This morning, advocates are calling for the passing of a bill that would add automated speed cameras on northeast philadelphia. The Pilot Program would ticket drivers who were speeding on the boulevard. Its one of the most dangerous and deadly roads in philadelphia. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf is hitting the road to talk about the states efforts to fight opioid addiction. Theyre talking about 20 million for new funding for the effort. It will enable the department of Human Services to create 20 programs that will treat about 4500 people and also connect them with therapy and job assistance. We need to get our arms around the crisis we have right now and the 20. 4 million is just a start. Its a good start. The Governors Office says heroin and opioid overdose are the leading cause of accidental death in pennsylvania. A lot of people are talking about this today. The tax on cigarettes is going up. The tax on each pack goes up by 1. That makes each pack 2. 60. If you buy your cigarettes in philadelphia, add two more dollars. Taxes on cigarettes went up to 2 a pack. That makes it 4. 60. This weekend nbc 10 is trying to clear the shelters with a nationwide pet adoption initiative. Were not only trying to find forever homes for animals but educate pet owners. We check out pet insurance. When you get sick, you go to the doctor, you dont think about it. When your pet gets sick, you take him to the vet. If youve ever had a pet, you know the visits can be costly. Thats why more and more people are getting pet insurance. The insurance can cover ear infections to hip replacements, even stem cell therapy. One woman has had insurance on all of her four dogs and says its worth it.
