That might change some minds im steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. A new poll of Iowa Democrats shows Hillary Clinton is back in the lead here. The Des Moines Register poll released this morning shows clinton leading Bernie Sanders 48 percent to 41percent. Martin o malley is a far, far distant third with just twopercent support. A new poll of Iowa Republicans shows a major shakeup in the race for that nomination here. The Quinnipiac University poll shows ben carson has overtaken donald trump and opened up an eight point lead. Marco rubio was a strong third with 13percent of the vote followed by ted cruz at tenpercent. Rand paul climbs to fifth. Jeb bush and Carly Fiorina tie in sixth. Bobby jindal and john kasich are tied for eighth. But the big story is at the top of the poll. Political director dave price has a closer look at the battle between carson and trump. It seems like Donald Trumps part of every political headline. Well, theres a new headline. Donald trumps no longer iowa s republican front runner. Ben carson is. At least in this one poll on this one day. But this quinnipiac poll does show sizable movement in just six weeks. Its a 15 point swing. Likely republican caucusgoers seem to like both carson and trump as non traditional candidates. Both men have never held elected office. And iowans are frustrated with the work of elected officials in washington. But in this poll. More want carson. They think carsons the most honest choice, most trustworthy, best shares their values and cares most about their problems. Thats not just head to head against trump. Thats carson chosen the best in those qualities in the entire republican field. And theres this battle of the sexes. Men like trump and carson about the same. But women dont. Women prefer carson over trump by twenty points. 33 to 13. But one thing to keep in mind here is who actually shows up on caucus night. A drake study showed nearly six in 10 who caucused for republicans in 2012 were men so carsons big edge with women now may not be as valuable on caucus night. If those numbers hold true again in 2016. So carson is obviously seeing a boom in support here. But one iowan in particular got a special message from the candidate himself this week. Hey justin im here in new york city wishing you a very happy birthday and thanks for all your support. Coming up tonight at six. Who received that birthday message and tell you why dr. Carson is such a big fan of his. At least one member of Donald Trumps campaign was irritated by this news. And that person ended up making news via twitter. After the poll was released, it appears one of trumps staffers retweeted a message that took aim at iowa voters. It was from trumps account and it said mygreenhippo bencarson is now leading in the polls in iowa. Too much monsanto in the corn creates issues in the brain . Trump gop it was deleted hours later and followed by this tweet the young intern who accidentally did a retweet apologizes. It was a split decision by a federal jury in des moines today. Campaign staffers were on trial. They were accused of covering up payments to former iowa state senator Kent Sorenson during the 2012 president ial cycle. Sorensen admits he switched his support from Michelle Bachmanns president ial campaign to ron pauls in 2012. After he was paid 73 thousand dollars by the Paul Campaign. Money that wasnt properly reported to federal officials. According to the Des Moines Register. A jury has acquitted former Paul Campaign chair jesse benton of the single charge he was facing. However former Campaign ManagerDimitri Kesari was found guilty of causing a false record. He was acquitted of a charge of obstruction of justice. Sorenson has already pleaded guilty for his role in the coverup. His sentencing was delayed until after todays trial ended. Elected officials in boone county are standing strong against the bakken oil pipeline. The countys board of supervisors unanimously approved a measure in opposition of the crude oil pipeline wedenesday morning. They cite environmental hazards and Dakota Access threat to use Eminent Domain throughout the pipelines 11hundred mile long, 18 county stretch across the state. Those who are in favor of the pipeline say the project will create jobs and increase u. S. Energy independence. They also say iowans who lose land will actually gain millions of dollars annually in payments and property tax relief. Supervisor Chet Hollingshead says they heard from supporters and critics both. But one voice won out. We dont have any Regulatory Power when it comes to this pipeline but we can send a message to the folks on the iowa utilities board that we arent in favor of this and it sends a strong message when it comes unanimously in a bipartisan manner from the board of supervisors. The iowa utilities board will be holding nearly a dozen Public Meetings through the end of this year. Board members say there is no whether to allow Dakota Access the right to meanwhile an attempt to stop the pipeline in northwest iowa through the courts has failed. Three landowners were trying to sue the iowa utilities board to stop them from allowing the use of Eminent Domain. This week a judge threw out that lawsuit. Saying the landowners have to wait for the board to actually act before they can sue. Its apparently a good time to invest in townhomes in downtown des moines. Thats what Hubbell Realty is saying after it sold every townhome at its new artisan Row Development on grand avenue. Even before the units are even finished. The first wave will be completed by the end of this year, with tenants moving in within the next month. Units range from 300 to 350thousand dollars. Hubbell says this is only the beginning. Theyre a hot commodity for different age groups. You see a millenial moving in here because its a home they can afford; you see emptynesters moving into townhomes because its that time of life where they want to have more freedom, and not be tied to a singlefamily home doing the yard, the snow removals, those kinds of things. 01 22 hubbells next townhome venture downtown will be the bridge district in the east village. News at four front door. Ever done that before. The chicago cubs and their fans thought this year might be the they would break a historic championship drought. Instead they watched as history was made on their home field. On their way to another playoff exit. The cubs faced nearly impossible odds last night. Down threegames to zero they needed to win four straight against the mets. Instead the mets took a four run lead in the first inning and never looked back. The game was sealed with a homerun by mets secondbasemen daniel murphy. As you hear it was his 6th straight playoff game with a homerun. A new Major League Baseball record. We caught up with one des moines native who is a chicago cubs superfan. Hes been at Wrigley Field all week for the games, and he says hes focusing on the Silver Lining with the cubs performance this season. The cubs were not supposed to be a very good team this year. I think realistically, everybody was going to be satisfied if we kind of played 500 baseball, and most indication pointed toward the cubs starting to get pretty good with their young talent in a year or two. So, despite the fact that the season didnt exactly end on the best of terms, i think if you would have told any cubs fan that they were going to be in the National League championship series at the beginning of the season, that would have been a monumental feat in itself and everyone would have taken it, so. 01 32 ross schoofs says he actually had sold his game 5 ticket on stub hub already. But that of course fell through last night. One upside to the cubs loss last night. Schoofs ran into the teams owner, tom ricketts just outside of Wrigley Field. He was just walking down the street on waveland avenue right behind the left field bleachers. Just walking down, happened to see him, just shouted hey tom mind if i get a picture with you . he said absolutely. stopped, real nice guy, im sure he had a lot going on but kind of bizarre to see the owner just Walking Around the ballpark actually, right outside the ballpark. 01 22 schoofs says he looks forward to being back at wrigley next year when hes sure the cubs will make it through. The iowa cubs are remaining optimistic as well. Today the scoreboard was lit up with a simple message for fans. Wait til next year ad lib main weather tonight will stay cloudy with if you think storm damage is the only cost of climate change, think again. From the rising price of food to higher insurance rates for homes and businesses, the economic damage will only get worse. The famous Decorah Eagles are settling into a new home built by volunteers. And their own sweat equity. The project was a big gamble after the birds previous home was destroyed in a storm this summer. Brad hanson has an update on how that gamble is paying off for bird lovers its been a busy fall for the Decorah Eaglesworking hard to build up their nest. This is the time of year where theyre doing some courtship activities, that includes nest building, so that means theyre bringing sticks and branches up into the tree. But this year is a bit differenthowe and his team built half the nest, hoping the eagles would adopt it after a storm blew their old one down. Howe says it was a gamble, but one that has paid off. Sure enough, to our surprise and satisfaction, its actually come true now. The eagles showed up in early october, and since then have spent more and more time in this nest, making it their own, much to the delight of thousands of fans worldwide. Theyre loving it. Its so neat to see how much people are enjoying the eagles already, just this early in the season. Howe believes this is the first time a project like this has been undertakenand successful. He says its even more special because of the history behind this idea. Its neat to think about, was one of the last things we were talking to bob anderson, our former director, before he died. He was very excited about that. So really weve put something together that we wouldve done with him and now weve seen this great success. Heres a live look at the new nest via the new eagle cam. The cost of this new camera equipment was paid for by memorial contributions made after bob andersons death. This year there will be a second eagle camera in the decorah as well. Work is nearly done on that camera and nest.
