At the warmup and yet, another Winter Weather alert. Jacqui . Were doing pretty good out there across most of the region. 43 degrees already starting out in the freezing mark this morning. Feels like 46. 40 degrees at dulles and 43 at manassas and martinsburg at 39. Hagerstown is the cold spot at 35 degrees. Areas that are shaded may still be slick. Continue to use caution in those areas. Especially on sidewalks. But were ok downtown. We have strong blustery winds and drier conditions. Also pulling in some cooler air. That will help set the stage for the next round of wintry weather 24 hours from now. Our hourbyhour forecast shows you well make it into the mid to lower 40s. Temperatures will start to fall with diminishing winds after sundown. A refreeze will be expected with a few slick spots tomorrow morning. Then well watch the clouds increase pretty rapidly in the Morning Hours and a wintry mix albeit light should start about midday tomorrow. How long is this going to last . Is it going to be worse or not as bad as sunday . Well have the details coming up with the seven day forecast in the belfort furniture Weather Center in another few minutes. All right, jacqui. The longest serving woman in the history of congress is set to require. Maryland senator Barbara Mikulski made the announcement less than an hour ago and our Maryland Bureau chief brad bell is there live with the reason behind that announcement. I have had the honor to cover senator Barbara Mikulskis career for the entire term in the United States senate and i think this is a day that i never thought would come. This is someone who loved public service. This is her neighborhood, her home neighborhood. And this is where she said she wanted to come today to make her announcement. This is where she said she learned the values that prompted her to go into public office. But she is 78 years old. Shes got two years left in her term and she said she simply decided she wanted to spend that time fighting for her values rather than running for office. I have thought long and hard about the next two years. And i had to ask myself this question, who am i campaigning for . Am i campaigning for me or am i campaigning for my constituents . The senator points out that shes got two years left in her term and she plans to make the most of it. But this is a political bombshell in the state of maryland and you can just bet the contenders are lining up. Already, theres talk about a number of people. Seemingly, at the top of the list senator representative Chris Van Holland from Montgomery County. There is some thought it should be a senator from the d. C. Region after all these years of senators from baltimore. Representative john delany and representative donna edwards. Perhaps, governor Martin Omalley and perhaps, the former former governor on the list of those who may consider running for the United States senate. When we asked mikulski if she was going to name a successor, someone she would endorse, she said no, not going to do it. Theres a lot of talent in the state of maryland and then she joked shes sure those talented people would be telling them all about themselves in the days ahead. Brad bell abc 7 news. Moving on to the other big announcement today from the d. C. Department of fire and e. M. S. That has a new leader. Mike conneen has more on the change in leadership. Calling it a fresh start for the d. C. Mayor and e. M. S. Department Muriel Bowser announced her selection as next fire chief. Dean is 64 years old and spent 10 years as a chief in seattle, washington. He retired this winter after four decades with that department. After a couple of months, he said today, he decided he liked being busy and he wanted to get back to work. The two departments are similar in their structure, both provide fire and emergency medical responses. Now, every Department Dean said today has challenges and hell face several here in d. C. With accusations and allegations of staffing shortages, mismanaged malfunctioning equipment, delays in patient care notably death of the 77yearold cecil mills who collapsed from a heart attack outside of a d. C. Fire station and later died when firefighters didnt come to his aid despite pleas for help from bystanders. Dean said before making the much needed reform necessary for d. C. Fire, he wants to learn how and why things are done within the department. It is incumbent on me to come in and learn how they do business before i start deciding this is the way to go because different parts of the country, Different Things work very well. Thats what im here to do, learn, lead and be a part of this great organization. In july embattled fire chief kenneth elerbey stepped down. He will no longer be part of this department moving forward. Deans appointment does require the confirmation of the d. C. Council but mayor bowser said he will join the department in may with the title of interim chief. Reporting in northwest, mike conneen, abc 7 news. And mayor bowser also plans to provide an update today on the investigation into the disappearance of rudd. She was last seen one year and one day ago. Yesterday, a Prayer Service was held in honor at the Baptist Church in southeast d. C. Well to weather now, most of the region woke up to a coating of both ice and slush. Slippery roads and even sidewalks caused some concern this morning. Jeanette reyes has a check on the conditions this noon. Motorists this morning had to deal with dense fog and slick roadways once they scraped the ice off their cars and pedestrians, well, they just had to do their best to stay on their two feet. Just when virginians thought they had enough of the cold and snow many had an icy surprise waiting for them as soon as they stepped outside. The sidewalk itself remelted after i salted that. Not enjoying scraping, thats for sure. Ice replaced everything usually covered in morning dew. For many work began even before they got to the office. This manassas city teacher used her twohour delay to scrape off her car. The students need the consistency to you know stay in school as much as they can. So i would rather have a delay and have them come than not come at all. Those delays and cancellations mostly due to icy roads and dense fog in the early hours and Mother Nature burned off much of it and melted the rest before late starters could complain. Im done with the wintertime. This former mississippi resident said hes still waiting for weather to complain about. Another day at the office you know, everybody cries about how much snow and ice they have. They really need to go to a place like wisconsin, new hampshire, maine or boston. And they really can appreciate how little we actually got. Reporting in Prince William county jeanette reyes, abc 7 news. Hes got a point.
