Mealsonwheels of tampa serves approximately 750 individuals a hot meal everyday monday through friday. These are folks who for homebound. The visits from mealsonwheels volunteers delivering a hot meal to the door stepis often tierms the only human contact they receive on any given day but the charity has been searching the community 40 years and needs your help more than ever. They are facing a serious shortage of volunteers to deliver the meals. Joining with us more, executive director steve king and Communications Director andrea brogan. Welcome. Thank you for coming in. Thank you for having us. We first reported this in december. We hope folks started to volunteer. How many more routes or volunteers are you looking to fill . Right now we serve hot meals monday through friday. Each weekday we have 70 routes to go across greater tampa. About 14 to 20 of those routes are open everyday that we need filled. So what are some of the what are the areas that youre talking about . So viewers can get an understanding of whether they are close. A lot of routes are in east tampa. Youre looking at seminole heights, to the hillsborough avenue, 22nd street. Then around usf also needs a what does volunteering mean . Are there different time commitments . Work. A lot of volunteers drive once a week. Those routes take about an hour to an hour andahalf depending on how talkative you are, how talkative the recipients are. It will take once a week go b an hour andahalf. You can also do once every other week or you can be a substitute which helps in the days when we have a lot of open routes. We can call on you to help fill in on those days. What are the requirements for being a volunteer . Obviously you have to have a car. You need a car. You need to be 18 or older. Now, if youre under 18 and you need Bright Future hours you earn two hours for every route you do. You can drive with a parent, guardian, older sibling or teacher. So do the volunteers pick up the food at mealsonwheels . And then they go to the deliveries . It depends. We have 15 different dropoff sites to make it easy. To van dyke and dale mabry. Palm river, progress village. We make it easy, three trucks go out daily to get volunteers closer to the pickup sites. So they are not coming all the way to us. Steve, how important are these volunteer drivers to what you do . They make all the difference in the world. I mean, we are completely privately funded. Were funded by this community for this community. We couldnt do what we do without our volunteers. The drivers are all age groups . All age groups. We have them from 18 up to, i think our oldest driver is probably in her early 90s. I wont reveal her age. And, so yeah, just a wonderful group. You asked the requirements. The one sole requirement is a kind heart and drivers license. Thats right. We have the best viewers so im sure they will help.
