In the last hour we have seen temperatures jumped back up to about 10 degrees so we are back in the 50s across the board but it is starting to warm up a tad. Just over two weeks ago the department lost one of thei cancer. They say he was dedicated to the city and was a firefighter for 30 years. I spoke with one of the firefighters at the station one. He says that firefighter never missed one of these ceremonies and they are looking forward to honoring him. This is video from last years fallen firefighter ceremony. They say in addition to honoring the fallen firefighter they will recognize two new members and one promoted off the beginning of Fire Prevention week which is celebrated across the country. The goal is to educate people about Safety Measures they can take in their homes to prevent fires. According to the Fire Prevention association three out of five home fires resulted from homes without working smoke alarms were not having a smoke alarm at all. At the fire station they are starting to set up for the ceremony and they say there will be a number of people honored and it kicks off at noon. It is open to the public and they encourage you to attend. After the ceremony you can get a tour of the fire station that will run from 12 30 pm until 1 pm. Meg shaw, news five. Thousands of survivors will be there as well to raise awareness and money for research. Among those will be a local woman who took on the disease and won lauren brill has her story. Reporter i remember he came in and said well kiddo, it is cancer. Darlene 20 years ago she had Breast Cancer. My husband would come to all of my appointments with me. And sometimes if he knew i was meeting with a doctor i would come out and he would be sitting in the waiting room. She had her husband to hold her hand the now manager used exercise to clear her head. It helped with the stress levels. They have said that if there is a magic pill it would be routine is still paying off. I am strong. I can go to my grandsons who are for and 2 in eight months and i can play with them. The curves of Willoughby Hills has raised 175,000 per American Cancer Society over 15 years. The owner kathy blatz was diagnosed 15 years ago. Darlene and her boss our five years ago i did lose my sister to Breast Cancer. She had a more aggressive form than i did. When darlene was diagnosed she was scared. Now she is not only strong and healthy but different than she was prior to the diagnosis. It made me appreciate other people. Not easy to go through this alone. About you helps you. It helps you.
