All the way from the northern rockies, to iowa, through the gulf coast. And even miami will get cold tonight. Life threatening, school closing, recordbreaking cold. Thats incredibly cold air in western iowa. Youve got brutal cold everywhere you go. Its going to feel like 20, 25 degrees below zero. Reporter the scenes from our sub zero nation are stunning tonight. From zero visibility in michigan to the tundra once called ohio. It was a dont go outside day in kansas city. Chicagoans renaming their land chberia. Lake michigans steaming as temps bottomed out at a record breaking 16 below zero. The governor of illinois declaring a state of emergency. And in indiana, one day after a major snow, a state of disaster and a severe warning from the governor. If you can stay in, stay in today. Reporter records broken as far as south as texas. Look at these frozen spectacles in georgia. Atlanta today, colder that anchorage, alaska. And its brought to you by a pool of cold air sometimes referred to as the polar vortex. Many times it reaches central canada. And in this case, the jet stream bending just south enough to allow that counterclockwise spinning low to shift into the lower 48. This ice breaker working to keep the shipping lanes open. The ice here hasnt frozen this early since the 1930s. This is the stuff were breaking through right now. That ice is a foot thick. Reporter doctors say many frostbite victims, like this man in chicago, wait too long to get help. It wasnt only his feet that were the problem. He ends up having a pneumonia, as well. The red, the heat coming off this man. You see his face and neck are giving off heat. Look closely. You can see where the zipper of his jacket is losing heat. If you lose too much heat and theres a real danger of hypotherm hypothermia. You need to wear thin layers. And where a scarf under that zipper and wool or synthetic fibers. Seal off the middle part of your body. And you have images showing how frostbite begins. Yeah. This man is standing outside. He takes off his gloves. Look what happens. The heat, that orange yellow, over the course of one minute, it disappears. Thats the beginning of frostbite. His fingers losing all heat. His body is protecting himself and keeping his heat in his core for his essential organs. You cant have exposed skin in this weather. Thank you, rich besser. One of them iraq, where so many brave american troops fought to create a future. Heres terry moran on the extremists rising. Reporter fierce fighting raged on the outskirts of fallujah today. Iraqi troops blasting their way down the streets. After a decade of u. S. Led war to plant democracy in iraq, much of fallujah has now fallen to al qaeda. The terror groups infamous black flag flies openly there now. And its masked soldiers are everywhere, rpg launchers in hand. Al qaedas takeover of fallujah brings back bitter memories for americans. It was here in 2004 that u. S. Marines fought a ferocious, housetohouse battle against iraqi insurgents. More than 100 marines gave their lives to pacify the city and hundreds more were injured. Today, with american troops out of iraq, security has collapsed. And the civil war in next door syria, where al qaeda fighters are growing in strength and taking the lead among rebel forces, is now spilling over freely into iraq. The fear now is that al qaeda might actually form its own state, its own power base, within the chaos. Secretary of state kerry said this weekend the u. S.
