More than 150thousand american and allied troops stormed the beaches of normandy, to liberate europe from nazi germany. Nearly 45hundred lost their lives that day. Thousands more were killed in the following three months of the battle. The dday invasion was a crucial turning point in World War Two, that sealed the downfall of hitlers nazi regime. Police in seattle are holding the man who they say shot three people one fatally at Seattle Pacific university. Andrew spencer is following the investigation. Flowers lead at the university paid tribute to the victims of the tragedy. Coming together as a community, a community that relies on cheeses for strength. We will need that. Police say the 26 yearold suspect armed with a shotgun and a knife entered a Science Building at the school on thursday. Opened fire. I walked into a hallway and saw one of my classmates frantically saying somebody had been shot and lock down the building. 3 people were shot before students took him down. A Student Monitor inside the facility observed the suspect reloaded the shotgun and was able to stop the individual at that point. He peppers great demand and got him to the ground. At that point police say others jumped in subduing the suspect until police could arrive. This is a tragedy. The victims families it is heartbreaking for them but if we find anything good its that the people stepped up. The story is not about an evil act but about the heroes who stood in the gunmans way. Regular citizens step up to do the right thing and in this case i think it prevented a more horrible tragedy. Former wgn radio reporter Larry Schreiner has died of cardiac arrest. He was 73. Schreiner was a former Police Officer in skokie and chicago, before he went into broadcasting. He actually shot his own video and sold it to tv stations, before he talked about those stories on the radio. Some of the stories included john wayne gacy, the browns chicken murders in palatine, and the death of mayor harold washington. Schreiner left wgn radio in 2005. He is survived by his twin sons and two grandchildren. Police superintendent Garry Mccarthy is expected to spend several more days in the hospital, after undergoing a procedure to unblock his arteries. Judy wang is live at northwestern hospital with more. The second in command says that superintended Kerry Mccarthy is alert and cracking jokes. He will likely spend several more days here at the hospital. He will continue to get updates on whats happening in the department as he recovers. He underwent angioplasty. Doctors determined one artery was completely blocked. A second artery was 80 percent blocked. He did not feel well thursday morning and took a cab to the hospital the superintendents spokesman issued a brief statement saying the procedure went well the superintendent appreciate everyones well wishes and is looking forward to being back on patrol with his fellow officers very soon. Mccarthy did not suffer a heart attack but a city hall source says he did. The mayor ran the new worvisite5 minutes yesterday afternoon. The superintendent was in good spirits. We were fooling around he had his family around he was watching the white sox game. There is no timetable as to when he will return to duty. His colleagues say the hardest part will be keeping him from coming back to work too soon. President obama is defending his decision to trade five taliban generals for the freedom of Sergeant Bowe bergdahl. Bergdahls fellow soldiers say he deserted his post, leaving his weapon and combat gear behind. But cnn is quoting unnamed u. S. Officials speculating that bergdahl may have tried to escape from his taliban captors. They say they wont know until they talk to bergdahl himself. The deal to free bergdahl took weeks. And the Obama Administration says it had to keep the deal a secret even from congress. If the fact that we were doing this exchange had come out and become public, there was any real risk it would have been scuttled and that he could have been killed and that our special operators involved in this could have been in great danger. Despite criticism of the prisoner swap from both republicans and democrats, president obama claims the controversy over the exchange is politically motivated. A preschool teacher in the western suburbs faces child pornography charges. Berwyn police say they caught Richard Gertler trading pornographic images online. They say they found more pictures at his home in oak park and more files on his computer. Gertler is being held on bond and is due in court on june 25 th. Authorities did not name the schools where he worked. A man who crashed a stolen car into a house in mundelein has been charged with murder. Howard dibbern is being held on a two Million Dollar bond in the death of karen scavelli, who died from blunt force trauma. Her body was found monday night in her home in island lake. The next day, police were called to a bar in mundelein where an employees purse was stolen. A responding officer saw dibbern driving off and chased him. Dibbern crashed the car, which belonged to scavelli. Three 8th graders will not be graduating on stage after making antisemitic remarks to a fellow student. A public hearing was held yesterday to discuss whats been happening at Ogden International school. Lisa wolf clemente says three boys made derogatory comments to her son and taunted him with pictures of concentration camps. The boys were initially suspended, but clemente is upset with the schools principal. She says he didnt follow his own guidelines and took several days to act. Its front page news that he continues to lie and lie. It is disturbing and disgusting its a slap in the jewish communities face. Stand up and say you dont recognize it dont say you acted immediately because you did not. Clemente says the principal responded with a safety action plan that included having security escort her son in and out of school. She says her son is not a threat and should not be excluded. Charter school students, teachers and clergy marched against gun violence in chicago. Hundreds of people took part in yesterdays i am for peace march and rally. And state, to 36th and wabash. The student say they believe positive peer pressure can make a difference. They chose the start of Summer Vacation to launch their peace campaign. If positive peer pressure isnt enough to combat gang violence, police also have a new tool. Its a hightech Gun Crime Intelligence Center in the west loop. From there, police can monitor surveillance cameras in high crime neighborhoods. Chicago police work with federal firearms agents to link crimes to one another, through data about the guns used in those crimes. Intelligence gathering and sharing will allow police to identify criminals and tie them to several crimes at a time. Its National Donut day. Its time to think about protecting yourself from the sun when you head outside. Skin cancer is the Fastest Growing cancer in the united states. I recently sat down with a skin cancer survivor from glenview to talk about how her life changed after being diagnosed with melanoma. Leave my kids to leave my job leave my husband and co and the one. I lived at the Clinical Trial for close to three months. I was in quarantine. Nobody could see me. Shares traveled all the country for treatment after being diagnosed with stage for skin cancer. Since then she has made it her lifes work to educate people about the danger of too much sun. Statistics are grim. Its the fastestgrowing cancer in the u. S. Claiming one life every 57 minutes. She says for those who have already been diagnosed with melanoma. There is hope but the patient has to be diligent and has defined the right medical practitioner to partner with. Somebody who is aggressive in research. To spread the word she is teaming up with a chicago area it dermatologist. The message is simple but lifesaving, melanoma can be stopped if parents get on board early on. Over 80 percent of the sun damage that you get will happen before you are 18. More and more kids are being diagnosed with skin cancer. Some as young as 10 years old. Parents need to start by leading by example. If you are not wearing your sunscreen your kids wont wear it. What i advocate is something even better than sunscreen is spf clothing what we call sun shield. Also hoping to create awareness in the area in terms of research and Clinical Trials. She says unfortunately chicago is behind other cities when it comes to health care and treatment for skin care. We need more trials. We get passed over time and time again by drug companies. Truck driver Ralph Peterson says he was going south on ashland when he saw a car speeding over a bridge. He says the car veered into oncoming traffic and hit his truck head on. That ruptured his fuel tank, so there was fuel everywhere. Peterson says thats when he went to help the other driver. A rushed to his vehicle to see if he was ok. He was stuck. I try to pull the Steering Wheel to free him to help him out because there was diesel fuel leaking all over the wanted to make sure he got out safely. The driver of the car was taken to the hospital. Blue island fire Officials Say his injuries are not life threatening. No charges have been filed. They say bourque shot and killed three Police Officers, and wounded two more, during a rampage through a New Brunswick neighborhood wednesday. Bourque was arrested in front of someones home. The lockdown that was issued during the search has been lifted. Police say they dont have a motive, but they say bourques Facebook Page has antipolice messages on it. North korea says it arrested an american tourist for violating its laws. A state News Agency Says the man entered the country on april 29th, and was caught breaking the law, and conducting activities not consistent with his stated purpose for entering the country.
