jackie bange has the night off. all of the snow led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights. but tonight, the airlines are trying to get back in the air. wgn is live at o'hare airport with more. marcella? >> reporter: 5.1 inches of snow fell at o'hare today. that is a record for this day, december 4th. some breaking news to tell you about, we're not sure if the snow caused this, but we have reports coming into the newsroom that a united regional jet was taxiing on the runway here at o'hare when it collided with an atlas cargo plane. 747 united jet, no injuries that we are being told. passengers already off the plane. and most likely at the terminal right now just waiting to get on another plane. we don't note if the plane was departing or arriving. pretty much all the information we have got right now. we're going to get it confirmed for you during the newscast, but again a united regional jet collided on the runway, taxiing with also an atlas air cargo plane. no injuries reported and passengers are off the plane. that's pretty much the only problem that we've had out here today. with any first significant snow, you can always count on a few things. you can always count on there being delays and cancellations at o'hare and you can always count on the city having all of the snow and salt trucks on the streets and also the kids will find the best spot to have a snowball fight. with 325 cancellations at o'hare, you'd think we'd find someone who was stranded. no, just some very happy people like the brawn family who can't get to get back to florida. what's the weather like where you're going? >> about 75. >> you're happy about that too? >> i'm so happy, can't wait to swim with any friends. >> you didn't play in the snow? >> i like both. >> reporter: who could blame them? it's cold and wet and messy especially trying to get anywhere. the commissioner of streets and sanitation gives his crews high marks for keeping up with the snowy main streets. now, in the chicago area right now, but there is a lake effect snow warning for northwest indiana and southwest michigan. those areas are going to hit -- to be hit pretty hard around midnight. the warnings in effect through monday. we're talking about east of 65, that could get nailed really hard and one to three inches of snow possibly falling per hour. so they're going to be hammered over there. jim ramsey will have more information for you in the weather -- in his weather report and then also we'll try to get more information about that plane. those two planes that collided here at o'hare. back to you now bob. to the south, the kankakee community found itself within the heavier snowfall belt and was blanketed by as much as five to six inches of snow. the impact was actually mild with only a few fender-benders to report. joliet received its share of the first heavy snowfall of a season. the city got away with about a 3.5-inch accumulation by noon, enough to bring out the snow plows and salt trucks. one man is dead after the car he was driving slammed into a concrete overpass support pillar on the south side this morning in chicago. the accident occurred in the 3800 block of south ashland just before 5:30. 21-year-old yurielsilva was pronounced dead at the hospital, two male passengers were also in the car and were also taken to the hospital, their conditions are not known. the cause of the accident has not been released and it is not known if the snowy weather was a factor. three bouncers at a club in the edge lwood neighborhood were shot. the men were 41, 40 and 37 years of ages. and were taken to area hospitals. two left the scene in serious condition, the injuries of the third victim not known. after the bouncers escorted the man out of the club, he returned to the scene and shot the victim and then fled in a white van. the suspect was in his late 30s and was wearing red clothing. the former chicago housing authority officer fatally shot along with a police officer last week in a south side chicago alley was laid to rest today. 44-year-old steven peters was buried at the holy sepulcher cemetery. he was killed along with michael flist who was investigating a burglary to peters' car. police have charged herring with the murders. he was a parolee. herring is being held without bond. chicogoans coming to terms with losing the man who could be called the heart of chicago baseball. they will get a chance to bid a final farewell to ron santo next week. funeral services for the cubs legend and broadcaster have been set for next week at holy name cathedral neighborhood. santo died of complications from bladder cancer and he was in arizona. the all-star third baseman has been an inspiration to many on and off the baseball field. public visitation begins at 4:00 on thursday. santo's funeral will be at holy name at 10:00 friday morning. seating will be limited for the public. wgn and cb tv will air the funeral services live on friday
