This morning were following breaking news out of south philadelphia where an 11yearold boy accidentally shot himself in the face while playing with a gun. It happened in a home along south hicks street. Right now the boy is in critical condition. He is expected to survive. Distrakcted walking sends a teen to a hospital. Witnesses saw the young girl face timing on her phone as she walked right into traffic. Its an important reminder as kids across our area get ready to go back to school. These devices can cause a dangerous distraction. Were joined live now from the high school where the teen was headed. Whats the latest, katy . Reporter the teenager was headed here for cheer leading practice. Police at the scene yesterday told us her injuries were very serious to the point that she was transferred from a nearby hospital downtown to Childrens Hospital of philadelphia. Investigators say that she was walking to cheer practice here at the school, but she was distracted because she was face timing on her phone. Take a look at video we have from the scene. You can see the car that police say hit her and from the dent on the front you can see just how bad this crash was. It sent the girls backpack and other belongings flying on to the road. Police say the 14yearold who lives in abington. Shes an incoming freshman, she was walking to cheer practice before the start of school. The school year hasnt begun yet. She was crossing high land avenue while face timing on her cell phone and they say she walked right into the path of a car. Shes hysterical, shes fun, shes goofy at practice. Shes always hyping everybody up. Our first game is this friday so she was really excited to be stunting there so im just really hoping that shes okay. The man who owns the van discovered the racist graffiti when he woke up wednesday morning. It has since been covered. A swastika was spray painted on the hood of the van. The vandals wrote other words. Some of them we cant show or say on tv. His heart sank when he saw it. We talked to the uncle of the man who owns it. He says this was troubling, concerning and hurtful for the entire family. It even disturbed my mom. You know, my mom, 77 years old. Reporter and the family believes this is all over a parking space. The White Nationalist who says that he pepper sprayed a demonstrator in selfdefense during clashes in charlottesville, virginia, has turned himself in. The university of Virginia Police say he is in custody in lynchburg. Now to a new controversy over that statue of robert e. Lee in charlottesville, video shows a man trying to cut the tarp off the pave ht from the bottom there. He called the tarp a desecration and Police Stopped him from taking the tarp down. Workers placed the tarp over the statue yesterday morning. This follows the violent protests surrounding the violence in charlottesville earlier this month. It placed the tarp over the statue as a memorial to heather heyer. She was killed after a car drove into the demonstration. A columbus statue will be considered for removal. A commission will conduct a 90day review of socalled symbols of hate. Columbus has come under fire for his poor treatment of people in the caribbean.
