Autria, just minutes ago i spoke with the Camp Director and he was breaking down talking to me about what happened today. This horrible tragedy. You have to know camp sonshine is a Christian Day camp in Montgomery County and its been around for decades and serves about 7,000 kids each and every year. Heres what we know happened today starting with video from our affiliate in baltimore. A group from camp sonshine took buses up to Oregon Ridge Park and they were swimming when at 12 30, lifeguards saw a 13yearold boy yelling for help. The teen who has not been identified was underwater and never resurfaced. He and all campers had passed a swimming test before entering the lake. Rescue crews found the body in about 45 feet of water. That news traveled back here to camp sonshine. Staff issued a call and an email blast notifying all parents about the horrible accident. We spoke with a father and his 17yearold son who has been going to this camp for 13 summers now. It happened that it was the 17yearolds final day. He talked about this tragedy and watching his friend pass away. He was a lively, fun he was very energetic and he was always the first one to get up and have a good time. This is a fluke thing. It wasnt because of lack of supervision or the institution isnt quality. Its something that happened and its tragic and were sad about it. Now logan and his father talking about this tragedy. Theres no news of injuries. The damage is limited to battered roofs and street flooding. Hurricane julio is next in line and its expected to weaken as it passes north of the islands on sunday, so they may have dodged another bullet there on the island.
