It beat him once. But with the help of jennas training, can he get over it this time . The pressure is on today. And welcome to today on this sunday morning. Im erica hill. Im lester holt with jenna wolfe and dylan dreyer. Welcome back. Thank you very much. Had a nice random day off and now im back and raring to go. Well, everyones raring to go this morning. I saw that video of lester. I had to come back. Somebody had to come back. But, yeah. There it is, the wall. A technique issue. Is it taller than last time . From that angle, that looks nearly impossible. I thought it was a technique issue. Jenna said, no, your form was wrong. Little bit. And you needed some training. I went to camp jenna. Listen, lester worked this guy is really strong. He works really, really hard and he put his mind to it. The video kills me every time i see it. But now well do it in slow motion. Look, were going to later on this morning, ill go out there and try it again. If i dont succeed this time you will, you will. I was going to say, if i dont succeed this time, theyre going to put little well shoot it from a different camera angle so we cant tell were pushing you up. Lets do that. Anyway, a lot to talk about this morning. Also ahead, a really great story about how bruno mars music helped a young girl after a terrible car accident. Doctors feared she wouldnt recover. But she had an incredible turn around and well tell you how the popular singer helped her get better. Such a great story. We begin with this mornings top story, thats the great white shark attack off a popular california beach. A terrifying scene there on saturday. This morning, that swimmer who was attacked is telling his story of survival. Kristen dahlgren has more for us. Kristen, good morning. Good morning. This story might make anyone head to the beach today think twice about going into the ocean. Shark attacks along the california coast are quite rare. This one happened on saturday morning, and the victim is now speaking out about the moment he was caught in the sharks jaws. You can feel the whole body shaking with the shark. The video captures the moment it happened. A swimmer with no idea a 7 foot great white is nearby. Look at that. There he is. Look at him. Right the shark tacks, thrashing, fighting to escape a fishermans line. He got bit. The guy is, like, never mind, get the lifeguard. Shark attack. Shark attack. The victim who suffered a bite to his torso and hand is now out of the hospital. And telling his story. It surfaced up to the very top, and i saw it eye to eye. And it made a very sharp left turn and just lunged right at my chest. Some witnesses say the bloody scene could have been avoided. A fisherman hooked the shark, okay. And he was fighting it for about 40, 45 minutes. Theyre trying to get away, and the fishermans trying to pull him in. Fishing for great whites is prohibited. And fishermen are required to cut the shark loose as soon as it is identified. Whether he was trying to unhook him and snap the line or not, im not sure. One of the fishermen told knbc they were not fishing for great whites and noted they alerted swimmers to get out of the water. Hey, get out of the water shark get out of the water shark. Officials kept people out of the water until they were able to spot the shark in deeper water. The shark is injured. When an animal is injured you dont know how theyre going to behave. Were not taking any chances. As for the 40yearold who is recovering this morning i dont know what to think right now. I really dont. Im just still in shock. I nearly died today. Now, police have banned fishing off the pier for at least the next several days. As for just how common a shark attack is off the coast of california, there have been 39 shark attacks there in the past dozen years. Only five of them fatal, erica. But still very scary stuff. That will make you think twice. Can you imagine someone yelling shark, get out of the water, and youre in the water . No, i cant. Lets talk about the flooding fears in the midwest, rivers throughout the area starting to crest. And the rain just keeps on coming. Dylan is tracking this one for us. Good morning. Good morning. Thats the problem. The rain is relentless. And we did have some flooding in clarksville, missouri. Look at some of these streets and roadways, everybody getting together and sandbagging, just sort of trying to help where the floodwaters are going with the mississippi flooding and several reservoirs flooding. And in illinois, theyre handling the same situation, you know. You can see how high the water levels are along the banks of those rivers. Here is what is setting up as we go through the next couple of days. It is not going to be a deluge of downpours, but it is going to be relentless rain. Every single day we have the threat of some showers. You can see in minneapolis, were seeing more of these showers passing through. We have lots of severe storms we had overnight and down through missouri, where more flooding rains are expected. We have got this cold front that is draped across parts of the midwest. And since june 1st, cedar rapids, iowa, 13. 9 inches of rain, thats well above average for this time of year and in davenport, iowa, we picked up nearly 9 inches of rain. Any additional rainfall is going to add to those flooding concerns. Watch as we go through the next couple of days. Through the day today, another half an inch or so. Monday, another half an inch. By the time we get to tuesday, looking at about an additional two inches of rain. Thats the concern for everyone who is already dealing with that flooding. Erica in. Dylan, thanks. Going to the on going boarder crisis. Many migrants are women and children looking to start a new life. And to stop the violence theyre leaving behind back home. Miguel almaguer has more. Reporter the flow of immigrants shows no sign of slowing. With texas facilities filled to the max, another Border Patrol flight lands in san diego. Mothers and children bused off for processing. In tucson, this 23yearold, one journey behind her, plans another to find her sister. She left two children behind in guatemala, in hopes of getting the medical care for her youngest son henry. This blanket and the clothes they wear are all they have. The smugglers made sure of that. We brought more clothes, she says, but when we crossed, they said everything had to stay. And that was it. Many immigrants choose the treacherous journey to escape unrest in their native countries. And nbcs Stephanie Gosk is covering the story this weekend in honduras. Im here talking to steven and kimberly, both teenagers, younger than 18, they dont want to show their faces because they live in one of the most violent neighborhoods in honduras. Every single one of their friends talks about leaving this place and going to the united states. And the principle reason they want to leave is because of violence. Reporter but some find strife in the u. S. As well. Here in marietta, a quiet holiday weekend, after buses of immigrants were turned away by protesters last week. Meantime, back in arizona, it is one more bus ride for norida and Henry Martinez to georgia to find family and maybe a new home. For today, miguel almaguer, nbc news, marietta, california. David gregory is moderator of meet the press and he joins us with more on this. David, good morning. Good morning, erica. We know immigration is a hot issue in washington. Your guest this morning is Homeland Security jay johnson who visited around mothers day some of the border facilities and came back and said he was determined to do something. Here we are in july. Why is it so difficult to see any movement or get anything done when it comes to Immigration Reform . Well, Immigration Reform is really a separate issue, which is about dealing with the millions of Illegal Immigrants now in the country and what do you do with them Going Forward . This is a flow, a migration flow, that has exploded. Twice as many this year than last, maybe up to 90,000 before the end of the year of especially children coming across the border who have to be detained, put through proceedings to ultimately deport them. And many of them may ultimately stay. That is its own separate debate. What the president wants what secretary johnson wants is the ability to turn these children away at the border. There is a distinction, if you come from mexico, you can be turned away right away. If you come from another country, guatemala like many in miguels piece, you are have to through a proceeding before being deported. The struggle is the humanitarian civil rights issue and the more legal and political aspect of it. Is that one of the main issues when it comes to the issues along the border . Do we look at it from a legal standpoint or do we look at it from the story of some of the families like miguel shared . I think both. I think the government looks at it as both. If you look at some of the reporting by the government, it may be be that 80 of these children end up staying in america. So thats a humanitarian approach. But there is another side of it too for families who live in california, may live in texas, who look at the resources spent to apprehend these young people, to process them, maybe to house them, school them, educate them, all of these things are a real drain on resources, some communities creates a lot of resentment. Well check in with you again in a little bit and see what else you have coming up on meet the press. Lester . Ericerica, thanks. A new development in a scandal. The arizona newspaper that broke the news about the poor treatment of our nations veterans is offering some strong and controversial advice about how to fix the va. Kristen welker following that story for us this morning. Kristen, good morning. Reporter lester, good morning. In the Arizona Republic, it calls for the va to get back to its roots and focus on its quote historic mission, treating veterans who have Service Related injuries. One Veterans Group sharply disagrees saying the paper doesnt understand the needs of vets. In arizona, the epicenter of the va scandal, a rare front page editorial, published by the Arizona Republics editorial board. It calls on bob mcdonald to downsize the agency, writing, by returning to the vas roots and treating only war and Service Related injuries you will enhance care for all veterans. The board argues veterans with nonService Related issues should seek private sector care. In an interview with nbc affiliate kpnx, the opinions page editor says noncombat issues often apply to older vets, who are usually prioritized last. Get them off the bottom of the list, and put them some place where they can get proper treatment on a timely basis. Most of the stuff in this article is quite frankly ridiculous. Reporter tom tarantino, says older vets could still be suffering from warrelated injuries and worries theyll fall through the cracks if pushed into the private sector. The answer to fixing Va Health Care isnt screwing over more veterans. The answer is actually to fix the health care system. Reporter the paper also recommends the va enhances what it does best, like treating post Traumatic Stress disorder, concussions and those who have lost limbs. It also calls for a zero tolerance policy for lying and says the new va chief should act quickly. I think he only has about a year or less to really start turning this around or else veterans are going to completely lose faith in the system that is supposed to care for them. Reporter obviously some strong views and language expressed in a very heated debate. White house and va officials declined to comment on that editorial. Congress is considering legislation that would allow some Service Members to seek private care, but the bill does differ in a lot of ways from what the Arizona Republic is recommending. Lester . And that is because they were forced to pay about a 900 bail fee as well as the restrictions that have been imposed on this young teenager. Hes not allowed to return to the family home. Perhaps the most disturbing of all is that he was released without any charges. Theyre very angry as to why his case required that kind of severe punishment. At the same time, though, his case has drawn International Condemnation from the u. S. State department after the video went viral. Military academy, west point as we know it, is just across the hudson river from the Culinary Institute of america, north of new york city. The two prestigious schools have never really mixed. That is until professors from both universities had a chance meeting and realized their students have a lot more in common than anyone imagined. From basic kitchen skills im trying to be patient so i can be efficient, but honestly im just making a mess. Reporter to basic training. The lessons are designed to break down barriers and stereotypes. First thing you learn is you have to be able to share. Reporter for these students who on the surface dont appear to have much in common, ya wants to study medicine. Im clearly not understanding at all. How do i hold this . Reporter his partner in the exchange is chef in training jake cohen. There you go. Perfect. It is very relatable when you see someone else who has the equal amount of pressure and responsibility. Reporter the idea to bring the two schools together came from married west point professors terry and major Brian Babcock loomis after a chance meeting. This allowed them to hold up a mirror and have a better understanding of themselves when they compare themselves to something they think would be so different. And then move. They get to see theyre not alone in the world. There are other programs that are just as difficult, just as hard. Not on my line. I didnt expect that the student chefs would actually request to be yelled at. Get on it. Reporter both sides had as realistic an experience as possible. There are some people who have never picked up a knife before and they look completely lost. Reporter does that scare you . It is what we do. Im shocked how similar it is to west point. It is a very hard and rigorous industry. Reporter each school boasts a strong sense of community and teamwork. There is a saying called cooperate and graduate. And definitely if we didnt work together, we wouldnt make it through. Reporter despite their shared values and drive, there is one glaring difference. Meal time. At west point, more than 4,000 cadets and staff eat in just 20 minutes. Do they enjoy what they eat . No. They said if we dont like something, we just put sauce on it. Reporter a far cry from the Culinary Institute where meals are meant to be savored, but an important reminder of the differences both sides have come to appreciate. So there are plans for another exchange next year. And what a lot of the students who participated said they would like to see is an overnight, so they could really get a sense for what it is like to have to get up, have the perfectly shined shoes, 15 minutes to get ready at west point and then at the Culinary Institute, some of the baking classes start at midnight. So they do have crazy schedules and they want it even more of a day in the life. This speaks to the future of mess halls, military mess halls, maybe the food will get better. You got to cross your fingers. And interestingly enough, the head chef at west point is a Culinary Institute graduate. And the Culinary Institute has a number of programs where they bring in veterans. Theyre fairly aligned. Great story. Over to dylan now, with the fan of the day. Good morning, lester and erica. We have yor chin. You were here for the fireworks. Take it away. Lester versus the wall. Hes been training hard for this, so will the second time be the charm . Well find out right after these you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall. Oh, yes, we do. Jack nicholson from a few good men. We need lester on the wall. His first attempt a few months s ago was not that successful. But hes ready to try it again. Im ready. First, i knew before i attempted this again, i needed a little extra help or the best i could get. Oh. So jenna and i hit the gym to improve my strength and form. Take a look. I think it was humbling because i do work out a lot. I work on my arms and when i couldnt do it, it was a little embarrassing. It was a lot embarrassing. And the good thing is that jenna didnt rub it in my face at all. Lester, in order for us to really dissect and break down what went wrong with your Obstacle Course endeavor, i brought out this telestrator. I set the whole thing up in the gym. Lets break this down in slow motion and show you how you can do better next time. The first step was okay. Your leg was up here. I want your legs out in front of you. Look at mine. My legs are out in front of me. I keep going and keep them there and im leaning back. What youre doing is not leaning back. You see, your arms are all extended, where is your butt . Where is your butt, lester . It is all the way out here. I dont have one, but, yeah, i got your point. Look how much more work you have to do. You are very, very strong as it is. Couple of things we can work on, anything where you have to pull yourself up, pullups, rows, anything along those lines will help you with your upper body to be able to hoist you when you need to get over the wall. The ultimate pulling exercise is the pullup. Good. Body nice and straight. Jump. Turn. Good. Come on. Come on. Whoo as soon as the camera is off, i can collapse. Dont collapse yet. Still rolling, still roll, still rolling, still rolling. And collapse. Oh, geez. So, here we go. Heres the wall. Moment of truth. And dont pause in the middle. Just make it one fluid motion and get to the top. All right. Here we go. Go, go, go, go. Yes. Nice. Yes thats it. Perfect. He did it all my training. Im very proud of you. You put the work in. Obviously it paid off. Im ready to watch you do it live on tv. All right, here we go, live. Why do it live . That was fun. Great job. Come on, lester. Weve been waiting. So we thought you went through with us sort of what was lacking in the technique. What did you feel . Was it everything that jenna pointed out . My angle was wrong. And this is slick. The shoes, the temperature, the humidity level at the time. Im sure he could come up with more if going to creative. May i show you how its done . Show us. I got this. I got this. Yeah very nice. Very nice. Fantastic. All right. Very proud of you. Great. You were an amazing trainer. Oh, thank you. You were. Shes got this all kind of yeah. Your workout with jenna is one of the most amazing and motivating youll ever do. And i love it because youre going to give us some exercises. A couple of tips. You want to really work on your upper body and the ultimate upper body workout is the pullup, pulling your body weight, you need your bar and your body. It is so simple. It doesnt matter what grip you use, youre going to try ill show you what you want is a regular nice easy pullup. If youre alone and cant do it by yourself, dylan, come on up. What im going to have you do with a partner is bend your knees, if you need a little extra help, someone hold the shins right here, come all the way down and now nice, dylan. Good job, dylan. Perfect. All right. Beautiful, also want your lower body to be engaged as well. This is a fun little workout that will get your upper body with your shoulders and lower body, hold on to a bench, if you cant do a bench, do the ground. Kick your legs up and over. Up and over. Just like this. If you cant go that high, thats fine. If you can, come on over, try it. All right. Here . Yes, the first couple there you go. Perfect. Good. Upper body, your back, your body, your forearms. You get the legs. Maybe one time after the break you two. Want to do it . Well be right back after these messages. Theyre doing it.
