Welcome to urban update. Thank you for coming this. Thank you. Dr. Wong a ji to have you here. What is, why is this an exciting field for students to pursue . You know eye care, Eye Health Care professionals, opticians specialize in the experts, and the design, fitting and the dispensing of prescription glasses and contact lenses. And since 85 of our experience with the world on a daily basis is through our visual sense it is important for consumers to have the expertise of an optician to correctly and fits well and is precise, and helps them to meet all their visual needs. There is an 18month program, and we start january students that go through the summer. And we tends to attract students who have an advanced degrees. Students with batch already degrees or higher can come to the program and in an accelerated base. Byron anghelo guevara, why did you get in to optometry and why did you pick benjamin Franklin Institute. My family was in the health eye care. So i decided to go into this. I did a piece of research with my friend showed me Benjamin Franklin the only college that offers this program. So i found it very interesting. Byron okay. Gisele soares you are a student, talk to me about the program and what do you like about the program at the benjamin Franklin Institute of technology. I love everything about the program but what i like most, is they have very small classes and you can get a lot of attention from the professors. They talk to you a lot when have you questions. I like that it is a fast program, too. Byron professor wong, tell me about the type of individuals that you think are a good fit to enter this program . Gisele soares and anghelo guevara are great candidates, it students, who are people oriented and who have skills with their hands to be able to manufacturer glasses, on optical precision and who like and embrace technology and can definitely be able to give back to the profession, to find something in the profession. You have to be good at math . To some extent . Maybe not, i would say the most important aspect. But there are some math components. What is wonderful about the profession is that it does blend math, skings, biology, science, biology, business, and fashion. Such a diverse aspect of the responsibilities. You are a licensed optician. Tell me about your job, what do you like about it . What i love the most is that i can give something to my patients that they can enjoy, like seeing, the great feeling, going back again. That is something that i enjoy, helping people to see. And they rely on the prescription they severe. Gisele soares do you recommend this on other students and why . I would, definitely. If you like being handson and helping people, thats a great career. Byron how prepared are graduates when they complete the program. There are a lot of jobs out there for these guys . There are. Our placement right is well over hundred. Byron wow. With great demand for qualified opticians, because this is a great emphasis on all different models of business now offering optical. Massachusetts is a state that requires licensing or opticians and they cant operate without having a licensed optician on the premises. Byron in terms, walmart and target, any place where they would sell glasses over the counter . Exactly. Byron okay. Anghelo guevara and Gisele Soares, did you find it easy to get a job . Yes, i was working before i graduated from school. I received probably like ten offers of jobs before graduation. Byron there are more jobs . Gisele soares than opticians out byron as a legally blind person, how does it feel to know that you are helping others to see better . It is uniquely special for me and i think for students. On a daily basis they see my challenges to continue to adapt to my progressive blindness and that is something that is day one. They learned to be my sighted guide and they help guide me when i am on the board. And they are learning as expects about eye care. On how to be the expert, or patients who need them the most when you graduate. Byron you are an established optician when i started to have problems with the eyes. An irony in life. Had a problem that leads to blindness and i am pretty much there. Byron sounds like you have a Great Program going here. And great opportunities for students. What would you like to say, i will give you last word to students who may have not heard of this or thought about optician has a career . Its certainly is not better time for students to basketball involved in opticianry. It is a great year and you cannot only invest in yourself but in others. And i think what makes our Program Unique in the country is we are the only program that is partnered directly with the state association. Our students actually attend local, professional events, Even National events, and so they enter the field after graduation with a running start. Students coming back or who have already had batch alreadies degrees bachelor degrees. About 15 of the students have advanced degrees because it is such an upcoming profession. Ron run how can anyone learn more about the program . Anghelo guevara look at our website. Byron professor blair wong and anghelo guevara and Gisele Soares thank you for coming in. Good luck with your careers. Thank you. Ron run coming up next a new way of learning that brings the learning cycle down to 60 seconds. The details here on urban byron testive is an online tool that combines people and technology to help students unlake their potential and based on a unique learning system, testive individually prepares students for standardized tests and makes learning easier and faster and more fun. Founded in 2011 they have used by more than 150,000 students around the globe. Available free of charge to any student with internet connection, it has been proven to increase scores by 150 scores and act scores by an average of three points. We invited tom rose, testive cofounder and teacher since he was 15. Welcome to urban update and thank you for coming in. Thank you for having help. Byron why you and your friend began to look into this notion of unique learning . I met my cofounder at mit and we were passionate about education. High priced tutor, and i was charging 500 a session. And its started to occur to me that most of what i was doing was thoroughly repetitive and 90 that have could be offloaded to an international jen piece of software and 10 that i was adding unique value, i would preserve. We inventsed a manmachine high bride system that helped students to learn faster and cost less. Byron how do you describe your method to people . What makes it different the software is build on stop of a set that were developed at mit that dramatically improved learning speed. For someone who doesnt have as much time to spend that helps them to get to it faster. Byron what does a first time learning go through. Being a nerd, most of the things that i make come out on the computer. Yes, you have to have a computer. And lets start with the number one thing that prevents people from learning. The single biggest thing is think dont put in the time. They dont stick with it. And so the thumb one thing that can prevent that is a human teacher. They are fantastic at helping keep people on track. So we have all of our students who work with coaches, and they meet oneonone with a live human coach. And use a set of software at the same time that provides them with learning doesnt and a synergy between them. We collect data on the students performance and we can feed it to the coach to deliver a great experience in a short period of time. Byron talk to me about this immediate old method bringing the learning cycle down to 60 seconds. This makes learning more you stick with it longer. And allows you to learn faster. That is something that everybody does all the time. When you learn something it is a challenge that you cannot do. That is what the cat lift is for learning. It is a challenge. And some kind of understanding, we call that reflection. Where you realize okay, i couldnt solve the challenge and nowly understand why i couldnt do that challenge. And third and most important part is the adaptation, you have to become a better version of yourself to do something that the old you couldnt do. That learning happens all the name everyday life, and what is critical now if you wanted to learn something specific, suppose you want to learn math, one of the keefes to doing it is to take the threepart cycle and go around that loop, very quickly. And the faster you go around it faster you can grow and become a we shrink that down to a 60second loop. We give you a challenge and help you reflect and give you an adaptation to make and sends you back around. Byron give me an example . One is subjectsvrb agreement. We might show students a section that said bill and basketball was going to the park. Bill and bob was going to the park. If you cannot detect that error you failed the challenge. Now that is a great learning moment. And so we show you what the error was in that sentence, which was the verk was. Verb was. Pints out how you could understand, that the verb needs to match the subject. And we ask you to write in your own words a reflection and write that down. While you write that down you are adapting and becoming a new person who understand hows subject and verb should go together. And we sent you back in and give now you get sally and jane was going to the park. And now you know sally and jane were going to the park. Down to 60 seconds. Kids these days are smarter than ever. Byron you have. Teaching in in capacity since you were 15 . I have worked, taught first grade, third grade, fifth grade, middle school and high school, grad students and senior saturdays. I love it all. I like helping people learn. It is rewarding. Byron 150,000 students around the world have used your program . I havent tout each one personally. Yes. Byron i am talking about your program. We work in tremendously large numbers. That is the advantage of using software you get scalebility and leverage. This is dramatically better and can make it available to everyone. Ron run what type of students average students, coming out of high school or students who are better, or . It adapts to the person. It will adjust to you and only give you questions that are at the level of difficulty that meets you perfectly. That is one of the things that is very important to keep students engaged. If you give people challenges that are too differ they are frustrated. If you give them challenges that too easy they become bored. Byron we have a graphic of the website. A few photos there for anyone who may want more information. If anybody wants to find out about this, they should go to testive. Com. Soundses like you have it right there. This is amazing. For anybody out there who is pesky sats and act tests. Tom, thank you for coming in.
