Upmeyer says there is 153million more dollars on the table to be spent this year. But that doesnt mean lawmakers have to spend it. While upmeyer dredged up battles from last year. So did her counterpoint on the democratic side. The Des Moines City Council will in the middle of a time when senior poverty is increasing. Republicans and some democrats came up with a brilliant idea for cutting costofliving adjustments for Social Security. We said, it will be over our dead bodies if you cut Social Security. As president , i will do everything i can to extend the solvency of Social Security and expand benefits for people who desperately need them. History. And possibly tearing down another. Tonight is the first meeting of the new year for the city council. Theyll begin 2016 by taking the next step towards saving a bridge built in 1898. In november the council gave save the jackson street bridge. The pedestrian bridge was closed in 2013 due to structural deterioration. Tonight the council will accept a bid to begin the work to reopen it. Repairing it will cost more than twoMillion Dollars. But only a quarter of that money comes from the city. More than half the money will come from a successful private fundraiser. One condition of that fundraiser is that the name of the bridge be changed back to its original name. Fifth street bridge. While working to save that piece of history. The council could take a step towards tearing down this historic structure. This church at 811 crocker street was built in 1912.
