Just as students get ready to head back to class, the citys Buildings Department is really paying attention to the abandoned homes that are scattered along the routes the kids walk when they go to school. A lot of those homes are being torn down and left as empty lots. Wgns Lourdes Duarte visited a neighborhood that had several homes torn down a year ago to see what a difference demolition can make. Think about this. More than 18,000 abandoned homes in chicago. The city tackling them one at a time. In some places youve got blocks with nearly half the homes torn down, and residents are worried about what comes next. A year ago, this two story abandoned home came down in chicagos southside. It wasnt the only one. In fact, last year about 750 of them were torn down. It was a couple weeks, they did it fast. Mashon dixon lived right next door to one. It was actually an abandoned building where a lot of people sell drugs. The building cleared out, all as a way to keep crime down on a block that was riddled with it. So what has happened since this was torn down . A lot of gang members dont really hang on this block. Just down the street on south laflin, mr. Early noticed the same thing. He actually now has 3 empty lots right next to him. So every time i see an x thats a house thats being torn down. How many have you seen so far . Oh quite a few. Quite a few because the city, like so many others, dealing with high crime sees this as a way out. Tana mccoy, professor at roosevelt university, knows the numbers. Some studies have shown that Violent Crimes are more likely to occur around abandoned buildings. Heres how it all shakes out. Since 2005, a 50 increase in calls to police for service around abandoned buildings. Thats 7 to 9 police calls a day, or 1500 city dollars going to each abandoned building every year. So the red x already marking the future of this abandoned home. Theyre going to tear it down, what do you think about that . I think they should fix it up cause now i have a vacant lot. Now i have to try to keep it up. Mary houston sits on her porch afraid the tear downs will mean they will become a forgotten block with fewer City Services coming their way. The department of buildings promising thats not the case. We never want demolition to be the first option. We want these houses to come back to habitable use. But that hasnt been possible. They continue to work with banks to make sure the buildings are kept up. But fewer people investing in these properties means the city is finding the dollars to tear them down. How many . Depends on who owns them and how theyre kept up. Weve been focusing on the safe passage routes to make sure that kids are safe when they start in the fall. That means that by the end of the summer, another 17 will come down. Mary and so many others on her block say, yes, crime is down but shes worried about long term effects. Investors dont want to come into those neighborhoods and people become demoralized. But when youre talking about children walking by abandoned buildings, demolishment is probably the smart policy move. The Buildings Department says it is really making people abide by the citys vacant building ordinance which means if a home is empty, it has to be secure, clean and winterized. Otherwise it makes the list for possible demolition, which can get expensive. It can cost anywhere from 18 to 20thousand dollars to tear down a single home.
