Reporter Bartow Police say 32yearold prison inmate david ross locked four other Prison Inmates into a room in the building and overpowered the guard jeffrey rexroad and escaped. That is scary. And you know, they dont have weapons. How did he do this . Reporter they unusual source. The four inmates left behind were able to get out of the room they were locked in and flag down a motorist. Reporter deputies quickly poured into the area. But then, ross had a 35 minute head start driving a stolen city of bartow work truck. Police knew ross was from Pinellas County and they tracked the stolen truck here to saint petersburg. But kidnapped guard somehow police cornered ross and arrested him after a brief foot chase. And now, we have just learned from the Bartow Police department, apparently, this inmate had a small Utility Knife and used that to overpower the guard. Then he used the guards own handcuffs to put his hands behind his back and put him in the stolen truck and speed off. Ross was sentenced in 2014. Relatively minor charges. He had been sentenced to five years behind bars. Stacie . Jeff, was the detention deputy armed . Reporter uh, the detention deputy was not armed. I asked that question of the Bartow Police chief. He said he was not armed. The detectives in this case are now talking to that deputy who is fortunately okay, no injuries, trying to find out exactly how this all went down. I spoke with the chairman today about how this debate will stack up against the other two. How do you think this debate is going to stack up compared to the other two . I dont know. I hope they will more substancive on the issues. Entitlements and the National Court justices and so on, hoping that is where it goes. And that the personalities that are involved dont get involved until maybe later in the debate. But you never know. We have no control over these things. Reporter it is challenging but debates have really come to move the voters. Move the polls at least in a significant way. This is the 30th debate that the commission has done. Starting in 1988 when you count eight Vice President ial. American people expect the candidates to have to debate and answer questions. And when they walk away, what do they see . What do they take away from the debates . Is it more substance or personality in. It is usually both. It has been a little heavy in personality. Tonight i hope we get substance. An inmate takes a correctional officer hostage in a stolen truck. 42yearold david ross was working with a corrections crew in bartow when he threatened jeffrey rexroad with a small knife. Rexroad was not armed at the time he was forced into a utility truck. Ross was tracked down in saint petersburg. They found the officer inside of a gas station after he
