklyn. one person in queens was killed when a tree fell on his car. it also uprooted dozens of trees and damage said buildings -- damaged buildings. nothing like that in our area. now, the sun shining. mostly clear, beautiful, breezy afternoon. wjz has weather and traffic together. and bob is here with the updated numbers. >> by the way, they're investigating that new york storm to see whether it's straight-line winds or small tornado. there was one small tornado in ocean county new jersey, yesterday afternoon. we had strong winds up around the elkton area. right now, it's all quiet. 77 degrees. beautiful weather heading up for the weekend. as high pressure builds in. no changes. very, very comfortable conditions. and looks like it will continue into early next week. a little warmer on sunday. but tomorrow, very much like today. nice breezy. temperatures close to 80 degrees. and dry once again. let's check on the roads now with there. we have an accident on the west side at wilkens avenue. that's blocking the right-hand lane. attracting plenty of attention. as far as the west side goes, delays from 95 to wilkens avenue, about 15 minutes to get through. and southbound 95, also congestion there, as you make your approach to the beltway. that's on the southwest side. as far as accidents go, we have one to watch out for maryland. one tube will be reserved. three tubes will remain open. >> it's sunday morning. it won't cause any backup in traffic. we'll be able to get our runners safely through. no worries about any problems with either runners or traffic. >> last year was the inaugural fort mchenry tunnel run. and it raised more than $40,000 for the maryland special olympics. >> oh, it's absolutely amazing. authorities released u.s. hiker sarah shoulders -- shoreds. now, she wants them to release her fiance and the others as well. the three were arrested after hiking into unmarked border of iran. a wild scene in turkey today, after riots break out between protestors and police. >> a blast at a taxi stand injured 10 people, including six police officers in the southeastern part of the country. the clashes broke out, following a funeral, for victims of a roadside bomb that claimed 10 lives a day earlier. police had to use water blasts for those who were throwing stones at officers. jessica kartalija has more. a bore hole for an eventual rescue has reached the cavern where 33 miners have been trapped since august 5th. workers will now set a wider bit on the drill. this will require the miners themselves to help bishifting through as that hole will widen. the effort will likely take more than six weeks. but hopefully they'll be rescued much earlier than the original date. three smaller holes drilled earlier, allowed rescuers to supply the men with food, water and medical supplies, as well as lines to communicate with rescuers and relatives. big changes in the search for little kyron horman. police in portland are pulling all but two detective and one technician off the the case. instead they say they want outside law enforcement and the fbi to create the task force to continue the search for the 8- year-old. though they still are not naming her for the suspect. the investigation is focused on terry horman, kiron's stepmother. she was the last person to see the boy before the crash. an elderly man fights off would-be robbers with cleaning supplies. elizabeth owens reports a swifter sweeper made the difference. >> i was cleaning up the kitchen as i was given orders to do something. >> when his wife told him to sweep and vacuum the floor, he did just that. >> i had just stood up and turned it off. and he stepped in the door. >> graham says when he looked up. >> pointed it in such a manner that it looked real. >> he saw masked strangers standing inside his home. >> they said get down. and the only thing i could find close enough to keep him from coming any further was a sweeper. >> prodded it at him. and he broke it. then i started punching him again. and i told him you get out of my house, you sorry s.o.b. i'm going to kill you. >> caught offguard. he said he took off running from the home. >> he had to stop because he ran out of cord. investigators and a canine tracked the would-be robber down the road before losing track of him. >> i'm hoping he learned his lesson. and i'm hoping he learned it. not everybody is going to be submissive. >> besides a broken swiffer sweeper. >> prodded him to death, i guess. >> nobody else was hurt during the home invasion. speaking of the swiffer sweeper, this grandfather has an idea. >> a heavier pole with an electric cattle prod in it. >> in spartanburg county. >> i guess dust buster and swiffer sweepers are going to make a lot of extra money out of this. >> you might have guessed from his accident, that was in south carolina. i guess in this case, swiffer sweeper keeps the dust and robbers away. a curious toddler puts himself in grave danger. and it's caught on tape the child wandered in the street. a passing driver noticed the boy on the road, slowed down traffic. the toddler in the end was unharmed. but his mother is being questioned by police. miners uncovered the largest gold nugget in the county. it weighs in at over 5 ounces. estimated worth is more than $4,000. the gold nugget is on display at the new journey museum in south dakota. the specific gold content is still being protected. it's a gorgeous friday afternoon. what's in store for the afternoon? bob has your
