Underwear, it must be tricky because you had all of these other jobs. Youve been an actor, youve been a producer, but when we talk about underwear, certainly on tv, theres a lot of words you cant use. Yeah, yeah, like look. I say like, man apples or like seth yep. The plums. [ laughter ] seth the plums . Because you say look you say genitals or you say balls and women start to go like, did you just say that . [ light laughter ] like, why did you have to say that, that way . Like, your tone of voice is off or something. Seth but they are okay won its a little better. Seth yeah. Like they go, wait, wait, wait, what is he talking about . That split second that they dont know exactly what youre talking about, saves you. Seth you come home with a girl and she says i want to go to the farmers market. There you go. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] seth so, we had gayle king was on the show last night and i heard, is this true . That you had a dog named oprah and cat named gayle. Cat named gayle, yeah. Seth so youre obviously a fan of oprah and gayle. Oh you know, at first i her, because every time oprah would make reference to what was wrong with hip hop culture. Seth yeah. It was something that was like on my cd. Seth yeah. It was like the largest largest debut in hip hop album. I said, im never gonna go there. Like, shes never gonna have me on her couch. Seth right. So i was like, if we cant be friends at least lets be enemies. Seth sure. Right, exactly. Thats the second one. You know, so the fans dont feel like youre laughed at for not being able to be there when the a listers are. Seth right, of course. You know, so when we did come around finally and i was on the show i was like, hey, you k all that stuff i was saying, i didnt mean that. [ light laughter ] so, you know seth so you got on well when you met. Yeah. Seth and you guys are in a good place right now. You and oprah. And i met gayle at, strange enough, i met her at a i met her through bette midler. Seth so you met i would not have gussed that. Yeah. [ light laughter ] seth how did 50 cent meet gayle, bette midler would have been my millionth choice. Yeah. [ light laughter ] her organization, nypr, like they kind of are responsible all the green in the city. She had me come to like a banquet and it was really interesting because they give you they gave me tables for free. Seth uh huh. But the tables were like really expensive. Seth they are, at those charity events. At the banquets, like youd be there like, how much . [ light laughter ] and then, they she had a spotlight. She knew what she was doing. Like there was a spotlight, up there. Boom, like a big batlight. And it was like, so how much are you how many cherry trees are you going to buy . [ light laughter ] seth right. And then the cherry trees are like 2,500 a piece. I was like, wait. I want to know where my trees are so i can go carve my name in seth yeah, ill give you a cherry. [ light laughter ] and so and then did you tell gayle . Does gayle know that you have a feline gayle in your home . Yeah, she had already heard. Seth okay. Was she happy . Did you take it as a compliment. Well no, but she was like well, what is he doing here . When bette said seth oh, when she saw you at the she was like, what is he doing here . Like you know a gangster rapper, at the banquet for trees. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] and then she found out you built a park, and she was probably pretty happy. She was like, oh he built a park . And then this is what opened the doors for the communications between me and oprah. Because she went back and she told her. Seth thats great. Well, everything comes full circle. Well, its always so wonderful to have you here. Can i keep these as a Christmas Present for myself . Yeah, yeah, yeah. Youre supposed to use those. Seth okay, im gonna use them. When you feel like somethings gonna happen. Seth okay, great. [ laughter ] i might like call you and say, alright, 50 heres how the nights going. Does it sound good . Listen, listen, i think shes ready. [ light laughter ] set everybody. [ cheers and applause ] frigo crown underwear is available through iwearfrigo. Com and at Nieman Marcus starting in december. Our next guest is an nbc news correspondent who also contributes to msnbc. She traveled to more than 40 states covering the donald trump president ial campaign. Please welcome to the show, katy tur. [ cheers and applause ] . . Seth thank you so much for being here. Thanks for having me. This is very exciting. Seth congratulations on a fantastic job covering one of the most unique president ial campaign. I appreciate it, unique. Seth i think its safe to say this never happened. You travelled on a press plane for over a year basically . Well, no. Seth okay. Because he didnt have a press plane for quite awhile. Yes. Seth and theres something glamorous about being on a plane with all of your colleagues and you celebrated your birthday on a plane. I did. Seth and here you are with a little champagne. And it looks fairly glamorous, plastic cups, but still. [ laughter ] yeah, it was i think the best champagne they could provide. Seth there you, go but then is this the food you ate for your birthday . Yes. Seth that is less glamorous. [ laughter ] that i think shows us the underbelly of when we see press loading onto a plane. Thats about as far as i got through it and then i put the cover on and i cried a little into my meal. Seth so part of covering donald trump the way you did, is you were actually on the scene. You were at the rallies with these incredibly passionate supporters and because you were so close to it, did that make you less surprised than the rest of the media at the outcome of this election . I was not surprised at all. Seth not surprised at all . No. Seth okay. I mean when you went to his rallies and saw the excitement that was there and the enthusiasm that was there, you just knew that every Single Person that went there because they liked donald trump, was going to go to the polls and he just had this momentum behind him. They werent listening to the day in and day out of some of the more controversial things he said. They were taking him seriously but they werent taking him literally like the media was taking him so as it came in, i certainly wasnt surprised. We thought maybe like my producer and i thought maybe we had stockholm syndrome because we kept saying, no, we think hes going to win because the polls didnt agree with our opinions. Seth this does this idea that there are people inside a bubble and outside a bubble. Part of going out with trump is you guys did go outside of the bubble and is that a Fair Assessment that you i mean if you consider the bubble to be new york city, washington d. C. , and maybe the coastal cities and the more urban areas, then yeah, i mean we definitely did go outside of the bubble. The rest of the country would say, well, you know, youre not in our bubble. Seth right. And what we saw was a lot of frustration. And a lot of frustration not only with the news media. There was a ton of that, but also frustration with washington and what was going on there and a feeling like they hadnt been represented. They hadnt been taken care of things. And donald trump, even though he isnt a perfect messenger, he was a perfect messenger because he was imperfect. Seth and you mention sort of the negative attitudes toward the media. Donald trump did as much to stoke that as anyone. And he would he called you out by name a few times at his rallies. Little katy. Seth where he called you and he told you to be quiet, i believe, at one point. He did, yes. Seth and did were people how did people treat you at his rallies . And did they know who you were right away or did they find out well they knew who i was i think from early on. The people that would go to the rallies often times they would come up and say, god, i saw you on msnbc with chris matthews, great job. And then as it kept going and he kept calling me out, then more and more people started to know who i was and there would be a lot of jeering, but oneonone a lot of the supporters would come back and take selfies and were excited to meet a lot of the members of the media. Some of them. Others would go by the press pen and yell at us and call us liars. Seth and is it true you had a rally with your hair . I did. This is a good story. Seth so is what happened . So we were in grand rapids, michigan. This was late december no, early december. It was right before christmas. And were at this basketball arena and im in the bathroom of this basketball arena. I am curling my hair for nightly news over a trash can and a dirty sink and theres just like woman after woman is coming in to use the bathroom and im just trying to mind my own business. Dont mind me, im curling my hair, its totally normal. And a lovely lady stopped me and said, you know, im a hairdresser here in town, can i help you . I said, sure, of course you can help me. So she curled my hair honestly, its the best my hair ever looked. [ laughter ] i looked great on nightly news, then donald trump took the stage and this was around the time that people were starting to notice his relationship with Vladimir Putin and his affinity toward Vladimir Putin and they were bringing up the accusations that are out there against putin, that he had something to do with the murdering of journalists. Seth uhhuh. That are out there and donald trump started talking about it on stage and started joking about killing journalists. He was saying, oh, no, no, i wouldnt do that. But hes joking about it and the entire arena, remember the press pen is like the tiny little, you know, enclave in the middle, this circle in the middle. The entire arena starts booing and cheering at the idea of us dying and in that crowd is that woman who was curling my hair. [ laughter ] i didnt think that was very nice at all. I mean seth she turned on you. She turned on me. Seth she has beautiful hair, bue yeah, get rid of her. [ laughter ] seth so i want to ask, because you mentioned his message and that he was the perfect messenger for this time. Where will his support be if he fails to follow through on some of the bigger, maybe sort of harder to achieve things, like a wall and like a sort of Muslim Registry . How patient do you think his supporters will be . Thats a really good question. Its a question were not going to have an answer to until that stuff actually happens. But what i can say is when we muslim ban. Waffle on a wall even, talking about fencing or a cyber wall. We thought maybe his supporters would take issue with that because they were the core issues of his campaign. And so we would ask them, you know, what do you think . Is this is going to change your support . Are you going to get upset if he doesnt follow through with this. And 99 times out of 100, they would say, oh, no, no, its okay, we give him the benefit of the doubt. We believe that hes going to do whats right and if he feels thats not right at the time then were okay with it or they to stop him. So they gave him the benefit of the doubt in a way that no other politician has enjoyed and im sure every other politician wishes they had. Seth yes. But if he goes on and say these policies arent as affectual as he wants them to be, say he doesnt bring as many jobs back as he has promised, were going to find out if the support that he has cracks but as of now it seems like the people that voted for him voted for the person rather than the policy. Seth now, i wanted to give really appreciated from you is obviously we have been looking to you guys for clips throughout this campaign. And i know, ive watched. [ light laughter ] seth you youve covered this Incredible Campaign that was like nothing youve ever seen and we always spoke of you as someone who always kept her cool and one of our favorite clips from the entire campaign, you were giving basically a report in a Hotel Ballroom and this happened behind you and we were so impressed at how you reported it. Take a look. Its important to note that hilly the stage is falling apart behind us, if you can see this. Seth ice cold. [ laughter and applause ] you missed the best part though when i kind of rolled my eyes and said, anyway. Seth yeah. As if we couldnt see anything else. Nothing is going to phase you. Seth well, thank you so much. And youre working on a book about covering this campaign. Im working on a book. Yeah, a memoir that documents the wild ride i had in this campaign and everything that i saw and it help hopefully was as popular as he was and also i might be entertaining along the way, i hope. Seth we were lucky to have you there covering this campaign and were very lucky youre writing a book about it. Thank you so much for being here. [ laughter ] thank you for having me. Carson hey everybody its carson daly here with another edition of last call. Tonights coming to you from skylark new york city. On the show tonight were gonna jared hess. Were also gonna turn you on to the music of summer cannibals. But first luke cage is the latest superhero from the marvel universe to get his own tv series and weve got the man himself to tell you all about it. Lets go to surly goat. This is mike colter. . I feel like youre one set of curls from tearing through that jacket right now. Okay. Full disclosure. Full disclosure. When you get this marvel pe like 205, you know. I was in the world of you know, im an actor. Im playing roles that, you know, allow me to do a lot of talking, not a lot of hurting people. Get this job and, you know, im like, well i guess i got a workout. They go, yeah, i workout. Whatever. So im like, okay. So i put on 30 pounds, im like 235 now. So i bought this jacket when i was normal. So now when i go to fittings, because its all about stylists, they tell you always wear something thats a little small because then it looks better on you. On camera. Thats a secret that im if youre in shape. If youre in shape rather. So yeah, while this jacket looks, kind of, i think it looks arms over my head without tearing the back out open. So its part of the job. . Im mike colter and im playing luke cage in the Netflix Marvel series called luke cage. . Domingo colon. Im guessing thats you. [ grunting ] [ punching ] . I guess you guys havent heard about me. This character has been something that people have been waiting for for 30 40 some odd years and so thats not lost on me. When youre playing a character that has so much expectation and is deep in so much relevant history and culture it can be overwhelming so i try to block all that out and i start to approach it like any other role. And what made me so interested in playing him is that heres a guy who didnt really want to be a superhero and it didnt really involved in other peoples lives so i was like that makes sense to me. Hed rather just be, you know, to himself. You know, find a woman he can settle down with and kind of go about his business but thats not an interesting tale. So were gonna do Something Different with luke cage. . It is a hip hop western. The musical backdrop is so full. Its r and b, its all these really cool artists. And then he comes into this town, which is harlem, a small part of new york city and this town has this leadership thats already in place. And as we all know in westerns, this is something that go with whether its good for them or not because they dont have a choice. Well luke steps on the scene and people figure out that hes, you know, more than capable of doing something and so eventually the establishment finds out about luke and we have a slow burn. Its kind of churning, slowly, slowly, slowly, until boom, it explodes. Give us the money. Yo. I dont like your tone. Excuse me . Youre being disrespectful. Its unnecessary. Yo amous. What up . Show the man what you famous for. [ light laughter ] . [ screaming ] . We want to make sure that luke cage that we are creating feels like the luke cage of todays world and not the one that was in blacksploitation era. You know, take some of those things that we started within blacksploitation and we still pay homage to those things. Theres a certain kind of badassery thats going on. Theres a certain kind of way that the series is shot that gives you those hero poses. Those things that you would see in a blacksploitation film or a western. Youve taught us that badassery is a word. It is. I found that if you say it enough and people start to actually say it as well. It becomes a word. And we all go back to webster. Well you know, webster was a man. If he decided this was a word so why cant we throwing words and then see what sticks. I think badassery is a good word. The origin will be you. I hope so. . Daredevil rolled out. That was the first character they did on netflix and daredevils story had several characters such as claire temple, played by rosario dawson. That character kind of segued over into Jessica Jones where my character also was established because they have a romance that needed to be told. Once thats shown, the defenders, which we will start filming at some point, very soon, we then put our stories together and we fight crime together. Organically well have to figure out how this happens because we dont come into a room and go, hey, i know you, you know me. Lets fight crime together. We dont know each other so we have to establish all that. . This role came along at a time in my life where i had signed onto a show that shot in los angeles, which almost never happens nowadays. So it was like, wow. A show shoots in los angeles and i live in los angeles, this would be a good time to start a family. So we decided to do that. You know, as soon as she gets pregnant this opportunity comes so my wife is in the room and i remember this day distinctly, it was like in november, im talking to my team and theyre like telling me all this stuff about how great it is and im going yeah, thats awesome. My wifes sitting in the bed, shes like cause she wants to be in on it, like whats going on . But all i can here was, im moving, and my wifes pregnant, and shes going to lose her mind. And so i told her this and the color just rushed from her face and she just went, and she starting balling. So that was her reaction and i this is why we sacrifice. Yes, this is why we sacrifice. Yeah, yeah. . Carson that was mike colter. Luke cage premiers september 30th on netflix. Coming up next summer cannibals is the music tonight from teragram ballroom. Well be back. Back in 2004 jared hess broke out as a director to watch thanks to his work behind the camera on the cult film napoleon dynamite. Since then hes been responsible for films like nacho libre, gentleman broncos and his latest masterminds. From churchill in west hollywood, heres tonights spotlight. . The beard, i think its just a product of laziness and a lack of hygiene when youre directing and then it just kind of you just kind of live with it after a while. What was your style in high school, middle school . Unfortunate. It was very unfortunate. . My name is jared hess, im a film director and screenwriter and i directed a movie thats coming out called masterminds. . My name is david ghantt. I always felt i was destined for a life of adventure. What would you do with a Million Dollars . Probably start my own nice. You know, put a cap in their ass. [ gunshot ] oh that burns oh my gosh david, let me see. Oh god i think that bullet just went straight between your cheeks. Yeah, feels like it just grazed my biscuits right there betwixt them. . The film masterminds is based on a true story of a group of people that pulled off one of the largest cash heists in us history in like 1997. There was a guy named david ghantt who was working for the loomis fargo Armored Car Company and he was very flirty lady named kelly campbell. They decided that they were going to rob 17 Million Dollars. Just drive off with it one night. But the poor Decision Making that followed really messed them up. He took all the security tapes but forgot about one camera and so when the fbi showed up the day after the heist there was david ghantt loading all this money into the truck. Small oversight but big deal. There he is, the man of your hell live here with us forever. Its like youre marrying both of us, david. Me and momma. David, have you given much thought to what youll be doing for your honeymoon . Yeah, ive got a few plans, yeah. All good. Ill tell you what he wont be doing if he doesnt lose some weight. [ laughter ] . I was in high school when it happened. I remember seeing it on the news, there was like a 20 20 special about it. You know, everyone kept saying, how dumb can you get . You know, these criminals, they pulled off one of the biggest heists ever but everything they did was so ridiculous. I mean, it felt like a cartoon almost. The plan was to lay low and not spend any money for like the next 8 or 9 months and by that point it would become a cold case with the fbi. But they couldnt help themselves and immediately started spending lavishly. They bought like a mansion in new pairs of boobs for like a lot of their friends. They sent a hitman down to mexico to kill david ghantt, but then david ghantt and the hitman became friends and nothing ever came of it. It was very ripe for comedy. My first phone conversation with david ghantt when i was talking to him about the heist and as we were prepping the film he was like, yeah, i can see how a lot of people think this is pretty funny. . The guy that pulled off the heist, david ghantt always had an abundance of facial hair. Zach galifianakis hes always got a beard so. There was just a lot of facial hair involved in the heist, in the original one so we kinda tried to stay true to that. That was totally his real hair. He was like, i dont like the way wigs look, they look totally fake. I was like, well zach, i want to cut some bangs on you and hes like, im in it for some bangs, lets do it. We were kinda going for like the allman brothers band kinda just like a classic dude that cares about his hair. After a while hes like, you know what . I really like this. My wife likes it too so im going to keep it. . Im interested in eccentric characters, i guess. Napoleon, yeah, yeah. Even though it was very autobiographical situation. I think new generations of High School Kids discover the film for the first time and just can relate to the massive amounts of awkwardness. Had a lot of fun with that film. I met my wife jerusha in film school and we started writing napoleon dynamite together we shot the film in like 23 days in my hometown of preston, idaho. It was a very fairy tale experience for everyone involved that ended up launching our career and everyone that worked on it. You know, after my mom saw the film she was like, well that was a lot of embarrassing family material. And my brother who, you know, a lot of the napoleons dialog is almost a direct transcript of stuff that he would say when he was like in middle school. He saw the film, was like, that . Halloweens right around the corner. What other characters of yours do you think deserve to be Walking Around on halloween night . Anything from this movie . You know we, yeah, hopefully, you know, someone will cut their hair like zach and be david ghantt. That should be an easy Halloween Costume to emulate. Just can tear into your dads old polo shirts and jean shorts and get some puffy white Jerry Seinfeld shoes and should . Carson that was jaraed hess. Masterminds is in theaters september 30th. And well be right back with more music from teragram ballroom. . Carson to keep up to date with all the very latest Celebrity News videos and pictures be sure to check out . . .
