But there is one county. The 100th county that all of them missed. Our channel 13s roger riley found it. And takes us back in time for a look. Nats music in the 1800s much of the northwest part of iowa looked like this. An area of wet lands believed caused by glaciers some 12,000 years ago. Sot tom skilling 2915 were within whats called the prairie pothole region, with is the youngest land for, region of the state. This is what some earlier settlers of iowa found, what was left by the glaciers skilling it left behind this area that was flat not well drained. Lots of wetlands eventually it became prairie with wetlands all scattered out. It was believed to have been a river corridor before the glaciers lots of water was an issue for earliest settlers like dwayne sandts dad who farmed east of bancroft 3627 there was a lot of water. There was a time they could have used a boat if they did or not, i dont know to come from the farm into town. Iowa became a state in 1846, but it was in 1851 when most of the counties were created. Including one between minnesota and kossuth county called bancroft county Richard Schiek former county engineer 1 52 in 1851 the western part of the state, the counties were established by the legislature, there were 50 counties in existence that time. They finished platting out all of the counties in the state, and they ended up with a total of 100 counties, and bancroft was one of those counties. Standup 5 45 back in 1851 when bancroft county was formed hardly anybody lived here that led some leaders in nearby algona to conclude, a vacant swamp area would never be a viable county. 3 00 judge call from algona went to the state legislature in 1855 and petitioned the legislature to enlarge the boundaries of kossuth county. That included all of bancroft county and two townships in humboldt county the legislature agreed to the request and bancroft county was no more. As kossuth county grew. A few years later another attempt to form a new county to the north the legislature did approve that and crocker county was established. It was in existence for 19 months, there was a Supreme Court case that was brought by some of the algona residents that said that was unconstitutional because it was not a full twelve townships. Again, kossuth county largest county in the state 819 wanted to retain that honor more or less of saying they were the largest county. Then as more and more settlers came to this region modern technology figured out how to drain the land, some using large equipment. Tiles were made in the area. That meant more farmers could develop what is now some of the best farmland anywhere. 3656 we had a lot of sloughs that have since been drained. At the union slough National Wildlife refuge, near bancroftyou can still get a feel for what it was like back then most of this county is heavily farmed today so its nice square farm fields you come out here theres no straight lines, kind of gives you a feel of what it would have been like 150 years ago. Theres no roads theres wildlife as the swamp land receded more and more towns formed here. 3055 they tried to drain the refuge, that ran a dredge through t te middle. It silted in quikly in the 1930s they came up with the idea to make this a refuge. Now iowas 100th and largest county even has a large map outside the kossuth county courthouse a visual legacy of the story of iowa. And it s now 99 counties. In kossuth county roger riley channel 13 news there were other counties in the 1850s you may not have heard of. Calhoun county was once called fox county. And Webster County was known as yell county. Weve posted photos and maps of the former counties on our iowa hasnt played a winning team since the College Football playoff rankings started, and the hawks have moved up every week.
