Despite the diagnosis, Health Authorities believe the virus is highly unlikely to spread in china due to low winter temperatures and a lack of mosquito activity. The centers for Disease Control has also ramped up its response to the zika virus here in the u. S. At this point, there have been no cases reported here specifically in South Carolina. But the center for Disease Control reports there have been 51 zika infections in the u. S. The majority of those have been travelrelated. We spoke doctor Helmut Albrecht at usc, about what folks here in South Carolina need to know. Dr. Population in the midlands of the mosquito that transmits the zika virus. Two species of the aedes mosquito in particular can transmit zika its the same mosquito that transmits chikungunya and dengue along with other viruses. Dr. Albrecht says the zika virus seems to be transmitted similarly to these other viruses and now we know that includes sexual transmission. He adds there is no treatment for the zika virus because, typically, people who contract it will get over it with tylenol and rest. Right now we dont have much of a problem because were in the winter season. But we know that these mosquitoes will show up and if zika is introduced we will see cases here. How widespread that introduction will be is anybodys guess. The main concern is for pregnant women because zika is known to cause a rare birth defect. Dr. Albrecht adds about 80 percent of people who get zika will not and of the remaining 20, a majority will have a very mild flulike illness plus a rash. Two species of the aedes mosquito in particular can transmit zika its the same mosquito that transmits chikungunya and dengue along with other viruses. Dr. Albrecht says the zika virus seems to be transmitted similarly to these other viruses and now we know that includes sexual transmission. He adds there is no treatment for the zika virus because, typically, people who contract it will get over it with tylenol and rest. Right now we dont have much of a problem because were in the winter season. But we know that these mosquitoes will show up and if zika is introduced we will see cases here. How widespread that introduction will be is anybodys guess. The main concern is for pregnant women because zika is known to cause a rare birth defect. The flight later continued on to san diego. The Supreme Court has temporarily blocked the Obama Administrations plan to limit Greenhouse Gas emissions from power plants. Under the epas clean power plan, states would be required to meet specific carbon Emission Reduction standards based on their energy consumption. More than two dozen states have filed a federal lawsuit to South Carolina department of transportation director christy hall wants lawmakers to know they could have to pay more than expected if they dont start putting money into repairing roads soon. Says he wants senators to have as much information as possible before discussion begins on the senate floor about getting more money to the states highways. That decision put a delay on the roads debate reaching the senate floor. The director of South Carolinas department of Public Safety could stick around for another four years. The Senate Judiciary committee has voted unanimously to advance leroy smiths confirmation. Smith took command in november of 2011 of the agency that oversees the Highway Patrol, transport police, and the bureau of protective services. And Ohio Governor, john kasich was the surprise of the night coming in 2nd place with 16percent of on the democratic side, Bernie Sanders is cranking up the pressure on Hillary Clinton. After clinton edged out sanders in iowa, sanders dominated in New Hampshire. Sanders takes 60percent of votes. Clinton 38percent.
