Hundreds of thousands without power. Reporter the eye of Hurricane Matthew is just east of us. This storm has arrived here in daytona beach. We are seeing the wind gusts come in waves. If you take a look at where im standing right now. We will show you some damage here. Part of the roof has been blown off this building. There is some debris as well. There are some downed trees. This is the front of our hotel. The worst of the storm has yet to come. Many people are preparing for yet another wave of Hurricane Matthew. Sunrise but no slowdown in lets remember, the storm has only passed half our state. This is not over. Reporter the eye expected to move dangerously close to shore as the storm marches northward along floridas east coast. Bringing the heavy rain at high tide and raising the risk and fears of catastrophic storm surge. We are very concerned ability storm surge. And the worst effects are still likely to come. Reporter overnight, Hurricane Matthew battered florida. The massive storm brought damaging winds and drenching rain. Somewhat lessened with the eye remaining well offshore. Still at times, wind gusts were so strong, First Responders had to get themselves to safety. Power lines ripped from their poles across the region. Transformers exploding, leaving hundreds of thousands without power. Meantime, many are riding out the storm in shelters. Hundreds of pets housed with their owners, still unsure when they are able to go back home. Meteorologists say offshore dangerous. If you are in an area that has been told to evacuate and the authorities are telling you that you still have time to evacuate, i want to personally plead with you to get out right now. Reporter millions still at risk as Hurricane Matthew churns in the atlantic. As we wait for the worst of the storm to pass, there is a curfew in place. That went into effect at midnight. Reporting live in daytona beach, back to you. Christa has it seemed to you that most people have heeded the warnings and gotten out . Is that what you are seeing . Yeah. You know, we were listening to local officials this morning. They told us that 44,000 people are in shelters here in volusia county. That encompasses daytona beach. They were saying they have never had that many people in a shelter. Had here on daytona beach. That is a sign that people are heeding the warnings. As you can see, there arent any cars on the road. We have seen a couple of them. But there are people patrolling, officers patrolling the streets to make sure that people who live here are abiding by that curfew. To make sure they stay safe. Kris sarah, the storm has been hitting you for hours now. Is it coming in waves or has it been pretty steady . How have you seen it intensify and change over the past few i would say its coming in waves. So i mean, it is definitely strong. But at times, you feel stronger gusts than others. If you take a look at where im standing right now, you can see this is just another band of rain that is passing through. There is actually a car thats driving on this street. I can see it. I dont think we can see it yet with our camera. It is going ever so slowly down the street. We were in that position an hour ago. We were trying to find a we couldnt even drive down the street. There was a wind tunnel. It wasnt safe. You can see, take a look here. This is the car that is passing by. Not a wise thing to do. Local officials trying to make sure that people stay off the streets. Christa that is always the biggest danger. Flying debris. Thank you so much for your report. As you see there, they are seeing t now and into the overnight hours as well. Kris we have seen it hug the coast there. It has not made landfall . Chris no. Technically, the midpoint of the eye has to cross over land. That is not the case. The eye wall, the western side of the eye wall has been very close to the east coast of florida. Occasionally, when that eye wall wobbles back and catches the coastline, you get a gust near 100 miles an hour. We saw it across cape beach and points south, the Barrier Islands had some wind gusts close to one hundred. Day know no beach itself, port orange, this is just beginning to see some of the western edge of the eye wall relax off of it. Im willing to bet you, sarah, stronger winds, a half an hour or an hour ago with some of these bursts that came through. The western edge of the eye wall pinwheeled back. You note the motion. It is still parallel to the coastline. This hurricane has been parallel on the it has worked its way up florida. The Silver Lining to the storm system here is that the eye hasnt moved on shore. Because then you drag in the strongest winds with the eye wall. Especially the northeastern side. This is a bad storm. There is going to be damage. We are still concerned about the storm surge. Along the coastline of northeastern florida, georgia, and South Carolina. But it wasnt the worstcase scenario for much of the east coast of florida. Including melbourne itself. The strongest winds have been along the space coast. Points north toward daytona beach. Saturday, category one. Close to the carolina coastline. Then this bends back around. And it getsed forced back toward the bahamas. In a much weakened state. But it will get forced back to the south by High Pressure. That High Pressure builds in our forecast for the weekend. Just slight shower chance out there. We will talk more on that ahead. Kris ll more than half a Million People now without power. One person has died. This is where you push 120 miles an hour. Essentially, in the northeastern quad rabbit. Quadrant. That has stayed offshore as the storm has been parallelling the coastline there. Has been no official landfall with the center of the eye itself moving onshore. Regardless, we are had a lot of hurricaneforce gusts. Very close to the coastline. Especially once you got your way toward Cape Canaveral and then back over toward daytona beach. The storm, a continue to turn to the north. Kind of bending around the South Carolinanorth carolina coastline. Then pivoting back to the south. As we get through the line here. What becomes more of a concern from this point out, obviously, we are still concerned with the hurricaneforce winds along the coastline. Also flooding rain and storm surge. That will likely be a six to ninefoot storm surge along the georgia coastline. Up into portions of the South Carolina coastline. That, combined with a lot of rain. Trying to work its way back into the ocean here. Of flooding along the coastline. That is why officials are still urging folks, you know, if they have evacuation orders along the coast in georgia and South Carolina, heed them. Do so at this point.
