Terra firma. Let me go over what needs to happen before stocks can stop going down. First, we wanted a better narrative out of the Federal Reserve. Someone on twitter said why do you use the word narrative instead of story . All right. We wanted a better story out of the fed reserve. We wanted them off the nation of raising rates at a gradual pace because we are worried about inflation. You can parse the fed statement all you want. Its exactly that. They didnt rule out a march hike. Shame on them. If jobless claims spike again tomorrow want to know if the analog fed members are really ready to tighten again despite digital deflation everywhere. In fact, i thought the whole statement was downright hawkish and bad for workers. The fed still thinks inflation could be a problem despite the decline in oil which doesnt seem to take seriously and doesnt see a cessation in good luck. Box made worse, dare i say they know nothing. Second. I want to see an end to political uncertainty. To that all i can say is its a lot worse out there. We have no idea who will win in the iowa caucuses. The two democrats are running against wall street with capital as is the gop frontrunner donald trump who castigates Hedge Fund Managers for not paying their fair share. Hillary clinton and trump and Bernie Sanders want medicare to cram down big pharma by negotiating with the companies. Holy cow. Who wonder the biotech stocks are crushed. From the stock market perspective all candidates agree on policies that are bad for the financials and terrible for the drug companies. The better sanders does in the run against the wealthy. Shes veering head on into the capital bashing lane. The uncertainty has only gotten worse since i create ed the checklist three weeks ago. Wanted china to get better. We were wrong. The data are weak and the china stock market is down below the 3,000 floor which now looks like a distant memory. We heard from apple that Greater China cell phone growth is slowing. Last summer it was still going. Fourth. We wanted a commodities bottom. The forecasts im seeing for the major commodities sees one more down leg coming especially for oil and and coal. Wonderful. Fifth, we saw iron go up today. We could be out of the woods when it comes to a decline to the teens judging by comments from haliburton and schlumberger. We could see a cut back in supply. What do the saudis hing . I will ask the ceo of core labs about the rapid recovery. Lets see whether he sticks by that. I think well see the mid 20s level again. A little bit above 30 before a we wanted to see geez political tensions die down down. Remember i came out with the list when it seemed north korea just detonated an hbomb. You know what . This box, all right. I feel better about that one. I dont want to get out a pen and mess it up. Ill get yelled at. But i will check it out. Ill do it in pencil and erase it if it comes back. Seven, i wanted Zombie Companies to be euthanized and reorganized. Now with the stressedout list of stocks, its funny. All the companies on the list get new life support from a temporary lift in fortunes. How about the chinese Zombie Companies . Those state owned enterprises are a buzz kill. So are valet and petrobras. Life. The zombies live. Eighth item, i was cope ing the super strong dollar would run its course. When you listen to 3m, j and j its only gotten much worse since the fed tightened in september. Who would have thought a quarter point would be that bad . We did. You have to think apple or procter could ride double digit declines in europe but many of the emerging market currencies have gone from 10 to 40 . The fed seems indifferent to the trajectories even though it ultimately means layoffs here to keep sales and earnings up over there after the hit from currency translation. Nine, we need to see m a activity. We have Johnson Controls merging with tyco and a crane maker may not have gotten the chinese bid several trillion dollar m market this time last year. Ten, the ipo market. There is none. All the starving unicorning, companies that were supposed to be eagerly await, forget it. Nobody wants them. The brokers with fees, good luck making the numbers partners with no m a, no ipo, where will the fees come from to make the quarters . No wonder the financials cant get out of the way. Rate hikes, m a, something. Right now they have nothing. 11, the peaks. We are liking the adirondacks, the high peak region. There are too many. I believe we have seen auto peak, cell phone, housing peak. Well hear from pbg later and maybe they can argue. Apple didnt change my mind on cell phones. I only feel a little bit worse but i have something to say later. After the numbers from boeing today its a reasonable question to ask if aerospace or boeing synonymous with aerospace. One of the strongest cycles out there. Egads. What is that . 12, i wanted to see Tech Leadership outside of facebook, google, amazon. You have to get that soupy sales reference. Facebook crushed it after the close. The leadership remains narrow and the decline after hours in the stock of service now which some people said we would be safe in is going to help the cloud cohort tomorrow, not at all. They will all get hit officer visnow. 13, i wanted sentiment to be horrendous. They were up and down and that brought out the bulls and optimists. We are barely over sold. A week ago we were dramatically over sold. No cushion from that. There isnt the revulsion and disgust we felt at this time last week. I guess it has to get ugh ily again before we get to a safe er place. Finally i was praying to see something, anything to sig any anyway leadership than kroger or home depot. Before the fed spoke we had a shot. Kroger was at least higher. Bottom line is that we still have way too many unchecked boxes, way too many. Just when we thought the fed could do the job they let us down again. March isnt off the table. We are back into a world of hurt here in stocks until we can start checking off the boxes. Until then keep cash on the sidelines, dont get too excited when the market rallies. The cavalry hasnt left the fort yet let alone being over the ridge ready to help those of us who circled the wagons around a few remaining good companies. Lets see. Dollar stops going higher, no, no. Oil stabilized. Oh, oh, oh. I feel better already. John in texas, john. Caller hello, jim. A san antonio booyah to you. I like san antonio. Its like venice. Caller you have been positive on tupperware brands in the past. Today they announced they missed the Fourth Quarter earningsest mauts by three cents a share that guided down their 2016 earnings estimates and the stock closed down almost 15 . Is now the time to start buying . Thanks. Now is the time to start hanging myself. I have to tell you it was a good story when rick was on last. Heres my advice. Come on the show tomorrow. Ill clear the decks. That was a bad quarter. How do i know . The fist line in your quote was it was disappointing. I want to know how it could get disappointing so quickly because it was pretty good. Thats not what we want to hear. We want to hear a company has no problem paying the dividend. There are many boxes unchecked but its nice to see this one. Anyone whos watched the market lately knows we are hostage to the price of oil. Even as the averages went down today when the price of crude went up. Thats the exception not the rule. Given that oil seems to be punching above its weight in stock market. It is imperative to get the best understanding of the space we can get. We have heard from schlumberger that could mean a crude price might be bottoming, maybe this year. Today we hear from core labs known as the scientists of the oil patch because they use the technology to analyst rock and fluids in Oil Reservoirs so clients can find the best ways to drill. Even though the stock has fallen nearly 60 from the high two years ago the company has remained profitable. Core labs reported today a company delivered in line earn ings higher revenues and declined year over year. It is in the oil business. Manages guidance for the next quarter came in below what analysts aring looking for but it shrunk to share to a low and is doing better than new mexico every other company i follow in this area. Lets go to david demshur, the ceo of core labs. Welcome back to mad money. Hey, jim, thanks for having when i read through the things you are doing i realize that the reason why drilling budgets have been able to produce far more oil than they used to is they have hired you to find out where the sweet spots are and you are the optimization they need to get the drilling budgets to produce the most oil. Absolutely correct, jim. Remember , our mission is to help our clients produce more oil and gas every day. More importantly to produce more oil and gas from the assets they have. On average if you look at some of the unconventional play it is recovery factors are around 9 to 10 . We believele over time we can get it up to 12, 13, 15 . So although well see lower drilling activity, we might see higher productivity from the client that is use core laboratories. I felt it was really there was a line in your these guys are so transparent. I love it. You said in spite of the volatility in the First Quarter of 2015 you maintained a steady equitybacked companies. So there is still money waiting in the wings when these companies that are currently trading get challenged. Thats right, jim. Actually private equity is playing a large role now in the unconventional plays in north america. We have large databases available to them for a million or 2 million. They can get a plethora of data, understand the acreage quickly and find the sweet spot to collect acreage they can accumulate now for some companies that might have struggling balance sheets. Wow. Thats important. A lot of people are saying when we dont know. David, you were spot on in decline. Obviously you dont control gulf of mexico. A lot of projects came on stream and made it so we produced more than we thought. When you were on last you thought maybe the saudis would stop overpumping, so to speak. It looks to me like we have been have been acting maybe they have a lot more oil than we realized or they can pump faster than we thought. They are down about 300,000 barrels. But the old pumping pretty much maximum rates. When we look at the decline curves worldwide at core laboratories we increased that from about 2. 5 net last year at this time. We increased it to 3 17b9 1 net. On an 85 Million Dollar worldwide production base, next year at this time we have to produce 2. 6 million mu barrels to take the place of what the decline curve will take away from us. We find the globe having a very difficult time to do that and thats why we see crude oil markets balancing in the second half of 2016. Continued falls here in the u. S. And then also internationally, well see decreases in production as well. Absolutelile jay did it, but you laid it out. You said oil is going down because demand is weaker. Tell our audience how specifically you feel that way. Its laid out well in your release. If you look at it, a lot of the news flashes coming out of china are all suggesting that the economy is slowing and their ability to increase the crude Oil Consumption is going down. Thats not correct. If you look at the numbers in the Fourth Quarter, you will see Strong Demand increases in china. Probably continuing into 2016. So on the demand side we feel pretty good about a 1. 2 million barrel a day rise in demand. Over the demand we had last year 2015 of 1. 7 million. So you put on the demand of 1. 2 million, a decline curve of 2. 6 million world wide and you can quickly get crude oil markets to balance in the second half of if i listen to that, what i want to do is take off the table the january to march 1986 scenario wherele oil was at 26 and it went down to 10. You were in the business. Could it happen again somehow . It cant happen. Back then if we look at the over capacity around the globe it was 10 to 12 million barrels. Today the Spare Capacity in the world is probably nearer to one or less than that. Without the Spare Capacity when demand bumps up against supply you will have a reaction in price. Up prices go and up go worldwide activity for Companies Like core laboratories. A lot of companies are determining how to preserve if not cut the dividend and have gotten away from the buyback. Thats not your style. No, its not. Good Companies Increase dividends. Stay tuned later this year to see what we can do about that. You are a good company. You have kept us straight on this issue. David demshur from core labs, mad money. Look, its a tough group. There are Certain Company that core labs is one of them. Stay with cramer. Announcer coming up, low hanging fruit . Plumpify your lashes with new plumpify mascara a ginormous lash boosts lashes to 50 times the volume and lifts lashes new plumpify mascara how do we value a company thats not like any other company . How do we put a price tag on a business that currently has an active user base of more than 1 billion satisfied customers. Thats the conundrum facing those who try to value the stock of apple, the greatest wealth creator of our generation. [ bull bellowing ] they have to extrapolate from the earn ings report to give you advice about what the stock should be worth and after today, i dont know. Is worth. For my money theyre blowing it. Sure the analysts have price models they can move and phones they can count. The various inputs yield conclusions that are very much in keeping with other discussions, other decisions they might have made about any other Hardware Company they might have followed in their career. Maybe they followed huld pakd, intel, compaq. Whats the conclusion . Goes like this. Apple owns the celle phone market as it currently kpis. Now that it is forecasting the first down year that means the cell phone business must be saturated. Apple sold 74. 8 million iphones in the december quarter, an all time high, by the way, signals not good news but a peak. A peak in business, not in ascension. To them there is no base camp on the summit of everest. Worse, the peaks to the skeptics in this case occurred in the middle of the quarter because why else would ceo tim cook say on the call we began to see notably in hong kong, end quote. If a company with a serious line of business is going into a quarter over quarter and perhaps year over year decline in sales with the analysts thats all she wrote. Traditionally product cycles peak and produce declining earn ings estimates. People pay a lower multiple, lower multiples on lower earn ings is a stock fact of life. If apple had Something Else to make up for whats now viewed as the inevident able downturn in iphones. Perhaps 15 to 20 unit nose dive as one analyst postulated on the call. They arent selling like they used to. Macs even reached a peak in units. The watch is doing well and so is apple t but not enough to mask any iphone deceleration. That means the analysts have no cover. Stock because its cheap on earn ings even if earn ings are going down and apple is roughly 40 per share to slash the reck men edition. So we hear analysts keep a half hearted buy rating on it and keep slicing price targets in order to minimize their affiliation with the bull camp. The company can return an immense amount of capital and could be a trampoline or shrink the share account financially engineering higher earn ings per share. Everybody else does it. Its a lever. In the end, the analyst who is follow apple, they are traditionalists. Theyre bound by the four walls of what brought them there. They have seen the peak in mainframes that led to disasterses rous years for the old ibm. They have seen the peak in mid range computers which meant the end of digital equipment. They saw mini Computer Companies dell went private. They have learned the lesson and after this quarter each worked hard to distance itself from the cupertino monster. I heard it on the call. I felt every analyst did his best to be respectfulle and acknowledge apples greatness without saying its all over but the crying. I could easily join them and say, hey, it was great while it lasted. Nice to know you. Im a generalist, not a technology analyst. I have been on calls from Different Companies and i cant view apple like just another Hardware Company. When i didnt like my dell or saw a cheaper deal for a gateway or hewlettpackard i switched. Theyre different toothpastes. Given every time you heard the word macro on apples call you could tell the weakness and turmoil makes the analogile to people are spending 691 for a phone up from a year ago despite the strong dollar. Thats when it hit me. Every other International Company i follow has found it almost impossible to raise prices in this environment. Almost every American Company had to deal with Foreign Exchange ratios that have lowered the average price of whatever they were selling including toothpaste. Apple didnt. Apple didnt have to. Why not . Simple. Brand loyalty. Apples products are loved like no other. Its hard to put a price multiple on that. For a moment i wonder if that was a dead end. Lexus has brandle loyalty. So does bmw. If the world is saturated with cars who cares . The prices are coming down. Then i thought apple is like tobacco. Brand addiction. But tobacco is interchangeable even as the category the shinging like the analysts think apple is. How about a drug company . Maybe its pfizers lipitor, you had to take it. But the patent ran out oh and you had shares in a company where earns had peaked but pfizer was still getting a richer earn ing. There is no sensitivity in pfizers products and there is to ap. Then i had my eureka moment. We had a met rick the company gave us. It can quantify the value of brand loyalty. Apple didnt explain it that way. Im talking about the slide in the apple deck called service rev new which showed that installed base re news, the ones we pay for itunes music, the app store, icloud, apple pay. Oh, yeah. Of course i paid that and that. Thats an incredible 23 clip year over year just like that. Huge. Thats the number we need to keep an eye on. Owners number. Not the exact number of new devices. Thats not as important a metric anymore. The devices are the razor. But the service rev new is the lucrative razor blade stream for apple. Unlike gillettes razor blade system, the brand loyalty here is so great you wont use barbasol shaving cream or switch to schick quatro. You like your iphone may mean you like the mac, itunes, all the other aspects. Ipad, whatever. I have questioned the health of the apple ecosystem. Ray czar blade model. At a certain point you see resistance to the price of the ray czar. If we didnt see it this quarter, were not. The higher Gross Margins, higher prices paid for the phones tells me there isnt a lot of 93 stock. It can earn 9 a share in earn ings. Some regard it as peak. What happens if people who switched to apple from other brands or were trading up in america or starting out in china or india where there were so many young people getting to the apple iphone, what if they get as comfortable as we are with the ecosystem and have that checklist where we keep paying each month without thinking about it . The razor blade rev new, the high gross margin stuff you buy from apple orgy let isnt getting enough credit as it should. Especially considering the monster growth rate the Service Revenues have. Maybe apple doesnt need the watch to trump peaking phone sales or the tv to really hit it out of the park. Maybe it needs to keep selling more devices and let the Service Stream do the talking or let me do the talking for the Service Stream. I will do it. This Time Next Year it wouldnt shock me if the service rev new number became the key metric we follow. Especially with the iphone 7 fall. If thats thes case the bottom line is you are getting just maybe when we get the inevident able downgrades and the analysts take it even lower you will recognize that this razor blade revenue stream makes the stock worth owns just when others are throwing it away. All the more reason that one more miserable day for the market i say own, dont trade apple. Tom in new york. Tom. Caller jim. Im feeling the pain, looking for the gain in fitbit. I bought a thousand shares at 38. It dove to 21. Cost average is 26. Its at 16 and change. Citibank gives it a buy rating. What do you think . I lo the citi piece. It was great but we are in a fitbit are viewed as gimmicks and cant get traction. It is a health and wellness play james park is doing good work. We all wear fitbits here or the family does. It doesnt matter now but will some day. I like thad piece. That was a good reck men edition. Apple doesnt need to trump iphone sales. It has brand loyalty. I cant say it enough. Dont trade apple. Own it yeah. With this you would take this if it was made by apple. There is much more mad money ahead. Ppg has fallen more than 20 from the highs. Is it a buy opportunity or a red flag . With when it comes to ppg, the specially chem. El call maker that makes paints and coat ings. When ppg reported on thursday the company beat wall street earn ings estimates as the sales came in below expectations declining. 3 . Would have been up 7 on a on assistant currency bay if not for the dollar but wall street doesnt care about those numbers. The headline numbers were mixed if you listened to the Conference Call the new ceo Michael Mcgary seemed positive about the prospects Going Forward and the Overall Health of the Global Economy not to mention future demand for the products. The stock has fallen 20 from highs last summer. Got to wonder if this is a decent opportunity. Lets check in with the new president and ceo of ppg to learn about where the company is headed. Welcome back to mad money. Thank you, jim. Great to be back. Appreciate the invite. I have to ask you to do a reality check for us. The market has become gloomy and you are pretty much the king of the markets that youre in. I will do a lightning round. You can tell me whether im too negative. Have autos peaked . No. I think they are in the later they certainly have room to go in europe. Regle administrations are outpacing sales. We have more upward potential there. Certainly brazil will be down the whole year, we think. China, i think we still have an opportunity for a positive surprise given the fact that the tax on small engines has been reduced and will continue to be at the lower level for 2016. People watching the show should know you have a great breadth of awesome including most of the high end. This is not something that has to do with, yeah , we deal with the cheapest cars and theyre doing okay. No. We deal with everybody in china. In fact, like i told you before, we are agnostic about who sells the cars. We paint them all. Had a jarring number today from boeing. Leaving people to feel aerospace peaked but you are agnostic about aerospace and you do a lot of coating there. How do you feel about it . We were disappointed in the build rates given the backlog, they have more products that come out in general aviation that are doing well. The big general aviation planes are doing well. The smaller ones are struggling. Overall we are selling more content per plane. So we are doing okay in that market. We had a little bit soft in the Fourth Quarter but see a return to growth in the first. You do coatings for homes including big business in mexico. I read yesterday a stirring analysis of forex for procter and gamble saying to look out for the peso and argentina. How are you feeling about coatings, particularly for residential and i know you also for big buildings in light of the fact that the currency is just not going your way . If you start in mexico, we had a really tremendous quarter and a full year with our comex acquisition. For the full europe it was up almost 7 . Mexico and sales continue to grow. We are pleased with what we see there. Government spending is down a little bit in mexico. We are all setting that by bringing new ppg products that comex didnt have access to into mexico, central america. We are doing well. Obviously in the u. S. And canada, in our stores we are flat if you combine u. S. And canada due to the weak canadian business. But we are pleased that weve gotten new traction with the branding in the u. S. So we think we are starting to see a little bit of positive there as well. All right. Now for the lightning round. I got the answers i need from a great American Company. You cant be gloomy if that goodness is happening. In europe, last time we spoke europe was getting a little bit better. It seems like it has only improved since we last spoke. Yeah, jim. If you remember the last time we talked europe was up 1 in q1. Slightly better in q2. About the same in q3. Q4 we were up 3 in europe. Obviously its coming off a low base. Better. Germany, the uk, ireland have been steady. Its not all the doom and gloom read the news the paper or listened to the t. Lets finish up with another thing thats positive. Your raw costs have made it so the Gross Margins have been sensational since you got in. Wouldnt you say . I would tell you that our purchasing team has done a good job of working with the suppliers. Honestly, you know, falling oil is a posotive and a negative. We are a supplier into the marine business. We are a supplier in the oil business. I would rather be talking to suppliers about innovation because innovation drives us. So, you know, steady oil is better than what we have. Constantly, you know, we are working with suppliers that have customers as well. I have to thank you for the reality check. If you worked in stocks you would think the Federal Reserve is crazy. At least i understand why they might think somebody is doing well. Ppg is certainly doing well. President and ceo of ppg industries, thank you for coming on the show. Thank you very much. Take the doom and gloom off the table. When the stock market gives you doom and gloom prices think of ppg. Its a bargain at doom and gloom prices. Mad money is back after the break. S. You could get width now and leave the stock. Ryan in new york. Ryan. Caller hi, jim. My stock is uni cure. We think its a decent speculation. Be careful. A lot of people hate the bio techs. People just dont care. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the conclusion of the lightning round. Announcer the lightning ameritrade. Holy cow. Did we just lose the aerospace cycle or did we lose boeing . I have to tell you that after the very jarring forecast boeing gave you this morning it was a brucer, a really nasty one that led thomas sieve estimate cuts. I can only conclude we have seen some sort of pause in aerospace. Now that doesnt mean the company is involved in the industry are dead. Not at all. We got a good quarter from United States technologies and the most outstanding portion of the quarter was none other than the division was. Some of it may be because United Technologies has built a better mouse trap called the gtf, the gear turbo fan and it is selling like hot cakes. After the forecast from boeing making it dramatically weaker not just weaker we have to believe airlines dont need as many planes. Perhaps the Leasing Companies have been stopped from purchasing for some reason. Maybe the chinese who have been the buyers of planes are rethinking it. Maybe they are out of money to buy aircraft. Perhaps the super freaking strong dollar has slowed world travel, something Goldman Sachs signalled when it called a peak in travel with the downgrade of price line. Boeing announced the 737 would be curtailed and it was a huge money maker and the dreamliner is still too costly to manufacture to replace the lost re new and they cant meet the demands of the smaller planes. Perhaps the problem is more about boeing than we think. Remember, boeing is uniquely american but that doesnt mean are. United technologies is a big business with airbus in the running for monster orders from iran and taking over leadership in plane wings from boeing. You have to buy super expensive dollars before you can purchase boeing planes in them. They dont buy in e uros. Face it. An airbus in debased euros is a bargain versus anything boeing makes. The fed policies are making it tougher. More layoffs coming. Because of the currency fluctuations it is as though the airbus is having a sale. That could be the reason United Technologies saw stock go up on a hideous day. The new engine is taking profits away from the competition. The profits in the back end really come from the servicing of the engines that and that will be more gigantic. Thats where the gracie is as it will be for United Technologies. This makes sense. Last friday that aerospace orders were terrific. Sure it does business with boeing. Whatses the point of saying orders are strong when they arent. Isnt it likely ge which supports every maker of air krft to get as many orders as it was if the airbus were doing well and boeing were weak or boeing was doing well and airbus was weak. How about alcoa . Sure it was 20 long days ago but they signalled aerospace has gotten stronger. That would contradict boeings outlook. My take . After boeings negative forecast we have to lebd credence to the idea that we may have to factor in a possible aerospace peak. If we get downgrades tomorrow. May i suggest you buy honeywell before it reports on friday morning . Buy it into the weakness tomorrow. I bet honeyball will be more like United Technologies than boeing given the lines it has including climate controls, turbo chargers for cars and trucks. My guess is you can get it at a discount tomorrow after boeing downgrades. I would pounce betting that honeywells ceo dave cody has things more under control than boeing does.
