All of this has been taking place in the same general neighborhoodne heres a map showing some of the other main locations, in the surrounding area. We have a team of crews covering this situation right now. Thema before we check in with them, we want to get you caught up with what happened overnight. Multiple buildings were set on fire, including a b. P. Gas station, Oreilly Auto Parts, Bmo Harris Bank, jet Beauty Supply, and p. J. s supermarket. Firefighters could not get to those fires right away because thats because police say shots were being fired all across the neighborhood. Patrick at the same time as those fires, other businesses were broken into and looted. At least one car was set on fire. Three squad cars were damaged. One officer was injured when a brick was thrown at a squad car windshield. Weve learned that multiple people were arrested during all of this, overnight. As of midnight, mayor tom barrett said three people were arrested. Our crews across the neighborhood saw at least two other people also being taken into custody, in the hours afterwards. Its been a busy morning for firstresponders. Thema Milwaukee Police say they have restored order to the areas involved. Our live coverage starts with wisn 12 news nick bohr at district 3 headquarters. Nick. Nick we are in front of another fire scene here, but it looks against wrapping up. Unclear if this is related. This is the District Three Police officials in an unprecedented midnight News Conference here. It came even as fires were still burning about 10 blocks away. It started with a car fire, then a squad fire, and escalated to the b. P. Gas station thats been the site of numerous protests in recent weeks after the owners son fired shots to disperse a crowd he considered threatening. From there, the fires popped up at a nearby Oreilly Auto Parts, a Beauty Supply store, Bmo Harris Bank, and a few blocks away, a liquor store aro six building fires in all. Police say numerous shots were fired, including in the area of the responding firefighters which meant they had to stay back for a time while several of the properties burned. A squad was fired on and hit by a bullet, but no officers were in it at the time. The use of social media to get additional people to the scene, it was amazing in such a actually showed up. Nick police estimate at one point, maybe 800 demonstrators were on scene. They believe the vast majority of them came from areas outside of that general neighborhood. The demonstrators and started to head home. Police believe they have the situation now under control. Live in milwaukee, nick bohr, wisn 12 news. We are outside of the Oreilly Auto Parts new the intersection of 35th, fond du lac, and perlite. I want to show you what we are seeing this morning and what is i want to show you what it looked like when i first got out here late last night. A little before midnight. Crews were trying to get a handle on the fire, smoke filled the air and crews had their ladders extended above the building, trying to douse the flames and get it under control. It was like that for hours. The last fire engine didnt leave until right before around 3 30 a. M. Away, crews responding to another fire at the pjs supermarket. That was one of the six fires it was happening in this north side neighborhood. I spoke to a woman who grew up in that area and lived there for 20 years. She was devastated by all damage she was seeing on facebook. Im looking on facebook, just see they are tearing up the streets and doing all this damage. Like i said from the get go, it is real sad. Kids right. You have kids out here doing whatever they want to do, selling drugs, disrespecting people. Its not right. Sheldon i also saw Police Officers wearing riot gear in the area. We saw them with their protective helmets and shields. This morning, i want to point out the proximity to the fires it happened in this area. Im standing right outside of the Oreilly Auto Parts, there on the corner. The Bmo Harris Bank just down the street next to this. That is right next to the district seven Police Headquarters. Aside from a couple people that we saw being taken into Police Custody last night, i did not notice any clashes with police in the hours that i was out here. Thema sheldon, thank you. Overnight, we got an update from milwaukee mayor tom barrett and other city leaders about the efforts to get things under control. Patrick the mayor said the neighborhood where this is officers will work to make sure families are safe. We are asking every resident of this community to do everything they can to help us restore order. And that means, again parents of young people as you can see from the video, there are a lot of young people congregate in. If you love your son, if you love your daughter text them, call them, pull them by the ears and get em home. Get them home right now. When on seeing more loss of life, we do want to see we do not want to see anymore injuries. Patrick restoring calm was the theme of that press conference. Thema heres what Common Council president Ashanti Hamilton had to say. Ashanti hamilton we are calling on everyone to do what they we understand the frustration that many people feel with the Police Community relation happening nationally. What we want to be able to do is gather the information. You have to understand that when we get the info, we share it with the public. Theres nothing to hide. Were making sure it gets out there in a timely manner. We have to make sure theres justice. But we have to be able to restore order to these neighborhoods. I want you to think about the neighborhood that these situations are happening in. So, collectively, we want to call on Committee Members to this, the bp gas station at sherman amber light. It looks like some the cleanup might be underway. Please do have the police do have the area secured. We do have some video from bp overnight. The mayor talked about as well, its unclear how exactly it was set on fire, but it burned for a couple of hours. Firefighters and police couldnt get close. The crowd was extremely out of control. The gas station just based on the fire appears to be a total loss. The area out here near perlite burly sherman and burleigh. Matt salemme spotted two different bus shelters that were knocked over and tossed into the street. This was near sherman and burleigh. In that same neighborhood, a large commercial dumpster was also flipped sideways in the street. Thema overnight, police in neighboring communities were also on alert. Patrick wisn 12 news had crews outside mayfair mall in wauwatosa around 2 00 this morning. Police were set up at every building entrance. Officials tell us they received threats about the mall on social at this point it does not seem as though there were any actual incidents there. Thema during the overnight unrest, we learned that one officer was injured. Patrick but multiple squad cars were also damaged during the situation. The Milwaukee Police department tweeted a photo. You can see the vehicles windshield was smashed. This was near sherman and auer. Police say at least three squads were damaged. Two of them had broken windows. An officer was hurt when a brick went through the window. Another squad car was set on fire. Milwaukee police is the main agency hang but several other agencies were called in to help them, including the Milwaukee County Sheriffs Office. The Sheriffs Office emailed us with information about their response. They say deputies are assisting. Thema the email went on to say, quote, shots fired, buildings on fire, objects thrown at law enforcement. Shifts extended to be on scene, state patrol assisting on freeway to allow those patrol deputies to be at the moving scene. Several squads have been damaged by subjects at scene. Bearcat deployed. Assist in restoring order, end quote. Overnight, the coalition for justice sent out this tweet encouraging people to clean up from last nights mess. They plan to meet at sherman park at 8 00 a. M. Milwaukee Police Say Two suspects ran away from officers during a traffic stop. Officers saw one of the suspects, a 23yearold, had a gun, and fired on that man. The man died at the scene. A large crowd gathered while police investigated and started yelling at officers. The department of criminal investigations is now investigating. The officer, a 24yearold, was not hurt and has been placed on administrative duty. The other suspect was taken into right now. Protests overnight centered near sherman and burleigh in milwaukee. Three people were arrested, thats according to the mayor. Our crews captured at least two people being put into mpd police vans. There have been at least six fires set overnight, including one at a b. P. Gas station. That building is destroyed. This all started in response to a fatal officer involved shooting yesterday afternoon near 44th and auer. The department of justice is investigating that shooting. Those fires started first with cars, including a squad, then moved to buildings, starting with a gas station and moving on to several retail stores, a bank , and a liquor store. The district 3 Police Headquarters was also the site of an unprecedented midnight mayor and four aldermen i later talked with the Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm who arrived here to meet with the mayor and police officials. He said he has two roles making sure the investigation into the Fatal Police Shooting is handled independently by the state department of justice, and to oversee any charges that may come from the night of fires and to calm the situation and make sure that the people responsible for any criminal acts tonight are held accountable. They kept shifts over, they called shifts early, they call people on their days off. There were squads here from throughout the city and the Neighborhood Task force coming three, where i am now, which was really the command post for this whole operation. Police say a social media call for protesters after the Fatal Police Shooting of a suspect armed with a handgun led to some 800 people descending. Vehicle fires spread to a gas station in and five other businesses before the night was out. Gunfire in the area of the fires led police to keep firefighters back for a time, leading more damage, until police were able to restore order with the help of three swat vehicles from milwaukee, Milwaukee County, and Waukesha County. Police were coordinating the response operation from the district 3. The assistant police chief giving a briefing here at midnight. We are monitoring the situation from the communications center. We have supervisors paying close attention to the calls for we extended officers on their shifts so that incoming shifts are available to take calls for service. We call officers in from home, we tried to keep the burden on the current patrol force as minimal as possible, so they can continue to police our city and keep our neighborhoods safe. Businesses in the north side neighborhood that were torched overnight because of those demonstrations. Now the sun is coming up little bit, we are getting a better look at some of the damage outside of the Oreilly Auto Parts. You can see the sun peeking in and the light peaking in from where the roof would have been in this building. I want to show you what this scene looked like when i first got out here a little before midnight last night. Crews were battling this fire for hours, trying to get an upper hand on it. It took them quite some time get it under control. The last crew didnt leave until around 3 30 a. M. Down the street from where we are at the Oreilly Auto Parts fire, there was another fire at the pj supermarket, the neighborhood also dealing with businesses that have been torched overnight. I spent people live in that area, they told me the sad that this is happening, but one person said he didnt want to say that it was good that it was happening. But because of what has been between the can the police and community, it was almost necessary. Those are his words, not mine. Another look at the Auto Parts Store, completely ravaged and destroyed by that fire. We are around the corner from a few other businesses that burned down. The Beauty Supply store and the bank. At the end of june in the beginning of july, sherman park about 100 teenagers and adults started throwing bricks of the local business, and the county bus. Thema in late july, and employee of the bp gas station that burned down had a runin with teenagers at the store, sparking protests. At one point, he fired a gun in the air near a group of teenagers. He was let go from the store and is charged with disorderly conduct. Patrick on friday night and early saturday, two men were fond du lac. That building burned to the ground. Firefighters were not able to find that fire right away due to gunshots ring on the area. Crews were able to save the other buildings in the area. Patrick another fire burned, just down the street from there at Oreilly Auto Parts. That business is at 35th and burleigh. Thema just a few minutes later, another fire was reported at jet Beauty Supply, also at 35th and burleigh. Then, another fire, this time, at the Bmo Harris Bank near fond the last two fires were at two other stores. Pjs supermarket at 21st and burleigh. And mjm liquor near 23rd and fond du lac. As is as close as we can get right now, and you can see the cleanup is underway in the parking lot. There are more officers when we arrived, about 40 minutes ago. Some have since left. The last couple of minutes, one of the bus shelters that was knocked over and put in the street was also taken away by a tow truck. Closer to where we are, theres a Corner Grocery store, and department of public works workers have arrived here to be boarded up to read some of those windows are broken. There is metal of the inside of the windows, so were not sure if anyone was able to get inside. This area had hundreds of people in the street last night, really, just a lack of control at that point. There were just so many people. Officers have since blocked off the area and everyone has gone home. It is only a couple of people Walking Around right now. But again, there is a lot of trash in the street cleanup left to do. Patrick the officerinvolved shooting happened yesterday afternoon in milwaukees sherman park neighborhood. Thema Milwaukee Police say two suspects ran away from officers during a traffic stop. During the chase, Police Say One of the officers saw one of the suspects, a 23yearold, had a gun, and shot the man. Crowds gathered during the investigation, later that evening is when things started to escalate. Now, leaders across the city of milwaukee are trying to restore the peace. Patrick Council President Ashanti Hamilton had to say. All of them are trying to work extremely hard to take care of the concerns about what people have over this officerinvolved shooting. Several fires six of them, primarily in the sherman park neighborhood. This fires followed a fatal officerinvolved shooting, saturday afternoon, in the area. Gas station at sherman and burleigh, which is now destroyed. Ben thema and patrick, we were on officerinvolved shooting yesterday, there were number of people gathering around 7 00 last night. You really feel the tense feeling in the air last night, if you take a look now, its finally light enough out here to see what happened later on in thev the bp gas station a block from where we are. As close as we can get, just a complete shell, completely destroyed. There is still smoke coming out of the top of whats left of that building. We do have video of last night, when the flames were just going for a couple of hours. It was really no way to stop it at that point. The ground was still out here, it was an unsafe situation for both police and firefighters. That building burned and burned, and now its left with nothing. Theres also department of public works worker actually cutting some plywood to help out with the Corner Grocery store and everything thats happening there.
