powder straight park as state police hoisted the teenager to the hospital. something empailed the teen after he jumped in the water. tragedy strikes a local community after a recent high school graduate and stand out athlete dies while on vacation. 18-year-old walter dines drowned in a river in portland oregon. you can't believe what happened, derrek. >> reporter: they are shocked in part because this was so sudden but also because the man was afraid of the water. 18-year-old walter dines left his mother to visit his father and relatives in portland. but tuesday he drowned after he apparently jumped into a river. fisherman pat frederick was there and tried to help. >> i stuck my pole in like this and then i threw the line in. i thought maybe i could hook him but he was already under. >> reporter: they found him in about 24 feet of water. >> reporter: dines had just graduated here in glen porny where he -- burney where he had a full scholarship. >> he had a beautiful heart. >> he had everything going for him. it really hurt me. >> reporter: his heart broken friends say they don't understand why the friend that couldn't swim would jump into a river. >> he wasn't jumping in no pool. we went to the h2o club he didn't even want water falling on him. he was scared of water. and the whole story didn't sound right to me. >> reporter: meanwhile the people at the school said they will not forget him. >> he was considered my family so i'm going to miss him. >> reporter: walter dimes was a straight a student. he was scheduled to return home on a flight today to his mother. those city leaders are saying it's not just their job. >> it's summer time and bullets are flying in baltimore. this weekend 13 shootings, 3 people killed. on memorial day weekend there were 7 murders incredible how hot it's been and this -- it's going to continue tomorrow and tomorrow looks to be the peak day of this heat wave. it will be day number 6, tomorrow we topped out at 97 degrees. 85 is the average and we're going to be way above that for the next 5 days. we're coming in at 83 right now. the dewpoints are way up to 76. even at this hour we're taking a look at the heat index because it's 86 degrees in baltimore, 90 still in dc and tomorrow the heat index itself is going to be probably between 100 and 105, so it is going to be a very hot one tomorrow. winds turning around. they are going to pick up tomorrow as another storm system comes our way. a couple of thunderstorms fizzled out as they moved farther east. tomorrow here's a storm system coming our way. now, this has been a really big storm over the middle part of the country. widespread tornado reportings. it's going to move into this very hot sticky air mass and we do have a possibility of some storms our self. we'll be here to tell you about them. the other thing going on, this front pushes off to the south on friday and when it does it's going to push down the heat a little bit. we're still looking at highs at 90. by saturday, though, this all starts to build once again. we're also watching the tropics. this system down here is not very organized but it is going to begin drifting off to the northwest. so something we'll be watching and we'll let you know about that also. out on the waters, small craft advisories go -- tomorrow right back up to 90. that was our record high on the date tomorrow. it's
