Lets get to our top story this morning. And its a sad one. A choice by Brittany Maynard, that 29yearold who became the face of death with Dignity Movement to end her own life. Tamron has the latest on that. Good morning to you. Brittany maynard made that decision months ago after being diagnosed with incurable brain cancer. She went through with her promise over the weekend, dying peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. She made her final Facebook Post on saturday, writing, goodbye to all my dear friends and family that i love. Today is the day i have chosen to pass away with dignity in the face of my terminal illness. This terrible brain cancer that has taken so much from me but would have taken so much more. The story of the 29yearold diagnosed with terminal brain cancer made headlines when she moved to oregon to take advantage of that states death with dignity act. A video explaining her decision to end her life on november 1st went viral with 10 million views on youtube. I dont have to die the way that it has been described to me the way that my brain tumor would take me. Just last week, a new video, alluding to a possible delay. November 2nd comes along and im still alive, i know that well just still be moving forward as a family like out of love for each other and that decision will come later. Reporter overnight a statement from end of Life Association associated with with maynard read in part, she chose to abbreviate the dying process by taking the aid in dying medication she received months ago. She died as she intended, peacefully, in her bedroom, in the arms of her loved ones. There were heartfelt tweets about maynards passing. Your story, compassion and fight will never leave me. She modeled the bravery of facing death with dignity. She, not cancer, had the last word. In her last online post, she thanked family and close friends, who she called her ring of support before ending with a final message. Goodbye, world. Spread good energy. Pay it forward. Her official obituary released sunday night reading she left this world with zero regrets on time spent, places been or people she loved in her 29 years. Seize the day. Whats important to you . What do you care about . What matters . Pursue that. Forget the rest. Just last month she and her family took a trip to the grand canyon, the last task on her bucket list. Were talking some areas picking up three to five inches of rain. Thats going to be spreading to the north. We also have another major system coming onshore into the pacific northwest. And that area is going to be looking over the next 48 hours anywhere from three to six inches of rain. And that moisture down south, thats going to be making its way here into the northeast. In the meantime, were learning more this morning about what may have led to that tragic crashative Virgin Galactic space plane during a test flight. In a moment well talk to the companys founder, sir Richard Branson. First, jacob rascon has the latest on the investigation. Good morning to you. Reporter matt, good morning to you. The ntsb wants us to be clear, these new facts dont tell us the official cause of the crash. That will take much longer. Video and flight data taken inside and outside the cockpit was a mistake by both man and machine. A break in the investigation into Virgin Galactics failed test flight killed one pilot and injured another, active chairman saying the tails or feathers of the space plane, which are only supposed to deploy as the aircraft reenters the atmosphere deployed before the plane ever got into space. Ntsb saying video from inside the cockpit shows the copilot, michael alsbury, who died in the crash, unlocked the feathers as the rocket ignited. They dont deploy simply because theyre unlocked. Video and flight data confirmed nobody pulled that lever. The feathers deployed on their own. Seconds later, the aircraft came apart. Were a long way from finding cause. We still have months and months of investigation, a lot to do, a lot we dont know. Reporter this is the biggest piece of what is left. What would have carried six space tourists and two pilots into suborbit. More than 700 people have already bought tickets including justin bieber, katy perry and leonardo dicaprio. The community is mourning the loss of alsbury. He was a friend and a colleague to, you know, to all of us. Never gets replaced. Reporter and the surviving pilot, peter siebolt, is recovering after surgery. Is he talking to doctors but not yet well enough to talk to investigators. Good morning. I know its early and the ntsb is saying its going to take a long time to have concrete answers. The preliminary ideas that the copilot on this flight may have started the deployment process of those tails or feathers at the wrong time, have you seen that video . Can you confirm that . I havent seen the video myself. The ntsb, you know, are leading the investigation. And we go by exactly what they tell us. But, you know, if the deployment did take place early, obviously, theyre indicating that may well be the cause. But we need them to examine that further and let us know. I know youre taking a wait and see approach, sir richard. But people are already wondering whether this accident and the death of this copilot is a crippling blow. There have been delays, setbacks in the past with this program and can Virgin Galactic survive the image thats now been seen around the world of that space vehicle coming apart at 45,000 feet . I think that if we can find what the ntsb is pointing to, and if that ends up to be the case, that is something which is easy to fix and we can make absolutely certain that, you know, it cannot be done again in the future. So, i think, you know, we have a wonderful spacecraft, spaceship, wonderful 400 engineers trying to make history and theyre not going to put down tools. Theyre going to move forward and create a Spaceship Company that will be, hopefully, one day the marvel of the world. Yes, its been a horrible setback, obviously, for mike alsburys family and mike himself but we owe it to him to continue. And that, we will do. Even as you say we owe it to him to continue, im thinking back to the early days of the nasa programs going into space. Although they had tragic loss of life as well, that was about the advancement of science. It was about that giant leap for mankind and rightly or wrongly, people dont see your program in the same light. They think it is more of an expensive thrill ride. So, is it worth the risks . Absolutely, its worth the risks. I mean, our program is about many different things. First of all, its about giving the millions of people who would like to go to space the chance to go to space. Secondly, its about putting up massive arrays of satellites to enable the 3 billion people, for instance, who dont have mobile phone, Internet Access or wifi access to get them. Third its about pointtopoint travel in the future in an environmentally friendly way at a fraction of the time it takes today. And i can carry on. So, its a grand its a grand program which has had a horrible setback, but i dont think anybody watching this program would want us to abandon it at this stage. Nik was walking the distance of two city blocks and up eight stories with 65,000 people gathered below, holding their breath. The dare devil taking in the scenery. Whats the view like . Its unbelievable. Absolutely stunning. And while a sometimes shaky wire didnt quite let him do everything he wanted. Unfortunately i planned on doing a selfie right about here but i dont lieke this movement so i dont think im going to. Under seven minutes later, he was on solid ground, kissing family and, yes, taking selfies. Followed by a few quick elevator rides before his second walk of the night. Are we good . This one, blindfolded. Looking good. With no vision to help him, nik relied on a pinging beacon and his fathers coaching. Two steps. Another step. During a breathless 80 seconds where he became king of the windy city sky line. One more step. Putting him back in the world record books yet again. Stay calm and focus on that next step. There is no time for fear to enter your mind. He made it all look so easy. Of course, he said this was perhaps his most difficult challenge yet, to date. I was going to say, difficult to watch. What strikes me in watching these things, nik, you walk across that wire like youre walking to the bus stop or to the starbucks. You are so calm, cool and collected. Was there never really a moment that you felt a little fear, that your heart rate went up a little bit . You know, theres no time for fear. I have to stay focused on what im doing f i let fear enter into my body thats when an accident can happen. I try to remain very positive and very focused and train properly. Its really about training and preparation, knowing i would be successful making this walk. I never would have taken that first step if i wasnt fully confident. That said, you were going to do a selfie at one point but decided not to. Is that because conditions werent sufficient to do that . There were a couple of big gusts of winds that hit me in the face and stood me upright. I was leaning into it. And i thought maybe i shouldnt do this. Threequarters of the way up, jim cantore warned me i was going to face more fierce winds coming off that building. In the excitement or anxiousness, i wanted to get up there because i wanted to see how bad it was going to be. And at the end i thought i did that really quick. I should have stopped. But alls well that ends well. Glad to be on solid ground. The next walk you did, of course, blindfolded. Whats ta like to have that sense taken from you . How important is your vision in doing what you do . How many adjustments did you have to make . Up until recently i thought it was impossible to walk a wire without vision. My parents always told me to focus on the other end, thats the solid rock, and focus on that. Youll make it across to the other side. To take that important element out was extremely challenging and wire walking was definitely Second Nature to me. Seven generations, its in my blood. But definitely challenging mentally. Its very, very draining. There was no time to thenk about it. I knew i had to get over that wire. Basically i told myself im going to torture you mentally for 2 1 2 minutes but i know youre going to make it safely to the other side because youre prepared. You make it look so easy. I know youre planning your next big stunt. Feel free to let us in on what it is. Do you feel in your heart you will know enough is enough or do you feel that pressure to always be topping yourself . No, i really do feel like ill know when enough is enough. My great grandfather did lose his life and it had to do with his physical ability. It wasnt his age but he couldnt hold on. I have been trained to hold on to that wire. Knowing that that wire is there. If theres ever too much or anything ill go down and hold on and wait for my guys. When you think its time, i told my family, let me know and ill give it up. Your encore performance, have you planned it . Im working on recreating my great grandfathers greatest walk in georgia, he did two head stands on the wire. Ive never done a head stand on the wire in public. I want to recreate that walk. And he put it in her crib, which i thought was really cute. The first month or so, i really checked out and it just felt important to totally focus on her and on family. Everybody on the show came by and saw her. I pretty much didnt leave the house. So if you wanted to see me or the baby, you had to come to our apartment. Shes in a milk stupor. Shes a good eater but like her parents she likes a snack. When she was about 3 weeks old, my mom and i were hanging around on the play mat and she kind of rolled over. Look who rolled over. Pretty incredible. I asked my doctor, what level are we talking about . She said thats a fluke. Dont get so excited. Learning to give her a bath was a huge challenge. This is Jennifer Lopez like you have never seen her before. She says she started this book as a diary of her 2011 world tour, but it quickly turned into something much deeper. In it, she reveals her secret struggles with self esteem, her troubling patterns with men and what shes finally learned about love. Have you seen her on the dance floor reporter as an entertainer, Jennifer Lopez seems to bare it all. I want to dance reporter now in her new book true love shes even bearing her soul. The superstar writes about an emotional year on tour in 2011, the same year her eightyear marriage to singer marc anthony unraveled. And she reveals surprising discoveries she made about herself along the way. The title of the book is called true love. Yes. Reporter and you write a lot about it. I think you have Something Like 60 songs. Right. I do. Reporter talking about love, true love. I know. If you had my love im such a romantic. I wish you were my first love reporter but the true love you actually came to write about is very different than the true love you grew up wanting and the true love you had written about. I feel like when were kids, youre sold into this fairy tale idea of what this love is, that prince charm something going to come along to save you and you live happily ever after. Theyre going to rescue me from the bronx and were going to go off and live in a castle somewhere and its going to be awesome and hes going to love me forever and im going to love him forever and its going to be so easy. And its really different than that. After being let down so hard with the divorce, here i am, trying to try so hard and hold it together and make this amazing life when i feel unhappy and hiding those feelings. Reporter you were doing that . Yes. That true love, i realized, was the love that was missing inside of myself. Reporter for yourself . For myself. Reporter causing her, she says, to make choices that were hurtful for her, starting years before. You write in the book about a scene when youre on the phone with your boyfriend and your agent is watching you plead with the boyfriend on the phone for yourself and then you come back into the room and she says, wow, you have self esteem issues. Right. Reporter you never had contemplated that you had low self esteem . No. I thought i was the tough girl from the bronx, had it all together. I was out in hollywood. Nobody i had so much common sense and street smarts and all that kind of stuff. Reporter how does that work . Someone has low self esteem but theyre on television, theyre confident enough in one area. Reporter right. Theyre on stage, looking sexy, looking hot and that doesnt go with low self esteem. I had this confidence in what i could do. I did not have so much confidence in who i was and what i had to offer just as a girl. Reporter can you work to figure out why you thought you were so unworthy in love . Its still a work in progress for me. Its how you feel as a child. Being a middle child and being invisible sometimes and trying to get the attention. What did i do . I overachieved. I ran track and won medals every weekend or i would go on the show and steal the show. That would give me a confidence. But there was a part of me that just wanted love, that just wanted to be, you know that felt like she wasnt worthy of love, which is why she was trying to do all this stuff. Reporter she says thats why when one romance ended she would jump right into another without a break, always mistaking passion for real love. Reporter gives me a little comfort and gives me a little we have a little chemistry, boom, were in. Reporter when you broke up with ben afflec, marc anthony was there and, boom, you were in. Youre right. Probably my first big heartbreak and one of my friends that came into my life and said im here. What you need to know is nobody can save you or heal you. Only you can do that for you. Reporter and now shes doing it. For the first time in her adult life, jenny from the block is living single. Breaking from boyfriend casper smart earlier this year. Youre alone now. Yes. Reporter are you scared about that . Yeah, i do. I get scared. Reporter you get scared . Yeah, i get scared. Its not normal for me. But i also know that i cant make decisions based on the fear so that when a person does show up, im like, this is so nice. Yeah, come on. Lets move in together, you know. Or i go, lets get to know each other. Are you good enough for my kids . And if we bump into some bumpy parts are you going to work on it with me . Im open to t im open to love. And, secondly, my wife died a couple of years ago and, you know, i had also lost my parents when i was young. And i think a brother. And a brother. Within a short period of time. Within a short period of time. I had lost three members of my family by 20 and i had to figure out how to be happy because my natural orientation was to be happy. Then at 60 the same thing. I thought oh, i see a book. You write about nancy. One of the things i loved reading about, she was very funny. Hilarious. Very funny. You tell a story about how when you would two would argue, she would demand to speak to ed grimly. She liked ed grimly better than me. At times ed always sided with her. So she would say, i dont want to talk to you. Youre being obnoxious. I want to talk to ed. Oh, miss nancy, how boring is he . Hes so obsessed with himself and, my, thats a pretty top youre wearing. Okay, go away, ed. Done. I win the argument. Yeah. You talk about some of the people you know in hollywood and not in a name droppy way, kind of a matter of fact way but you talk about having a chance to meet some of your idols. You went to broadway and sat next to katherine hepburn. I did. It didnt go so well . No. It was a play royal family. Theres an empty seat beside me and suddenly i hear, excuse me, get out of my way. Move that umbrella, you id not. Its katherine hepburn. Im thinking im not going to say anything. Im going to be very cool. Act one ends and Rosemary Harris does a dramatic diatribe and i turn to hebburn saying isnt she classy . And she, because im talking to her like a real person says she certainly is. You know, rosemary has this ability to be real very much like the best people you can ever imagine in your life as shes saying that im thinking im talking to katherine hepburn. First walk from merina city tower west walking up hill across the Chicago River at a 19degree incline. You can really see that incline. You were waiting on the other side and you had the coolest view because you could see how steep it was. Almost 100foot difference. It is steep. Its eight stories. You see right there as hes walking up, that took effort. Then he goes from being cool as a cucumber, he was chatting casually with all of us. He looked like he was ready to celebrate. Then, of course, he had the second part, which was a little more difficult because it involved taking away his sight, wearing a blindfold. He was always worried that was the most difficult as hard as that looked, this time, completely covered his eyes and walked between the two merina towers, his father on the other side with a mega phone keeping the pace and a pinging sound so he would know directionally where to go. He asked everybody on those balconies around to be quiet so he could hear his dad, hear the ping. He made it across. He set two World Records and it was just, again, an incredible night. Hes so amazing. Out on the wires, i wanted to take a selfie, but hes like, given the weather, the wind gusts, occasional wind gusts right now i think im probably not going to do that. Good plan. The minute he got off i said lets take that selfie then. A little out of focus because i was doing it with a glove on. And it was windy. Too cold. And it was windy. Windy and cold, absolutely. The blindfold during your show, it was important to explain it was a real blindfold. He didnt want anyone to believe this was a gimmick behind it. I think jeff gordon generally doesnt like the way keselowski drives and this has been building. Kind of a rookie pushing the veteran . Yeah. Everybody. Pit crew, too. So there was also plastic ring inside the bag, i guess, of the candy and so at this point shes saying, the ring is obviously sentimental because its a wedding ring. Theres no wedding ring thats not unless youre not with that person anymore. Shes looking for her ring and its so sad. But its mixed in with plastic rings so you hope kids and moms could tell the difference. The plastic rings are candy. Is it a ring pop . No, they have plastic rings, too. Spider rings. Deborah has when she had these gloves on that had these fake rings on and it fell into the candy jar that we were using. But it was a fake you know, just a little piece of plastic jewelry but in this case this is the real deal. Good way to get a new ring. Some of my friends i used to talk to didnt talk to me. Why do you think they didnt talk to you . Because they didnt understand what was going on. She was just real quiet. I said, is everything okay . Shes like, yeah. I didnt know if it was her treatment making her tired and wiped out or someone was picking on her. Okay, guys. Just like yesterday. After being tipped off that cassidy was feeling left out, her english teacher called an assembly to introduce the kids to cassidy, the star. Not cassidy, the kid with cancer. The kids began to understand but it didnt end there. Grab your sign. They were inspired to make a second video, a seventh grade version of what it means to be truly brave, starring cassidy. We want to make the point that she really isnt different from all the other kids. In this version, cassidy walks the hallways and sits alone in black and white. Her classmates grouped in bright colors ignore her. Were going to have a few brave students hold up some signs that say brave, but realize they can break out of their clique walk to the camera. The students spend hours creating their masterpiece. Line up your cards. Several days later, the big premiere. It is cassidys first time watching the video. The truly brave video. See your true colors shining through how do you think it changed cassidy . She knows there are people supporting her. She would shy away because of the hair loss and being different. I think what were aware of is kids are starting as we noted puberty so much earlier that those conversations are happening much earlier and theyre bo theyre bombarded with messages so early. How early do you think we should have the talk . Youre going to start when theyre toddlers. It is not one big talk. It is a series of conversations over the years. When theyre toddlers, you use the correct names for the body parts and talk about it very conversationally. I tried. They didnt like them. Cassidy insisted on wang and gina. Which is okay, because she knows the right words. She may call her elbow something else, but as long as she knows and the kids know what the real language is. Why is it so important to have the real language . It teaches them how to be more comfortable in their bodies and we know Research Shows they may not have sex as early as other kids that dont note different language, it builds selfconfidence and really does build a sense of self, this is what my body is, i know whats mine, i know what you can and cannot touch, and thats okay. According to this new age of puberty for boys, i always told when my kids were little you should have the talk before their 9th birthday. Now it sounds like you got to have it sooner. Yeah, in preschool, even, youre going to be talking in very simple terms, if they ask you questions, answer them honestly. Certainly by elementary you want to be talking about anatomy, talking about what intercourse is, how male and female bodies fit together like puzzlepuberty should you wait until they ask you . Some kids mature faster than other kids. You dont want them finding out playground talk, right . You want to give them appropriate and true and factual information. But dont overtalk. So if they say, hey, will you tell me about, blah, blah, blah, and you say, sure, what do you want to know . They might say, nothing, i just thats okay. Ill talk to you about it another time. So sometimes we as adults, we need to give more information than our kids are ready for. Kids dont get to have childhood anymore. I know. Youre racing through everything. Unbelievable to me. I think too parents worry about having this conversation, they think, if i talk to my kids about contraception, and about sex, it means i condone it. Thats not the case at all. Youre still going to talk about your family values and beliefs, that comes into it. But the studies show that kids who have open communication with their parents about sex are actually less likely to have sex as adolescents. More likely to use contraception if they do. By junior high, they should know everything. Yes. By junior high they need to know. The fact is, certainly what i see in my practices, kids in junior high are starting to experiment. We want them to be fully educated. It is awful to think about, but we want them to be educated and if we start this conversation early so theyre open and comfortable with us, as parents, theyll come back and talk to you and say, oh, this is happening, this person is doing that, i dont want to do that. And what if you get pressured, what if your friends are hooking up and you dont want to hook up, what does that mean . If you dont know how to have the conversation when theyre little, you suggest a book as a guide, something, so youre not hanging out there. There are so many good ones out there. So many reputable resources online too. They already know the words to use, so use that, makes it more comfortable as parents and easier for them to understand. Okay, ladies.
