Jenners journey sharing his inner truth. For all intents and purposes i am a woman. Now ready to move the conversation forward. His personal struggle putting transgender into the spotlight now. Were going to make a difference in the world with what were doing. And the inspiration others are getting from his story. And d. C. Comics. Hollywood comes to washington for the white house Correspondents Dinner. Our t. J. Holmes on the red carpet with the stars. Why was the president so mad . Irresponsible whoa, whoa, whoa. The hilarious highlights this morning. Hey, good morning, everybody. Lets get straight to our top story, the crisis on mt. Everest. Look at this new picture of a massive avalanche touched off by that magnitude 7. 8 earthquake that hit nepal on saturday and the avalanche slammed directly into a base camp filled with climbers. So much destruction. This morning a major new aftershock. Magnitude 6. 7 setting off new avalanches. These fresh pictures of efforts to treat and rescue the wounded just heartbreaking atop the worlds highest mountain and we are now learning that two americans are among the dead. Meanwhile, in the city of kathmandu, the legendary capital of nepal, todays big aftershock creating a new round of panic in this ancient city, parts of which are leveled and where more than 2,000 people have died. Were going to get the latest now from abcs hamish macdonald. Hamish. Reporter yeah, dan, good morning. There is breaking news this morning and that is those fresh avalanches on mt. Everest triggered by that massive aftershock. There are now grave fears for large groups of climbers who are stuck on the face of mt. Everest. We now know that two americans are among the dead. And the death toll stands at well over 2,000 from this devastating earthquake. This morning, buildings buckling in nepal. A 6. 7 aftershock sending an already shaken community running. Now a race to find those buried in the rubble. The earthquake that hit the kathmandu region saturday claiming more than 2100 lives in 4 countries. That number expected to rise. Victims flooding hospitals, survivors spending the night outside fearful of the same power that brought this pole down onto a car and turned this once combleeming monument into a pile of bricks. The original magnitude 7. 8 earthquake felt by nearly 6 Million People in nepal, india, china and bangladesh. Even unleashing massive avalanches 100 miles away on mt. Everest. We had quite a big few avalanches coming down. Reporter dramatic new images show helicopters now rescuing injured climbers but others still trapped like colorado native jim davidson who is tweeting out safety updates and american ryan waters who called his friend eric larson via satellite phone. Ryan did mention that there was some triage going on. The first step is really assessing who needs to be helped immediate ly immediately. Reporter luanne freer part of a mt. Everest rescue team speaking over the phone helping to rescue those at base camp. Our team is exhausted and nervous and feeling very unsettled about whether they can get their patients out. Many of them are critically injured and need surgery. Reporter the avalanche killing 17 climbers total including at least two americans. Among them google exec Daniel Fredinburg documenting this climb along with previous voyages on his social media accounts. His former girlfriend and actress sophia bush posting im devastated and simultaneously grateful to have known and loved him. Google now helping in the search for survivors with its new person finder tool. An effort to reunite loved ones in the worst disaster to strike nepal in over 80 years. And we are now, in fact learning more about that american Dan Fredinburg who was on mt. Everest. He was there to build something called google adventure which would have been a virtual tour of the worlds tallest peak. It would have given all of us the opportunity to see this mountain on which there are now so many lives at stake. Hamish, thank you. And for perspective we do want to bring in brian dickinson, a veteran climber. Brian, i know youre joining us from seattle this morning. Thanks for joining us. Were hearing that base camps have been destroyed and a lot of the climbers supply and gear are just gone. Are they basically trapped on everest and how tough will it be as you mentioned for the rescuers to reach them . Right, so at base camp its 38 miles on foot. You can get helicopters in but the weather has been really bad and you really have to prioritize the wounded over the dead at this point. Yeah mental tough nessness is an understatement there and so many climbers are unaccounted for this morning. Is this really becoming a race against time . It is because base camp alone is at 17,500 feet, so youre at altitude, and, you know, as you get higher you cant really survive for long. You have to acclimate and, you know, typically base camp is a safe area. I mean, this this earthquake that triggered the avalanche there, you know, it was like a bomb dropping off in base camp. That just rarely happens. Youll see avalanches, you know, all around base camp but not to this magnitude. You said youve heard about the running and screaming and they dont know where to go. You do have friends scattered all over everest. Right now communication is limited. Youve heard from them but not all of them . Right. So ive heard people checking in from you know i have friends that are trapped above the ice fall right now. I have people that i know that are in base camp that really just working the medical needs right now. People on the north side which are, you know, stuck not knowing what to do because the Sherpa Community that helps out the climbers up there with reporters and climbing guides, their families, you know, theres just a huge unknown of what happened because their villages and houses are destroyed and theres just really not communication. So my friend pasang who i climbed everest with back in 2011, out of all the people i have been trying to reach i havent been able to reach so far. A lot of mental toughness in what has proved to be a worst case scenario. Brian, we do thank you for joining us this morning. Youre welcome. Dan. Paula, thank you. We turn to the other story breaking overnight. An otherwise peaceful demonstration turned violent in the streets of baltimore. Protesters angry over the death of a black man who had been in Police Custody broke shop windows and fought with police. At one point the more than 30,000 fans at a Baltimore Orioles game were told not to leave the stadium. And abcs Gloria Riviera is right there this morning. Gloria. Reporter good morning, dan. Thats right. What had been a mostly peaceful protest during the day radically changing as night fell had this city. More than 1,000 police, many of them in riot gear, full riot gear, came rushing in. More than 300 alone sent to that baseball game as the innings went on and outside dissolved into chaos. We just want justice. Reporter overnight demonstrators making good on their promise to shut down the city of baltimore. Smashing into a bank building, flipping over security vehicles in a parking garage. Roadways, transit systems locked down due to the angry crowds all going on well into the night. City officials confirming at least 12 arrests. The mayor blaming a small group of an taters calling for calm. Citing Public Safety concerns, the university of maryland baltimore ordered its students to shelter in place during the protests. A campuswide alert warning, do not leave buildings. With chairs, garbage cans and flaming bottles flying amid the clashes with Police Outside the Baltimore Orioles park at camden yards. Inside, fans told not to leave. In the ninth inning the digital scoreboard asking the crowd to remain inside the ballpark until further notice. And for the first time the twin sister of the man at the center of the unrest speaking out. Can yall please stop the violence. Freddie gray would not want this. Freddies father and mother dis not want no violence. Violence does not get justice. Reporter Fredricka Gray pleading for peace to protest the death of her brother, 25yearold freddie gray, from a spinal cord injury he suffered while in Police Custody three weeks ago. The Baltimore Police say the incident which left gray in a coma before his death is still under investigation but have suspended six officers who were involved in the now controversial arrest. At one point Police Commissioner batts went outside to address the protesters and he promised deep systematic reform within the department but Community Leaders are saying they are not finished yet, that even larger demonstrations are in store. Dan, paula. Tense times in the city of baltimore. Gloria thank you. Were going to turn it over to ron who has been tracking all the other headlines overnight. Good morning, ron. C. Heavyweights at the annual white house Correspondents Dinner. Political punch lines, they were flying. President obama playing comedian in chief. Even coming up with his own zingers, and abcs t. J. Holmes was there to tell us all about it. Good morning, t. J. I know youre still laughing, right . No, i dont know what to make of last night. Im so confused. I dont know what last night was about because in one second im talking to martha stewart, and then the next second im talking to martha raddatz. Im confused. I dont know what just happened. One second im talking to 2016 potential candidates, and then im talking to youtube stars. It was a weird mix of people in the room, but the end of the day this was really just the night that the nerds get to be the cool kids. How many of these have you done before . Overnight a starstudded event in washington. I love this. Its exciting. Isnt it . Reporter the 89th annual white house Correspondents Dinner fondly referred to as nerd prom, and i was right in the middle checking in on the annual events unique blend of political powerhouses, business moguls like donald trump. Are you going to be the one headlining on the stage at this event . Stranger things have happened. Reporter and alisters like modern familys julie bowen. Its chaos here. I kind of like it. Mr. President , thank you so much for taking time away from being on jimmy kimmel to be here. Now, okay, Cecily Strong, guys, for the most part people give her rave reviews for what she did last night. And i give her the biggest reviews because there are a couple of times that she got uncomfortable because the president wasnt laughing at her jokes. She went after the president a couple of times, in particular got on to him for not going to france. A lot of people remember he was criticized for not going after that whole Charlie Hebdo situation. She made a joke about that. He did not laugh. She got uncomfortable, she stuck with it so everybody is giving her rave reviews last night but it was my first one. A weird mix of folk those people should not be in the same room together. Its a weird mix. T. J. , we give you rave reviews. Thank you very much. Appreciate it. Great reporting capturing all the absurdity. We should say shgs somebody else was in the crowd last night abc news chief anchor George Stephanopoulos who will be hosting this week later this morning. Me and donald trump there. Huh . Yes. Who has better hair . So let me ask you this, let me ask you this before i get in trouble for that hair comment. Yeah i was going to say im not even going to follow up on that. What was your favorite moment from last night . I got to say i liked president obamas always pretty good at this. I loved his anger translator last night, keeganmichael key from comedy central. Crazy. What about our kids . What kind of stupid, shortsighted, irresponsible, boring whoa, whoa, whoa. All due respect, sir, you dont need an anger translator, you need counseling. [ laughter ] that was pretty clever. Yes. So, meanwhile, theres actually some serious campaigning going on on the other part of the country out in iowa. A group of republican president ial hopefuls appearing at a gathering of evangelicals and the candidates talked a lot about their opposition to gay marriage. I guess the question is is this risky given that the country and especially Younger Voters are increasingly in favor of gay marriage . Well, its tricky for them. I think youre right, although in iowa especially among the iowa caucus voters i mean theres strong opposition to samesex marriage there so in some ways theyre preaching to those who already believe what they believe in that form. On the other hand, you are seeing some nuance in the positions of the republican candidates. Some saying that they would attend a gay wedding or a gay wedding reception, even ted cruz who is very hard line on this issue was at a fundraiser hosted by some gay men in new york this week and talked about he wouldnt have a problem if his daughter turned out to be lesbian. The fault line after the Supreme Court makes the decision on samesex marriage, likely to come in late june. The oral arguments come before the Supreme Court on tuesday and if as the many expect, the Supreme Court validates samesex marriage, says you cant ban it in states, itll be interesting to see which republicans say, okay, thats the law of the land, now its settled and which ones continue to resist. An issue that evolved so rapidly. George stephanopoulos, we really appreciate it. I apologize for the trump hair thing, and a reminder george has a big show this morning. Dont miss his interview with peter schweizer, author of the controversial new book clinton cash and george wants to know what questions you might have. And that is a new excerpt never heard before from Diane Sawyers exclusive interview with bruce jenner revealing that he kempt his children in mind before making that bombshell disclosure about his transition and now his very public journey is helping others struggling with gender identity. So what is next for jenner and who will benefit from this candid conversation . Abcs Chris Connelly has been following this story and joins us in studio with more. Hi, chris. Good morning. Every transgender persons story is a unique one but there is nonetheless the sense that jenners words mark a tremendous time by the community as acknowledged by activists and jenner who considers in this exclusive clip along with Abcs Diane Sawyer how the first line of an eventually obituary might read. Bruce jenner, the one time olympic champion with a legacy to ponder. Bruce jenner won the decathlon. Yes. Who won the decathlon and then and then was true to himself, and thats the rest of the story. I just cant pull the curtain any longer, okay. Ive built a nice little life. I just cant again bruce lives a lie. She is not a lie. I cant do it anymore. Reporter in the aftermath of that revelation and after a lifetime of struggle, jenner is a transgender person who is now transitioning to a woman. To some in the Transgender Community, jenners disclosures are a watershed time for understanding and for acceptance. The interview has had a really important impact to look at jenner and say, thats me and maybe im going to be okay too. Reporter some are calling this the transgender moment, also led by such figures as Actress Laverne Cox from orange is the new black. I think people should remember that bruces story is just one story. My story is just one story. Reporter and jeffrey tamburs role on the show transparent. My whole life ive been 2kres dressing up like a man. Reporter all of it changing how gender identity is discussed. Genitals do not equal gender. More and more were looking at it lives in the brain. Were going to make a difference in the world with what were doing, and if the whole kardashian show and Reality Television gave me that foothold into that world to be able to go out there and really do something good, im all for it. I got no problem with that. Were certainly familiar with celebrities leveraging their fame to promote causes they espouse, but in this case jenner hoping a personal journey, a lifelong one, will bring a new kind of understanding. And there are more steps to go on his journey and hes really being explicit about the fact he wants to make a difference on this issue. Yes, he does. Chris, thank you. Appreciate it.
