The reporter well, vanessa, we know that secretary pollack is saying that the primary focus of this investigation is operator error, but we know it was a scary morning commute, for some 50 passengers that were on the so called ghost train for at least four stops before it actually came to a halt. A nightmare commute for 50 passengers on the redline from braintree. It started around 6 00 a. M. , when the operator couldnt get the train to start, and asked to bypass mode. The operator exited the train to undertake that procedure, and while the operator was not on board the train, the train left the station. Sources tell me 28 year mbta veteran David Vasquez was the operator of this train and because it was in bypass mode, both sets of brakes on the train engaged and the trains prevention collision system was disengaged. Nine minutes after the initial call that the train itself whats operating without a motor person, the train came to a stop, outside of north quincy station. Passengers were taken to the j. F. K. Umass stop where they got off the train. That is the primary focus of this investigation. 50 people were on this redline train that went four stops or five miles before it was eventually halted. Now, sources tell me that 28 year mbta veteran David Vasquez was the operator of this train. Then, they put that train into bypass mode and that operator actually was able to stop off of the train. Now, both sets of brakes appeared to have not been engaged at the time and the train took off without this operator. Injuries. None of its passengers hurt. Secretary pollack called the there is a two layer system so that this kind of thing does hand happen, but there are concerns tonight about the single operator system on the redline train. This switchover happening back in 2011. 2011. Redline trains in the past operate with two operators, but they have been operating safely with only one operator, as have our blue line trains, as have trains throughout the United States of america. If state procedures are followed properly, there is no safety problem with operating trains with a single operator. Now, some passengers told us they believe the train was actually speeding at the time of this incident. And pollack said that whether a train is in bypass mode, it can go faster than 25 it cant go faster than 25 miles per hour. Investigation. Its a system aimed at preventing human error and human trampling, and its called positive train control. Now this is this automatic system, that slows a train down, whenever it begins to build up speed and go out of control. Its certainly a system that people, that we spoke with here, at this station, say, they want implemented. You think the train is being manned by somebody, when in fact, the train goes alone by itself. Passengers at the braintree station were shaken up after learning a train sped away without its conductor on board. Transportation consultant john sussman says unlike airplanes where theres a pilot and copilot, it is common for trains to only have one conductor, because there is other safety mechanisms in place. Theres whats called dead man switches there, he lets go of the controls. The train will automatically as he removes his t, it automatically comes to a stop. The reason why these Safety Measures didnt work is because the conductor wasnt on board to activate them. Which is why sussman supports positive train control, because its a system that ought mat cliff activates. Automatically activates. Positive train controls would have automatically slowed that train down. We showed sussman a photo a passenger took of the cab this morning. While the operator got permission to put the train in bypass mode, experts say it would be against protocol to leave the key. Rarely have i ever seen a conductor leave a cab of a transit train without locking the door behind them. That seemed unusual to me. Ultimately, the mbta had to cut the power to the third rail. The only way to stop the train and what sussman calls a last resort. And meantime tonight, people here, theyre not only frustrated, they say delays are one issue, but when it comes to their safety, they want immediate action.
